In the fall of 2003 a 12 episode thriller series with a superhero theme was aired in Sweden. The title was De Drabbade, which could be translated into something like "The Victims" or "The Cursed". The story revolves about a mystic force sweeping over Scandinavia. A group of chosen people whom all have suffered great losses and traumas are being exposed to this force, giving them supernatural powers compensating their weaknesses, pretty much like the FoTW´s in Smallville. Not only is this an excellent show with lots of action, drama and suspense. It also contains many similarities to our beloved Smallville, both when it comes to characters, plots and other elements.
De Drabbade begins in Scotland in the 1600´s, following a woman named Adelyn Saville, who has actually lived in real life and was procecuted for being a witch. In the show, she has written prophecies about things that will occur in modern day, including a battle between the Bright and the Dark side, which may result in the Armageddon. The prophecies were written in a secret language she invented herself, sort of like Ezra Small. You could also make references to the Kryptonian language.
Annalena is a girl who lives on a farm in Finland. She is chosen to be the Hunter, whose job is to kill all the people that the Force has been passed onto. Can you say Van in Extinction? She often has blackouts, either to talk to Adelyn´s spirit (just like Jor-El talking to Clark), to kill a powered person or to write down a message from Adelyn. One time she paints one of the symbols in Adelyn´s language on the barn at her farm. Like when Clark made the sign for 'Hope' in Rosetta. Annalena has no control over herself when she turns int o the Hunter, but she is trying her best to defy the fate that she was chosen for. This and the fact she is some sort of superhuman, makes her appear as a female version of Clark.
Jocke Modin is a columnist for a daily newspaper. His brother Henrik got the ability to look into the future, which drove him into suicide. Unaware of the circumstances around his Henrik´s death, Jocke starts investigating what he believes to be some sort of international conspiracy. In terms of personality and attitude Jocke is like a male version of Chloe Sullivan. Ironically, he gets romantically involved with Annalena.
Some of the victims of the Force tend to resemble some FoTW´s in Smallville. Jasmine was a doormat who is always doing as she´s told until she suddenly can make everybody do whatever she tells them to. (Bob and Kyle in Hug). Göran had his career, marriage and life destroyed by other people´s lies. He got the ability to make people tell the truth whenever he asked a question. (Chloe in Truth). Ishmael was an immigrant who couldn´t blend in with his new environment and was obsessed with his female psychotherapist. When he became a shapeshifter as he could look like any person, living or dead, he turned into the therapist´s boyfriend, trying to take his place (Tina Greer in X-Ray and Visage).
De Drabbade also resembles Smallville in a few themes both shows are being worked upon. The worry about how what the future might turn up like and the choices and decisions all people make in life, which presumably never can be done to death.
