View Full Version : Season 3 Top Ten

Post your Top Ten episodes for the epic third season of Smallville here! Include as many details and reasons as you want (or don't, if you're a fan of the more brief lists). Let's see which ones you like best!

1 - Exile - I loved this season premiere!!! After Exodus (one of the better season finales) there were so many unanswered questions, and I wasn't disappointed in the way this premiere approached them. Seeing RedK!Clark at his worst, robbing ATMs in Metropolis and working for Morgan Edge, was fun. Watching Helen and Lionel trying to dodge each other's accusations and wondering who was really to blame was fun, too. Crazy!Lex on the island was also a hoot, especially when you realize that Louis Leery, Jr. was just a figment of his imagination -- and he killed him anyway! :p Plus, I was SO relieved that Chloe hadn't revealed anything major to Lionel about Clark, and that she had kept his whereabouts a secret. The music was great in this episode, too, and this is back when I still liked Lana.
2 - Covenant - A strong season finale, to be sure. There were many moments that blew me away, the most memorable being the closing sequence as Lionel was getting his head shaved -- didn't see that coming! You were left wondering how Lex, Chloe, and Jonathan were going to get out of their respective predicaments, and what Jor-El meant about Clark being "reborn." It also gave us a teaser as to what Kara would prove to be like, even though this wasn't the real Kara. It also marked the beginning of the end for the Clark/Lex friendship.
3 - Shattered - Maybe this should be a little higher on my list... At any rate, I don't know how anyone could NOT like Shattered. It features some of the best acting by Michael Rosenbaum, or by any actor on the series. It was heart-breaking to watch his downward spiral as Lionel manipulated his son and everyone around him into thinking he'd undergone a complete psychotic break. It felt similar to "Bride," too, in how it felt very much like a season finale even though it was only midseason.
4 - Delete - What do you expect from a Chloe fan? Sure, it featured half the cast trying to KILL Chloe, but the real fun was in seeing her avoid getting herself scythed, run over, or axed by Lana, and then figure out what was really going on. There was a nice nod to continuity with the inclusion of the Summerholt Neurological Institute and its insidious Dr. Garner. Plus, the Chlarky scene toward the end was one of the best.
5 - Legacy - How could you NOT enjoy a return appearance by Dr. Virgil Swann? And whew, he wasn't all too happy with Clark's progress, was he? I'm really sad that we didn't get to see him return a third time, especially considering the way they ended things, with him somehow in possession of the octagonal key after it had been sucked into the cave wall during the AWESOME Lionel/Jonathan fight.
6 - Perry - Here we got to see one of the Superman mythos' most enduring characters. Too bad Perry hasn't seen a return appearance since then, as I believe that Michael McKean's portrayal of him was spot-on, and his interactions with Clark were excellent. I'd love to see how he'd get along with Erica Durance's Lois.
7 - Hereafter - This was a really cool episode. I really liked the early "nice guy" FOTWs, and Jordan Cross was no exception. The kid was a good actor, meshed with Clark really well, and felt like he'd been part of the regular cast in how he fit in straight away. I wish he'd had a better return appearance than in his role in the Stride Gum comic on the Season 7 DVD set. Plus, we got to see a hint as to clark's amazing future through our glimpse of the cape. And that stunning ending regarding the mysterious Adam Knight... "I think he's already dead!" Dun, dun, DUN!!!
8 - Truth - Another Chloe episode showing her both at her worst and at her best. Turning Chloe into a temporary truth-seeking freak was fun to watch, even though it took her to unsavory lengths in trying to figure out Clark's secret. Still, I'm glad that it resulted in her uncovering the truth about Lionel's murder of his parents, and that she and Clark mended fences.
9 - Memoria - Another haunting, brilliant performance by Michael Rosenbaum. We got to see some of our first flashbacks into Lex Luthor's tragic history, including scenes with his mother Lillian, played by the talented Alisen Down.
10 - Extinction - This was a nice twist on the FOTW storyline, with a freak going after Lana (seriously, is her real meteor power attracting psychos?!), and getting gunned down by the vigilante Van McNulty!

There were so many excellent, exciting episodes in Season 3, which is why it's my personal favorite.

Y'know, after seeing other people's lists, I think I need to rewatch "Forsaken." My dad really loved it the first time he watched it, and I just... didn't for some reason. I think I need to see it again to give it a more objective opinion. Maybe I was just hoping for more Chloe goodness. :p

1. Exile - My favorite SV episode ever. Its like watching a mini-movie
2. Phoenix - Goes hand-in-hand with Exile
3. Perry - Great balance between humor and drama, Michael McKean was excellent, and Clark was wonderfully heroic, even with his powers on the fritz.
4. Covenant - My alltime favorite season finale. The montage at the end is a classic.
5. Truth - Great showcase for AM
6. Shattered - I don't love it as much as I used to, but MR hits this one right out of the park. I love the return of Morgan Edge. Great ending.
7. Extinction - Another episode where Clark is just super-heroic to me. And Van McNulty is a great bad guy with possibly the funniest name the show has ever come up with.
8. Whisper - Underrated and underappreciated
9. Obsession - Alicia! I loved that crazy chick.
10. Asylum - Poor Clark and Poor Lex.

1. Perry - fun light hearted episode with limited angst

2. Covenant - great Season ender

3. Extinction - good villian and Clark investigating episode

4. Shattered - good action packed episode

5. Obsession - fun FOTW episode, Alicia , fun watching Clark enjoy himself for a change even if it is for the first half of the episode

6. Asylum - great seeing 3 returning stars and good follow up to Shattered

7. Memoria - good episode exploring Lex and Clark's histories

8. Phoenix - I hated how Exile ruined Clark's character but Phoenix was actually entertaining if you ignore Clark running off and acting like an idiot the previous episode

9. Talisman - good episode exploring Kawatche legend

10. Truth - one of the decsent Chloe-centric episodes on the series

I have a top five for season three, but overall this is one of the seasons I rarely re-watch so I don't remember it very well.

I recently rewatched S3 and I have to say I think it's vastly overrated. It had some good episodes, but if you not a big Lex, Lionel or Chloe fan this is the Season Clark starts to take a backseat to other storylines(which gets progressively worse each season), plus the fact the storylines started to get a bit darker.

Of your list I personally don't care for Relic and Crisis wasn't that good either

Oh man this is hard! Season 3 ranks right up with Seasons 5 and 6 for me, and is pretty darn near flawless. I'll give this a go:

1. Memoria: My second favorite episode of the series.I just love this one so much. The final scene between Clark and Martha makes me cry. :)
2. Shattered
3. Exile
4. Relic
5. Extinction
6. Covenant
7. Truth
8. Crisis

I totally feel the same way, JB1986. I LOVE the entirety of Season 3. It was a little bit darker than the two previous seasons, while not being terribly gross or anything. I loved how so much of the plot focused on the Luthors, Lionel's deviousness, Lex's attempts to expose his father, which led him further down the dark path he'd started on, etc... And it still didn't take away from all the other excellent moments that other characters had, like the Chloe stuff in "Delete," "Whisper," and "Truth," the Adam Knight storyline, which I thought was pretty cool, and much, much more. Season 3 for me was Smallville at its best.

My favorite season of the show. Really good overall arc with Lex/Lionel/Morgan Edge/Chloe.

My Top 10 :

1) Shattered - My favorite episode of the series.

2) Exile - My favorite premiere.

3) Covenant - My favorite season finale.

4) Memoria - Amazing episode. Very well done overall.

5) Talisman - An extremely underrated episode. One of my favorites for the whole show. Great action/suspense/mythos. Also the dialogue is fantastic!

6) Perry - Outstanding episode. Michael McKeon did a great job as PW and I liked how the episode examined the sun's effects on Clark's powers.

7) Legacy - Really good follow-up to Rosetta. In fact, I almost like Legacy better. I just hate the ending. We still have never gotten an explanation as to how Swann got the key.

8) Relic - Great flashback episode. I really enjoyed how they revealed how and why Clark wound up with the Kents. I also loved the flying scene with "Joe" and Louise.

9) Hereafter - The cape scene is outstanding, and Jordan made for one of the best FOTW's.

10) Asylum - Good follow-up to Shattered. I liked the return of Ian and Eric, and the episode provided suspense overall. It still bugs me however, that Kryptonite has an effect on a human. Eric does not inherit Clark's genetic make-up or origins. He inherits the powers only. So why is it that an element that is only lethal to people from Krypton, would effect a human (powers or not)?

* Truth gets an honorable mention @ a very close # 11. Definitely one of the best Chloe centric episodes.

8) Relic - Great flashback episode. I really enjoyed how they revealed how and why Clark wound up with the Kents. I also loved the flying scene with "Joe" and Louise.

I wish the producers made the episode about Jor-El personally, not Jor-El and "Louise". It seemed to me this episode was the producers way to get Tom and Kristin to do and say everything they couldn't get Clark and Lana say and do because of the current storyline(s). The 2 minutes of Jor-El and the Kents at the end can't save the episode for me.

If done properly(ie exploring jor-El's time on Earth without any romantic storyline) I think this could have been one of the best epsiodes of the series but the fact it turned out to be nothing more then a Clana episode in disguise made it a huge failure. If there point was to show us how Clark and Lana was a tragic "epic" love for the ages, they might have been better off casting different actors to play the parts of "Jor-El" and "Loiuse". Jor-El and Louise looking exactly like Clark and Lana but in 50s clothing just came off corny.

Just look at the storyline as well. Louise is married to a guy(who is currently in jail and on his last breath) but cheats on him with Jor-El(way to go there homewrecker), the town police officer(who is currently the mayor) kills Louise because he is madly in love with her and frames her husband. At the end of the episode Lana and Clark solve the mystery of who killed "Louise" and the guy in jail seems more then forgiving of his skank of a wife(it would be just as bad as let's say your ex-wife trying to kill you and stealing 10M from you and you just let that go scot free because she is so purdy)

Like how ridiculous is that

Well I see the episode a bit differently than that, and I don't think I would have loved it as much if not for the romance.

1. Somehow, Joe and Louise is probably the best romance on the show for me. Kristen and Tom really seemed comfortable in those roles, and it was just such a sweet story. I don't see it in the cynical way you do. The reason that the husband forgave her in the end is because he knew, he always knew deep down she didn't love him. It was a different time back then and marriages weren't the same... sometimes it was forced or just convenient.

2. The shallow part of me has to love the half naked barn scene. Which I consider one of the hottest moments on smallville.

3. Best Welling Crying moment - was the first time he had properly cryed on the show, and I really felt he pulled it off well.

Anyway, the whole point of having a romantic thread through it, was to show Clark that his father was just like him. That he was on this earth, and fell in love with a Lanalike and that makes him more accessible to his son, who basically just thought he was evil.

If it was just an episode that followed Jor-el exploring earth, I don't think Clark would have gotten that same connection to his fathers human side.

p.s. here is my top 10

Asylum
Memoria
Exile
Shattered
Covenant
Phoenix
Relic

Legacy
Talisman

Special mention to Extinction, Truth, Slumber and Obsession which just missed the cut

I still stand by my opinion it was a cheap way to get Tom and Kristin to do an episode to please Clana shippers. And the main problem with good guy Jor-El is a few episodes later we get tyranical butthole Jor-El back, so it added absolutely nothing to Clark getting an understanding of Jor-El because the next time they cross paths it's like nothing has changed.

As I said if they really wanted to make it feel legit they should have got different actors to play the part of Jor-El and Louise(well at least Louise, I mean honestly what are the chances Lana aunt is part asian as well)

SGuthrie27

I kind of stand between the two extremes on the "Relic" issue. While I'll agree that part of TPTB's motivation in creating the episode was to say "Here's a Clana that you're not going to get to see for a good long while, so enjoy it!", it also provided us a chance to get a deeper understanding of who Jor-El was, and to give him a human side and show some emotion that was seriously lacking prior to this point.

By the way, Ryan, it is, indeed, pretty ridiculous how every person who's ever absorbed Clark's powers (not only Eric Summers but Parasite from "Injustice" and Lana in "Wrath" as well) inherit his weakness, too, without having his Kryptonian DNA. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they went that route, but I guess I get how it would be the expedient way of ending the conflict in each of the stories.

Yeah, you're definitely not alone in thinking that's weird. I mean, unless a person got injected with some of Clark's DNA, and that's even a stretch, they shouldn't be affected by Kryptonite at all, because it's Clark's alien body that causes the "allergic reaction" to happen, not just his powers.

--SGuthrie ><>' :)--

^^^ The way I see it is that if there's a problem with humans who have Clark's powers reacting to kryptonite in the same way, then surely the argument about DNA has to apply to both circumstances. The reason that Clark has his powers is down to his DNA responding differently under a yellow sun.

I know I am probably in the minority who thought Exile was crap. I particularly didn't care for it when it first aired, and hate it more and more as each season goes by and we see Clark continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. I particularly am not a fan of Smallville's take of Jor-el and this episode was the highpoint of tyranical butthole Jor-El causing nothing but unneeded problems in Clark's life.

I thought the whole Calling-Exile run was terrible writing, just making everything over dramatic for the sake of having "Drama". I am particularly not a fan of "I hate my life" Clark and those 3 episodes highlighted it more then any other during the run of the show.

If I was writing the show the Season 2 cliffhanger would be Clark tells Lana his secret(then do full blown Clana in S3 + 4 before they break up). Sure it may not been as dramatic as Calling-Exile, but I would put the to be continued right after he tells her the secret and the cliffhanger would be to see her response. I am pretty sure that would have just as equally kept people interested to see her response. I guess looking back at the show now, that couldn't have happened so early in the relationship because they had to figure out how to stretch the Clana relationship for as long as possible stalling it anyway they could because Lana is the most important person in the universe.

I kinda have a hard time making top 10 lists because sometimes I like another episode better and sometimes they switch places and gah. But I'll give it a try XD

1. Phoenix (I love this episode. It opens with the best fight, it has some sweet moments, some exciting moments, Lex buying the farm for the Kents, hugs all around, the ending)
2. Exile (Lovely scene in the phonebox, with the burning scar, the phonecall and gorgeous melody, badass red-K, and cliffy ending)
3. Legacy (As a JK-fan of course I love this ep, I like Jonathan's storyline in it, we get a different side of him, Clark trying to find out what the hell is going on, Lionel being smartass etc)
4. Hereafter (I like the character of Jordan, I liked the actor, the storyline and the quite shocking ending)
5. Perry (Funny episode, McKean is good, the tractor toss is classic, good chemistry between the characters)
6. Crisis (Cool episode, kinda bugs me that Lana leaves the bloody shotgun, but oh well. I like it, I like the scenes at the farm, good acting)
7. Truth (Cool Chloe episode, good acting again, interesting storyline)
8. Covenant (Lindsay kinda rubs me the wrong way, but the ep is good, the ending is real cool, maybe a little too many "possible deaths" for a finale with Chloe, her daddy, Jonathan, Lex, but oh well)
9. Extinction (cool badguy of the week, Pa the hero, kryptonie bullet funky idea)
10. Relic (I'm not a huge fan of shows that do flashbacks with the original cast as other identical completely other persons and it doesn't fully work here either, but it doesn't suck and SV has done it way better then other shows. It's a little cute and pretty too so not the worse episode of the season either obviously)

1. Shattered - Featured some of Michael Rosenbaum's greatest acting.
2. Asylum - A great followup to Shattered. Very Clexy as well. ;)
3. Exile - Sexy RedK Clark! And Lex on a deserted island! I liked the Morgan Edge storyline as well.
4. Pheonix - A great conclusion to Exile.
5. Memoria - We see some of Lex's and a little bit of Clark's memories.
6. Legacy - Cool episode with the return of Dr. Virgil Swann.
7. Perry - Very fun episode with Perry White being introduced for the first time.
8. Hereafter - Pretty cool episode. I liked the nod to Clark's future as Superman. And Jordan was a cool character.
9. Covenant - It was kind of an underwhelming episode to me, but what makes it cool is the last five or so minutes. The montage of Lionel shaving his head, Chloe and her dad's house getting blown up while they were inside, and Lex getting poisoned was pretty awesome; especially with the opera music playing in the background. Plus, the mystery surrounding Clark and what was going to happen to him was interesting.
10. Talisman - Cool episode exploring the Kawatche legend.

Hey there, friends! Seeing as I started the majority of these threads, I thought it might be fun to share with you the scores for each episode, as they've been tabulated thus far. For now, I'm just going with the raw score (number of times it appears in people's top ten) for each episode, and ranking them from highest to lowest. I'll be interested to hear whether or not you think this accurately reflects the best this season has to offer, and if the top ten shown here really are the top ten episodes of this season. :)

I agree -- this was one of the hardest seasons to narrow down for me, since there were so many high-caliber episodes!

Ha-ha, we have had many conversations on that very subject, haven't we, Sups? :D I know that, for you, it was the beginning of a lot of drama, and I can understand that viewpoint, but I really liked the plotlines that centered around the Luthors, and Clark's involvement in trying to help Lex, especially with everything that led up to "Shattered." The middle arc with Adam was cool, too, IMO. The last arc was actually not too bad, either, especially with "Legacy," "Truth," "Memoria," and "Covenant."
