I'm thinking about going back to uni and doing a short postgraduate course in philosophy (my bachelors is in software engineering, so this would be something quite new for me). It's only one full semester's worth of subjects so I think it will really only be an introduction, and I'm wondering if anyone here has formally studied philosophy and if so what you're impressions are :).

Am I going to get anything out of a full semesters worth of introductory study? I'm not really looking for any practical benefits or resume enhancement, just personal interest and enjoyment.

Thanks!

What sort of course: historical survey course ie Socrates, Aristotle to the modern guys, or theme-based?

I did a 100-level one in 1st year, and while some might argue how practical it is, you deal with those ideas everyday ... truth, honour, character traits we value/despise, our purpose in life, etc. The "Matrix" movies alluded to all of these universal ideas, but packaged it for mass consumption.

I thought the course rocked, because all those philosophies make you appreciate how some ideas and values change with time, while others haven't really changed since ancient Greece.

Seize the day and take the course :D
