From the tiny bit thats been show in the trailer/clip, ED seems to have got Chloe on board. Though of course, AM is Chloe, but i'm sure ED will do well.

I can't wait to see Erica play Chloe. In one of the clips, she was dead on. But in the other clip, her Canadian accent made it sound like she over-pronouncing her final consonants. I am looking forward to watching the whole episode play out.

The one clip i've seen "Oh my god, i'm Lois," was SPOT ON.
I haven't seen anything else though, so i'll vote after the episode.

Though tbh, i think its going to be hard to top Faora honestly.
We have nothing really to compare Faora too. But this is her portraying Chloe.
I just hope people aren't going to be harsh on her whatever the performance is like. Its different portraying an established character.

That's a good point, Jaderoyale.
She'll be judged by what we've seen of AM as Chloe for the past 8 seasons, which is hardly fair, but I have full faith in Erica!!! Of course, I'm partial!;):D heehee

Well, normally, I would not be so presumptous to say that it is the Canadians with the accent, but she is portraying a woman with an American accent, so by comparison, she has a Canadian accent.

I love Erica. I just hope I don't pull myself out of the episode by analyzing her portrayal of Chloe instead of just going with it. I can be very critical. Plus, there is such a difference between Clark and Lionel, but Erica has so much less to go on. The lip bite and doe eyes are all I can think of. Chloe and Lois both speak fast and with mixed metaphors. This is going to be subtle. I know Erica has the talent to pull it off.

I liked her as both. Her dialogue in the beginning as lois was below par. She went in and out of Chloe-ness, but when she hit it, she slammed it out of the park.

I was very impressed, but I think the writing could have fostered her as chloe a little bit (Tiny bit) better.

ED did a great job

IMO this proved once and for all, Chloe could never cut it as Lois, even when ChloeLois was with Clark you could tell something was lacking

As an actress, Allison has a face that she seems to be able to use like elastic to always nail the perfect expression, and Erica did a good job of mimicking that.

I saw alot of Allison's mannerisms shine through Erica, and I'm sure that's not easy considering how vivid, defined and overall vibrant Allison's performances always are.

I'm not sure if its on the same level as Transference, because that was impeccable acting if I've ever seen it.

I like Lois's impersonation of Chloe! She did the same grin or smile Chloe did when she looked at the mirror in the beginning.

ED as Lois- Eh.

ED as Chloe- Two thumbs way down. I couldn't believe her as Chloe at all. She was horrible.

03-26-2009, 07:12 PM
The performance was NOT perfect, but then again, how could it be? Erica Durance was portraying a character that is so well developed and defined by this point. But with all that said, boy did Erica Durance deliver tonight. And I was actually one of the ones who wasn't sure about her portraying AM because I wasn't exactly impressed with the idea of the episode or the concept but after watching it, I'm a huge fan. Erica Durance has impressed me with her acting yet again.

You know what ED's performance was missing? The confidence that Chloe's character possesses. That last scene at the end showed that to me. Chloe is always self-possessed and confident. I think ED just brought a little too much ED to the role of Chloe to make it entirely believable. She still did extremely well. I can't imagine the pressure she was under.

But, I LOVE ED, I LOVE LOIS, I WANT HER IN FULL22 NEXT SEASON.

Carolina87

Chloe is a crisp, speed-talker. ED is a different type of talker, so I can see that occuring just by the very nature of who they are as people.

03-26-2009, 07:35 PM
Erica did a fantastic job. There were a couple of moments where the mannerisms seemed unmotivated but most of the time I completely believed that Chloe was inside that body. When she encouraged Clark to super jump and then transformed back into herself... it was seamless. And at the end, I believed that Chloe had taken that ride... it wasn't at all disjointed. I think the credit for that goes to Erica and probably the work Allison did on set with Erica during production.

I was disappointed that we didn't get to see Allison play Erica. I thought they would switch bodies.

I've been watching her in Final Verdict and saw many of her "SV" traits. Excellent acting tonight in "both" roles and quite believable! She's so much fun to watch.

03-26-2009, 07:36 PM
I think Erica made a very good attempt as "pseudo-Chloe", but I just had trouble believing it for the most part. I don't know if it was her acting, or just the premise being so ridiculous, but the only moment where it felt "real" was the rooftop scene...and even then, it was almost more like "Lois hallucinating" than "Chloe as Lois". I liked the episode, but it just seemed kinda "off" in my opinion.

AndiGirl
03-26-2009, 07:37 PM
She was absolutely amazing!!!! :D
I remember there was a point where she gave a "chloe face" and it was dead on!
Then about half way through her banter with Clark...I literally forgot it was ED playing the role.

It just felt like Chloe and Clark were talking!
A++ To her....she had me convinced! And you know it isnt easy to take on a role someone else has already perfected, and she did it beautifully! :)

ITA. I give this episode 2 thumbs up. The only thing that really bothers me is the people who leave reviews about the episodes before they air...And that hair bow. *snerks* I kept looking at ED/Chloe and thinking "Good God Chlo, you are in Lois' body, don't "F" it up!" LOL!!!

kelly1142
03-26-2009, 07:41 PM
I thought she was fantastic as Chloe. Just the mannerisms and stances alone I thought were perfect. There was a moment after they walked onto the rooftop where Clark is ahead of her and the way Erica did that stance, watching him, it was so Chloe.

I agree. A lot of people already had their minds made up for this performance based on one or two little clips. I saw those clips myself and was unsure of the performance. After watching the episode though, I was blown away by Erica. It wasn't perfect and as you've said a line here or there could have used a little tweaking but more often than not I was impressed and I firmly believe that Erica has proven YET AGAIN that she is a great actress with an ocean of talent.

It didn't fly for me. ED had some moments that were definitely Chloe-esq but overall it was just Lois. She spoke to fast, and was too excited to be Chloe. Chloe gets earnest but not that hyper-excited.

I thought ED did a great job when she was taken over by the wife of Zod (right?) but not this one, sorry.

I do love her new hair color though.

Erica has truly shown that she's not just a pretty face..with a gorgeous body, but a talented/gifted actress. Her performance tonight truly convinced me that she was Chloe during her Chloe moments and that she was Lois in her Lois moments, being able to distinguish the two personalities very well.

You know, after watching this episode for the third time. This was a Clois episode disguized as a Chlark/Clois episode. THe whole thing made me love L&C more.

The last scene was by far my favorite. Clark jab? That's a good rule. Lois double jab: Why don't you add that to your list?

As in, Lois Lane has officially called Clark Kent on the freagin fact that HE LIKES HER. Now, it's in his hands, and I can't wait to see his reaction to her infatuation with RBB.

BRING IT ON TPTB. I'm in love with Clois!

The problem that I had with the performance isn't so much with ED, but with the fact that Chloe and Lois are fairly similar characters.

When AM portrayed Brainiac (Legion) she was playing a drastically different character.

When TW portrayed Lionel Luthor (Transference) he was playing a drastically different character.

If I tuned in part way through this episode, I might have thought Lois was acting slightly strange, but I don't think I would have pegged her as being Chloe. Whereas in the other similar situations I mentioned above, if I tuned in mid-episode, I would quickly be able to tell something was off.

Also, to an extent, she was portraying Chloe as Chloe was trying to portray herself as Lois, so she wasn't necessarily trying to completely embody Chloe in her performance. The similarities between the two characters and the fact that within the episode, Chloe spent some of her time trying to act like Lois, it just didn't feel like there was a whole lot that ED could/had to do to give a great performance. For the most part she was simply playing herself in a lot of ways. Not that she was bad by any stretch of the imagination, I just wouldn't describe it as a memorable SV performance(though I enjoyed the episode on the whole a great deal).

From a purely critical perspective, I absolutely agree that art was not made here. There were elements, if stretched further, that could have made a masterpiece that was Chloe & Clark viewed through Lois.

However, as I see how it was effective for me as a viewer, I realize, the PLOT was simply a ruise. We as the audience were not expected or wanted to fully see a CHLARK episode (IE, recognize ED as Chloe the entire way through), because this was a very political episode aimed at garnering more CLOIS *Despite pretense of Erica* time and getting audience invested and in love with that....for the two who already aren't there.

I actually think, for the reasons stated above, that the brilliance came in the little moments. There were times that Durance made a face that was pure Mack. Like, scary accurate.

Even when she was attempting to be Lois, you could tell somethings wrong.

That's quite and accomplishment - for an actress who plays Lois to play Chloe playing Lois and not come across as ... Lois.

You know what? I enjoyed Erica Durance as Chloe Sullivan quite a lot. She did a pretty good job and I was able to view Erica and see Chloe which is completely freaky and not something I thought was even remotely possibley and yet it was last night. I picked up on a lot of cute mannerisms that AM brings to the Chloe character that somehow ED brought out in her role of Chloe. I wonder if AM helped ED out. If she did, it shows. :)

Yep. I wasn't particularly blown away by her being Chloe as the mix between the two characters is so ambiguous.

But the part where she walks through the doors of the Daily Planet towards her desk and she grits her teeth just the way Allison Mack/Chloe does with anxiety when she walks into a scene was the nail. on. the. head.

First, Erica did a tremendous job portraying Chloe. I thought her mannerisms, "wide eye" look, voice inflection were spot on, especially the scene with Zatanna. She nailed Chloe's character!

With that said, although I liked her portrayal as Chloe, nothing and I mean nothing beats her portrayal as Lois Lane! The last scene with Clark was oustanding! Her and Tom Welling together is magic pure and simple!

Erica, YOU ROCK!!

Wowza, she was awesome as both characters. I think that Smallville really brings out the best in its actors and actresses, because it forces them to act in ways they don't normally have to since their characters are so often under the influence of red kryptonite, alien parasites, the spirits of dead would-be prom queens or witches who were burned at the stake, or switching bodies with each other! LOL.

I completely agree with VisionGirl's assesment. I had a blast with this episode. ED was excellent. She got a lot of Chloe's mannerisms and face expressions down pat. i especially love the wide eyed  and lip biting thing that she was doing. That was so Chloe. I’m a huge Lois fan and I love Erica, too. But I can confidently say that I’m not biased at all by either of them. If anything, my love for the character makes me much more critical towards Erica’s performance since day one. (!)

Maybe that’s why I wasn’t so impressed with her performance in Hex. Especially when Clark was about to do a super-leap. I thought there’s no links between EdChloe and AMChloe in the way they deliver their lines etc. Probably I should re-watch Chloe scenes much more to really understand her mannerism. LOL

That being said, actually I didn’t mind it at all, cos it was such a well written script (IMO) and so entertaining! Also I’m happy to see that so many people find ED’s performance was spot-on as Chloe. Obviously I couldn’t see it but I’m pleased to find out that I’m in the minority. :D

I like Lois's impersonation of Chloe! She did the same grin or smile Chloe did when she looked at the mirror in the beginning. That was the only thing I saw of Chloe in that switch. Everything else was like ....

At times I forgot I was watching Chloe...mainly because ED seemed to stop playing Chloe. If not for the barrette, I wouldn't have been able to keep them apart. I was really expecting to see Chloe snarkiness as the distinguishing characteristic between Chloe and Lois, when they didn't turn that on, it really felt flat to me. Both the acting and writing didn't back up the body switching.

I guess I had high expectations after Transference.

I will have to watch it again, which I will, soon. :D

That said, I noticed a few mannerisms which was nice.

The problem with these kind of switches is that new actor can't really mimic the original actor since someone who is literally in another person's body would never completely act like themselves.

Was the same with Transference. I remember Tom's very accurate 'hesitating Lionel' mannerism just after the body switch when he talked to Lex, but after that TWLionel had to act like Clark to convince everybody he wasn't Lionel, which made it rather tricky to judge Tom's performance as Lionel.

Of course, in this case Chloe wasn't trying to convince anyone she was Lois, but she was still so confused by the whole situation that it was somewhat tricky to judge ED's performance.

She was fantastic! The little mannerisms, the cadence and inflection in her voice, the head bobs and the eye movements were spot on.

Lately I've been noticing that Erica Durance has a little bit of that same quality I remember from Brad Pitt in Fight Club and Edward Norton in pretty much everything I've seen him in, where, as one reviewer put it, it's less like they're acting and more like they're completely disappearing into the character. I've got to say, I'm impressed.

That's a great way of putting it. In one interview Erica once said that she thinks about Lois a lot even when she's not working. And it's no secret that she's completely in love with the character she plays. And it just shows in every scene. As a Lois fan it's amazingly comforting to know that the actress is as much of a fan of her as we are.

I thought her performance was okay. Thankfully, it wasn't as bad as the released clip suggested. Sometimes I saw Chloe expressions and movements, sometimes I saw Lois. It wasn't a perfect performance by any means but she did have some good moments. Her best was probably on the roof when she was trying to get Clark to recognize who he really was. At times her voice was a little over the top (some over annunciation of words and yelling). I have to admit to being relieved when AM returned. That was a great moment.

I definitely prefer to see ED as Lois and AM as Chloe. Just my opinion.

I've been growing more and more impressed with Erica Durance as an actress all season. In this week's episode, I enjoyed her performance quite a bit and I can feel how much confidence the producers have in Erica when they give her the types of roles that require an actress to really dig deep. My favorite non-Lois character that Erica Durance has portrayed is the witch in the episode Spell, but Faora and Chloe this season are close seconds. She's really been able to step away from the role of Lois Lane and delivery a unique and interesting performance in each non-Lois character that she plays. And that's pretty amazing.

Agree with the above post! Erica is a very good actress.

I know I'm biased since I'm an EDLois fan. The only reason I started watching Smallville is Lois Lane (though my initial reaction was "no way" coz she's supposed to meet both Clark and Superman when she's an established reporter).

Erica´s imitation of Chloe is clearly overrated by many. She did OK, but it was not overwhelming. When there was a moment of focus, she nailed some of Chloe´s expressions. It was a nice caricature of AM sometimes. But when things moved more quickly, she clearly spoke and behaved like Lois and forgot all about being Chloe. So, yes, overall an OK performance but not outstanding at all.

Since I am all about surprises, I have to give big applause to ED for her job in Hex. I finally got to sit down and watch it all the way through last night, and since I am not normally a big fan of Erica's I was really pleased to have my expectations proven wrong. I enjoyed how she modulated her voice a bit to better mimic AM's speech patterns -- actor's voices are a big fetish of mine, and so I always appreciate it when actors make it a part of their performance (and speaking of which, I loved Zatanna's beautifully articulated consonants). I also appreciated how she acted through her whole body in the part. My big beef with ED through the years has been that she has seemed to me to be either uncomfortable with using or unaware of how to use her body to express character, but I definitely saw Chloe in the way she pulled at the theater doors and relaxed when in front of the computer at the DP. I did have a few nitpicks, but overall I think she did a fine job.

Watched the episode again last knight and I really began to notice how much of Chloe's mannerisms ED actually put in her portrayel - to the point of it becoming slightly annoying actually, but that's the only way to make it stand out on first (or second even) viewing.

That said, I still find it very difficult to judge this type of performance. There are 2 obvious reasons. First off, any character who is somehow magicked into another person's body will not act like him or herself. I guess ED did a decent job at that, giving her Chloe just the right mix of confusion, discomfort and resignation. The other reason is that, particularly in a series, the portrayal of a particular character owes a lot to a very specific 'flavour' that is brought to the character by the principle actor and that is slowly built up over time. It took at least a few episodes for us to get a feel of Chloe's identity, not just because it takes us time to get used to the character, but also because the actor needs time to grow into the character. This means that another actor who tries to capture the performance of the original actor usually starts off by resorting to mannerisms - there is probably no other way - because it's virtually impossible to grasp that 'flavour'. However, the problem with mannerisms is that it may look like the second actor/character is simply mimicking the original actor/character, whereas it should look like he or she actually IS the original character.

So back to ED's performance. With the possible exception of the scene in front of Zatanna's theatre I never truly felt I was watching Chloe. But under the circumstances I still think ED did a great job. She was very believable as someone other than Lois, and all the mannerisms did strongly remind me of Chloe. It's also important to remember that this body switch was essentially a comedic plot device (as was Clark's) so the performances should be a bit over the top, and they were.

I thought that Erica Durance did an exceptional job of portraying Chloe, especially considering that for a portion of the episode she was portraying Chloe-portraying-Lois. I was impressed with her performance as Faora, but it's one thing to bring a separate identity to the screen and knock that out of the park and a totally different thing to take on a character already heavily associated with another actor and succeed.
