I'm going up to BC this fall to visit my friend, and I need tips. I've never been to Canada. What's the weather like in the fall? When is the Canadian Thanksgiving? I've heard it's in October. Is that true? What is there to do in BC? Where are the Smallville studios? Thanks. :)

G'day Cotton Candy Girl...
Canadian Thanksgiving this year is Monday October 9th and while I'm sure the Vancouverites here (I'm from Winnipeg...middle of the country) will probably correct me on this, I'm pretty sure that October is getting into BC's rainy season. If you're from a warmer climate (ie: the southern US) I'd bring an umbrella and light sweater along with you at the very least.
As for sights and local wildlife...I don't have a clue.

If you're into Smallville filming sites, the Talon is an actual working theatre called "Clova," located in Cloverdale, a short drive outside of Vancouver. Vantec (think that's spelt right) is Smallville High ... I've yet to find the location for the Kent Farm ... I think it's out in Chilliwack somewhere, but not 100% certain ...
Vancouver's a big city ... there's lots to do in the summer. Not so much in the fall/spring/winter, because of the rain. .. most activities are outdoors. I'd suggest
--> A trip up Grouse Mountain (if it's a nice day)
--> Granville Island
--> Biking the Seawall at Stanley Park
--> Robson Street (for shopping)
--> Gastown.
--> Whistler is a few hours drive away, but I would highly reccommend NOT driving it yourself ... take the train or bus. The Sea-to-Sky Highway is horrible to drive; one of the worst in BC, and with one of the highest death rates.
--> Take the ferry over to Victoria (catch it at the Tswassen terminal, going to Swartz bay). See the Empress, the Legislative buildings, and wander around down-town.
For the lower mainland (Vancouver included), expect rain (and LOTS of it!) if you're coming in the last few weeks of October ... some sun if you're coming in the first few weeks (though bring a rainjacket!). Dress warmly; we may only get a daily low of 10*C, but the cold gets right into you, and it's impossible to get warm after that.

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts about the upcoming NHL season is....front runner? What's your fave team? Predictions? Breakout Player? etc...
All I know is the Oilers have no chance of repeating last season's run to the Finals. I think they'll be lucky to make the playoffs. Anaheim may be a team that will go far this season. But I don't like hockey, bring on basketball!

hello fellow Canadians....I'm upset, instead of going to B.C this summer, I got stranded in werid- weather borden ontario. 6 weeks in and still 7 weeks left. so I think I can last just a little bit more. and whats worse next year, I won't be going to B.C but instead Halifax, meaning I have to wait 3 more years before I get to go to B.C. but more better news I may be heading out for a 6 month visit to alert in the next year or so :)

I don't know Mysticlies. I was raised in Winnipeg and lived here most of my life and I don't think I've ever seen a summer this warm in this part of the country :\
I spent about 5 years in Australia (1999-2004) where dry, arid desert-like conditions, bushfire alerts and 40+ degree heat was common place and I gotta tell you...this year feels more like Oz than the Great White North...but with a great deal more humidity.
I loathe humidity *peels shirt off and rings it out*

Pfffttt... .what are you talking about? It's not that bad here.
Sure it rains here sometimes. Maybe a bit more than in southern states. But it doesn't always rain. In fact, out of all of Canada, vancouver has one of the most mild temperatures. Never too hot, never too too cold. Take Calgary for example, in the summer it's dry and hot as hell for a really long time. Yet in the winter, it's -30 or -40.
Personally i prefer spring and fall here. Summer is a bit too hot (35 - 40*C).

Hi everyone!
I'M BACK! Sorry that it was so long, I did not take the time to visit this part of KryptonSite since I left for HMCS QUÉBEC. My summer is going well, other than the horrible goofs that I am now famous for around here (that and being the biggest Superman fan around here).
I had the wonderful chance to see Superman Returns twice (in English and in French). Both versions are great, but in English it was better.
I have to go! I will be back.

Welcome to the message board, Hains. Nice to meet you, too.
I'm an Island gal, and visit Vancouver/Lower Mainland throughout the entire year to visit family and friends; I also have a summer house on the mainland, a short drive from downtown Vancouver, which I visit on a regular basis ... In my experience, the general atmosphere of a Pacific north-west winter is wet, cold, and grey; even when precipitation isn't falling from the sky, nothing seems to be dry between October and April. Sure, it doesn't rain all the time, but it certainly feels like it to most people ... Statistics show that, in Vancouver, over half the days in October will experience some rainfall. This number would be higher if not for Vancouver Island and its mountain ranges, which manage to “catch” most of the rain before it meets the mainland.
We certainly get plenty of rain on the Island during the fall/winter/spring months, despite that the region that I'm in is the mildest area of Canada … A mild climate doesn't mean that we aren't able to have some form of precipitation during the day ... It just shows that our mean temperature is higher that then rest of the country; the cooler summers and warmer winters – a Mediterranean climate.
No offense, Hains. I've lived here all my life; born and raised. I certainly do know what I'm talking about. And I'm not certain about where you're getting the 35*C - 40*C from ... We get that only for a few days on the coast (in my life, the temperature has only gone above 40*C once), not months at a time, like Eastern Canada, or parts of the Interior. Going back to statistics, the average temperature for Vancouver during the summer is ...
June: 15*C
July: 17*C
August: 17*C
And, on a happier note … Hiya, everyone!!! Eek! I’m so glad it’s summer and school is over!!! Just got back from visiting friends on one of the Gulf Islands … It’s been wonderful the last few days! Hope that everyone is having a great time!

I'll agree with you on that! You just feel ... so exposed. It's weird.
I was in Saskatchewan for holidays last summer and it was really really hot. There were actaully tornado warnings out. I think their weather is similar to the weather we get here in Alberta.

What do you guys think of the new restrictions limiting travel between the US and Canada without a passport? I think it sucks and will hurt the economy on border cities.

I agree, I believe the whole passport thing is just way over the top, and will eventually hurt tourism, obviously it will rebound later, but its just stupid. :)
I definitely think it'll hurt both sides a bit, but given what's happened in the last few years, this move isn't surprising. I still don't like it though.

Anyone have any thoughts on the shooting that took place at Dawson College in Montreal?
Mysticlies
09-15-2006, 05:03 PM
yea it was horrible. Most horrible is that this was a higher education facility. I understand that in higschool's and elementary schools there are constant verbal and physical bullying, but in colleges and universty such a thing is rare, and not only rare not looked at to pleasently by the student body. for someone outside that school(so I think), to enter and kill random students is not only horrible, but very distraught. Schools in my mind are supposed to be one of the safest places on earth, before religious buildings and family homes. I'm just heartbroken with this whole sitution.

ugh, sometimes i just get so angry thinking about that kind of stuff.
Kryptonian-Ronin
09-21-2006, 12:08 PM
Don't.
Really, anger is a good emotion if it makes us wanna do something about it, but more often than not, we just use it to blame people.
Fact is, when someone goes on a killing spree, there is enough blame to go around, including society.
chlex_44
09-21-2006, 12:12 PM
yeah i see what you mean. As hard as it may be, society as a whole needs to change.
Kryptonian-Ronin
09-21-2006, 12:15 PM
Violence has always been a part of society, its when society tries to deny that nature, that humans are capabale of such deeds, that we feed this "evil" if you will and we pay the consquences for our lack of vision and our rejection of what we are.
Mysticlies
09-21-2006, 01:37 PM
I believer that violence is usually nutured, but at the same time can be equally caused naturally. Just the way people are, any wide range of emotions can cause a nervous breakdown; or no nervous breakdown at all, just for the sake of the thrill.
I also belive that socitey like always is usually the reason people tend to go on a killing spree, and younger age kids usually are effected by verable/physical bullying.
Kryptonian-Ronin
09-22-2006, 06:20 AM
Socieity likes to put the blame on gun, wither accessiable or not, video games, movies, etc.
Never do they (people in society) accept the blame.
Fact is, we are all responsible for each other, we are all "our brothers keeper".
If we don't accept this responsibility, things like this won't go away.
As societies became bigger and with more people of all different backgrounds, people got away from that "care for the neighbour" attitude, just when it was needed the most.
Sure we can blame the legal system, sure we can blame politicians and special intereste groups, just one problem, Society (people) control those things.
The buck stops here.

Hey, do you guys think the Pittsburgh Penguins should move to Canada? I think the hockey market here is 10 times better than the US (for ex., Marian Hossa of the Atlanta Thrashers recently ate at a restaurant where the waiter didn't know what the Thrashers were, let alone hockey). Winnipeg deserves to have a team again, or Quebec City. I would really love for another franchise to return to the birthplace of the greatest sport in the world ;)

I don't see it happening, as much as I would like for it to.
$$$ is the key, TV revenues and all that.
The Jets left Winnipeg for a reason, samething with the Nordiques.
We may not like it but the fact is money talks and BS walks.
To be truthful I have NO idea how some of those US teams survive with that kind of lack of recognition.

Heres something, for those of you who are in Ontario do you guys have any snow where you are? I've lived in Ottawa my whole life and this year there is only about an inch of snow, and it only snowed mabey 2 days ago for the first time. Strange change in climate since it used to snow back in October a decade or so ago.

Yeah, I'm near Toronto and we haven't had any snow at all, and the temperature has been around +6 every day, but finally -3 today. Good thing I'm not an avid skier or I'd be quite upset about that. I am upset, though, because this is the first of many green winters that we will begin to experience. And really, I don't care if there's snow or not on Christmas, what I do care about is the implications this warmth has on species such as the polar bear, which depend on colder climates to sustain their prey.

Loving the warm weather, I don't mind the lack of snow or cold though, repercussions-wise, I am not to happy.
Every so often we get winters like this, just like we get summers that suck arse.
While we get nice weather here, its 50 below in Alberta and 20 ft of snow in Colorado.

hey does any one know for sure when the whole passport thing to cross the border will come into effect? I still think there really isn't a big a difference between a passport and a citizenship card, but hey things happen. Any thoughts on this passport thing?
Anyway I know that just one year of increased local warmth shouldn't put me on the edge...but I fear that global warming into slowing creeping into our lives. I think that the number one thing we can do is not reduce global warming but increase our technological advances in helping fight the changes of global warming. or at least the negative effects of it. Earth is just to overpopulated with people causing harm to our environment, that there is no way very little we can do to reduce it, but instead we should spend our money into fixing the problem.

I think they pushed the passport/ID card until 2009, but I'm not too sure. It doesn't matter much to me, since I rarely go into the US (and if I do it's usually by plane), but I expect it'll just further hurt the tourism industry for cities along the border.
I also agree that we need to rely on advanced technology to help reduce global warming, things like alternate fual sources. In the meantime, we should also try to reduce the amount of waste we produce individually. Small efforts can still have an impact.
Does anyone here read the magazine Canadian Geographic? In the first issue this year they began a series on the 4th International Polar Year, which actually runs from 2007 - 2009. Scientists from more than 50 countries around the world are working together to perform all sorts of research in the Arctic, lead by Canadian scientists. The Canadian focus will be on global warming, mainly, I think. It's all very interesting.

I believe the passport requirement for land travel to the U.S. was pushed to 2009. As of right now, however, you must have a passport to enter the U.S. by air or ship.
On a different note, I just got back from Vancouver and the latest storm tore a hole in the dome at BC Place and they had to collapse the roof! It is so sad. :( When I was very young I took a tour of BC Place before it opened and it was incredible. Of course, after living in Vancouver for so long you get used to seeing the stadium, but now that the roof is under repair it looked so strange.
Speaking of hockey, I live in Calgary and just saw the Flames/Panthers game on Thursday. A good friend of mine has season tickets right on the centre line on the second tier and the view is perfect! Anyway, I figured it would be a very low key, low scoring game since the Panthers are at the bottom of the league. Thankfully, I was wrong and the Panthers put in a good show and the Flames were down by two goals in the final minutes of the third period. People started leaving thinking the game was over when Calgary scored with two minutes left and then scored again a minute later to force overtime. Calgary scored in overtime to win the game, but I was impressed with the Panthers. The icing on the cake was the gold medal win for the Juniors the next morning. This is why I love hockey!

Actually, (and I only know this because I have become a frequent traveller to Canada), you must have a paassport to travel between Canada and The States by air, but by land and by ship is not until a later year. I forgot the year because I usually just fly anyway. I actually think it was 2010.

Oh, CCG you cannot be marrying a Canadian and not like hockey! He does like hockey, right? Anyway, it's an awesome sport whether you watch it on TV or live. The fights are fun to watch because they often serve as a catharsis for the fans and other team members. It's a fast game and there is a lot of tension both on and off the ice!

We are similar but so different. Having lived in Vancouver and it being so close to Seattle I've been there more times than I can count and along the Pacific Coast. I've also traveled from Seattle through the northern states to Chicago and back (man, that was a trip of a lifetime on a shoestring budget). Then there was my trip to Vegas and my trip to Houston and along the south coast to New Orleans and Alabama. (hot and muggy, but the coast and swamps are incredible). It is a beautiful country and the people are as much a treasure as the geography (got tips on how to be cool from black guys in New Orleans long before Sacha Cohen ever did). So many good times and met so many good people.
Yes, hockey is every bit as exciting as I describe. Just ask any Canadian (except for your fiance, so it appears). And my Flames blanked the Oilers 4 - 0! Way to go!

So the big news in the country this week is that Canadian scientists have discovered 5 genetic links to autism. This breakthrough could allow doctors to screen children in the womb to see if they are predisposed to the condition and allow parents to prepare for the correct treatment for their children to lessen the severity of the autism. Up until now, autism can only be diagnosed in children as young as 2 or 3 years old through psychological tests.

I'm with you max, I think how ever that fixing is more important right now then prevention. I mean its just way to hard to decrease greenhouse emissions that would lead to a significant change, however what we need are funds going directly to technological advances providing solutions to our energy waste…like more dependence on alternative power, finding chemical solutions to filtering our industry smoke stacks, our vehicle exhaust pipes, etc…
While I hate global warming, I hate winter just as much(as of this year) lol

My solution: reward Canadians for using alternate methods (public transportation, electric/hybrid cars, partial solar-heat) and increase funding in developing alternate fuel sources (wind, hydrogen). At the same time, or even instead, they could tax people for doing the opposite (carbon tax).
It's going to cost money. Jobs are going to be cut, but new jobs will also be created in new fields (whether it be research, development or management). Unfortunately it will likely take the extinction of polar bears or some natural disaster to convince the government that it's worth the money.

Nothing will ever be accomplished in regards to reducing greenhouse gases unless the United States, China and India agree to targeted reductions, which they have so far refused to do. The United States along emits nearly ten times the C02 that Canada does.
In terms of overall global CO2 emissions, Canada's per capita contribution is actually quite large but our overall contribution to global warming is really very small. That means that we can do a lot to reduce our per capita production of greenhouse gases, but the reduction would have neglible affect on the global situation.

There are also rumours that he may go back to Edmonton during the summer, but I'm not sure of the likelyhood of that.
Did you all hear that a poll conducted by the BBC ranked Canada as the best country? (I believe it was image-wise). I think it was out of a list of 32 or so.
Yeah, I don't think that's all that likely, but I'll let the puckheads dream.

Biggest NHL game of the season is on tonight - Leafs vs Habs! The classic rivalry continues, if the Leafs win in regulation time they will knock Montreal out of 8th spot for the playoffs.

I might as well just come out and say it, I'm not the biggest fan of hockey, and if not forced by others I usually don't watch it. And yes I've have had my igloo egged before, after telling people I don't like watching hockey that much :p

FREE? I can't think of a single web site. However, if you have a fairly simple tax return you can do it yourself. It's incredibly easy to do as long as you have the schedules, but if you're married and have deductions and such it can get complicated.
The filing deadline is April 30th, although I don't know why anyone worries about this as I never filed my tax returns on time until I got an accountant. While I don't recommend it, Revenue Canada is not going to come after you if you fail to file your return on April 30th. Leave it for a few years though, and they will eventually send you a certified letter. I, ah, heard from a friend that they do that. :p My best friend works for CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) and while scolding me for not filing a return, told me that the CRA is never going to take anyone to court for not filing a return unless it makes the CRA money. The CRA is only concerned with those it feels owe the govenment money.
If your taxes are really that complicated that you need tax software, save your money and go and see an accountant. They know the law and will maximize your deductions and refund amount. Don't even bother with H&R Block. This is what I do now and I am never late.

I love Great Big Sea :) I got to see them in 2005 at Live 8, but it was a brief performance because the airline lost their instruments.
The dollar is finally at parity with the US dollar. That's pretty cool :) I've been doing most of my shopping online at American websites because the stores here haven't evened out the prices yet. For instance, Smallville season 6 here is $50-something, while I got it online for $36 US (so $36 Canadian). I'd love to support our economy, but I'd like to see it do something for us first.

Sony announced the release of a new 40 GB PS3 model today and the pricing is exactly the same in both the United States and Canada. ($399). They also dropped the price of the 80 GB model in the U.S. and Canada to $499, which is currently at $659 in most stores.
Of course, watch for Futureshop to tack on $50 to the price for no particular reason.
Eventually the prices will reach parity, or close to parity. Retailers need time to clear out current inventory they bought when the Canadian dollar was lower in value. That is the situation my company is in now. We placed orders for our products months ago when the dollar was not worth as much. It is going to take at least until January for that stock to sell through and be replaced by new stock purchased with a stronger dollar.

I read in the paper that Walmart is already selling greeting cards, wrapping paper, books and magazine at the American price.
I know that Walmart started selling video games at the American price about two weeks ago, a welcome development. It seems Futureshop and Bestbuy are matching the price drop.

Oh, OK. :)
Anyway, it's nice to see the rise in the dollar having at least some of a beneficial effect.
To be honest, I'd rather our dollar be slightly under the American. That way we would benefit from pricing that would closely match our American cousins while maintaining a small cost advantage for Canadian manufacturers.

I am not an expert in this area, however, I would not be surprised to see that the Canadian dollar will start falling when the Yanks will have a new administration in 2009.
I believe that the value of a currency has to do with confidence, and not many people are confident in the state of the US Government.

I currently live in Ontario, and warn you it sucks overall here lol. The fun is where ever the coasts are, East coast is cheaper then the west coast, but the west coast is more beautiful. Halifax is an amazing place for a younger generation, but west coast is more for adventurous and for outdoor folks. I’ve haven’t been out west yet, but that’s what everyone says. However I’ve been to Prince Edward Island and man oh man is that a nice place to visit. Canada seems to get more aggressive and more dangerous every game they play together, the chemistry on that team is dangerous in itself . Should be a great battle against the slovaks.

Wow, 1,500 posts too! Might as well make a few maple syrup shout-outs to some of the Canadian content that pops into SV.
The blue Daily Planet news box? That's the box of the Toronto Star, the paper where Joe Shuster, Superman's illustrator got his first taste of the press as a paperboy. Even the masthead looks similar.
Chloe recuperates in the Yukon during S5's Arrival. The Yukon is one of three territories in Canada. Which means Lex must have pulled some strings with Foreign Affairs to get himself up there. And yes, we claim the location of the Fortress of Solitude, Clark surely picks up a double-double from Timmy's before checking in with Jor-El.
Oh, and Toronto's not on the radar on SV (well, other than the Daily Planet influence ;) ). Vancouver's locations all over the place due to filming there, Clark actually goes to Montreal to find Edward Teague and tie up some Veritas loose ends ... but when is Lois, Ollie or whoever going to catch a connecting flight through T.O.'s Pearson Int'l Airport?! Hello, 20th busiest airport in the world?! The least Clark could do is barge into Watchtower someday and say: "Lex can't hide in Toronto forever. Someday, he'll have to go through Pearson."

With Nikita being picked up for Season 2, those of us in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area for those outside the 416 / 905 area) can indulge in more random picking out of Toronto / GTA locations and landmarks on the show.
A few that come to mind:
-They used the back of City Hall to stand for the UN building in New York. City Hall already had previous TV credits in Star Trek:TNG as an alien metropolis!
-It looks like Alex's Division loft is somewhere near the Entertainment District past the Princess of Wales theatre. (Or possibly Distillery District?). My guess it's King St. West, so we know Alex was eating well with all the bistros around.
-They've used Union Station, most recently for Nikita and CIA-guy Ryan's rendezvous about the black box.
-They used that defunct subway station under Bay Station that the tv shows and movies filming here use regularly. Michael must have queued up for next month's Metropass.
-Nikita escaped the Langley HQ via what looks like the underground PATH (a sort-of underground tunnel/shopping network) in Toronto's downtown financial district. Hey, she had to top up her RRSPs before dodging those CIA and Division kill-teams!
Let the summer begin, my maple-sugared brethren.
