*500th POST SPECTACULAR*
Tom Welling is a comedian. Clark Kent is a funny man. I liked and laughed loudest at Clark's 911 call. It was something I didn't see coming. Tom should do more comedy roles after Smallville.

I kind of expected him to run to the phone booth as if he was going to change, but then use the pay phone to call 911, so i kinda saw it coming.

Tom was so great. He got a chance to act differently for a change. He did well as the mild-mannered reporter and as himself not realizing that Lois was actually Chloe. I need a break from Clark angst. Judging from the preview, next week Clark will be blaming himself for Davis' troubles. At least I got a week of levity and laughter.

He was funny in an over-the-top kind of way. I would have enjoyed a little less tongue in cheek and a little more earnestness. I thought the laugs would have come more naturally and less forced.
-- The roof scene was excellent though. Mostly I waas talking about the outside scene with the 911 call.

TW did not play the mild-mannered reporter the way I had envisioned but he still did a great job at it. He played it a bit more confident and more sarcastic than I liked but I understand that this Clark Kent isn't the same as the Clark Kent who "pretends" to be a mild-mannered reporter. So a good portrayal overall.

*Claps hands for Tom* He did an excellent job tonight :D:D Is it just me or does it seem that Tom has a lot more fun when he acts with Erica?? Maybe its just my Clois goggles :\ but he really seems more comfortable with his lines and performance.

Now THAT'S a Clark Kent for your @ss! Welling did a marvelous job as the stuffy reporter, and makes me curious as to how he would play the dual roles for an extended period -- as in, a movie (hint, hint, Warner Bros.). Refreshing!

His performance was fantastic! He really does comedy well. I loved the rooftop scene. I was laughing out loud. Great job.
Tom was so awesome in this one!He definitely should do comedy after Smallville. The 911 call was so funny as was the rest of the normal Clark Kent on the DP rooftop.I enjoyed his performance so much in this one.I bet it was a blast for Tom to be so relaxed and lighthearted in this episode. He gave a great performance. Can't wait to see him in Eternal.

Tom did a great job!
TW played this episode so well! As many have already mentioned, he was priceless in his "normal" scenes. Pulling out the door handle, almost getting wacked by Chlois, the hearing. And his 911 scene, I was cracking up! His expressions were priceless! I would have loved to have seen how they got off the roof though!

Tom Welling always does an amazing job with his character and tonight was Clark Kent heavy so I really liked that. It also felt just a little step closer to Superman and Clark took just a little step closer to accepting his destiny.

Agreed. It was humorous, but a little exaggerated (it seems this has been a trend lately)... I don't know, this episode was certainly good, but not phenomenal.

I think with the gloom and doom and seriousness they put Clark through on this show, it must be so much fun for Tom to be able to play something a little different. And he's just got good comedy timing.

I have honestly never been so impressed with Tom as I was in this episode. He absolutely had me laughing out loud. And a lighter Clark is such an enjoyable Clark. I think Tom really connected with the script, and that created magic. :)

I admit a certain bias when it comes to Tom Welling, but this was perhaps my favorite performance he has given to date. I always like it when he has a chance to spread his wings with Clark a little; when he does it inevitably makes a good impression on me. There was a hint of satire/mockery to his mild-mannered reporter and the 911 moment was reminiscent of "Princess Bride" in some respects. He really made me laugh out loud, not something Clark does for me very often. During the roof-top scene the dialog about whether or not he had the ability to fly really had me cracking up. It was a fun poke at the audience and I thought his delivery was spot-on. He got to show more range of emotion in this episode, from oblivious Clark Kent, to dazzled by Lois, to mature and revelatory with Chloe, and I think the producers/writers should take a huge hint from this thread and give him the opportunity to do more. He handled the full range with grace and believability. I enjoyed AM and ED too - but then I typically do. A great job by the entire cast.
A special nod to the script writer - this was one of the best scripts I have seen in a while.

Tom Welling was awesome tonight!! I love it when Clark forgets he has powers...its just soooo cute/funny...I remember in Transference when Lionel was in Clark's body...and Jonathan tells him to lift up the tractor and Clark/Lionel is like "And how would I do that?" with a suspicious look on his face...LMAO..loved that

It was good but not great. I expected more out of his mild-mannered self to be completely honest.

The 911 call was great. His "mild mannered" was so mild, though, that I thought he was going to drool. He just looked so... vacant.

I thought Tom was excellent in Hex, not just in the comedy scenes but throughout the entire episode. Clark seemed much more expressive than he has in the past, it finally felt like I knew what was going on in his head.

Tom Welling was SPECTACULAR in this episode!! I think that's the reason I loved it so much! He was ON TOP OF HIS GAME!!
Loved his comical timing, the gleam in his eye (once again), and the way he delivered his lines, and interacted with both Chloe, Lois and Zatanna was just awesome!!
Nothing to criticize! It was magic!

It reminded me of Reeve's Clark Kent what with the whole 'That could've really hurt Lois', all it needed was the glasses and a word like 'Gee' and he would have been set.

To me, Welling is the best part of the show and in this episode.... he hit it outta the park! TW totally nailed it. SV rarely does "fun." When it has, it's been a mixed bag. Sometimes it's wokred very well, sometimes not. I think sometimes a lot of people didn't get what they were trying to do and those attempts were ripped appart by people (see 'Sneeze' and 'Spell.') But 'Hex' was "fun," a total light-hearted romp...FUN. And a large amount of the credit goes to TW's performance. It could have been horrible, if Welling doesn't do it right and he did get it right. The scene where he calls 911... I was rolling. I had to rewatch that scene about 4 times (had it the DVR.) And add my voice to the praise of the roof scene. How brilliant was he in that. Just great stuff. Welling has fantastic comic timing and he really showed that in this episode. IMO- 'Hex' is the second best episode of the season (behind 'Legion') and one of the best episodes of the series. Thanks TW.

I think Tom completely hit it outta the park in this episode. The 911 call, when EDChloe asks him if he's going to do anything...he has this "Stand aside miss, I'm going to deal with this" attitude that had me bent double laughing. And the whole roof scene...oh lord....his slightly-sarcastic-and-a-wee-bit-dense demeanour just made this scene.
Of course I'm completely biased anyway, seeing as I'm a fan of Clark and Tom, but this may be one of my favourite episodes in the whole SV canon...yes I loved it that much :D

TW's performance is always a bit patchy for me. Most of the time I think he's a bit bland. Other times, he surprises me.
Standout scenes;
1. On top of the DP roof with "NotLois":D.
Clark's dry sense of humour not to "tell human resources" about his alien background. And his look of awe when he realised that "the acoustics up here are incredible" on the DP roof. He played clueless Clark perfectly.
2. The end scene with the real Lois. He played Clarks' awkwardness at Lois' date beautifully, and his moment of sad realisation "yeah it's a good rule" that the boundaries are now in place where their relationship was concerned. He knows she's moving on.

Thought he was slightly off with the door handle line, but other than that it was a solid performance. I also thought he was particularly good in his first scene with EDChloe.
But on to a more interesting question. Do we see him develop this 'face' of Clark Kent into a mask for his Superman side in season 9? He remembers his short phase as normal Clark, so he could potentially do it again but on purpose this time. Obviously it would like look forced if he were to 'lightswitch' to this new persona, especially in front of Lois, but perhaps he could start throwing in a few of the mannerisms he exhibited in this episode?

ITA. I've always thought Tom was a great actor but you are right. We don't see him enough in comedy. The little we saw in committed and with the Clois things made me believe he has many facets as an actor. He is really amazing. Love this guy !:p;)
