Seriously, did I miss something?

Maybe the same way Clark did... from people around him ( I suppose someone talk a little bit to that poor kid meanwhile he was on Luthor's house).

And maybe Kryptonians are faster to learn languages than humans...

I listed this as a plothole in the Plotholes thread. Clark did not speak when he first arrived. We saw scenes of him playing with Martha in Lineage & not saying a word. The same should have been true with Davis.

Secretly, all races secretly speak English. Seriously, watch Star Trek. It's true.

Totally the right answer. :)

Yeah, apparently Kryptonian is really english. They just write in symbols. That was such a stupid plot hole. Kal-El didn't talk at all, but Doomsday did... hmm... Some smart piece of matter... wow.

Oh! he talked english just when he came to earth... I missed that part, sorry...

Maybe when he was made by Zod he added an "english" gen... he knew it might be helpful for his son when he landed earth...

I might be able to buy rapid learning, but you'd think Lionel would spot that as a red flag. Really, a scream would have worked just as well instead of a clearly audible "No!" when they shoved him into the cage.

Yea that was a pretty big oversight on Smallville's part.

Actually, I believe that as part of a previous episode, it was stated that he would have the ability to adapt to any environment. And that would probably include speaking the language of wherever he landed. Even if he were to land on another planet other than Earth. I can't say for a certainty that it was a previous episode, or I might have read something about his origin somewhere online.

Any possibility theres a drop of Brainiac that he decided to put in that DNA cocktail? Might explain the english and the attraction between Davis and Chloe.

I caught that as well. Clark didn't speak at first when found, so I wondered how Davis did so quick.

Wow, I nailed it in my Where the hell is Lex thread. Davis obviously got a Hooked on Lexy Phonics kit. :)

He was obviously programmed to know the language. How/why else would he immediately transform into a young child instead of being a baby? Clark was different, he grew in the spaceship.

I'm going to be an uber Trek Geek and point out that Star Trek aliens don't actually speak English, they have the universal translator. Yeah, I know, I'm cool

Although, everybody knows that all Stargate aliens speak English ;)

A blob of goo transforms nearly instantaneously into a small child and the part you are concerned with is him immediately speaking english? :)

A blob of goo transforms nearly instantaneously into a small child and the part you are concerned with is him immediately speaking english?Apparently. I think this is a gaffe on the part of the writers. Or maybe they think we were too dumb to notice. Either way, I guess that TPTB are assuming that whatever language the show is airing, the audience is so egotistical that they would automatically assume that this character would just speak their language and none other.

It was a service patch from Microsoft? He must have rebooted between the time they put him in the cage and the time that Lex found him.:D

I mean think about it blackouts = reboot. He must be getting some major patches.

He was created to be part human and probally to speak english.

That's basically what I was thinking. I definitely noticed when Tiny Doomsday was running away from the authorities that he was screaming "No! No!" at the same time - so this immediately led me to think that Doomsday could speak the language because he was programed to.

I noticed that almost immediately after hatching from his egg he screamed, "NOOOO!" when those guys captured him. Then within five days of being at the Luthor mansion (which I thought Lionel never lived in prior to the Pilot) he was fluent in English.

----- Added 1 Minutes later -----

I assume that Zod and Faora deliberately engineered him to be human (which in Sc-Fi means Anglo-American.)

Lol my wife wanted me to say "Because he's a million's times smarter than Clark!". Don't shoot the messenger. To add the rest you said "Brains you either got that or you don't"...
It's nice when your wife has a crush on a character and it's my your own fault cause yeah I dragged her into watching smallville, but her interested doubled or better yet tripled when she saw SW in it.

Personally it might be a plot hole. Though you've seen Clark going through a book reading the complete thing in a minute in other shows. Davis IS older than Clark so maybe he did the same?

AgentChaos
04-03-2009, 06:45 PM
Brainiac told him in Legion that his DNA was designed to adapt to any world he inhabited. That would include whatever language was being spoken wherever he landed.

I think you have to look at it as since he was engineered and not born he has a head start on Clark plus who knows how long Davis was on Krypton before being sent with Clark who was just a baby when he left

Davis Bloome
04-03-2009, 08:16 PM
I don't think he was on Krypton at all. Seeing how he came out of the cocoon it seemed he was right born here on earth. The liquid probably evolved and maybe because of coming in contact with earth's atmosphere adapted itself and became human.

krpto
04-03-2009, 08:41 PM
he was created to adapt and fit into any area so I'm sure he'd use english as part of his blending it just like taking the form or a white kansas male to fit in the kansas instead of being in an alien form from the start and having to prtoect itself rightafter forming davis speeking englsih was ment to help him blend in and if anything in eternal needs explanation it why the starblade fell apart when lex and lionel touched it if only sageeth could destroy it and davis is supposed to be sageeth.

Well, there is that Rosetta Stone software that's advertised, so we will get another episode called Rosetta that retcons the original Rosetta where Virgil Swann is shown communicating with Clark's ship as it approaches Earth & teaches Clark & Davis how to talk.

Yeah, I agree, Davis/Doomsday was a creation and was programmed to adapt. Remember when Brainiac told Davis his 'love' for Chloe was a programme he created?
There it is!

I noticed the english thing immediately. As soon as little Davis screamed "Noo!" I was confused. The shock continued when he and Lex had their first conversation. There's no reason Davis should've been able to speak english so quickly.

----- Added 1 Minutes later -----

then again he's not a normal kryptonian. he's more like artificial intelligence, like brainiac who definitely speaks english.. i dont know

well brainiac was able to "teach" or give "accesses" to universal knowledge she basicly imidiatly recognized the mark from Maxima why would this be any diffrent?

That is what many of us said in the General SV discussions, "2001 things you learn thanks to SV":lol:It is amazing how aliens speak english as soon as they are on Earth. But I am here to testify it is not so easy according to my little position in this world:rolleyes:;)

Basic Doomsday fact: He is designed to evolve and compensate or adapt for a lack of better word. He adapted to the earth's atmosphere so he could speak English. So it's not a plot hole.

That's possible if they used a device like the one installed in the Kawatche cave wall that taught Clark the Kryptonian language, but one teaching him English.

I totally agree. Kryptonians were very advanced, while I wish it had been explained, I don't imagine there would have been a real natural way of putting that in. But Davis is basically a genetically modified kryptonian, I don't think it's a superleap of logic to believe they programmed him with the english language.

Aw man, this is going to sound so bad, but there was a reason why in Star Trek the aliens spoke english. They had universal translators, lol.

A better example would be the Stargate franchise. Earth teams can go to planets with offshoots of ancient Earth cultures or other galaxies with humans, and they all speak english. Now that's just silly. :D

04-05-2009, 12:36 AM
You all do realize that Clark and Davis were not the first Kryptonian entities to visit earth don't you? Many had visited before to learn about the planet and its inhabitants and whether they just might make a good foster home for someone like Kal-el. I would say that its safe to say the Kryptonians have full knowledge of earthly languages and could easily implant them in a genetically manufactured killing machine like Davis. No big loophole here if you ask me.

*snorfles with laughter* That is perfect! Yeah, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was "how is he speaking English?"

And yeah, they could have programmed Doomy to speak it but if that's true why not "program" Kal for it as well? Jor-El was far smarter than Zod. Also, why would Zod care if his killing machine spoke the language?

Davis Bloome
04-05-2009, 01:38 PM
Cause Kal-El was just a baby when they sent him out. Jor-El would not do any experiments on him, being that he is his son. He would not mess with his DNA like Zod did with Davis.

I put my little investigation here as it is about language. There is a French newspaper on the Chloe's table at the Talon. When Clark took the pic from the table, there is a newspaper on it and I was watching and I read "la gau...s'affront". Clearly it is not english. So I checked. It is a famous french daily newspaper. So I guess aliens, Clark Kent speak fluently French as well. I let you guess who is very excited now:D

OKay, that was one of the plotholes, but I assumed that we were to assume that Zod and FAora programmed the Doomy Goo to know those type of things by instinct once that egg hatched and became a large kid. Of course, let's give Tess a break- she was just narrating a journal and putting her two cents in. But, I have to go with the Star Trek universal translator.

Let's give the writers a shred of credit--yeah, sometimes they make Clark a BDA, but they're not entirely...stupid. They wouldn't overlook Davis' first word being one he's never heard before. The instant he said "no," and during his later conversation with Lex, I immediately assumed Brainiac programming. I'm not seeing the confusion here...
