View Full Version : Is anyone else finding this constant love/hate really hard?

Every single time i start to enjoy the show again, i get hit with an episode that makes me angry and upset... and i don't know how much more i can take... seriously!
I know it's silly to get so emotionally involved in a show, but i love the characters and i love the story. Eternal did as much damage to this season as Power/Requiem did IMO. And to have it follow an episode that had me praising Smallville again is just really demoralising...
How can they go from such a wonderful script, to such an awful one? How do they justify not bothering to check on FACTS before they come up with back stories that make no sense. I mean how can they keep claiming that Lionel didn't realise there were two boys that came down that day, when for her to know about both Doomy and Clark, he would have to have written about two boys in his journal! It makes NO SENSE!
I'm gonna go watch Hex and pretend Eternal didn't happen. But i just can't believe they are leaving us with THIS just before ANOTHER hiatus... yet again, we will be stuck talking about an awful episode for 2 weeks :(

I loved the episode personally, but I know what you mean (hated a couple like Committed). This episode actually got me excited about Smallville. I know I will be talking about this for weeks. :)

This episode was full of so many plot holes it's ridiculous.

ITA. I got so fed up I actually left for a while. If the show starts disappointing me more times than I'm happy, I'll definitely leave again, or just be a fickle viewer.
The problem is, they're trying to cater too many storylines/fanbases at once and it ends up disjointed. I wish they'd just stick to two or three main arcs and leave it at that. Instead of leaving you with completely contrasting episodes in terms of style; comedic to tragic then to romance. It really spins my head.

To be honest,if it hadn't been for James Marshall, this episode would have been far worse. The writing by two of Smallville's showrunners(and future sole showrunners) was shocking. And i wish it was just the facts that they got wrong.Chloe's line about Jimmy being her best friend was terrible as well.Since when are married couples best friends?Aren't they like companions? And wasn't Clark supposed to be her best friend anyway?Nonetheless,if you are willing to look past all of this, you can enjoy this eppie for 2 reasons:1)The acting where all 4 of them were brilliant and 2)the tension of the episode.Especially the scene with Davis in the cage had me with my heart in my mouth. And in the end i did like it more than Hex because here some arcs advanced.Hex,as funny and light-toned as it was,was like a glorified filler in that sense. For me the real problem is what happens next year with these 2 just in charge.I hope they get someone like Byan Miller to help them out with the callbacks or we are in for a rough ride next year.

I agree the acting was good... but because what they were acting was so awful and irrational, i was staring at the screen thinking that it seemed out of place...
Chloe crying as she struggles to kill Davis... well it was just ridiculous... even though it was well acted...

That's why i praised Marshall.Because he made that cage scene which had many weird lines something special.I liked Clark's line about him and Davis being brothers because it was typical Clark Kent generosity but i was also scratching my head.As much as a victim Davis is,he is carrying with him the beast that crushed the wedding and nearly killed Jimmy. And Clark knows this, yet he feels that they could have been brothers.

At times Smallville is definitely a hard pill to swallow. I got SV burn out back in season 7 and had to take a break about mid way through the season but once I found out MR KK were not returning I decided to give season 8 a try and LOVED IT... untill you know WHO came back. I suffered through her return, thought the show was going to get BACK on track(to what the earlier season had going on) but WRONG again.
Now TPTB want to screw Chloe and Jimmy all up and over what(or should I say who?) Davis Bloome. Oh come on it's really getting hard for me to accept the direction the show has taken once again but thank God there's only 4 more shows left to hopefully END this story arc once and for all!
Not sure what season 9 is gonna offer but hoping it's just as good as the first half of this season maybe even BETTER so try and hang in there!

I didn't care much for this episode myself, I don't think it did anywhere near the amount of damge the Super Lana arc did. For the most part Clark came off looking good this episode(can't say that about Lana arc) and while the retconning didn't make any sense in many places, if you just ignore those inconsistiences it doesn't change much about the season or the current storylines.
I just wish the show would focus on Clark more though, this episode did absulutely nothing for his character(which I guess isn't terrible when you compare what Super Lana did to it)

Since when are married couples best friends?Aren't they like companions? Me and my wife are best friends, that's how it started and she still is. You have to be if you want to get committed to each other.

Of course,i am not denying that.I thought it was a bad line for three reasons.1)I expected her to say that Jimmy was something more to her than that. That's why i said "companion".Soulmate would have been another one.2)I thought that Clark was her best friend.3)I didn't think that they were ever best friends before they went into a relationship. This line is not the end of the world, for sure.It was just another thing that had you scratching your head in this episode. And it alarms me when i think that these two writers will be the sole showrunners next season.

I guess they thought maybe, soulmate sounds too mushy and companion too distant... I dunno, I'm just roughly speculating. I agree that there are a lot of plotholes and other errors in this episode, but this didn't really bother me at all.

Yeah... I'm sort of sick of the quality whiplash, but I doubt I'll stop watching unless they do something REALLY atrocious.
I shouldn't say that. I've just jinxed us. Gah! We're all doomed. When they tell us that Chloe is, in fact, an advanced Kryptonian-human hybrid cyborg pizza roll whose ultimate mission in life is to steal some of Lex's eyebrow hair to genetically engineer a human-pizza race to rule an underground society of mole people, we can all look back on this moment and blame me and my big mouth.
On a less loopy-at-7-AM note, I usually deal with the bad episodes by focusing on how awesome the acting is. It doesn't make up for the bad writing, but it really is quite fun to watch for me. That, and I nitpick like there's no tomorrow.
I know it's silly to get so emotionally involved in a show...
Nonsense! What fun is a show if you don't get emotionally involved?

I personally don't think Chloe crying as she struggled to kill Davis ridiculous. I'd cry if i had to kill someone who i felt close to, which she obviously does with Davis.
The only ridiculous thing to me, was Clark telling Davis everything that had happened as his fault. It wasn't his fault. At the point of Lionel finding Davis he only thought there was one boy that fell to earth. He found out after that Clark had fallen to earth too.

I agree, the writing is really inconsistent from one episode to the other. BP & KS tried to do what could pass as an important mythos episode but they were too lazy to 1- come up with an original story 2- check out the facts or have someone check them for them.
But I think it reflects the general writing of the show: lazy, lazy, lazy; with a few exceptions. BQM is new, and I guess he's eager to be re-hired next season. Septien/Meyer do a good job with re-hashed plots.

I'm guessing you enjoyed last week's crap fest HEX? We'll I didn't and I actually enjoyed this episode. Yes, it had a lot of retcons but it was far better than last week's crap of deconstructing the characters and their history on the show. Chloe pimping Clois? How in the hell does that make sense? Chloe completely giving up journalism altogether (without giving a explanation as to why that is) while disregarding the fact that she has been both a reporter and Watchtower in the past. Clark AGAIN being all mopey dopey regressive about wanting to be normal. Haven't we been through this like a gazillion times already? Lois, being a star reporter in Offscreenville. God knows we never see her work her way up onscreen. I could on and on, but I think you get the point.
I understand what you're saying though. I'm sick of the love/hate relationship with this show and usually the episodes involving Clana, Clois, or jerky, insensitive, unsupportive best friend Clark are the episodes I detest the most.

Sorry i didnt explain myself very well... it's not that her crying if she had to do it was ridiculous. as you said, of course you'd cry... it's that she was acting like she HAD to do it... which is such a ridiculous concept, especially when by the end of the episode we can see that she never did have to... that it was never a 'struggle' really... it's ridiculous that she would so easily jump to 'yes, you have to die' instead of doing everything she could to save him... which she is now going to do, and that decision was changed in a heart beat

Like someone said above their trying to cater to every fanbase that they can.
Not every viewer is a fan of the DP Metropolis storyline. Some are tuning in to see the Beauty and Beast Chloe/Davis storyline etc.
I know and a lot of other Clana fans loved the Lana storyline.
That's why TPTB hired different types of writers. Each has a specialty depending on what kind of episode they want written.
I just accept it. It's been going on for awhile now.

IA, the acting is always great, the cast is brilliant, IMO, but the writing constantly seems to hit these all time highs & lows with the fans(at least with this fan) so much I think that often leaves too much room for error on how I(we) perceive the show(or a particular story) should've or could've gone.
The writers decide to go for it, make a change and BOOM some of the fans absolutely LOVE IT, some HATE IT and then some who have reached the point they could care less no matter what's done. :(
At the end of the season I consider myself lucky if I actually liked(or really enjoyed) HALF of the episodes. I'm just too picky, it's one of MY character flaws. :p

I think the episode was good and the plot holes were obvious. I'm not trying to let anyone off the hook but as you recall, they had to write two sets of episodes and do reshoots of several filmed episodes based on the series renewal.
Like last season with the strike, some episodes seemed disjointed, I think as tough as it is to swallow, knowing they had to do two sets of scripts for two separate endings may contribute to their lack of research in the details they present.
I'm a huge basher of the writers on a lot of occasions but even with the holes, I found this to be a really entertaining episode.

I understand what you mean. I don't see my husband as "my best friend" eventhough in a way, he is( like davis bloome said it for his wife).
But f or Chloe it is just ridiculous, especially just after a weeding. It was like she loved Jimmy for years and they spent so much time together that she can used "best friends" for their relationship. But they even didn't live together yet !
Sometimes, I really think the writers don't know what is a couple when I hear the quotes they are writing...
