View Full Version : Was the finale rushed?

I think it was rushed.
The fight was ant-climactic and the ending with Chloe was poorly done. Jimmy dying was interesting and Zod at the end was good but overall a C-. Worst finale so far.

Mad they didn't have rokk come in save chloe when davis try kill her. Tired of how they have clark keep on walking away.

It was a good episode, but yes VERY rushed. This is the perfect example of why some stories need to be told over mutliple episodes.

useuly in a finale i feel ok this story is done and we hae a couple of cliff hangers. But you always feel satisfied. But now with Clark not being clark that was too much.

Rushed or crammed, they tried to do too much with one episode.

Good points. With most finales on Smallville you feel satisfied at the end. With this one, that feeling wasn't there because it was rushed.

Rushed, felt weird, though in a way it was a good type of cliffhanger that was different from the mega disaster events that tend to close out Smallville seasons.
But the fight we've been waiting for all season long was rushed, rushed, rushed. I know that character development is necessary, but this should have been a two part episode with more action between Clark and Doomsday. A lot more.
If this is the true end of Doomsday they've let people down. I'm not a comic fan per say, but I know enough to know what Doomsday is and something they did a great job with, in fact one of the few things I've liked this season, got an awful ending. I guess Sam will be back as Zod but still... no excuse.
As for Clark walking away. If that leads to Clark returning and realizing it's his HUMANITY that seperates him from being a powerful alien that can bash people's skulls in then that's good. But the writers have seemed intent, going as far back as John Jones' little spats with Clark in Season 6 to trying to make the point that Clark's human side is bad. Which I don't agree with, and hope isn't their ultimate goal.
I always thought Superman was who he was because he had a human side, despite being an alien. He was just, yet kind because of his upbringing and the fact he cared about people when people like Lex and Doomsday didn't. Guess I'm wrong.... guess Supes is just a big powerful alien who does what he does because it's right and no emotions doing so.
Finale had its moments but Season 8 just hasn't connected for me. I loved Doomsday and Davis, Cassidy was wonderful as Tess, and I liked Jimmy's progression. But otherwise, save moments here and there, I just don't know if I want to stick around for two more seasons of this.
Gough and Millar weren't perfect, but even in their Lana obsession they still churned out some classics and were on the team responsible for the show at the time. Season 8 has had some good episodes but nothing iconic like Memoria, Descent or the Shattered episodes. Doomsday could have been one of those, but it was rushed and just didn't do much for me.
Oh and why were Jimmy's parents suddenly all cozy? I thought that was a "abusive" or bad situation? I might be wrong, but something seemed off.

I can't say that this episode was rushed because TPTB didn't have much to offer. I guess I can say that the Clark/Doomsday fight was rushed, but other than that, this episode was a complete bore in the final scenes.

Maybe rushed is not the word I'd use. I'd say...it was more disappointing than anything. I guess it'll somehow make sense to pull a quick fix to the mythos (killing the fake Jimmy lol), but I'm still not satisfied at all with this finale.
I actually didn't feel that it was as rushed as some of the others have been.I do have to say the fight was way short and that disappointed me greatly.

Total crud- I am so disappointed- I wanted an all out WWE or MMA smackdown with Clark and Doomsday and all we get are 3 seconds- the same three from the directors cut? WTF?
Sorry need to breathe- and after all that Jimmy bites the dust-(even though my bet was on him anyway) - wow all season long I sympathized with Chloe now I feel so numb!
I was even a die hard Chlavis fan- I really believed he was worth saving too- totally sucked- anticlimactic-deaths made no sense-Too little action -
The best lines- IMO- go to Oliver

I personally didn't find it rushed. I actually found that it clicked along at a better pace than majority of the other season finales. I've always thought that Smallville crammed in too much into one episode in the finales, but this time it felt right to me. I don't know, maybe I'm just in a weird mood tonight.

I was expecting an epic fight between Doomsday and Clark, but it didn't occur and it was depressing that it didn't happen. Once I got past the part where there wasn't going to be an epic battle I enjoyed the ultra rushed (should have used the last episode for exposition instead of using the first half of this one for it) finale. Also before destroying this finale, Arctic was worse imo

For me and the whole fight scene... come on guys you have been watching this series for 8 seasons and we never get a big and long fight scene so honestly i wasnt expecting anything to crazy
for me i think it was not rushed.. if this was the final episode of the smallville series i would be devastated right now but we have another full season and we have lots that can occur

05-14-2009, 09:15 PM
Very much rushed. No Doomsday fight or anything. What should've been done was a huge fight between Clark and Doomsday. They should've done a lot of things differently, probably should've saved the Jimmy/Chloe/Davis crap for next season or something, putting Doomsday into the geothermal plant could've been the cliffhanger after like a 3 segment fight.

05-14-2009, 09:57 PM
I think the only reason why it was rushed was because the writers were treating this as the series finale. When they realized that there could potentially be two more seasons they had to rewrite the finale. Think about how the last season ended. The finale was actually when lex killed lionel episode. When the writers strike was resolved they had to scramble to finish up the full 22 episode so the last few episodes was a little cheesy.

I liked Stiletto and Injustice but those 2 shows should have aired earlier in the season. The last three episodes should have been all Doomsday/Clark story and then they wouldn't have to rush everything in the finale.

TPTB spent a whole season talking about Doomsday and how Clark has to stop it.. and the fight b/t the 2 lasted less than 2 mins.. i mean did Clark even get a punch in.. i wish they had a fight like they do in the Doomsday Movie.. or at least in the graphic novels.. i know it wasnt superman that battled him but still...
just wish it would of been a longer fight

Definitely rushed. Consider the lack of development we got in Beast and Injustice they might have used their noggins and spread the finale out a bit more. There's were plenty of things they could have had happen in those episodes to save room in Doomsday.

I didn't have a huge problem with this episode, but I do think there were scenes that went by too fast.
I think maybe the problem was that originally this was written to be a series finale and then when they did the re-write for a season finale instead, they did some things in a rush. I don't know that for a fact, I'm just guessing.
The Bliss talk was longer than the Doomsday fight.
I love Bliss, but I wanted a kewl fight too.
So I think that suffered the most.

This season had a pretty good head of steam going for it until we got the umpteenth round of Clana shoved down our throat. It was downhill from there with no hope of recovery. The writers apparently didn't just wish to derail this train but run it off a precipice as well--they succeeded.
Undoubtedly the worst finale ever. Horribly rushed with gaping holes in the storyline. I don't even see them rescuing this one with some deleted scenes on the DVD. Season 7 was mediocre at best but this season takes the cake.
They need to get Loeb back on this series and some other quality comic writers like Starlin that are familiar with the Superman mythos and know the meaning of continuity and quality scriptwriting.

The ending was completely rushed and a waste of a series. Rushed isn't the word I would have used. Ruined. The writers completely ruined the series and what they had built up. The ending wasn't a shocker, it was a disappointment.

I had very high expectations after the trailer and i was let down. Come on, 4 minutes of Lois! The WHOLE fight released as a directors cut! But i think we had to many spoilers before anyway. Come one, 2 deaths in one scene! That is freakin' rushed! Doomsday should of killed Davis. Then Jimmy wouldn't of died.
And we have like no info at all about the orb.
How did Tess get it, if she found it with the Crystal why did it take so long for something to happen?
Really should of explained it more. They just crammed everything. There isn't a real cliffhanger of Season 8, if you get what i mean.
Almost everything for season 8 was tied up in Doomsday, but now in the finale, they bring Zod/someone, Clark walking away from Humanit, this is all Season 9 stuff! Not season 8!

I think it could have been extended to 90 mins and showed more. I was totally disappointed in this finale. With all the spoilers and interviews I read, I was so excited to watch it. I was waiting for that "quintessential Lois/Clark moment" the writers talked about. I was waiting for Clark to fight Doomsday and all he did was get beaten down in about 3 mins. I was completely shocked at the Jimmy death. I kept waiting for Chloe's tears or her hand to heal him. Davis I expected to die, but not by Jimmy's hands. I'm not sure I'm thrilled with this "twist" they talked about. Little Jimmy seems a little too young to catch up with Smallville. I would have believed it if he was maybe 12-14 years old. I was upset that Erica had only 3 scenes in the whole finale. She was gone by the halfway point. 12 episodes for her? Try 11 1/2. I kept hoping they'd at least tease us as to where she ended up. At least give us a shot of her face saying "oh my god" or "holy crap" or something. There's so much more I could go into, but frankly I'm so tired and just in shock mode still. I was completely let down. The only way I could be somewhat happy about season 8 is if they put some kick butt commentary from the stars on the DVD and compile all the best bloopers from the past 5 seasons since they haven't done it since the 3rd season DVD. The bloopers alone would help me forgot a little bit of the crap that happened this season. Not all of it, not some of it, but just a teeny tiny bit. September can't get here any sooner.

I think it was very rushed, and utter crap. It's really got me thinking, if the finale was this poor, I don't exactly have a lot of excitement for season 9. I mean what's the point of a 9th season at all if the writers and producers are just going to half-ass it the rest of the way? This show was great once, but that ship has long since sailed, the only reason its still going at this point is because the CW has jack squat to replace it with. I don't mean to be negative, but I'm just calling it like I see it.

It was.
Like I read on another forum, they must have had to change the last few episodes since Smallville was renewed for Season 9.
But weren't the producers quoted as saying they had an arc for either scenario? Either a series or season finale?
I would expect 2 separate story lines to be fleshed out that would branch-off around episode 16 or 17, so that it wouldn't matter how late they were told about the renewal, they'd still have prep time and scripts in place. Doesn't seem like this happened after all.

Rushed is the understatement. It doesn't even look like the first draft of a movie. More like a sketchy lists of ideas to use for an episode.

Well, I always wondered what people meant by rushed. I have seen it used a lot but couldn't quite figure out what they meant. Guess I'm a little slow. Every finale I have seen in SV has a lot of scenes to try to wrap up the season while still leaving us with questions. They have 42 minutes to do this. Personally, I think they did a great job with the time they have to work with. Action, intrigue, drama set to a sci-fi theme with special effects. I'm amazed sometimes just how they pull this off on a TV series with a low budget. I don't know about rushed. Giving us a lot in a short time, yes. Doing a great job to accomplish this, yes. To me the only rushing with Smallville is me wishing the time would go by faster so I can see the new episode of the new season. I am also anxiously waiting for the new release of S8. Well, time will slowly tick by but it will be worth the wait:)

06-08-2009, 07:19 PM
Yes, it was rushed. I wish the networks would decide if a show was going to have another season earlier...it would stop this from happening...you can't rush Clark becoming Superman...it's a journey, not one single episode you have to do it in because the series is ending...or change things up all of the sudden because now there is an entire new season ahead...
i do have to say one thing...the writers and producers take a lot of criticism for some of the story arcs (I'm not saying some of it is not justified lol), but we also have to consider what they go through...if you are writing an arc for Superman and then all of the sudden with a few episodes left, you find out the show is having another year...i'm sure it's not all that easy for them to do a 180 in the arc either...so as much criticism as they take, i think they also deserve some credit for having to go through this and keep the show in tact...
