Sharkie's Previews and Predictions - ACC
The ACC starts a new chapter this year. The edition of Boston College gives the ACC a new 12-team divisional alignment. The top finishers for the Atlantic and Coastal divisions will meet in the Inaugural ACC Championship game at season's end.
TEAMS (Divisional Alignment in paranthesis A for Atlantic or C for Coastal)
Boston College (A) - BC has won five straight bowl games, an NCAA record, including a Continental Tire Bowl win over new ACC brother UNC last year. They will use Virgina Tech and Miami's breakout seasons, finishing 1st and 3rd in the league respectfully as inspiration, and the teams and coaches at the former Big East schools believe BC will do it.
Clemson (A) - Charlie Whithurst should be better this year, and with key games at home (Texas A&M, Miami, BC and Florida State) Clemson could be a dark horse in the Atlantic race. Things would be easier for Clemson if they got FSU in the beginning of the year, not the end.
Duke (C) - The usual ACC whipping boy will continue to be that team in the new ACC, for years to come.
Florida State (A) - This is not the year for Bowden's boys to have problems. Wyatt Sexton's bout with Lyme diease makes FSU's run to be in the first ACC Title game much much harder. That, and the Noles' most important divisional games are away from home.
Georgia Tech (C) - Georgia Tech has the ACC's best defense, a potentionally great QB who has been plagued by inconsistancy, and opens against a team that was left out of the National Title Game in a controversial BCS decision. Sound familiar? It's similar to Va Tech last year. The Jackets hope lightning strikes twice.
Maryland (A) - The Terps are rebuilding after a tough season last year. And this year won't be a blast either, with a tough schedule. The Terps best hope is to finish second in the division, but that too may be too much.
Maimi (C) - Miami should be better, with 11 returning starters on D. The Question is if the new QB will be ready to role. If he isn't, playing in the toughest division in the ACC will take a toll.
North Carolina (C) - The hoops school shocked everyone with big wins over Miami, Ga Tech, and a bowl trip. The Heels want more, but they'll be lucky to get four wins. Anything can happen, but the schedule is a killer.
NC State (A) - Last years defense ruled, but offense sucked. Without offensive improvement, NC State will again make a bowless season a reality.
Virginia (C) - Virginia has a strong team with a favorable schedule, a good thing to have in the tough Coastal division. The lines have to improve however, if they want to win the division.
Virginia Tech (C) - The defending champs have a lot of talent returning from last years 10-3 team that was so good. Yet with a new, experiance lacking QB may not be able to repeat last year's success.
Wake Forest (A) - The Wake Forest team has made some strides recently, but it won't be enough to take on the ACC Atlantic big boys.
ATLANTIC CHAMP PICK: Boston College
COASTAL CHAMP PICK: Georgia Tech
ACC CHAMPION: Georgia Tech
Projected Standings
Atlantic:
Boston College
Clemson
Florida State
Maryland
NC State
Wake Forest
Coastal:
Georgia Tech
Va Tech
Miami
Virginia
North Carolina
Duke

Sharkie's Previews and Predictions - Big Ten
The Big Ten is one of the nations top conferences, and this year will be a juggernaut. The conference champ will have to earn it.
Teams
Illonios - Ron Zook inherits a lackluster team that needs some new blood. He's the guy to do it. Zook is a terrific recruiter who will ignite a new fire in the team. They won't win the Big Ten just yet, but they can make some strides.
Indiana - The Hoosiers have been called a pure basketball school, with no chance of winning in football. That's not entirely the case, like the Illini, Indiana is starting a new chapter, and with some hard work will be a factor in the Big 10.
Iowa - The Hawkeyes have exploded onto the scene and will again be a major factor in the Big Ten title hunt.
Michigan - Loaded is the best way to describe Michigan. There is a lot of talent, and they could make a run to the Rose Bowl.
Michigan State - The Spartans have enough talent to pull a few upsets and drive the big boys nuts. But not enough to win a title.
Minnesota - Minnesota has looked great up until a gaff against Michigan destroys their season. If they can get over that hump, they will win the Big Ten.
Northwestern - A whooping boy with some gasps of brillance, Northwestern should be better this year.
Ohio State - The Buckeyes should be back to their brillance of the 3001 season, and if they can get by Texas early, they could contend for the National Title.
Penn State - After making it to the Capital One bowl in 2002 and losing to Auburn 13 - 9 Penn State exploded into mediocre. 2 wins in 03 and 4 in 04 are not how Joe Pa wants to go out. They can get better, but the work ethic must go up.
Purdue - The Boilermakers have some good talent, and they have the best schedule missing front runners Ohio State and Michigan. This guarentees a top 3 leauge finish.
Wisconsion - With Barry Alverez announcing his retirement, his players will want him to go out big, look for Wisconsion to pull some special things this season.
Projected Standings
1. Purdue
2. Iowa
3. Ohio State
4. Michigan
5. Minnesota
6. Wisconsion
7. Northwestern
8. Illonios
9. Penn State
10. Michigan State
11. Indiana

So you really think Purdue will beat Iowa? The only real challenges before Purdue will be against Iowa State, who always fight really hard, and Ohio State, who we whooped last year.
If we beat those two teams, Purdue will be facing a psyched up Hawk team with a 5 game winning streak. It's at Purdue, but there are going to be a ton of Hawk fans in the stands.
It's going to be a battle, that's for sure. We have a lot of terriffic starters returning, and a lot of amazing new recruits. Adding an effective rushing game this year will really put us on a new level, able to compete with, and beat, any team in the nation.

I would argue with your assessment of Michigan, but if Breaston or Avant get hurt then we are sorely in like of experienced talent at wide receiver. With Hart starting, and Kevin Grady playing as a freshmen...the backs will be great. Watch out for Antonio Bass...he's a true freshmen that is going to play a Slash role.

Iowa will beat Purdue, but Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsion will beat each other up enough to keep each other 6-2 and 5-3 in the conference, while Purdue will go 7-1.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Informed that his team had been chosen as the preseason favorite to win a third straight Big Ten football title, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr had this to say Monday to a huge gathering of media, many of whom had voted for the Wolverines.
"I hope as usual you know what you are talking about," Carr said at the conference's annual preseason gathering. "Our goals are high."
Michigan, which has played in back-to-back Rose Bowls, was followed in the preseason balloting by Ohio State and Iowa, which tied for the title a year ago with a 7-1 conference record and has won at least 10 games three straight seasons.
I think Iowa has more challenges then Ohio State and Iowa State!Oh I dont know-maybe MICHIGAN!

Sharkie's Previews and Predictions - Pac-10
The Pac-10 has had two straight national champions but, with the exception of two other teams, has been marred by mediocre.
TEAMS
Arizona - Mike Stoops is trying to turn around a fledging program, but the next step is still a mile away. A 3-4 win season will be a good showing.
Arizona State - Missing Cal and getting USC at home is a huge plus for this team. Outside of USC, the conference schedule is a cake walk. The non-conference schedule is evil, traveling to LSU is not fun.
California - Jeff Tedford is an amazing coach who took the bears from 1-10 in 2001 to 10-2 in 04. The magic will continue in Berkeley. Like ASU, Cal gets USC at home. Outside of that game, the bears should be 10-0.
Oregon - The Ducks missed the bowl scene in a rebuilding year. They should be fine for 7 wins. With USC coming to Eugene, the toughest place to play in the Pac-10, they could pull off an upset after a possin;e USC loss to Arkansas.
Oregon State - The Beavers will be tough, just not conference title tough
Stanford - The Cardinal were bad last year and fired their coach. Conventional wisdom says 3 wins is the way to go.
UCLA - A good season turned to dispare when UCLA lost to Wyoming. But things should turn around. Bowls will be flying to UCLA, or maybe I should say UCLA will fly to a bowl
USC - Everyone expects me to pick USC to win. But I can't. My conciouse says no way. First, the heart of the team was Norm Chow's offense. Their defense was okay, but could have cost them a game or two (in reality they had four close games) when the offense helped them out. Plus several other assistants left. Many reports cite trouble in Pete-dice. Plus the schedule is tough, with 3 highly probable conference loses.
Washington - The Huskies had 1 win last year, it may get better, to 3 or 4.
Washington State - It hasn't been the same since Mike Price left to be fired by Alabama. It could get better, but don't bet on it.
Projected Standings
California
USC
Arizona State
Oregon State
Oregon
UCLA
Washington State
Stanford
Arizona
Washington

Sharkie's Previews and Predictions - Big 12
Outside the states of Texas and Oklahoma, the Big-12 has been a fairly weak conference.
TEAMS - Divisions in (N or S)
Baylor (S) - A weak filter-feeder, Baylor will be more of the same.
Colorado (N) - The defending Big 12 North Champs will try to get back to the top again, this time without a scandal in their mists.
Iowa State (N) - The Cyclones came close to winning the north last year, but didn't finish. The places are there for a new run and a possible trophy at the end.
Kansas (N) - The JayHawks finished last in the conference but weren't all that bad. A few more breaks and they'd have been in the title game.
Kansas State (N) - They were pretty bad for a team that went BCS Bowling the year before. Missing a bowl last year may have been a kick in the pants for this team.
Missouri (N) - The Tigers were supposed to be excellent. But they didn't do so hot. With another year of maturity, they could be this year's Auburn. The pieces are in place with a vetern QB who underperformed last year.
Nebraska (N) - The Cornhuskers did something the program had not done in 35 years, miss the postseason. Missing a bowl snapped a NCAA record streak, and not one the red state wanted to do.
Oklahoma (S) - Two straight BCS title game losses have made people forget about sucklahoma, and who'd blame them?
Oklahoma State (S) - Losing a coach always stings, and it'll linger as OK State tries to navigate around a conference that's a little bit better than them.
Texas (S) - Beating Michigan really pumped up the Longhorns. And perhaps this will be their year.
Texas A&M (S) - They did well for a while, then Tennessee embarassed the hell out of them, showing the weaknesses of the Big 12. Look for them to be more like the Cotton Bowl team.
Texas Tech (S) - They have the potential to be better with the leauge as a whole in a down year.
Projected Standings
North
1. Missouri
2. Colorado
3. Iowa Statwe
4. Nebraska
5. Kansas
6. Kansas State
South
1. Texas
2. Texas A&M
3. Oklahoma State
4. Texas Tech
5. Oklahoma
6. Baylor

Nonsense, like most everything the NCAA does. All flash, no substance. They're only against this if there are too many tv cameras around.
Shouldn't they also ban Illinois or Chicago from any school name, as well?

Here I will try to answer some preseason questions with my own personal opinions.
Q: Will USC three-pete in the national title race?
A: They have the talent, but history says it won't happen. No team has won three straight national titles. And my inkling is that will not change for USC. Losing the QB coach, offensive line coach, and Offensive cordnator all to the NFL is very problematic. Ed Oregeon the Defensive line coach was said to be the heart of the defensive coaching staff, he is now at Ole Miss. Mix that in with losing five starters on the defensive front seven from a D that wasn't that good in the first place? Find someone else to be national champions. Plus they have the toughest road schedule in the Pac-10.

Q: Can Auburn repeat the magical run, starting at #17 and finishing @ #2 in the final polls? If not, who can?
A: Possibly. Auburn has a lot of young talent on the team. If you believe Tommy Tuberville, they're more talented and have more depth than they did in 2004. The problem is the SEC. The league is tough, and can make good teams look bad. Auburn has to travel to Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia. Three very tough road venues to go to. They also open against Georgia Tech. A trip to Atlanta is not out of the question, the talent is there. But a tough schedule can make great teams look only good.
Plus, there is history working against Auburn.
- No SEC team has repeated as league champion since Tennessee's 1998 title.
- No SEC team has gone back to back undefeated in the league since Florida did it in 1995-96.
History in Auburn's favor:
- Since 1998 the league champion has been from the Eastern division 3 times and the Western Division four times.
- Since 2000, the projected Divisional Champions from the SEC Media days have not won their divisions. That is bad news for Tennessee and LSU, good news for Auburn.
Other teams that could surprise? By definition we don't know who they are. But ESPN put together a list of potential surprise teams
which you can read here (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview05/news/story?id=2128964) I'd add some more teams, particullarly Georgia Tech and Arkansas.

I don't know if Purdue would really be a surprise. They are getting alot of attention this year. They could be just as dangerous as Ohio State and Michigan, and they don't have to play either team.

Q: Which is the nation's best conference?
A: This is an easy question to ask, but it's not easy to answer. The power swings from time to time based on any number of factors, such as recruiting and scheduling. For example, the ACC schools may have an edge in recruiting since the conference is expanding, that's huge to get kids to play. The truth is what happens this year will determine the best of this year, but we can make some educated guesses.
1. Forget the Non-BCS conferences, it may seem cruel, but there is a reason only one Non-BCS team is ranked in the preseason coaches poll (#19 Boise State). Most of those teams can't compete with the big boys.
2. The Big East is out. After losing BC, VT, and Miami the firepower is gone. They add Louisville, Cincinatti and South Florida to replace the ACC 3. Louisville is a peg below BC, and Cincinatti and South Florida are middle and bottom heavy teams.
3. The Pac-10 was terrible last year, sending only 4 teams to a bowl. It should be better, but only 3 teams (USC, Cal, ASU) look to be deadly good. The rest of the league should be food for the big boys.
4. The Big 12 boosts Texas, Oklahoma, and 10 other teams. The North is miserably bad. The South isn't that much better, with only Texas and Oklahoma doing anything of note, including Oklahoma's two straight blunders in the national title game.
5. The ACC is tough to read with the addition of BC, but they are a tough conference and once the year is over they may be the best of the best.
6. The Big Ten is constantly tough, and this year looks brutal. Michigan, Ohio State, and Iowa all look to be National title contenders, with Purdue a Dark Horse. Wisconsion and Minnesotta should be good as well. Those six teams make the league killer.
7. The SEC has been called the premier league in the sport. Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Auburn and LSU look like National title contenders. Alabama could also contend. Add to that the league has had three straight teams in National Title Contention (Georgia would have made it to the NTG had Miami or OSU lost in 02, LSU won it all in 2003, Auburn was left out of the game in controvesry in 04) and the only conference to have 2 BCS champions (Tennessee 98 and LSU 03). Also the Title game puts it a step above the Big 10 in my opinion. Because that's one extra game you need to win to get the title.
All this can help you draw you own opinions, but I'm a fan of settling things on the field. After bowl season we'll have a good measure of who is the best.

Hey, I am biased but I try to be fair. I look at how hard it is to win the conference, and the conference title game makes it a little bit harder. So that's why I say the SEC is slightly better, but it's really neck and neck.
Rosey
08-12-2005, 10:00 PM
Yeah, I'm biased myself. I find it hard to be objective about teams I do or don't like. And I really only follow teams I'm interested in. Never followed any SEC teams even though the folks are from Kentucky and a set of Grandparents from Tennessee and I've spent lots of time in both places. Kentucky is never much good in football, and for some reason I haven't figured out I've just never liked Tennessee (sports, not the state).
As an Oklahoma State Dad and season ticker holder I do follow Oklahoma State sports and football. Sharkie I noticed that you had OSU coming in dead last in the Big XII South, behind even Baylor. Now Baylor did get their first league win in years last season when they beat A&M at home, but they will be lucky to equal that this year. The Big XII South overall will be better this year with improved A&M and Texas Tech, and unfortunately for Baylor they are in the South and will likely lose all South games. As for Oklahoma State they should win all of their easy non-conference games and then take Missouri and Colorado at home. Texas and Texas Tech will be harder games but at least they are also at home. Oklahoma is an away game for OSU (no matter what Sportsline says), but hey, I was in the stands when OSU shocked OU at home and gave Stoops his lone home loss. You can never predict those rivalry games.
Don't mark OSU down for Les Miles leaving for LSU. I liked Miles because he was a Michigan man, but he was a little Bo Schembechler conservative. Gundy has let those boys know that he means business and will open up the offense. Only problem at quarterback is deciding which is better. Vernand Morency is gone to the pros but they have quality replacements waiting their turn. They are short of experienced receivers and defensive backs, especially with the tragic death of Vernon Grant in a traffic accident this summer. The lines are as good or better than last year. I expect OSU to at least equal their 7-5 mark from last year and am hopeful of their doing better. But in any event, much better than Baylor and last place!!

I've always wanted to do this, use NCAA Football games to see how they'd pick the winners. So I created a new dynasty and did nothing. I changed no schedules, redshirted no players, I didn't even give the coach a name. So, without further delay, here are the 11 predicted conference chamos, the major bowl winners, and the Mythical National Champ.
Some Surprises:
Clemson won the ACC Atlantic while Florida State finished 5th.
Virginia Tech finished 4th in the ACC Coastal
The Big 12 North was stronger than the Big 12 South, with three nine plus win teams to the South's 1 9 win team before the bowls/Championship games.
Every Big 12 North team is bowl eligable.
Oklahoma State and Baylor tied for dead last in the Big 12 South (Sorry Rosey)
Pittsburg and Louisville tied in the Big East. For 3rd. USF won the conference
Cal and Arizona State, 2 Pac-10 favorites, finished tied for last in the conferenceT
South Carolina finished third in the SEC East.
It looked like the SEC West was like I would expect, with LSU and Auburn finished 1 & 2, respectfully. Then you get Ole Miss and Mississippi State who finished last in the division last year.
ACC
Title Game: Clemson 26 #6 Miami 28
Conference Champ: Miami
Big Ten - Purdue*
Big Twelve
Title Game: *#1 Texas 35 #3 Colorado 21
Conference Champ Texas*
Big East - South Florida (USF)
C-USA - UAB
MAC - Northern Illonios
Mountain West - San Diego State
Pac-10 - USC
SEC
Title Game: #2 LSU 28 #20 Tennessee 31
Tennessee Conference Champ
Sun Belt - Florida International
WAC - Fresno State*
* A team I picked to win their confernce/division. I picked 3 Conference champs the same as the computer for NCAA Football 2005.
PreBowl Best Offense and Defense:
#1 Scoring and Yardage Defense: AUBURN
#1 Scoring and Yardage Offense: USC
Heisman:
Winner: Matt Lienart - USC QB
2nd: Adrain Peterson - Oklahoma HB
3rd: Texas Tech QB #10
4th: Tre Smith - Auburn HB
5th: Purdue HB#32
The BCS Controversy: #2 in the polls Missouri misses out on the National Title game for a rematch with Texas in the Rose Bowl. They get passed over for a surprising Fresno State team.
Biggest Bowl Confusion: An 8-3 Auburn team manages only an Independence Bowl Bid *Scratches head*
Major Bowls: (Winners in BOLD
Capitol One Bowl: Iowa vs. LSU 37-17
Sugar Bowl: Purdue vs. Tennessee 41-28
Fiesta Bowl: South Florida (USF) vs. Southern Cal (USC) 56 - 21
Orange Bowl: Missouri vs, Miami 28-14
Rose Bowl: Fresno State vs. Texas 45-38
NATIONAL CHAMPION: FRESNO STATE
Guess Texas still has big-game-itis. :rotfl:

1989 Auburn beat Bama 30-20. I was 7 at the time. It was better with Texas losing. :D
I grew up within 35 miles of Ann Arbor and have still never been to a Michigan game.
Went to a small engineering school where all the sports were division II except for hockey, where we were division I. I got spoiled the first year real bad too, they won the NCAA championship over the hated Minnesota Gophers. Our league at that time (Western Collegiate Hockey Association - WCHA) consisted of Tech, Michigan, MI State, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, North Dakota, Notre Dame, Colorado College, and Denver University. Hockey was one time when I would root against Michigan, they were probably even bigger rivals than Minnesota. You ever been to a college hockey game? Alabama-Huntsville is probably the closest place to you to see a division I game. Highly recommended, much better than the pros, as is college basketball for me.

Yeah, I remember the Texas game, but the Alabama game is the first one I remember really understanding the game. So I decided to change it to that one.
Never seen college hockey, but maybe I'll check it out. I have a cousin at UAH.

I have yet to attend a College football game, even though I love the sport.
They don't sell beer, I hate crowds, and they are just too expensive. Besides, you get to see more of the game when you watch it on tv.

My family is from Ypsilanti and Manchester, though it was my Mom's best friend from Texas that went to UM. She is my only aunt that I care for, and she took me to my only college game a year after I graduated high school. I saw Michigan vs. Indiana. Not a great matchup I mind you, but for a Texas boy to see his favorite team finally it was amazing. There is just nothing like the Big House. I plan on going to the Michigan/Ohio State game 3 years from now...I can't afford it this year, and I'll be damned if I go to the Horseshoe!!!
Oh, I'm also a Texas fan by the way...so the Rose Bowl hurt, but if one team is gonna win...I guess I'm glad it's Texas.

While visiting home once drove by the The Big House to show it to a kid and caught a funny sight. This old guy stopped his car in the intersection, got out and bowed with his arms outstretched towards the stadium three or four times, then got back in and drove off.

LSU is really getting the shaft this week because of the hurricane. They cancelled all practices, so if they do have their game on Saturday, they'll be going in cold. That, and their stadium, which is still under construction, will be thoroughly trashed.
North Texas could pull out an upset.

It won't happen this weekend.
LSU announced in a statement it had chosen to reschedule its contest so the campus could help the recovery effort.
"The scope of this tragedy is becoming more evident as time passes, and LSU's focus in on assisting the recovery effort of our state," LSU chancellor Sean O'Keefe said. "LSU is a primary evacuation site, and we are not going to conduct any activities that could deter our mission of assisting in the recovery."
A number of athletic facilities on the LSU campus are being used in the recovery effort. The resulting traffic from a football game could have seriously impacted the efforts of emergency medical vehicles arriving from the New Orleans area.
"The events of [Monday] and [Tuesday] morning have made it clear that this is not the time to play a football game," said LSU athletics director Skip Bertman on Tuesday. "This is a dire situation that rivals any in the history of our state, and our priorities are on participating in recovery efforts."

I a battle of two once great coaches, the Cock and Load Offense (formly known as the Fun and Gun) was huge. The Gamecock QB threw for 300+ yards. But if Stevie wants to win in the SEC, his D needs to step it up. A 24-15 win over UCF (now on a 16 game losing streak) won't cut it in the deadly east.

Got home from the hospital just in time to catch the end of the TCU defeat of OU...so beautiful that was. I work 10 minutes away from campus, and I know I'll be hearing recoicing in the streets!!
Michigan looked somewhat flat against Northern Illinois, and some of that could be their issue with mobile quaterbacks...that still bothers me. The other could be Notre Dame who we have next week at home. That game doesn't seem so much like a push over now.
Texas decided to roll over ULALA 60-3, which is exactly what they should have done. Vince Young was pulled from the game about 3 minutes into the second half. No reason to get him hurt before the Ohio State game next week. After they pulled Young, I believe they threw the ball a total of 5 times in basically two quarters!!!

Yo SOONER fans.... What happened???? yeah when you loose to TCU pulled off the what some people call an "UPSET" but I knew that OU would not be as good as they were last year or the year before, I mean dont get me wrong Peterson is a pretty good back, but they aint winning the BIG XII this year, that title will go to Texas
In one of the Ugliest offensive games ever played my Seminoles had the kicking game in their direction this time and the defense recorded 9 sacks against the young Miami QB, but hey a win is win and when you loose 6 strait against the caines,, we will take that. The "U" Qb began to pick things up in the 2nd half and he looks to be promising but the Noles need help in wither running Xavier Lee in some more practice and scout games but he needs to play more...
I cant wait to see Texas play Ohio State and that game will be very awesome and will show if Vincent Young can do what I believe he will...

It does give me a little more of an upset stomach seeing how Notre Dame beat Pittsburgh. Last year, Mike Hart wasn't starting for Michigan when we played Notre Dame. I am still wary of our defense against the run. Brady Quinn looked good, but I am not sold on him just ripping us to shreds. I just feel a lot better knowing that Avant is healthy. His hands are just like glue, coupled with Breaston's breakaway ability...well that just gives me a an easier feel.
Texas/Ohio State...I'm worried, really worried. There are just so many variables. Vince could show up big, but Selvin Young needs to step up in the running game. Ramonce Taylor looked good against ULALA, but OSU isn't that. If Vince doesn't have a running game to relieve some pressure it's going to be a long game. I'm also worried about the crowd. Texas has never played a road game like this. Texas/OU is split down the middle. Texas A&M on the road is just over 82,000. The Horseshoe is 20,000 more. If it were Michigan it would be bad enough, but it's a night game and a first time meeting between these two....both top 5. I don't know...I just have a feeling I'm gonna be sick. I hope I'm wrong.

You know a lot's going to be made out of OSU going for that 50-yard field goal but if the receiver-- don't remember his name-- had just caught the TD pass that hit him in the hands the end would've been very different. Texas still could have won, but it would've been much tougher.

I think I've finally recovered enough from OU's embarrasing home loss to TCU to post. And to think that I had a nephew out from Michigan to see his first big time college football games. We would have been better off to have gone to a good HS game like Edmond North vs. Edmond Santa Fe, Jenks vs. Tulsa Union, or Moore vs. Westmoore. The win over Tulsa wasn't much better, no passing by OU at all in the second half. Saturday's trip to Pasadena should be interesting.
At least Oklahoma State won their game (we went to both home openers) and then the game at FAU, but they're going to have to get a lot better to win a league game. Surprisingly the defense was pretty good (except against the quick short passes), it was the offense that was lacking.

Then it's on to destroy Texas Jan. 4. Not so. If you look at the stats, Texas leads USC in just about every single catagory, so they aren't the best offensive team this year. They have a good offense, but it's hardly the best ever. I'd wager Nebraska of 95 or Miami of 2001 was better. Heck, even Auburn of 2004 had a superior back field and better numbers in terms of ypp and a much better offensive line rank.
Players with better #'s than Reggie Bush:
Deangelo Williams, and he's been hurt for four games.
Jerome Harrison
Garrett Wolfe
Reggie Bush is better returning punts than he is rushing. In all honesty, he doesn't deserve the heisman. So many other players out stat him. And Matt Lienart may be one of the most overhyped QB's of all time. He's never finished better than 7th in passing efficency.
Plus, USC has the worst defense of any team ever ranked #1. The last time a defense was ranked so bad on a #1 team (Penn State 1982) they were destroyed by Alabama. Their defense was great last year, ranked #5, but this year it's slumped to #83. Their lucky it's the best in the Pac-10, or they'd be very sorry. This is the first time in USC's title run that they've matched up against the right time. It's the first time in four years the BCS has gotten it right. Now we'll see what USC is really made of, instead of matching up with weaker opponents.

Since that year, a year when Auburn beat three Top 10 teams btw, Auburn has a 22-2 record, an astonoshing 6-1 record against teams ranked in the top 10, two straight SEC Western Division Titles (to go along with five others under Tommy Tuberville), and an SEC championship. As an athlete, you should know that an injury to any player means you take a knee and shut your mouth. I have NEVER in my life seen a more classless disrespect for a player of the game, and another human being.
Then, Pete Carroll sealed his fate when he refused to punt the football. Had he punted, Texas may have not been able to drive all the way down the field. His lack of sportsmenship killed his chances. You never go for it when winning near the 50. He's spat in the face of fair play for two and a half years. Now it;s caught up with him. Thankfully, the good guys won.
The final showing of true Trojan colors was when Matt Lienart said "We were the better team." Hr couldn't say one good thing about Texas.
Also, this shows that Texas, having 2004 Auburn Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik, ran the same scheme Auburn ran. The Tigers could have won that game in 2004. LSU could have won in 2003.
2003 LSU real National Champions
2005 Texas real National Champions.

It is nice to see someone else besides USC atop college football. Texas deserved to win after USC couldn't get the late first down. Where was Reggie Bush on that play? Vince Young was incredible.
The only game I really cared about was Penn State and thankfully they won. Please give up the useless Auburn argument. Nice job against Wisconsin.

It's not a useless argument. We were cheated. If it happened to your team you'd feel the same way.

Auburn played 5 teams with 9 or more wins, 4 or which had 10 or better.
No one defeated us. No one. No one can take that away from us.
Damn right. I really wish that they'd quit BSing about their money and have an 8-team playoff so that the best teams can duke it out like they should so we won't have any "what ifs." I'm so happy that Texas won, USC was quite arrogant.

As a huge fan of Texas, I gotta say it was beautiful to see this come to fruition. VY has done this all year, and really started once he beat my other team, Michigan, last year in the Rose Bowl. USC's horses were just unbelieveable I have to say. Our defense which looked great in the first half, just couldn't get it done in the second, until it mattered most.
I have never seen a great performance in my lifetime other than Wednesday night. I said that one year ago when he did the same thing against Michigan. Vince Young is a quarterback...plain and simple...and even more than that...he's a winner.
I can't fault Carroll for making the call to go for it on 4 and 2. I would have done the same thing. Our defense hadn't stopped White all game. It just seemed odd that they didn't spread the formation just a bit there. Either way hook'em!
Oh, and 9 days until Vince has to make a decision. Either way, I'm happy for the guy, he's amazing and deserves whatever is best for him.

Usually I wouldn't either, but I find Carroll to be a jackass and one thing he did all year was not punt in hopes of running up the score, I found a sense of irony in that not punting eventually lost him the game. A 50 yard drive is much easier to make than an 80 yard drive, so if I was in the situation I'd go for a very high long punt to eat up some time and hope I can stick it in the 5, then let my defense work.

Another solid recruiting year for the SEC, 7 of the 12 teams landed in the Top 25, led by four top 10 finishes by Florida, Georgia, LSU, and Auburn.
Next best conference was the Big 12 with 5.

What does everyone think about the USC - Reggie Bush scandal and should he lose the hiesman if he is ruled ineligable for the 2005 season?

if it turns out to be true then he should lose the Heisman. I remember in 1999 Peter Warrick, who would have obviously been the Heisman winner, lost his chance and wasn't even invited to New York when he got into a little off the field trouble because it violated NCAA rules. Bush's infraction would be one of the biggest violations a player could commit as he allegedly received the house rent free...As such it would only be fair to strip him of that Heisman trophy and award it to Vince Young.
As far as USC having to forfeit every game that Bush played in, I think that'd be a little extreme...

Maybe, but the NCAA rules state that if you have an ineligable player and play him, then you have to lose those games. Georgia Tech just had 3 or so years of games wipped out! It'll be interesting to see what happens. His parent's actions aren't making me feel he's innocent either.

On another USC note, how about their running back, Washington. He spent two years academically ineligable works his butt off and gets a high enough GPA to be reinstated for fall. Pretty good story and I wish him luck. I have a friend who thinks there is something fishy about the situation, but I doubt anyone would try to doctor something with the NCAA already looking closely at the school.

if there are any other razorback fans out there, it's a sad day as the voice of arkansas razorback football died in a car accident last night.
