Smallville March Madness

Inspired by the Villain Elimination (GAME) Thread and the March Madness basketball tournament which will begin next week, I bring you, Smallville March Madness! It's set up tournament style. 32 participants, 4 brackets. The four brackets include:
-Kryponite Infected Villains
-Kryptonian/Phantom Villains
-Non Powered Human Villains
-Heroes
Each bracket will include (8) participants. *I apologize in advance if your selection isn't included. I had to draw the line in the sand somewhere. Each participant was ranked #1-8. The matchups are: #1 vs. #8. #4 vs. #5. #2 vs. #7. #3 vs. #6. In the second round, the 1/8 winner goes against the 4/5 winner and the 2/7 winner goes against the 3/6 winner. In the third round, the 1/8/4/5 winner goes against the 2/7/3/6 winner. THAT winner goes on to the Final Four! Once we reach the Final Four, the "Hero" winner goes up against the "Non Powered Human Villain" winner and the "Kryptonite Infected Villain" winner goes up against the "Kryptonian/Phantom Villain" winner. And finally, those two winners square off in the championship contest. Here is how it will work. Four matchups will be posted at once. For example, to start, it will be the (4) 1 vs. 8 matchups. The first contestant to recieve (10) votes wins and moves on to the next round. Any vote after the first 10 doesn't count. Each member can only vote once. Then, the next group of four matchups will be posted, the 4 vs. 5 matchups. And so on. Here are the matchups...

Thanks. I'm a huge college basketball fan. Every year around this time I get the "itch". The NCAA tournament (March Madness, "The Big Dance") starts Thursday. I can't wait. I figured why not do a Smallville bracket? lol I was going to just throw everyone together but then I figured I'd split them into four groups (based on what "type" of character they are) and then let the winner of each group go at it in the Final Four. I'm thinking maybe when we get down to four, I'll ask voters to include a short little account of the battle with their vote. In other words, instead of just saying "person A defeats person B", give a brief account of the actual battle. That might tread close to "fan fiction", but I'm hoping the mods will allow it anyway. If it goes well, maybe we can make it an annual thing and expand it to 64 participants instead of 32.

Martian Manhunter trumps Kara, only because of experience and variety of powers. The telepathy would give him the edge needed, as Kara could technically vaporize him with her heat vision considering Martians' vulnerability to fire.

Lionel Luthor handily defeats Tess, though a bit sadly, in my opinion, as I'm starting to think that Tess is rather cute.

General Zod beats a cheap carbon copy of Clark anyday.

Hmmm... I'm going to vote for Eric Summers in that last one. If he had already leeched Clark's powers from him, he could just use his heat vision (if he realized that he had that ability), or his super-speed to K.O. him with one lightning-fast blow before Geoff Johns could paralyze him. It would almost be a draw.

The two winners will advance to the winner-take-all final. *As previously mentioned, I would like to do the voting for the Final Four matchups a little different (if possible). We will still be taking the most votes out of 10 (11 if neccessary) BUT, I would also like to include a small narrative with each vote. Create a "scene" between the two contestants. Be creative. I don't absolutely insist that you do this, but I encourage it. As always, I'll go first...

(Clark vs. Lionel)

Clark: I don't know who you are Lionel. First you're my mortal enemy and now you're claiming to be my self-appointed protector. Who are you Lionel?

Lionel: I told you Kal-el, I've always had your best interest at heart. Even before you came to Earth. Even before I knew who you were. Protecting you has always been my life's work. I just had to be sure...

Clark: Don't call me that. Don't ever call me that. My name is Clark Kent. I'm not this Traveler. I don't have a "destiny".

Lionel: But you do Clark. You always have. I could feel it when I was Jor-el's vessel. He loves you son.

Clark: I'm not your son. You're a murderer. You killed your parents and you've ruined the lives of countless others. How can I ever trust you?

Lionel: There's no reason that you should. I haven't earned your trust. But you do need me. The knowledge I possess--

Clark: The man I needed is dead because of you. My real dad's heart gave out because of the stress you put him under.

Lionel: I'm sorry it has to be this way son. I really wish we could have done this together. But if you don't submit to Jor-el's will and begin your training, you will never fulfill your destiny.

Lionel pulls out a chunk of meteor rock and holds it over Clark, who falls to the ground in agony.

Clark: I knew I couldn't trust you. You're trying to kill me...again.

Clark tries directing his heat vision at the meteor rock but in his weakened condition, the beams go haywire at first. Eventually, he focuses through the pain and heats up the rock, which severely burns Lionel's hand. As it heats up, it turns black and the effect causes Lionel's body to spasm out of control. Clark begins to see two Lionel's battling each other. The evil Lionel which tormented him throughout his high school years and the good Lionel which tried to help him after they switched bodies. After several minutes, the two Lionels fall unconscious on the floor. Clark picks up the "good" Lionel and superspeeds him to Smallville medical and then superspeeds back to deal with the bad one, just as the police arrive. The police revive and arrest the evil Lionel for assault and battery on Clark.

Winner: Clark Kent

(Brainiac vs. Linda Lake)

Linda: I know who you are professor.

Milton Fine: Excuse me young lady? Are you a student here?

Linda: Don't play dumb with me. I've been watching you. You're not even human. You cooperate with me, and I promise you're secret is safe. You don't, and all of the skeletons in your closet become page one material.

Milton Fine: What is it that you think you know about me Miss Lake?

Linda: That black ship. The two aliens who attacked all of those police officers after the second meteor shower. I know it ALL. I was there. In fact, that was the day I received my own gift.

Milton Fine: Gift? The ability to turn yourself into water and spy on people? You've got to be kidding me. You are nothing more than a petty annoyance. A hack gossip columnist. Quite frankly, you bore me.

Linda: Let's just see how "bored" you are after I complicate your life. If you want to masquerade as a human, then you're going to have to do a lot more to protect your image. Image is everything.

Milton Fine: Image? Like this image?

Brainiac shape-shifts into Linda Lake and begins mocking the sound of her voice.

Milton Fine: Or how about this one?

Brainiac shape-shifts into Linda's editor at the Daily Planet, then "fires" her.

Milton Fine: I can be whoever I want young lady. You go right ahead and ruin Milton Fine's reputation. I can have a whole new identity tomorrow. This is a battle you can't win and frankly, unwise to even attempt to fight.

Linda Lake: I wonder what your alien farm boy student might say if he knew his professor---

Milton Fine: You know about Kal-el? How?

Linda Lake: I see everything. I hear everything. Face it, I own you.

Milton Fine makes an aggressive move towards Linda and she instantly transforms into water an envelops him. Fine shrugs her off and her liquid body splatters all over the classroom wall. She reforms as human, on the floor, dazed and confused.

Milton Fine: You see, I know about you too young lady. Your weakness is my strength.

He appears over her with taser and fires it into her body, which begins to seizure. Unable to shape-shift into water again, Fine picks up her limp body and snaps her neck, effortlessly. He uses his heat vision to disintegrate her body into ash.

The next day, Linda Lake appears briefly at the Daily Planet to personally submit her letter of resignation to her editor there. As she leaves the building, we see "her" shape-shift back into Milton Fine.

Whoa, those are pretty impressive scenes, Jason. You should be a scriptwriter for the actual show -- you really understand how those different characters speak! Okay, I'll try to be as creative, but that might be a little tricky this late at night...

Clark Kent vs. Lionel Luthor

"Clark?" Lionel stepped hesitantly into the barn, his feet crunching on the loose pieces of hay and straw that littered the ground. It was probably the first time that he'd done anything with any hesitation. "Clark, are you here? I have... a message for you. One of true importance." Lionel's eyes narrowed and flickered up toward the loft. Had he seen something? A hint of movement? His fingers drifted absently toward lower pocket of his expensive suit coat, but he stopped himself mid-motion. "It's a message that could very well change your destiny."

"And you'd know all about destiny, wouldn't you, Lionel? Or is it Jor-El? Or any of your other personalities or guises you've adopted over the years? I thought you died the day your son pushed you out of your office window at Luthorcorp Tower, but I should've known that a Luthor wouldn't be so vulnerable," Clark's voice came from directly over his shoulder.

Trying to appear unaffected by Clark's sudden appearance, Lionel nevertheless took a half-step backwards and a quick gulp of air. "Ah... yes. My unfortunate descent -- my one-way ticket to a splattered glory on the pavement of the plaza I'd spent a lifetime building... Yes, I, too, thought it had all ended there. But apparently your father had other plans in mind. In the moment of my passing, his... essence... flooded into my body. It remained dormant, waiting, always biding its time... preserving me in a seemingly lifeless state until I could make good my escape back to the land of the living." Lionel paced around the confines of the barn, running his hand along a saw horse and then brushing his fingers together to rid them of the dust and wood shavings they'd acquired. Even out of his element, Clark saw him as a threat -- dangerous as a caged panther waiting to strike. And if Jor-El had truly taken hi on again as his vessel...

"Why did you return? Jor-El never acts directly without a cost. He must want something out of you. What price did you have to pay for your new lease on life, Lionel? Or did someone else have to pay it for you? The last I knew, my father had been destroyed when the Fortress went dark, consumed by Brainiac."

"The Brain Interactive Construct could not destroy your father's work any more than Lex could mine. You should know by now, son, that a father's legacy is far more pervasive than their children could ever realize."

"And what kind of a legacy do you think you've left in your death?" Clark stepped forward, eyeing Lionel suspiciously, inconspicuously using his x-ray vision to search the elder Luthor for any sign of betrayal. A small metal box rested inside a pocket of his coat, the lining of which he could not see through -- he knew instantaneously that it was lead, and, as a result, what must be inside.

"It's not my legacy that you should be concerned about, son, but your own."

"I'm not your son -- and you're not my father. The only father I had gave his life to protect me from the likes of you! And Jor-El has rarely done anything more but test me and put me through countless trials!"

"But your trials are what make you stronger, Clark! They're what makes you come to fully accept your Kryptonian heritage!" Lionel closed the gap between the pair in mere seconds, clasping his hands around Clark's forearms, his impassioned face a mere foot from Clark's.

Clark wrested his arms free, smoothing the wrinkles from the sleeves of his red jacket. He turned on his heel and stepped back to the door of the barn, gazing out at the stars. "I may have come from another planet," he conceded, "but if there's one thing my true parents taught me, it's that my powers and my alien origin have shaped who I now know I'll one day become, but it's their human influence -- my humanity, adopted though it may be, that is truly the most precious part of me, the part that gives my life meaning. That's what I call true strength."

"And it's what I've come to know as one of your greatest weaknesses. Unfortunately, I've also brought along the other as well," Lionel plucked the lead container from his pocket, producing a small shard of meteor rock which he closed in his palm, advancing on Clark with a sudden ferocity that he wasn't prepared for. He chided himself for turning his back on Lionel at exactly the wrong time, but Clark wasn't entirely unprepared. Deciding to try a trick he'd only briefly considered before, he dropped to his knees and did a forward somersault as he began to feel his strength become sapped by the Kryptonite. With every ounce of power left in his body, he leapt skyward, a jump that was weaker than he could usually perform, but which still took him clear over the farmhouse and into the adjoining field, the one which had once been emblazoned with the fiery symbol that stood for "Crusade," when Jor-El had first brainwashed him into taking on an emotionless, cold Kryptonian personality.

"Looks like another of his crusades is about to end prematurely, along with Lionel's," he vowed. Feeling his body become filled with renewed vigor, he dashed back along the fence at a speed that was more than just a blur, yanking one of the fence posts from its place in the earth. He then dashed back to the other entrance to the barn, flinging the plank of wood with such force and accuracy that it crashed into the back of Lionel's legs, causing the rest of him to slam facefirst into the wall. Lionel Luthor dropped to the dirt like a stone, the piece of kryptonite he'd held flailing from his hand and out into the tall grass outside.

Clark stood over his unconscious form, and said, "No more of your games, Jor-El, and no more of your machinations, Lionel. My destiny is my own to claim, and soon... I believe I will finally be ready."


Ooookay, and on to the second round. It'll be a little shorter due to sleepiness.

Brainiac vs. Linda Lake

(Note: This takes place sometime between the events in "Instinct.")
Linda Lake's fingers tapped furiously on the keys of her keyboard in her tiny, cramped corner office of the Metropolis Inquisitor. She couldn't believe she'd had to sink so low as to accept a position at such a tabloid rag, but beggars couldn't be choosy, and ever since she'd had to swim in the sewers after a run-in with Lana Lang's SUV, she'd had to do more than her fair share of begging, cajoling, bribing, and occasional murder to get what she wanted. Soon, she'd have all the evidence that she needed to print her story of a lifetime... the biography of one elusive Red-Blue Blur: "Mr. Clark Kent," she read his name aloud in a low whisper, tapping the cap of her pen against her smirking lips.

"Now there's a name I haven't heard in a while... at least not in this form," came an vaguely familiar voice from over her shoulder. "But what do you know about a farmboy from Smallville, Kansas who is now a successful reporter for your biggest rival, the Daily Planet?"

She swiveled in her chair to face the newcomer -- a petite, attractive blond woman whose steely grey-black eyes were the only truly off-putting thing about her otherwise comely appearance. "And just what do you think you have on Mr. Kent that I don't... Miss Sullivan?" she drifted off, waiting for the girl's response. "Oh, that's right. You know more about Clark than I ever would, even with my spying and snooping. It must go with the territory of being the alien's best friend, huh?"

"Actually, I like to sometimes go by a different name nowadays," the other girl shrugged impassively as she stepped forward, her hands clasped behind her, her voice holding a dangerous edge that Linda had never noticed before. And there was something about her face... not just the eyes, now, she reflected, but a blank, mechanical lifelessness to her features that made her wonder, for a moment, if there was more, too, to Chloe Sullivan that meets the eye. "You can call me Brainiac. But we're not here to exchange pleasantries."

"Oh, no, apparently we're just here to inflate your already super-sized ego and have pointless conversations. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a deadline to keep here, and the story of the century about ready to go to print."

"I wouldn't do that if I were you. Besides, I may be able to make things worth your while if you simply do me one small favor."

"And what favor would I possibly be interested in granting you?" Linda asked, confused by the unusual turn this conversation was taking.

"You've kept your eyes and ears on Kal-El for months, closer to him through your time spend in drain pipes and sewage grates than even this human vessel has."

"Kal-El? Human what? And what do you mean, I spend my time in drain pipes and -- ?!"

"Let's not play games, Miss Lake," Chloe continued in the same dangerous, yet deadly calm voice. "I know all about your water-morphing capabilities, as you well know from your last encounter with the human whose skin I'm wearing. I just need to look into your personal files for one piece of information -- the secure location in which a certain... object is being hidden. Something I desperately need to fulfill my directive. And you can either assist me willingly in my quest, or things may have to become a bit... unpleasant for you."

"Are you threatening me?" Linda's eyebrows arched is amusement.

"No. I am giving you your final warning," the Chloe who was clearly NOT herself grinned darkly, and fast as lightning dashed forward to wrap Linda Lake's neck in the vise-like grip of her arm, putting her in a headlock and cutting off her air supply. "Now, shall I do this quick and painlessly, or slow and -- ?" She was cut off as Linda's body collapsed into a puddle of liquid that just as quickly flung itself at the ceiling like a geyser, and then came spraying out of the sprinkler heads as Chloe stared upwards, looking somewhat bemused but not surprised.

"Foolish woman... as though her disappearance would make the slightest difference, even if it is most likely a diversion. Chloe stepped forward, placing her hand on the the computer workstation Linda had been seated at, feeling the data within it flowing into her mind effortlessly, or into Brainiac's mind, in all truthfulness, as the digital entity was now fully in control of her faculties. Sifting through Linda Lake's files and then hacking into a secure Luthorcorp database that the nosy reporter herself had stumbled upon just that same day, she found exactly what she'd been looking for. "So that's where Tess Mercer is hiding the Crystal of Knowledge. Procuring it for the next phase of my plans will not be the least bit difficult."

Suddenly, Brainiac felt his human host's body begin to convulse. The nanites he'd infused in her system became temporarily jumbled and disrupted as water coursed through her bloodstream and wreaked havoc on her insides. Frantically, he safe-locked the location of the crystal in a safe location in Chloe's mind, then used a low-level mental pulse to thrust the watery meteor freak from her in a choking, gagging spray of liquid from her mouth. Grasping the nearest electrical outlet, Brainiac pulled it free of the wall, and pressed it against Linda Lake's side as she reappeared in her prone human form. Her body shook, then went rigid, and then still as the electricity temporarily negated her powers and knocked her unconscious.

"Now, to end this," Brainiac said darkly, reaching Chloe's hand toward Linda Lake's brain, hoping to erase all her thoughts and leave her an empty shell. But just then, a flurry of voices of other reporters could be heard just around the corner, following the ruckus they'd made. "Another time, then," Brainiac said, standing, and then dashing down the hallway, knowing that Linda Lake's defeat was only a taste of the fate that would soon await her...

Chloe stepped onto the front steps of the Inquisitor, blinking in the harsh sunlight. What was she doing here? And why was she all soaked? Was this more evidence of the danger Brainiac posed, which Clark had been warning her about repeatedly as of late? She couldn't worry about that now... all she knew was that she had to get to a certain warehouse... though again, she didn't have a clue as to why.

Winners: Clark Kent and Brainiac -- and I made up a way of explaining what happened to the Crystal and who stole it from Tess, woo-hoo!

Well folks, it's finally here. From 32 contestants down to 2. Our championship matchup: Clark Kent vs. Brainiac. Winner-take-all. Be creative but most of all VOTE! As always, Jason will go first...

(Clark vs. Brainiac)

We begin in the loft on the Kent Farm. It's the evening and Clark has brought some work from the Daily Planet home with to a place where he feels comfortable. Despite all of the good he's been able to do as the Red-Blue blur in Metropolis, he's been feeling a bit home sick lately. Even if nobody else is there with him, there's no place he'd rather be than home on the farm. Just then...

<voice calling from inside the house>: Claaark, dinner's ready!

Clark: ?!!? Mom? How? What's going on?

Clark superspeeds to the kitchen where he finds Martha putting the finishing touches on pot roast.

Clark: Mom, I thought you were in Washington. When did you get home? How--

Before Clark can finish questioning his mother, Jonathan Kent enters the kitchen from the living room. He's hot and sweaty and covered in grease.

Jonathan: Hey Clark, can you give me a hand with the tractor before dinner? I promise it won't take more than a second.

Clark: DAD!

Clark superspeeds to Jonathan's side and embraces him in a bear hug.

Jonathan: Whoa whoa son, you're acting like you haven't seen me in years!

Clark: I haven't. Dad, you're supposed to be...supposed to be...dead.

Jonathan: Clark, I'm fine. Where is all of this coming from? Are you feeling OK?

Martha enters the living room from the kitchen and joins the conversation.

Martha: I noticed it too Jonathan. He said I was supposed to be in Washington!

Jonathan: Washington? Why?

Clark: She took your senate seat dad...after you um. Died. And that turned into a position in the U.S. Senate shortly after.

Martha: Senator? Me? Clark I bake apple pies!

Clark: But you're not SUPPOSED to bake apple pies!

Just then, there's a knock at the door. Jonathan walks over and lets the visitor in.

Martha: Alicia sweetie, I'm so glad you could make for dinner!

Clark: But mom...dad. You guys can't stand Alicia! Wait a minute. Something's going on here...

Clark turns quickly and fires his heat vision at Alicia. Alicia falls to the ground, covering her face.

Martha: CCCLLLAAARRRRKKK!!! What are you doing? For God's sake stop!

Clark: You're not Alicia. Alicia's dead too. And if she WAS here, she would have teleported before those beams came anywhere NEAR her. WHO ARE YOU?

The would-be Alicia rises to her feet and approaches Clark.

Alicia: Very good Kal-el.

The image of Alicia fades away and reforms into the shape of Milton Fine, AKA Brainiac. The images of Martha and Jonathan do the same. The three Fines turn to Clark and run full speed into him, throttling him and sending him into a crumpled pile on the floor.

Fine: Didn't I tell you they'd all leave you. All betray you? How could you love Alicia when she told your secret to Chloe? You should have accepted my offer the last time I was here. But it's too late for that now. My plans for this planet will go forward. But this time I can't risk your interference. You will die.

Clark <through gritted teeth>: Never! You're a murderer and I will destroy you.

Brainiac: "Destroy me"? You're too much of a coward to kill.

Clark: You're a machine. You're not alive. And I won't let you hurt these people.

Clark rises to his feet. The three Brainiacs merge into one and the two stare each other down. Just then, Clark superspeeds away.

Brainiac: Coward. I always knew you were a coward.

Brainiac superspeeds after Clark. The two finally meet up at the Fortress of Solitude in the Arctic.

Brainiac: You didn't really think you could hide here, did you? I know this place better than you do.

Clark: Good. Then you should know what's coming next.

Clark activates a series of rings which immediately begin spinning.

Brainiac: The Phantom Zone.

Clark: Since I can't really destroy you, I must put you in the one place I know you won't hurt anyone. Forever.

Brainiac: You'll never get me in there Kal-el

Just then, Brainiac feels a violent push from the back, which sends him rushing towards the entrance of the Phantom Zone and inside where he is momentarily frozen, taking in the events on the outside of the zone.

Brainiac: How? I would have seen you coming, even at superspeed.

It then occurs to Brainiac that the image he was talking to was, in fact, a holographic Clark. The "real" Clark stood in waiting and pushed him inside.

Clark: Turn about is fair play, eh Brainiac? If you can trick me, then I can trick you. Enjoy your stay.

Clark pushes a button on the Fortress wall and the floor beneath Brainiac's feet disappears, sending him racing downward.

Brainiac: NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Winner: Clark Kent

I actually have an idea that may make things interesting for the next time I do this. I may have each of the four brackets be a different show. Like Smallville would be one. Maybe the Sarah Connor Chronicles could be another...
