Just call the show "Metropolis" and have it deal with their early careers in the daily planet.
Seriously how can Clark be a reporter anyway? He has no College degree and zero experience. I hope they actually handle this mess next season.

Isn't Clark technically a copyboy or something, writing stuff with Lois occasionally? Chloe and Lois had no degrees, unless they went back to college in offscreenville.

We heard back in Kara that Chloe was attending night classes at MetU, but in Toxic, Davis referred to her college days as past tense, so either Chloe got her degree early (a strong possibility, given how driven she can be), or she stopped going to classes after her stay in Black Creek.

No technically the writers handled that situation already in the "classiest" way possible. She slept with the editor of the Daily Planet to get a job. A fine example to teach aspiring young people.

nooo she didnt!!!
I didnt like her relationship with the editor, it was sleazy and kind of unprofessional and a stupid decision by the writers BUT if theres one thing that i dont mind is that they clarified that it was not sleeping with him that got her the job!
She even confronted him about it and was like look did why did i get the job?
and he showed her an article he read of hers way before she even met him and that was why she got the job.
PROOF!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OrFW6qFD3A&feature=related
plus it does show that despite not having the education, she still puts in a ton of effort - i mean she went undercover as a cage fighter... she works really hard.
but meh. im still annoyed she didnt have to work...

That scene in Blue was a retcon. Grant said he was going to hire Lois before he ever met her, but in Kara, when they actually met, he had no idea who she was.
For me, I still can't get over the fact that she slept with her boss.

For me, I still can't get over the fact that she slept with her boss.
but that is explainable - he probably just didnt remember her name and hadnt seen her. (lol ok im struggling but still - a retcon does what it says on the tin; it cancels out stuff said before...)
yeah its true though - it should really be on her rules... actually it already kinda is lol
2) Always make a good first impression (and don't screw up with the boss).
just take out the "up with"
Erica Durance herself didn't like it - she kinda made it clear by aying she wouldnt like anymore silly romances for lois and that she thought lois was making a mistake - but i remember she said something in an interview along the lines of - shes young (about 21-22) and everyone makes mistakes when theyre young.

No... The very idea is ridiculous. The man doesn't wanna wear tights (or glasses, it would seem. Seeing how every time, they put glasses on him, in this show, they're instantly gone and never mentioned again), so what's the point..? Do a Superman series, where everything's changed to the point, where there's no reason, to even call the character "Superman" anymore?

Absolutely! Currently they are the only reason I watch Smallville. I personally have little interest in Chloe or Lana or Tess. I want to see Clark's evolution, as well as that of Lois'. It's neat to see a different take on the famous pair.
As for all the people complaining about Lois only getting a job at the DP because she slept with Grant - you're wrong. If that was the case, she would have been fired as soon as Grant was gone.

It's good to see people saying what the think, good for you!
Personally, I don't think I would watch a Superman spin-off with Tom and Erica...I mean, I like both of them, and TW can really pull of the Clark Kent and Superman personas...I just...don't think Tom would look good in the thights...
A movie...that I could see...mainly because of the budget...
But I don't know, I would have to check it out to see if it could work (ajem, different writters please) but...I'm just saying, if I want Superman ala Smallville I can read fanfics...I would prefer if they just leave Supes alone, I get they're doing their version of the story pre-superman...I would just like to see the icon I see every month in his purest form, not coming from so much drama and that stuff...
Yeah...
Ok dammit, you got me, it's because I would hate to see a new Jimmy, happy?

I don't think I would watch it, I love SV and all but I'm not a lois and clark fan, never have been, never will be.
I will be a chlarker till the day I die.
The writers are great to a point, they have the smarts to change a lot of things in SV when it comes to the Myths of superman but the one thing they don't seems to have the smarts for is changing who superman's soulmate is.
To me, Chloe acts more like the iconic Lois Lane than anyone, but thats jmo.

We have had 8 going on 9 seasons of Smallville, having a Lois and Clark spinoff staring Tom and Erica would be implausible. And I probably really wouldn't be interested in it, because at this point it would be just extending Smallville more.
Exedore
06-14-2009, 10:09 AM
I would, provided they get some quality people to manage the show. People like Bryan Miller and Jeph Loeb for example.
Personally, I would like DC/WB to try something different with Superman. One thing that I would really love to see is a Superman show set in the future, at a time when Clark has been Superman for several decades. Lois, his wife, is dead (or she dies in the Pilot) and the rest of his familiar supporting cast has changed a great deal: some of them could be dead, others retired. The world has changed around him. And yet he hasn't changed much. Or even aged much (in reality that is; in public he could be pretending to have aged). Perhaps Clark is the DP's Editor-in-Chief and people are expecting him to retire soon (they think he is very old). He is now faced with the question of what to do with the Clark Kent identity: people will start suspecting that something's wrong if Clark appears to be immortal. It would be interesting to see where his enemies have landed up, what the JLA is like at that point and so on.
In the comics we usually stay either in the present or the far future (26th, 31st centuries, etc). I'd like them to explore the time between these extremes. It would also give the writers a lot of creative room to play with without being restricted too much by canon (basically the "canon" would be the past for this show and the far future; the time in between is open to play with). :)
Given the nature of this show, I think Superman would have to be played by an actor in his 40s. Tom and Erica could be used in flashbacks I suppose. ;)

06-16-2009, 10:53 AM
Well, we already do in a way. The show really isn't set in Smallville anymore, and both Clark and Lois work at the DP. Also, even though you don't have the name "Superman" yet, the RBB is basically the same thing minus the suit and the air. Not to mention the fact that they already started the love triangle made for two angle with the secret phone calls. The only thing that would really change in a new show would be Clark in glasses, the suit, and flight. All the key elements are on "Smallville" right now.
moviefan2k4
06-16-2009, 12:20 PM
And those three story elements are precisely what the producers originally wanted to avoid. They and Welling were all wary of "Smallville" turning into a rehash of the old "Superboy" series.

It is beyond that, and now they are out of smallville and he is no longer a boy. It too late to avoid an eventuality

Actually a lot of the big shot reporters didn't go to college, they just started off at the basement and worked their way up. That doesn't happen a lot nowadays but it is possible.
I would LOVE to see Tom and Erica in a Superman movie, especially Tom because to me he is the only person that can play Clark Kent since Chrisopher Reeves.

If there were no budget, then no way. I'm really not into watching action shows strictly for romance so as long as the budget was respectable and the writing was good, I'd watch. At this point, though, I think it's time to stick a fork in the "Smallville" version of the superman mythology. The writers have pretty much exhausted the material that they have and at times, they use the same material over and over again.

Seriously how can Clark be a reporter anyway? He has no College degree and zero experience. I hope they actually handle this mess next season.
He has expirience. He worked with Chloe on the Torch in highschool.

This day in age you actually can be a journalist without a degree, as good writing can easily be a natural ability, and Editors prefer to see writing rather than actual qualifications.
Sure, the show took some liberties with it as he started out straight away as a reporter at a well respected newspaper, but it's a show it can do these things :)

chill the **** out. i was not personally attacking you. So you don't like the main characters. Your perogative. However most people usually watch and stay for a show if they can at least somewhat like the main characters. After all, they have the most screen time. Hence the word 'main.' Can i ask what you do actually like about the show?

No, I think Smallville is enough. If I want a Superman show, I want to see new faces and if it's going to feature more action and mythology. Besides I'm not a fanatic of the Lois and Clark chemistry.
I wish they did a Superman show with Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder back then. I'm not a fan of Lois Lane from anywhere, but Christopher Reeve is my most favorite, and in my opinion the best, interpretation of Clark Kent, and Superman too.

Why not? Bring back Lex Luthor and Perry White. Introduce the "real" Jimmy Olsen, and bring in Cat Grant and Ron Troupe while you're at it. That would be my ideal Superman show, not that it would ever happen, but it's fun to think about.

Don't get me started on that one. That topic was discussed quite a bit last summer prior to the premiere when Clark magically got hired at the Daily Planet.
There is no logical reason why they could not have replaced the Smallville High set with a Met U or Central Kansas A&M set in season 5, like they started to in the beginning of season 5 and kept those kids in school until now.
They could have been unpaid journalism major interns at the Planet and had the same plots and sets from season 5 until now. They would have graduated from college at the end of last season and been hired full-time by the Planet.
But, no. Instead Al and Miles state at Comicon or somewhere that it would be too boring to watch the kids going to college (even though it worked at Smallville High), so instead they have Chloe get hired out of highschool and then fired; Lois work at a tabloid and then sleep with her editor; and Clark get hired by Tess, I can only assume, because he is hot and she wants to keep an eye on him like Lex did.

My wife and I were having this discussion the other day.
Now that Lois knows Clark, how on Earth is she not going to recognize him as Superman. OK, alien baby from another planet has superpowers -- I get there is some reasonable suspension of disbelief you have to have -- but really?
That's why the whole Lois being on Smallville and the Daily Planet make no sense.
Also, we actually think the Green Arrow story line is more interesting than Clark's at this point. Why not just call this show Green Arrow and get rid of Clark all together?
We have watched since episode one, and miss the old days. We will continue watching, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is no "next" season.

But I'm not sure how TW/ED would take this, I mean, Tom's been on this project for nearly a decade, and considering he rejected the role three times before he accepted it, I'm not sure he'd want to stay on...

Because for me, it would involve several factors. First, would the actors be willing to continue in their roles - rather, would they want to 'be' Lois and Clark for another 4-5 years? Second, would the writers/producers carry the continuity from SV throughout, or would they come up with something different?

I simply don't think it will happen so I'm not worried about it-odds are their agents are telling both of them to leave very soon and they probably will, so unless they do it next year I doubt it's even possible, not to mention their salaries have probably had to keep going up and ultimately CW won't be able to afford them. Not to mention I think Mike R as Lex would be a key ingredient for fans and he seems deadset on not coming back no matter how dead his career might be-I think he feels going back to the show would be like admitting defeat.

Lois has often been olde than Clark- (Lois & Clark, def in the Reeve Superman films) thats the point shes the more experienced journalist. In Smallville they even explain why she is older as she had to get more credit to get into college in S4.
Smallville has almost become a superman show, without saying it, with a touch of jla for good measure ;)
For the next 2 weeks we will be.
Sure! Why not? I love their chemistry and they play Lois and Clark so great! But that might be season 10 so look like we might be getting it after all! Now I don't mind Lois & Clark because it's a relationship that actually developed and can be taken more seriously.

paraphrase margot kidder, ed hit the ball out of the ballpark with her interpretation of lois lane. to me, she has made the lois lane character much more significant and interesting and i've been a superman show since the "adventures of superman" tv show with george reeves.
tw and ed have great chemistry. i'd love it if they could be the actors in the reboot of the superman franchise in the movies.

i think she is one of the better actors/actresses on the show. i was originally not to happy to hear that lois lane would be introduced into the show - how dare they mess with the superman mythos! - but ed won me over. i agree with you about the delay and waste in time, however, the longer the wait, the better the end:D

I find it funny that people are discussing what it would be like if they were part of a Superman type show. Aren't we already watching a Superman show with Tom and Erica for the most part? The show is set in Metropolis, Clark and Lois work together at the DP and are involved in a relationship, Clark has two identities - a mild mannered reporter and a costumed hero who haves people in Metropolis, and we get a ton of characters from the DC universe that aren't supposed to be introduced until after Clark becomes Superman.
If the show suddenly did become labeled an actual "Superman" show, how much would really change? Aside from the suit/Superman label, flight, and Perry at the DP, everything else would pretty much be exactly the same.
In all honesty, how can they even justify calling it Smallville anymore?

I would totally watch a new show with only Erica Durance and Tom Welling as the only cast members from Smallville! But I think TW wants to move on to producing his own show(s) and ED would probably want to do other varied roles.
It seems to me that ED has had the best (or rather, more varied) acting career outside Smallville, because she had a much lower episode count than the other main characters, and so had more time than the others to pursue other projects. Both Kristin Kreuk's and Michael Rosenbaum's careers seem to have tanked after leaving Smallville. I don't think Allison Mack's is going to fare much better.

no, i would like to see different actors with different writers/producers, im not a big fan of ED or TW i dont think there really good actors imho.
And you, are what we call, a tool. You must not appreciate or recognize when good acting is being done. Are they the best actors? No, they are no Jack Nicholson. But they certainly are good. A lot better than some of those clowns on the big networks. Their ability to change their entire demeanor, from the look in their eyes, to body language, etc when their character goes through an instant effect that changes their personality (Clark with the numerous kryptonite, Lois when she was Davis' mom, love potion, etc) is really good. All of the actors on the show are great at doing that. They bring a real emotion to the show as well. However, the writers, yeah, I completely agree. The writers are a complete joke. If SV had the writers that Supernatural does, man, this show would be soooo much better. It doesn't bother me personally, but I can understand why the numerous plot holes, that get added every episode, annoys people. A plot hole? Oh no big deal. We'll just truck right through it and on to the next one lol.

question then becomes, if you have SUPERMAN, LEX and bigger names such as wonder woman, everyone except Batman(assuming they still would not get around the Bat Embargo) would THE CW be able to contain them? if I was NBC executives I would be calling Peterson and Souders and developing the GROWN UP YEARS version on an GROWN UP channel

I would definitely watch for sure. However I feel that it would be a big jump for the current characters (Lois, Perry etc) not to recognize Tom Welling's Clark to be Superman. The only way they would be able to pull it off is if Lois learns his secret prior to the show starting.
I feel that a huge part of the early success of the "Lois and Clark" series was her not knowing CK was superman. Also, what would a Superman show be without a Jimmy Olsen???
That being said, I would still watch every week and buy the seasons.

Lois was younger than Clark in the Reeve Superman films. When she sees Clark racing the train, she is only a young girl, but Clark is in high school.

100% agree: if the production team stays together for a DC Universe themed series I would love to see it. if Tom and Erica would be "willing" to be Clark and Lois for 6-10 more years then by all means!
question then becomes, if you have SUPERMAN, LEX and bigger names such as wonder woman, everyone except Batman(assuming they still would not get around the Bat Embargo) would THE CW be able to contain them? if I was NBC executives I would be calling Peterson and Souders and developing the GROWN UP YEARS version on an GROWN UP channel
See ya CW execs have fun showing flintstones reruns for 0.001 ratings on fridays when Smallville leaves
+1000 especially the bolded part.

Sure would! Its a great choice to make with Smallville being so popular. Why not hold onto all the fans and make a spin off series. But sad thing is they may have to get someone new to play Lex, if they pursue that venture.

If it was based off the Clark and Lois as friendly rivals aspect yes. But Durance and Welling can't be believable as a couple inlove to save their lives. But their great in the brother/sister dynamic.
Wow I don't agree with this statement at all. There has always been an undercurrent of sexual frisson even in their early encounters.
They are extremely believable as a couple in love, in fact, I really think that out of all the pairings in T.V. land they are a) the most intensely charismatic and b) the most believable.
Selfishly I would love to see Tom on a HUGE screen, what a treat that would be.:p

Heck yes I would. The 90's Lois and Clark series looks way tooo cheesy for me to even bother watching.. And Tom and Erica's chemistry this year has been amazing. :D
Too bad, you're missing out. Especially since you're judging a show you haven't even watched and won't bother to because it "looks cheesy". Funny thing is, Tom and Erica take a lot from Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain.

What do you think. ?
after season 10 is all done. they should do a new show called Metropolis.
which will be actually the sequel to smallville.
hey they did it with that show Stargate SG-1

I'm a little worried that it won't feel as fresh anymore then, that they've already spoiled almost everything on Smallville.
And legally I don't know if they even can do it.
Isn't there some kind of law suit going on with Superman ? - And what about the movies ? - Will they allow a Tv-show of superman to run at the same time of a potential Superman movie ?
Oh so many questions

ITA I would rather see TW and ED on the Silver Screen with the reboot of Smallvile "Metropolis".. That would be an awesome reboot but Hollywood is retarded and it will never happen UNFORTUNATELY!!!

People have been talking about this since the end of season 6. It's never gonna happen. Just be grateful that the show has gone on 10 years and it's ending on it's own terms.

I'd say it would depend upon how S10 ratings will be if it's going to happen,
same thing with a potential spinoff tv show

I think some form of Smallville spin-off should (and maybe will) happen. I am doubtful that it will be a "Metropolis" Superman show, but maybe a Green Arrow spin-off or JSA or JLA spin-off.

I don't think they would have shown that hint about Lex Luthor running for president if they didn't at least think about a spinoff movie/tvshow about Lex becomming president.
Especially since they announce season 10 as the last season
Now there's a movie plot if they want to.

I mean, I would love that--a Lois & Clark style tv show with better special effects, but it's just not going to happen...especially not with a separate Superman movie coming out too.

There's right issues. WB doesn't want certain characters in the show if they're gonna be in a movie that's completely different. I believe early on, there were things the writers couldn't do with Lois because Lois Lane was going to be in Superman Returns.

No. I don't thinks so. As much as I love Smallville I think the show has run its course. Season 10 will be a perfect time for it to end.... unless they screw up the finale. Then I'd be hecka mad.... =/

I think the best chance we have is a spin-off movie to restart the superman franchise. I mean the cast works great together and fit the roles they are doing. No need for casting, just throw em in and do a movie.

If they were ever gonna to spin-off the show to Metropolis they would have done so in season 8 when the characters were officially spending more time their than Smallville.

Smallville is coming to an end and they really can't continue on. Technically when you look at it Tom Welling has been playing Clark Kent going on 10 years of his life. Judging by the look of his new show Hellcats, I think he wants to go in a new direction. As of now Tom Welling is pretty much the longest running Clark Kent/Superman in the character's entire history, granted it took 10 years to release all of the Christopher Reeve Superman films, but add that up and it still isn't nearly as many hours as Tom Welling has portrayed the role. One can argue that he has only portrayed Clark Kent for 10 years, but let's be honest, if he were to portray superman afterward he would still need to portray Clark Kent, and if a spin off could last as long as Smallville that is another 10 years as Clark Kent, which is too much for any one person to do. I think that is why Tom wants to do more work behind the cameras now. Whether you like it or not he has grown up and portraying the same character for 10 years is more than enough for any human being.

Not really. More time was still spent in Smallville still in season 5-7. Season 8 could have officially been called Metropolis since Clark and Chloe were officially operating there by that season, Clark and Lois were working there and all the main plot points were happening there with Smallville only showing when Clark was at the farm.

instead of a new TV show called Metropolis, I think the next Superman movie should be called "SUPERMAN BEGINS" - starring Tom Welling wearing the black "costume", of course.

Which makes sense for him to be wearing the black costume since you know he just got the iconic one from Martha in Salvation. If they ever did that (have Clark as Superman wear the black costume for a Superman begins movie) there isn't a chance in hell I'd see the movie.

I'm all for this!
Beats Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth any day of the week
Agreed. Kate's Lois was a little uninspired. Brandon's Clark, while good, was unoriginal. Too Christopher Reeve.
Erica's Lois is funny. And Tom's Clark is easy to relate to. Very human.

I'd watch it, but considering WB and CW is like not even in the top of the channel chain; it will be hard to pick up steam moving forward. Let alone get a production team started. Superman is more suited for the movies. Smallville is perfect the way it is. BUT if one of the big four channels brings out their money and persuade Warner Bros. Then we might see this project realized.
CW's budget will not be enough to do a Superman series justice. We will see though, it happened before. But again the television cultured has changed.
Here's to hoping that we will see a Superman Show!

Erica is WHAT? And Tom only enjoyable when working with good actors? He IS a good actor! I totally, absolutely, disagree with that. Why do you think they're bad actors? I mean, SERIOUSLY? They have chemistry, Erica has THE greatest faces, Tom makes Clark Kent awesome and they make this show the best EVER.
I totally think otherwise. They're awesome actors and I dunno how you can feel that way about them, honestly.
I would watch in a production like that, I think they're the best Clark Kent and Lois Lane ever... But our best shot is a movie... And it isn't, by far, a safe bet that it will happen...
