Season one is my second favorite season after S3. The only reason why S1 falls a bit lower is because there wasn't really an overall storyline to the season. It was more stand alone with FOTW's and the Clana drama. What makes it so great though is all of the great dialogue, the Clex relationship, and the character development. Clark was more like Superman in S1 then he is now. Leech is a perfect example of this. Even though he is human, he is willing to sacrifice himself to deal with Eric. That is how Superman is supposed to be. There is also the great line "I would stop people like you" when Eric asks Clark what he would do if he had powers.
I think that S1 is seriously underrated. People often forget about it and don't appreciate it as much as other seasons. The first season started out on a certain path. Clark and Lex would be developed individually gradually moving towards their future personas, and their relationship would be developed as well to show why they have a fallout down the road. Lana was a secondary character, and there was a nice balance with the romance on the show. Clana was always a factor, but it wasn't too overdone. Unfortunately as the seasons progressed, Lana and Clana became more important overshadowing Clark and Lex.

I like those reasons and I think you wrote that post very well. I must say, when I watch reruns of Season One, I feel a warm, comfortable nostalgia because of the vibrant colours of Smallville combined with the simplicity of the Clana relationship and the meteor freaks Clark must fight. He definitely fought to protect the world a lot more than he did in Season Seven where he sat on his butt, prepared to live a peaceful life with Lana.
However, I disagree that he acted more Superman than in S8 - nowadays, he's fully embracing his destiny and fighting to protect Metropolis under his 'Red-Blue Blur' identity, although I can't help he's been forced into this.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed a good chunk of Season 1, and revisit several of the episodes fairly regularly. However, this is primarily due to character moments I enjoy, or particular guest stars that are better than your standard, stereotypical Freaks of the Week. Personal favorites include the "Pilot," of course, along with "Crush," "Obscura," and "Tempest" (the Chlark Trilogy as I like to put it), plus "Stray," "Leech," "Hug," "Rogue," "Jitters," and "Zero."
