View Full Version : Why was Clark worried about the bag?

Clark is treating his red jacket, blue t-shirt & jeans as like they're the Superman suit. It was ridiculous. Who the hell will think he's the RBB with that sort of clothes when the RBB wore a costume when people actually saw him.
This is ridiculous. Give him a damn costume already.

Tess was already suspicious of him. If she saw his clothes in the bag, I think she would've been convinced.

He needs a costume. I find it pretty ridiculous that Clark thinks that not wearing his jeans and red jacket is going to magically erase the fact that this is all he wore for more than 7 years of this show. Is that all it takes? Just stop wearing the red and blue and nobody will suspect him?

Clark was just being precautious. Though, he did seem to be a bit too worried. I guess because it was Tess.

they're just clothes, i'm sure there's a hundred guys in red jackets and jeans in metropolis. a little overdramatic, made it look more suspicious

I think it was stupid of him to hide his clothes if he was just going to pose in them at the end of the episode. He supersped to change and then came out at normal speed and stopped, everyone who wanted to could see he changed clothes, and if they weren't sure, all they had to do was look at the security cameras!
I thought Clark was great in this episode except for that.

I agree. It's just a very silly storyline. If TPTB can't have Clark wear a costume and continue this show, then end the show. Also, it kind of makes the earlier seasons seem pointless. One of the things that was always a concern is people seeing Clark use his powers. Now Clark is using them right in the middle of Metropolis and his "costume" is identical to the clothes that he has had on for more than 7 years now.

I have to totally disagree here. I think the red blue blur is great. No one can see him because he's a blur, he's not letting anyone see him, just slowing down enough so cameras can pick up a color streak. Clark changing was funny and kind of cute.
I love Smallville. Tess is in love with Clark, he makes her feel safe. She's right he doesn't have a bad bone in his body, who wouldn't love Clark.
I dont' really like the Superman costume anymore. It doesn't go with the times. It needs changed, and I think Smallville is doing it right, no costume. That would be cheesy until they fix it. I don't need Clark to ever become Superman on this show, I like it the way it is.

I have to disagree about the Superman suit. It does go with the times because it is bright & flashy and inspires hope, like Superman does. It's about 70 years old and still going strong.
By not giving him an RBB suit, they are taking away any possible interaction Lois, Jimmy & others can have with the RBB. And the loss of such interaction is making the show boring and the time spent on such interaction is instead being replaced by pointless crappy scenes. We can't even enjoy his saves & heroism as the RBB because he has to move too fast for any time to be spent focusing on his heroics. If 99% of his heroics will not be seen except for a red/blue streak, then why not just end the show, because I could care less about the angst.

The suit killed Superman Returns. I like the show the way it is. The show has gone on for 8 seasons without the suit, so it doesn't really need it. I've grown accustomed to Clark wearing normal clothes. I love the red blue blur. lol

That's because it was the Superman Returns suit, which is not the classic bright suit of the comics. The SR suit also had the fake muscles, which looked stupid. Chris Reeve & George Reeves was awesome in the classical suit.
Things have to change though. He can't go around wearing his street clothes while saving the day. Then it makes episodes like Prey, Identity, Infamous, and to a degree this episode look pointless. There has to be progression. Many (including me) watch this show for Clark's heroics. How much can we watch when most of heroics is just a red/blue streak? It really sucks. He only did one thing in this episode that we were able to see and that was jump out of the plane with Tess, which wasn't even fully shown. Heck, it didn't even make sense. If he can't fly, he should have landed with a thud strong enough to kill Tess.

Yup, agreed. It's almost as if TPTB are using this red/blue blur storyline to convince the viewers that Clark is being more proactive and saving people but they don't realize that this stuff needs to actually be shown to have more of an impact on Clark's story.

Let me just say this: if RBB means all we see for 90% of the episode is a streak of blue & red with one save/heroic action at the end, then I'd rather have him back as regular Clark Kent and do his heroics so we can enjoy them. They're using the RBB as a copout so they don't show action scenes & so they could waste the budget on petty stuff.

Look, obviously the suit is not going to happen right now. So, for the time being, the red/blue clothes are a proxy. Does it strain credibility? Yes, but so does 99% of the things on SV. In the grand scheme of things, this seems pretty minor. JMO
And, I thought that scene was cute. Not wanting his boss to rummage through his underwear

Cause they're saving all their money for the finale.... hey I've got high hopes for this finale. It's all I've got and I'm holding on to them. So if they wanna show me a blur a few more times in exchange for 10 mins of Clark/Doomsday battle Titan style I will gladly give up Clark rescuing a kitten from a tree.

Well, they could have at least bought a cheap hoodie and some shades...kinda like what Peter Parker did in the first spiderman movie. Then for the finale they could go all out!

Lol. True. Can't argue with that. But this is tv, we don't know what their budget is exactly. I remember with L&C was on tv, and they needed superman to blur it would cost about $4 million, Dean Cain said once, for a 4 second shot. Smallville is obviously more sophisticated when it comes to effects and we are in a different time. So we don't really know how much that blur costs.

Because his Snoopy boxers were inside.
Now, seriously, poor Clark, he's so naive, he thinks because he only wears black now and changes into primary colors when being the RBB, everyone is going to forget that last week he was wearing that hideous red jacket. Sometimes the writers really succeed in protraying him like an idiot.

Wouldn't work. Because masked faces = secret identity, instantly.
That's why Superman doesn't use masks.
Lets be honest here, the RBB is the ONLY thing that can work now and even the comics are starting to use it, Geoff transformed the Superboy into "The Super-Boy", a suburban myth that saves people.
The only mistake on the RBB story is Clark using the colors all the time.

This is the beginning of Clark's journey towards his secret identity. Give it some time and I think he will improve on the costume. At least now he is wearing the red and blue just when he is in super mode which is a great improvement. Clark is really looking sharp in his new wardrobe. I got a chuckle with Clark trying to protect what he considers his hero clothes and making an excuse that he didn't want Tess to see his underware which wasn't in the bag at all. I do think maybe he needs a brief case now that he is working at the planet to put his jacket and jeans in. We know he has started wearing the blue t-shirt under his outer shirt which is a start. Good things come to those who wait so don't give up so easily that Clark will figure out he needs a better costume in due time.

My main complaint about him not having a pre-Superman suit is that him being just a blur means that the show will evolve from having it be about focusing on Clark saving people to 'ships & angst. As a streak that flashes across the screen, we don't even get to see him using his powers. All we see is a flash for a few seconds & that is Clark's heroics for the episode. The only ones we'll be able to see him fight are those who know or will know his identity (like Doomsday or past villians who know his secret). And if more people find out his identity, then the RBB is a failure.
A streak flashing across the screen also means we can't have interaction between Clark's hero personality & characters like Lois, Jimmy, Tess, etc. This is taking the elements many of us have been looking forward to most & preventing them from being used in the show.

While I agree that the RBB is the only way to go, without some kind of mask, how is he going to be able to communicate with other people? Send them letters signed by the "RBB"?

I found that bag part to be comic relief in a rather dark episode.
It was his gym bag, he said he just came from the gym. I took that as a reason to look at his arms and his abs. Yum!!

Phonebooth change=Amazing Clark's new "Costume"=Pointless, why have Ollie pose in that suit, if he isn't going to wear it. In fact, why isn't he wearing a real suit at all? Everybody saw him in those clothes for the last 7 1/2 years!

That's always bothered me (although I have to give Jimmy kudos for working something out that Lois Lane never did for ~ 70 years :D) I still thought it was a great leap. So everyone who wears primary red and blue is under suspicion of being the RBB? And what would Tess say if she looked at the contents of the bag.. "sooo, red jacket, check, blue t-shirt, check, blue jeans, check.. waitaminit.. haven't you worn these around the DP before??" (And for the last eight years?)

LOL, Plaidman is hilarious. He would end up being nicknamed the Lofty Lumberjack or something. Tess really did seem to be toying with him in that scene -- she was trying to make him uncomfortable and was doing everything she could throughout the episode to try to wheedle his secrets out of him. Having a blue and red change of clothes isn't the MOST incriminating evidence Clark could have used against him, but still... What's worse to me is the way he handled the parachute problem. He honestly couldn't have used his x-ray vision himself to make sure Tess was telling the truth or hadn't missed the chutes? Come on... He practically gave himself away with that one statement about there being only one parachute.
