View Full Version : Smallville Writers, stop using the word "Super" all the time..
Superman of Krypton

I know most of Smallville's dialogue is incredibly weak at times, but seriously "super save" ??
That's just one example, but they overuse the word Super in the most random contexts all the time.
It's getting mind-numbingly bad..
Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

But if tptb don't use the word "super" all the time, then how would we know that Clark becomes...you know, Superman. They have to foreshadow it somehow, right? ;)
(Oh, wait, should I use spoiler tags for this?)

They do throw it around a lot.
It's like Kryptonite. It can be used for anything and everything and the stuff in between.

I don't mind it much either...in fact, I haven't noticed it being used that much. Maybe I'm just oblivious.

for me it isn't so much one particular word...they just seem to be throwing the verbal "anvils" out a lot more this season...it's just wee bit over the top IMO.
Whaa? But using the word "super" is like super cool! :p

They haven't. I actually have a list...um...somewhere that I compiled by watching seasons 1-5 two months ago to search out Superman anvils and they were strongest in season one (about flying, about putting on a "suit," about primary colors, about double identity, about a destiny greater than this or that, yadda, yadda, yadda). The anvils were everywhere. Season two they were still heavy, but season three was a bit lighter. Then came season 4 and they were back in season 1 terrain with Clois anvils matching the Superman anvils. So anvils have always been there. They probably only seem heavier now because these are the episodes that we have fresh in our minds...

Well instead of "super", they could use synonyms like great, magnificent, superb or terrific. However, none of them have the same ring as "super" cause well, he does become "super"man after all. I don't mind cause if they use the word super once every couple thousand words. Its not as bad as you think. Maybe you just hate the word :P :)

AT least in this episode no one said 'The important thing is ..." line that was repeated in almost every episode of the first half of the season.

It does come off as a bit contrived at times.
It seems more likely that she would have said "that incredible/amazing/awesome save!" for example. Super is actually not that popular a word. Although, if you want to see some really gratuitous overuse of the word super, check out some of the silver age comics. Yowza.

I think it's all in how they're used. In the early seasons the foreshadowing was naturally flowing and subtle enough that if you didn't know what they were getting at you would miss it altogether (I'm always running into things I've missed while watching old epsiodes). I always thought the foreshadowing in the early seasons was really clever and I enjoyed it greatly. The stuff lately is different in that it really feels forced in and overly obvious. When they shove full names into dialogue where nobody familiar with the English language would ever use a full name, it always yanks me out of the story and makes me snarl at my TV. Similarly, the constant "I can't imagine what it would be like if Clark could fly!" type things make me go "All right already! We know he's Superman! Go away!" It's not that there are more of them, it's that they aren't nearly as clever or fun as they used to be.

I love the word Super being used.
I like it too, sounds so familiar to me:DI remember when Clark said it to Chloe when he had lost his powers and was in danger (you know, the epi when he has his first time with Lana at the end, sorry I don't know the title in english), I was totally : AHHHHHH. I know I know...but there are words like this in Tom's mouth, it is just sooooo cute

I guess they need to drill the word Super into Lois's head..........since she needs to give the RBB a new name.

It really never bothered me that much. I do admit that they do tend to overuse at times though. Lol at the saying it for Lois' sake too!
