Lana is devastated her Green-K skin is keeping her from Clark and she went to find a cure. Through her research she found a scientist in, where else but China, and is working with him to reverse the effects. However, through his research they found out the side effects of long time exposure to Green-K. Cancer.

After that realization Lana went into a sort of depression/rage and fought every criminal that got in her way, trying to do the most good in the limited time she had in this world. She made a lot of friends in crime world and learned that in fact Lex wasn't killed in that car explosion. He is still alive and working on a different suit.

Last time I heard, she found Lex and is in contact with him via computer (since Lex won't allow her crazy ass anywhere near his real location). He informed her that he always had a back up power suit, a different kind. One without Green-K side effects. A suit that won't give him super powers, but one that will allow him to live a normal life. He also tells her, "did you really think I didn't have a back-up plan in case my original plan failed?" Lana had to admit defeat. In a moment of weakness she asked Lex to help her. She said, that if he had ever loved her he would set her free from this curse. Lex agrees, under one condition. She will have to do him one favor when he is ready to ask it. To ensure she won't betray him, he implanted a small bomb in her spine that he can set off if she should try anything funny.

Lex' scientists reversed the effects of Lana's power suit, now she is Green K free, but also powerless and on her way to Smallville. She has a dark secret, however, she knows Lex Luthor is alive and coming for Clark. She can't do anything to stop him, nor can she warn Clark. She just hopes Clark will be able to stop him.

Look for Lana in Smallville in S9.

Yeah, but I'm not sure that would prevent Clana from happening all over again. Lana left at the end of season seven too, and it did not hurt the ratings at all. The episodes were horrible and people got fed up, which was proably why Power had so much better ratings than Requiem. This might come as a surprise, but....THE SHOW IS ABOUT CLARK! Lana (or even Lex for that matter) had no effect on the ratings.

Oh, and completely forget about the entirely normal dip after a month off too.
