View Full Version : The garbage bags

I noticed that the colors of the garbage bags Chloe took out that had that guy's body in it were red & blue. This can't be coincidental. It's probably foreshadowing that the RBB/Clark will have a similar fate (though he'll hopefully be in 1 piece).

I have to admit, I didn't notice the colour of the bags at first, I was too busy gagging at the thought of Chloe disposing of body parts.

I was thinking that Chloe has some pretty strong arms because she was carrying those bags pretty easily . She even heaved it up and into the garbage.
She has been working out

red bags, really? and what do they recycle?and where do you find red garbage bags? The writers really didn't have to do the red and blue on that one.and she knew what was inside but didn't wear gloves? really gross, gag yuck, diseases!

Personally I think you have pushed the 'reading into things' a tad too far there.
Its nice to see you are paying attention though:D

I dunno... I thought that was pretty sharp of you, xray. I actually didn't notice that those were the two particular colors used, but I DO remember thinking later that it was odd that Chloe had two different colored (and BRIGHTLY colored) garbage bags. That WAS a seriously gross scene. And wouldn't you think she'd dump them some place OTHER than in the dumpster behind the place where she and the monster live?

Does anyone have any screencaps? I'm curious to see how obvious it is before I make a decision on if it has a deeper meaning or not.

Okay, I went back and watched the scene and it's so glaringly obvious, it can't possibly be coincidental (how on earth did I not notice that the first time round). They did that on purpose imo.

I think you're right amalie. I think it's primary interpretation is that Chloe is throwing out her friendship with Clark. I also think it means that Clark will be having a similar fate to what AJ (or whatever the name of that guy who was played by the same guy as Lowell in Progeny was).
By the way, no problem BBBB.
Also, I have seen red garbage bags and blue ones too. I don't remember where but I definitely saw them somewhere before Stiletto.

Throwing away the friendship. Huh--that's pretty good. But EEEEEEEWWWW!!!!
I suppose the visual metaphor could have been worse though. Chloe could have tried dumping buckets of...stuff into a blue toilet while using a red plunger to flush it all away. Heh.
Oh Chloe, what have they done to you?

Those noises reminded me of the squishy noises heard in Static when that doctor was throwing those bags of de-spined corpses in Seattle.

It was obviously meant to symbolize something, other then being really gross that had to be the point of this scene. Red and Blue garbage bags... if it had just been one or the other you could say it was meaningless but two bags, one in each color, that's pretty heavy handed. I was kinda wondering why she had two different colored trash bags when I first watched but I think I was too grossed out by the squish squish, emo Chloe face, squish squish to really draw it in...

They like using that sound effect. It's the same one heard in Static when those bags of de-spined corpses were being analyzed by the doctor Clark met in Seattle.

Whoa. 'Friendship with Clark being thrown away'.
That's something to think about. Yet another depressing thought piled on the 'WTH are you doing, Chloe!' train.

I didn't notice this but they're overdoing it with the red/blue symbolism. It's not as effective if it's all over the place.
Not sure about the scene symbolizing Clark's death but the "friendship with Clark being thrown in the garbage" is interesting.

Not only were the two garbage bags Chloe had red and blue, but put that scene/usage of red and blue up against Lois' note from the RBB, which was on red and blue paper. To me, the symbolism = Chloe-- a tossing away...a betrayal if you will; Lois--loyalty and trust.

Hopefully a secondary interpretation is that the RBB will permanently bite the dust and Superman will finally emerge. It will probably happen in my dreams of course but a fan can hope. :)

Hey, no problem! ;)
I'm a visual person, so I love seeing caps in the threads. It helps bring about more discussion, I think. :D
Anywho, I never knew garbage bags came in blue and red!:lol::p
If I were Chloe, I would have opted for the more traditional black. The primary colors just make the evidence stand out more. And, for goodness sakes, why choose the dumpster at the back of the Talon? Hel-lo! The Feds will be swarming the place within days. Oh, but, this is Smallville where the "weird and unexplained" stay weird and unexplained, huh? :p

I didnt notice the colors while watching but it could possibly be foreshadowing, I mean why would they pick different colored garabge bags and then go through the trouble of making them red and blue if it didnt mean anything....unless it was purely a coincidence??
Also, the scene was creepy, liked the way Chloe cried after that with a "seriously WTF am I doing" look on her face.

Maybe she was scared of getting caught since the longer from the Talon she dumped the bags, the higher the chances of her getting caught by a cop or someone walking around.

Maybe, but there's more chance of them linking those crimes to her (given that the bodies are behind the talon with her fingerprints all over the bags no less) than there is of the police stopping her. Whatever her reasons it was a horrible scene to watch.

04-26-2009, 04:28 AM
I know. But it was supposed to be horrible. Also, don't forget Chloe had no car since it was stolen, and I'm sure those bags weighed quite a bit (close to 200 pounds). The best dumping place would have been in the field where Davis buried all those bodies, but I'm not sure Chloe knows about it & again she had no transportation.
But she should at least have worn gloves.

Melissa and I posted about thowing the friendship away, and Annie and Cedric both had some other very interesting viewpoints in their reviews about the trash bags and what it symbolizes.
Annie saw her as a fallen heroine, and Cedric saw it as what Chloe has become! I happen to agree with both, and I still think that what I originally took as far as Chloe throwing away her friendship with Clark rings true.
She is doing all this of her own free will, and the consequences of her actions and this decision will be dyer.

Good catch. I didn't even notice the color because I kept thinking, WTF is Chloe doing throwing away Davis' victim's bodies in the garbage?!
Just the smell alone would alert anybody walking anywhere near there that there are rotting somethings in the dumpster.

Does anyone else agree that AM is such a brilliant actress? This scene proves it... the look on her face as she looks down at her hands and sinks to ground..that was so creepy! She's seriously in deep.

I didn't notice the color of the bags at first, but it does seem like it could mean something. I've been thinking lately that Chloe and Clark have been drifting apart. They seem to be at odds a lot: arguing, keeping secrets, talking at cross-purposes. And she is headed toward a Green Arrow kind of mindset/morality that essentially conflicts with Clarks basic conviction, "don't kill".
Clark and Chloe have a basic difference in values. I wonder what will happen when he finds out she has been covering for Dooms. She literally has blood on her hands. Plus she killed Sebastian in her single minded pursuit of "protecting" Clark. Part of me wonders if they can continue to work together, or even remain friends. Maybe things are being set up for a season 9 big split-up between these two.

I've got to say, while I don't like what they're doing with her character, I think AM very consistently "brings it" as an actress. That was a really believable freak out moment.
I also didn't notice the garbage bags the first time. I like the idea that, in covering for Doomsday, she's throwing her relationship with Clark in the garbage (in body bags, no less!)

Didnt notice that the first time around but i agree, it couldnt have been a coincidence. The whole chloe throwing away their friendship and clark having the same fate are interesting ideas. I think both are right too. Gotta love the symbolism in Smallville.
And as others mentioned...Seriously..couldnt chloe have found a better way to dispose of the bodies? maybe a lake or burying them or even throwing them in a different dumpster! preferably one far away from where you live! and secondly she should have worn gloves because first off, ew disgusting! secondly, her fingerprints would show up if anyone found it. Oh chloe. I suppose we should give her a break though, this is her first time at doing the whole "disposing of dead bodies thing" but i think she's been lacking a little common sense lately...

Wow -- I hadn't notice the r & b bags before! Definitely not a coincidence. Red trash bags, by the way, are the universal symbol for "biohazard," so the trash men won't take them. (Apparently Bloomingdales once had the not-well-thought-out idea one christmas to sell red garbage bags, and it was a huge mistake because nobody would pick them up!)
Also, for the Shakespeare fans, that bloody scene (and Chloe's jitters in general) was reminiscent of Lady Macbeth I think. Allison is fantastic.

Don't forget she had no transportation after her car was stolen. She could have put them in a further dumpster, but the chances a cop could have seen her would increase. Plus the guy in the bags must way around 200 pounds. Davis should have dumped them.

Having stuck my hand very far down the symbolism pot and pulled out acorns of symbolic goodness myself, I congratulate you for noticing the red & blue bags. I can't believe I didn't notice them before, because I don't even know where to find red or blue plastic bags of that size. I agree, this is symbolic. But what is it representing?
I personally do not see this as the Chloe tossing away her friendship with Clark, but I can see where Chloe is hiding from Clark. I think it took all it was in Chloe to tell Clark she didn't need a super-save. Tossing to me reads as if Chloe doesn't care, and I do think she cares a great deal.
Also, for the Shakespeare fans, that bloody scene (and Chloe's jitters in general) was reminiscent of Lady Macbeth I think. Allison is fantastic.
Mimi- bless you for posting that thought! She has blood on her hands and feels guiltly. Lady MacBeth express her guilt and remorse with Out, out damn spot. Chloe takes up the MacBeth overlay--she's remorseful. Such a well acted scene.
I'm not willing to rule out the possiblity of this foreshadowing the disappearance of the Red/Blue Blur and Chloe's work to hide him. The colors, at this time, are more representitive of Clark's hero persona, and not Clark himself. Especially when 1/3 of this episode focuses on RBB's interactions.
It's a really cool find and I expect zero acknowledgement from the show toward intent here. However, it's still fun. This is what makes fan interaction so great.

Did she deposited the bags in the trash bins right outside her apartment? How obvious is that? I mean she's gonna be suspect numer one when they find whatever was left of the body.
