Was Beast the best 20th episode of the series? Here are your other options;

Season 1 – Obscura
Lana is blown away by a gas explosion whilst randomly wandering in a field with Whitney. She develops the power of clairvoyance from the joyous meteor rock fragments that were round her and sees Chloe getting kidnapped, as though she was the attacker. Clark relies on Lana’s visions to find Chloe before its too late. Meanwhile, Lex is visited by Roger Nixon and Clark contemplates asking Chloe to the formal.

Season 2 – Witness
Clark witnesses a Luthorcorp van being stolen and launches his own investigation to discover that the robbers are using Kryptonite inhalers to give themselves super strength. Meanwhile, Clark quits the Torch after an argument with Chloe. Lionel pops back up and gives Chloe a tempting offer.

Season 3 – Talisman
Professor Willowbrook brings his assistant Jeremiah to the Kawatche caves with him to see what Lionel is doing to them. Jeremiah takes a relic out of Lionel’s hands which transforms into a knife, giving him the same powers as Clark. Prof. Willowbrook insists that Clark is still Naman and that the knife belongs to him, though it will be destroyed by his greatest enemy. Jeremiah thinks Lionel is the enemy, but is he right? Also, Lana decides to move to Paris and Pete tells Chloe his parents are divorcing.

Season 4 – Ageless
Lana and Clark find a baby randomly out in the middle of the field and take him home. Turns out he was abandoned and has the ability to age fast over a small space of time. Lionel meets with Genevieve Teague who threatens to kill Lex unless he gives her the stone.

Season 5 – Fade
Clark saves Graham Garrett from being hit by a car outside the Metropolis courthouse. Graham insists on paying Clark back, with the promise of getting him back together with Lana. Clark gets angry with Chloe for her not telling him about Lex and Lana and struggles as to whether to let Graham kill Lex. Oh and he randomly sees Lois naked.

Season 6 – Noir
After a secret meeting with Lionel, Lana gets shot at the Daily Planet. Jimmy gets a whack on the head and wakes up in an AU universe in black and white, where; Chloe is in charge of some part of the |Daily Planet, Clark is a bumbling reporter with glasses by day and a crime saver by night, Lana is a femme fatal, Lois is a club singer and Lex is… well Lex. Who is having an affair with Lois. All this leads Jimmy to start to piece together how Lana got shot. In the real world Lana reveals the real reason why she married Lex to Chloe.

Season 7 – Artic
The seventh season finale, which sees Clark believing that Kara is under the
Influence of Red K, though it isn’t Kara. She gives Lex coordinates to the fortress and is revealed as being Brainiac by Chloe, who then gets infected but not before attempting to heal herself from his attack. Lana wakes up… and leaves. Lois gives Clark a Daily Planet application. Lex goes to the Fortress ready to ‘save mankind’ from Clark.

Season 8 - Beast
Chloes, Beauty and the Beast scenario takes a turn, with her deciding to flee Smallville with Davis. To protect Clark?

Cn a mod close this thread till after the episode airs please? :)

Thanks Jade. Beast should win out of this bunch but i am not too optimistic with Clark directing Injustice.

I am going to take a wild guess Ageless won't win this one. Noir another of my worst 10 episodes ever list and looking at the description I forgot how bad Witness was.

Talisman is a pointless episode now since we all know Davis is Sageeth so the whole knife thing had no point. lol

Of course Artic has a chance of winning as it was a season finale, though certainly not the best one of course.

Two things...

1. I would actually hold Arctic out of these polls until the season finale. In my opinion I would caompare it with other season finales, rather than its actual episode slot.

2. Beast. Period.

Supsfan

Probably Artic, but I figure it better to compare that to other Season finals, so I went with my second choice Fade(sort of the best of the bunch not actually that wonderful an episode)

Beast just didn't do it for me, seemed like a plot I would expect from Lana

On the whole, the twentieth episode has been terrible.
Talisman wins, and I don't think we should count Doomsday as Sageeth. It's still Lex, Tess is just wrong.

Keep Arctic on, and then put it on for the finale as well. Besides it was a sh**y episode anyway...

1. Talisman
2. Beast
3. Fade
4. Witness
5. Obscura
6. Arctic
7. Noir
8. Ageless

Man, 7 and 8 are two of the worst to date...

lol I guess usually people will pick what is the freshest in there head at the moment, so episodes that are 2-3 years old have a bigger advantage over older episodes. I probably should have picked Talisman(terrible Eternal retcon not withstanding) but Fade was more recent in my head(which was a decent enough episode)

Is it just me or all 20th episodes are really mediocre?

Talisman wasn't bad (wounded Clark is always attractive) and Beast was very dramatic, though I don't think I'll see it more than once. I'd be surprised if Clark has more than 15 minutes of screentime in this episode. I liked Oliver in this episode, though I think there's something wrong with him.

I hate the retcon of Talisman and the Kawatchee caves... so to me its like Eternal never happened and pretty soon I hope to forget about Beast too. The worst episodes of the season for me have been Chlavis centered.... I hope neither of them come back next season.

I went with "Obscura" for the pure Chlarky goodness. Clark asking Chloe to the Spring Formal and the reactions by both of them? PRICELESS.

"Witness" was not a terribly good episode. Lots of fighting between the characters made it rather uncomfortable, and the kryptonite-inhaling Freaks of the Week were not all that inspired.

"Talisman" was pretty cool, especially because of the return of Dr. Willowbrook (was that his name? I can't remember...), and the continued mythology of Naman/Sageeth.

"Ageless?" Indeed, it should be categorized as an ageless example of the worst Smallville has to offer, LOL.

"Fade" wasn't terribly great to me, either. Not horrible, but not that memorable either.

"Noir" was a little cheesy, but kind of cool. It had nice elements, and Jimmy really did deserve the chance to have an episode devoted to him.

"Arctic" probably gets second place in my mind. It had some very cool moments, and of course, some of the most important scenes of the season, including the final showdown between Clark and Lex in the Fortress, and Lana's departure.

I have such a love/hate relationship with "Beast." I loved the performances it brought out of several of the main actors, I liked that they're finally moving Jimmy in a positive direction, and I enjoyed the last Chlark scene immensely, but there were a lot of other plot elements and characterization pieces that bothered me quite a bit. So, I can only give this episode third or fourth place billing.

My take:

1. Arctic (yet another great season finale)
2. Beast
3. Noir (very underrated episode IMO)
4. Obscura (some of the best Clark/Chole scenes of the series!)
5. Witness
6. Talisman
7. Ageless (its an OK episode)
8. Fade (one of the weakest episodes of the series IMO)

I understand that Arctic is not one of the better season finales, but I have chosen it because contains the last comparison between clark and lex, that is the first where they really know each other.

Davis Bloome
05-01-2009, 10:14 AM
Call me biased but this was better than Arctic. I mean Arctic was flawed (and Beast also contains a few) and it's still a powerful episode, but it's the episode where we lose Lex in. And that was a big loss which is partially why I like and don't like it, cause Lex was a great villain.

Wow, notice how often the word "random" comes up in those descriptions?? Episode 20 must mean "filler week" in Vancouver. I rated Talisman as the best. Beast and Arctic are the other two non-fillers, so I put them as second and third. Among the remaining, all filler episodes, I think Noir and Obscura were far better than the other 3.

You're right, this isn't exactly a collection of Smallville's finest moments. This time last year, I'd have definitely gone with Talisman, but now that episode's denouement has been rendered completely meaningless.

What's the difference between Noir and Relic Jade? Relic was not close to the end of the season and expectations weren't as high. When i saw Noir, it felt like a waste of time because we were so close to Phantom. But now i always enjoy it. Jeannot has done a fantastic job with the directing. The only thing i never figured out is who shot Lana and on who's orders. Did you? I agree about Ageless! That person has the biggest heart in the world! He didn't want Ageless to get 0%!

I've watched just the black and white middle section of Noir, and it's actually a pretty good little 20 minute film noir, with all of the earmarks of the genre. And Erica Durance sings quite well. A lot of people don't like the episode because it was a filler episode, but it stands up well on its own.

BEST to WORST: (Or the lesser of all crap episodes in the case of this group...I never realized that the 20th episode of the season(s) have been by far the worst group I've seen since I started reviewing the "best episode" weekly thread)

1) Season 3 – Talisman

2) Season 2 – Witness

3) Season 6 – Noir

4) Season 7 – Artic

5) Season 1 – Obscura

6) Season 8 - Beast

7) Season 4 – Ageless

8) Season 5 – Fade

On a side note, and I'm sure I'll be labeled a Chlark hater for this (not the 1st time and I'm sure it won't be the last) but looking back all the 20th episodes...anyone else realize that Chloe has been a major pain in CK's @ss in one way or another almost every season! Episode 20's are not Ms. Sullivan's strong suit...

Way I look at Noir is it was 20 minutes of useless filler, 20 minutes of a very average storyline. Whenever I see the B&W stuff I just imagine the producers patting themselves on the back thinking how wonderful and inventive they are, much like alot of other crap on this show.

Right, which says to me it should be an average episode, not one of the worst. I remember so much of the horrible episodes I've seen once and the ones that I love. With the average ones I just remember the basic plot. I thought Fade was a slightly better than average episode.

Well, for once, I think they deserved the pat on the back for the B & W cinematography only. It was exactly like a film noir from the 40s. I agree the episode was the most useless filler of them all; but I enjoyed watching the cast in a 40's like movie. I never really understood the story and I never tried to. I just enjoyed the pretty. :o

It was basically 20 minutes of episode to show us the smoking case from Lana's purse that Lois picked up was a clue. They could have cut the time down for that dramatically by having Lois tell Chloe, hey look what I found.

Obscura: good episode, but it was a filler, but most episodes in the first season kinda were fillers as it was just about kryptonite freaks mostly. Still good for what it was

Witness: Was also good, but not that good. The action was good and the scene where they threw Clark in flames was cool.

Talisman: VERY good, I liked every episode concerning the Namaan legend. And this one is probably my second favourite next to the Skinwalker. I really liked the romance between Clark and Kyla in that one.

Ageless: Not that good imo. It was a little too weird even for smallville.

Fade: Seeings Lois naked was probably the best about it, other than that, it was good, but again nothing special lol.

Noir: Really cool idea, but as I'm not such a fan of Jimmy it sometimes became annoying as him as this detective wannabe, though Clark was very cool in it as this cop. That was probably its best point.

Artic: As a season finale it was of course very good, though it surely wasn't one of the best finale's of Smallville imo.

Beast: Yeah of course I thought this topped them all. Only Talisman comes actually close I think. It brought Smallville to a darker place that we've never seen before and I liked that. It had a lot of twists and things you wouldn't expect from Chloe and even Davis surprised me in the basement scene with Oliver and Jimmy. This was a scene where I even liked Jimmy in, which is rare lol.

Hard to say alot of the season 1 episodes were filler. While the main plots usually were fillerish(FOTW), they usually did the bulk of there storytelling in the final 10 minutes of the episode(i refer to them as ending scenes). Every episode we would get Clark and Character X having a scene together moving there relationship forward.

Wow. I finally get to vote for Ageless! LoL... actually, this is a difficult decision. I love "Ageless," but I also really enjoyed "Noir." "Beast" was a very good episode, and "Arctic" was the last time we saw Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor... Maybe these episodes aren't as epic as say, "Rosetta," or as outstanding as "Transference," but they all seem to have something special about them for me - especially the ones I named in my post.

Honestly I couldn't choose any of those episodes, they're all bad.
