It'll probably flop in a Freaks & Geeks sort of way, but this does look kind of awesome for some reason:

I'll watch it. I have mad props for Ryan Murphy. :) He is right up there with Stephanie Savage and Denise Leary but not quite as high as Joss Whedon and Ron Moore.

Plus I am a total sucker for jazzy pop numbers. ;)

I was able to get an early peek of Glee (premiering on Tuesday after American Idol on FOX). Here's what I thought:

What can I say, without any earth-shattering spoilers? First of all, its #1 best trait is it leaves you feeling GOOD. So much TV can be a downer, with sad moments happening for this person or the other person, but this... just felt nice. And I think it'll be impossible to watch an episode without getting songs stuck in my head for the next day.

I'm not a "shipper," and I think the instant expectation is for people to pair Finn and Rachel, but the couple to watch is a pair of adults. You'll know who I'm talking about when you watch.

I also loved seeing actors I was familiar with seeing on other shows (like half the cast has been on Heroes) and putting them in a different setting playing very different characters.

I admit, I don't know the character names that well yet. To me, the characters are The Teacher, The Jock, The Star, The Big Black Girl, The Wheelchair Guy, The Gay Kid, The Annoying Wife, Charlie, Bob, The Drill Instructor Cheerleading Lady, and The Coach. But somehow that's not necessarily a bad thing. These characters are richly written and I think it's great to see that. On a similar note, I watch 90210 but I don't really "connect" with those characters in the same way.

This show could go either way, much like these kids from the Glee club. It could be wildly popular, or it could be derided by cooler kids as "too [whatever]" to watch. I'll definitely be tuning in again.

Good review.

Isn't it on iTunes, too?

They have a sneak peek online right now.

I have seen some preview footage. And I have to echo the above words. The show is NO downer. I felt really great watching what I got to see. It made me smile. I only got to see about half. Ryan Murphy, job well done.

Apparently the songs will also be avaliable on iTunes. I am not sure if they are doing it for the premiere but next season for sure.

It has some competition next season though... at least after January. It is airing Wednesday @ 9 PM. Unless LOST moves again.

I liked it. I wasn't really paying that much attention (left fox on after idol), but from what I saw it was good.

Two actress' from Heroes are in it. ;) I couldn't place the red headed woman at first. (she played Charlie on Heroes. :P) And Claires mother.

Anyway I'll be probably watch the next episode.

I actually found it to be quite good (for just a 1 episode preview)...IMHO, knowing FOX, it won't last more than a few episodes unless it gets some really high ratings in the fall. It could do much better on a network catering to young teens/adults.

It's very hard to see the show lasting. Are they going to do a repertoire of songs going for 22 episodes, assuming a full season pickup, because that's what a lot of people will tune in for? Most shows have issues with licensing for a handful of songs. It's a great idea for a small movie, but a whole series seems too long for such a premise.

Off-topic: This reminded me of the "Frat Pack" idea of doing a movie centered around college a capella groups.

Dominicus
05-20-2009, 12:55 AM
They seem to put the entire show into one episode, too much, too fast, little back ground and it got a little boring after awhile. A few good puns but bad flow. I can't see this lasting as it is, maybe it will get better, but it's just Sing the series to me.

CallMeClark

I think the point was to make it a mini-movie of sorts to use as a spring board for next season. I really enjoyed it. :) The counselor is adorable.

I hope that it doesn't suffer the fate of many shows on Fox of getting cancelled just as it's getting good (like Firefly and, according to my brother, Drive). A spoiler from Ausiello!

Question: I just finished watching the pilot episode of Glee and it was amazing! Do you have any info/spoilers about the show that can hold me over until fall? --Heather
Ausiello: The club's token gay (a.k.a. Kurt) gets a love interest in the third episode, but not one he was expecting.

06-02-2009, 01:58 PM
Yeah it was fun but can they maintain this level of fun zaniness? I think the lasting potential is in the characters. Very well drawn and well cast. My faves so far are Emma, the jock guy, the cheerleading coach and the guy organizing the glee club. Rachel was a blast when I first met her, then she got grating.

Yes, the characters will hold the show together. I like the "jock guy" too...aka Finn. I think Tina C and Kurt will be great characters once they actually get a chance to shine. So far they are just background right now. I too enjoyed the cheerleading coach and I also like the former Glee Club teacher who got fired. "Chronic Lady"

Are they planning on having the Glee club perform songs every week? Or were "Rehab" and "Don't Stop Believin'" just a one time thing for the Pilot?

Violet-Shadow
06-03-2009, 09:06 PM
I think we'll probably have music performances in every episode, since the music is what brought all these zany individuals together. I HOPE, also, that there are music performances since that's a big draw for me to the show. Also, the list of future guest stars indicate that we will see much more song showcases. Yay!

CallMeClark
06-04-2009, 05:21 AM
Yeah, most if not all episodes will have performances. And the plan is to release the music the following day on iTunes. :)

As to your spoilers, Julie, that is also referencing Miss Chenoweth's appearance. I hope lots of Broadway stars stop by! :)

Violet-Shadow
06-04-2009, 08:36 PM
Yes, I was talking about Kristen Chenowith. And also Josh Groban. I have to say I'm looking forward to Chenowith the most...

I'm way into this show...so sad. And only one episode to hold me over to the the fall. So, I am the only one who wants Will to find happiness with his wife? I've read that there are already Will/Emma shippers (Wemma?) but I prefer...Werri? Till? How 'bout just Mr. and Mrs. S?

ginnyfan
06-05-2009, 12:47 PM
Glee spoilers? Wow. I really don't get spoilers.

I also hope that there are songs every week. The show already seems to be cashing in on that concept and... a musical show is what excites me about Glee.

I'm watching the pilot episode right now (it's on a commercial break) and I love it!!!

I loved it even before the first commercial break came on.

I'm a teacher and I totally relate to what Mr. Schuster (btw - good last name :) ) is trying to do with these kids and motivate them.

Granted, I relate to his 'dark moment' when he essentially blackmails the football player (I just can't remember his name...I'm learning my own students' names right now!) even though there was a large part of me that shuddered at the conversation in the office.

But, I love his passion and desire to change these kids' lives. It just came back on, so I have to post now.

And, the way that music is threaded through the show subtly in the background and with the songs in Glee club is very inventive.

It's like, she is in it for the fight! That's the joy...the thrill of competition. She loves her competition for playing w/ her.

I LOVE to hate Jessica Gysleg (I murdered her name's spelling). She smiles in joy after knowing Indonesian children made her banaster. It's so sick!!! :rotfl:

I agree. They had the free clip on You Tube for a month or so...wasn't happy about it.

It was easier to take and a little more enjoyable when expecting it though.

I loved that too. It shows the potential for this show, and in how many ways they can play with "music" as a tool to entertain and further communicate story.

The comedic writing, music, cast = standout entertainment.

During that last scene, I could feel the musical montage type of scene coming on and was wondering if anyone would actually sing. I'm glad they did because having the actors sing those types of scenes is a great way to break from the traditional scene with some random background song and add even more power to it.

Lots of witty dialogue and situations, as in the pilot. The music wasn't as catchy this time around but give them time. I love each of the characters in their own way, and if I don't love them, I love to hate them (Mrs. Shoe I'm looking at you). Definitely looking forward to seeing more.

I was so excited for this show but the 2nd episode disappointed me for so many reasons. Ryan Murphy can do better (Popular, such an awesome show) so I'm hoping that it'll get better. Mostly, it's just Rachel and Finn. Their storyline was pretty boring in Showmance...and I hated the mocking of the purity/celibacy club. Kind of a slam to people who believe in saving sex 'til marriage. I'm giving this show one more chance, as the secondary characters seem to have promising and interesting storylines ahead.

CallMeClark

Yeah, and there was that one line from Kurt to Mercedes about fashion. That line was golden. I'm hoping for more Kurt/Mercedes friendship in the future because I think it will be fun. And Mrs. Shue is also an interesting, complex character who I'm hoping will be further explored. She doesn't seem to be purely evil (as I'm sure some would like to believe) but, rather, she has plenty of poor qualities that make her seem awful, but she also has a heart, which was seen at the end of episode 2. These two things, mostly, give me hope for future episodes.

^I'm looking forward to more about the secondary characters as well.

The second episode was... okay. Not as good as the Pilot but it set up the goal of recruiting enough people for the club to qualify for regionals. It was a little hard for me to buy that Will was so out of touch that he would be that obstinate about disco. But he was hanging on to his glory days I guess.

Mercedies is... so cliche. I'm happy to see a black girl on the show but... *shudder* Hopefully as the show continues they will have an episode or two to give her character a bit more dimension.

I was hoping that the tension between Rachel and Finn would... play out a little longer. Not too long but... I loved the picnic moment and I was on the edge of my seat to see what would happen but... I wish they'd ... taken more time before letting them kiss. Ah well... Finn's mental reaction was hilarious and Rachel weeping and singing into her hairbrush almost makes it worth it. :D It kind of diffused the tension between Rachel and Finn so now the most exciting potential romance for me is Emma and Will. Though the Football coach got a few points from me for his awkward, nervous speech to Emma. <3

I continue to adore Emma. Cleaning together as a first date... PERFECT. Love to hate Will's wife. I LOVE the principal. He was the funniest character in the second epiosde. Oh his reaction to the performance in the gym! LOL! Sue is still wonderfully evil. I loved the cheerleaders' audition for the glee club. Can't wait to see how Rachel vs. Quinn plays out in terms of glee club, not Finn.

I liked the second (dialogue wise) because it was so filled w/ humor...moreso than the 1st, but the pilot had more/better songs...

I thought it has some high points but overall I was disappointed that yet again the teacher can't keep his focus on the club and goes off on some tangent setting them back once again. A little early in the season to revisit the same behavior again. Didn't care for the Bring it On type of rip off with bringing in a crazy dance coach then they end up believing in themselves anyway..... I was hoping for more. That being said I did enjoy a lot of of the one liners and did like that characters that haven't been front and center before had more of a substantial role.

On the bright side, I liked that the gay kid came out in this episode and they didn't drag it on forever. When Rachel came up to her and said she was crazy for chasing a gay guy, I said to myself "Exactly!"

The whole Mercedes/Kurt story was too obvious in the sense that it wasn't a shock (from the first episode), he's Gay and is in love with Finn. Don't tell us he hasn't told anyone else his situation...we already knew it. I personally what to see more Rachel/Finn moments. I loved that scene in the hallway.

Just one question: Will we get more spontanous dance numbers, out of nowhere with each episode?

All these comments aren't making me too psyched for episode three, which starts here in 20 minutes. I was hoping for a Popular-esque satire but it doesn't sound like it's quite hitting the mark. I will reserve further judgment 'til after I watch the episode.

What I don't get is why he had to come out? Anyone with eyes and ears can clearly see that he's gay. Why have the cliche'd after school special moment? It didn't need to happen.

I know. That's what I was thinking.

But on the bright side, I think I'm actually starting to like Terry. I'm also starting to like Quinn. She's awsome for standing up to the Sue like that.

(My opinion below)

It's sad that every time I see Will, Rachel or Finn, I think "Yawn, next scene please." I can't help but feel that these three are bo-ring, which is sad since they are the main characters. It would almost make me hope that there would be more focus on the secondary characters, like Quinn and Sandy who have both had some snappy dialogue, but then there is a shift in focus to Kurt and Mercedes and I couldn't help but cringe at first...then came the carwashing scene. That was pretty good, I admit. Boy, can Mercedes sing!

Then along comes Puck with his random monologue and reveal about his character (and Santana breaks up with him because of his credit score? Lol). That moment, although distubring, was wonderful, and reminded me of the magic of the first episode. It makes me want much more focus on Puck in upcoming episodes.

The episode picked up for me when Montana came on the scene. I loved his insulting of the teens and Rachel's one great line in the episode - "I'm taller than you."

As far as ships, it's obvious the audience is supposed to be rooting for Rachel/Finn and Will/Emma but I want neither. I find Rachel and Finn to lack spark while Will is married - and his character is not interesting, while Emma's is. I want her with someone more interesting.

All in all, this episode showed some promise for the future and I have to keep reminding myself that Ryan Murphy, the guy who created Popular, is behind this show so it's got to get better. Right?

I had groaned when I saw that he was in love with Finn. I'm not big on that story. They could have chosen another guy for him to be secretly in love with. Maybe the one with a thing for cougars.

I think they are going to do spontaneous dance numbers frequently and do it like a musical where people spontaniously sing about everything rather than like a normal show where they sing only when they perform or practice.

Comments on the end scene: Yay! Will/Terri!!! Why is Josh Groban hitting on Will's mom? That's weird but works well.

Okay, theme for the episode: confidence. I get it!

And...Quinn! I really like her. I'm hopeful that she'll grow in kindness and maybe (*hopes*) will form some sort of relationship with one Artie Abrams.

To Josh Groban comments, I thought the point of Josh Groban was to see/hear him sing. Am I missing something?

On rewatch, I did find a quote-worthy one liner from Sue Sylvester to Emma:
"The way you use your mental illness to help these kids is really inspiring."

What was different in this episode for me was the father's reaction. In other shows, I've seen anger and depressed acceptance. This one was a peaceful acceptance. There's no other way to put it, and I found it refreshing.

So I just go around to watching Preggers and I have to admit, I liked it. I didn't think I would, after the last two episodes. I think a large part of why I liked it was that there was a huge lack of Rachel/Finn - none, actually. We got to see Finn interact with Puck and Quinn, which was nice. What was also nice about that was that we got to see more of Puck and Quinn. They've both got some heart to them. I was surprised at Puck's evident feelings for Quinn. He sincerely likes her but she sincerely likes Finn. Kurt's storyline was good too. I'm really enjoying his character.

Then there's Rachel, who has now become my least favorite character, but I'm wondering it that's the point. She's dead set on being a star and doesn't care about anyone else. Case in point: when Tina got to sing Tonight, Rachel had a fit. She needs to let others have the spotlight too. I'm thinking/hoping that she'll learn how to be a team player in the future.

All in all, better episode than the last two, IMO.

I agree. I'm not really a Finn/Rachel shipper and I like other characters better (Kurt!) so it was nice to see both of them in a different plotline interacting with dif characters.

Interesting theory, I have to agree again with you :) haven't thought it that way though. Rachel is very competitive so I bet it will be a hard way down to her.

Violet-Shadow

There are real couples...Will and Terri are a real couple. Will obviously cares a lot about his wife. Yes, he has these blossoming, confusing feelings for Emma, but he still loves Terri. And I think that she loves him too. I think Terri being "pregnant" is somewhat of an incentive to stay with her but I believe he would have anyway, at least for awhile.

And Quinn and Finn clearly care about each other as well. Finn does like Rachel but he also likes Quinn.

Both male characters are conflicted but they're still in real relationships, with people they really care about and want to be with. At least, that's the way I see it.

I think Will is doing the right thing trying to build up Tina's confidence. Sorry Rachel.

I'm still happily shipping Will and Emma.

I think using a pregnancy to trap a man in a relationship is REALLY disgusting so I hope the ball drops on Quinn soon. At least in the case of Will's wife, he CHOSE her, he wants to be in a relationship with her and have a family. Ug. Finn is not even gettin' any!

It's funny that there seems to be a general consensus in here that Quinn's the bad guy in the situation...I didn't really see what she did as a tactic to keep Finn in a relationship with her. Instead, I saw a scared 16 year old girl who found out that she got pregnant by her boyfriend's best friend, after he got her drunk and took advantage of her in a vulnerable state (probably 'cause he was in love with her...still...not the best way to win her affections). I think she loves Finn and thinks he would make a better father Puck. She's thinking of herself, yes, but also her future child. Anyway, JMO...and I am partial to Quinn.

I don't think it's weird that Will didn't ask Finn how it happened. I mean Will probably just assumed that they were both irresponsible and didn't think when they "had sex." If I was Will I would have been shocked but not ask how she got pregnant. Like I said, he probably just assumed that they weren't thinking and got intimate like a lot of teenagers in high school.

Well, I think I was reacting defensively in regards to Finn. Quinn is the bad guy in her treatment of Finn - lying to him and traping him in a situation for her own benefit. But I do think you are right that she has been wronged also. That mohawk guy took advantage of her, maybe because he loved her... but it wasn't right. Also, she is young and her situation is very scary... and her motivations... wanting to have a stable guy as the father of her child... are not all bad. So I do see that side of things. I do like Quinn as a character. Specifically lying about baby daddys is just... gross to me. LOL! But I'm not throwing her whole character away because of it. I hope she... thinks better of decieving Finn as the show continues.

Violet-Shadow

^^^ I think that she will. It seems she's already becoming a kinder person so I'm guessing (and hoping) that she will continue to grow in that area, as well as others. Clearly, per the last episode, she truly cares about Finn so I'm sure that eventually she'll feel guilty about the lie.

Is this the glee Anonymous meeting?

Alright then. Hello. my name is cousteau, and I like Glee. I watch it with my girlfriend, and enjoy the musical numbers. I also like hot blonde cheerleader girl and hope to god she's legal so I don't end up feeling like some kind of pervert.

edit: thank christ, she's 22.
