My guess is that he really is dead, unless MR can return, which doesn't seem likely. I just don't see the point in bringing him back yet again and using the body double. Also, if they just say that Lex is still alive out there, you still need to see Lex to get the payoff. It really is a shame that TPTB pretty much destroyed Lex's character. All series long, he wanted to find out the truth about Clark and when he finally does, MR leaves the show and a stupid body double is used to break up Clana. Then he dies. Pathetic.
