View Full Version : Erica Durance's Performance in Infamous

Did anyone get blown away by Erica Durance in this episode? The scene in the barn with Clark just blew me away! Erica has this way of making Lois very vulnerable and she does it so easily. One moment you see Lois being her typical self (hard, emotionally secure, bossy, sarcastic, snarky) and then in the next moment you see her being incredibly open and vulnerable. Erica Durance is an amazing actress.

It's flawless to me in that she so precisely portrays what we as people go through with our relationships. We all try to be this big, independent, take-no-crap attitude type of person...but all we really want is a little love you know? Erica Durance does this perfectly. Also, she's kinda cute.

Anything Erica Durance // Lois Lane just gets my gears turning. I'm the typical person who grew up, and devoted to Lois Lane. I just think she, well, in my own opinion, is just the thing that gets "Smallville" going right again and again. I just love her to death! We need more Lois. We really have to see both of Lois and Clark get their chemistry more profound.
Again, anything with Lois Lane and Erica Durance, in it, always makes me smile.

ED has a total and complete grasp on Lois and it shows in every scene. She did amazing. She locked S9 and I garuntee every episode she's in for the rest of the season will prove it.

She blew me away. She was better in Committed, but she was still outstanding. She has got to be the most natural, comfortable of all the cast. She plays Lois Lane to a T. And she is great at interaction with the other actors.

Erica was really good i could feel her pain when she talking to Clark in the barn.
I thought Erica was just wonderful in this one.Her expressions were great in the DP of the reveal of the secret. But what really got me was the barn scene, she brought a really nice sense of vulnerability to Lois.I think the other time we've seen that was in Siren. Her scene in the Talon with Clark repeatedly blows me away.Another instance of an absolutely amazing Erica Durance performance that was in this season was Bloodline. That will always be on the top of her best performances and overall episodes.I can proudly say that I've never liked Lois as much as in this season. She was always an enjoyable character, with her impectable comedic timing. But something about her this season has just made Lois better in my eyes.

Wow.
Up until this episode, I've been die-hard Clana. I find them to be epic and tragic, but after this episode, I find Clois to be completely iconic.
That's in part to the way that Erica plays Lois in contrast to Kristin's Lana.
Erica brings a maturity to Lois Lane that makes her interactions with Clark so much more adult and refreshing. She's incredibly secure, where Lana was the epitome of insecure. Lois is also vulnerable, and I thinkt that personal security and vulerability make for a much stronger character than plain insecurity.
Her one line, "I understand" was so, illuminating and she played it wit the upmost subtlety and maturity it broke my heart.
The writers always tried to make Lana this strong, female leader hero type character, but in this episode Erica had that down pat.
Consider me a Lois and Clois fan :)

Clark did not see a weaker Lois Lane. He saw the strong Lois Lane. He saw her dust off her real emotions, STEP UP, and PROTECT herself. Lois Lane is not made a fool by anyone, and she's NOT going to LAY DOWN like Chloe, Lana, or Alicia to be made a fool of by Clark. If CLARK doesn't like her, SHE'S GONE. She told that to him. She's better. He saw that.
I misunderstand how anyone can percieve that as weaker.

I know, I shaved off the best part of your post. But, I thank you for recognizing the care, concern, and bravo for which ED plays Lois Lane. She understands the character and fights for it in a way that's 'special'. It goes beyond page, beyond screen and into the hearts and minds of viewers.
Kudos. And, I too, can appreciate the insecure, niave, beautiful, tragedy that was Clana. I don't hate it. I enjoy it, but ED makes me LOVE clois and I think you articulated that effect very well.

Her performances have been absolutely spectacular. Bloodline, Committed and now this have been fantastic. Her range is amazing. She is very natural and organic. I knew that her comedic instincts were gold but the stuff she has been doing this season are unbelievable. She can be angry, raging, soft, loving, funny, scared, shocked and even evil with a special flair. She is so intense.

Erica's performance tonight was breathtaking. She has this ability to draw you in to every scene she is in by showing a delicate balance of strength and vulnerability that makes you want to cheer for her and cry for her simultaneously. You could truly see her connection to the character and the material as she went from comedic scenes, to action scenes, to romantic scenes.
I have missed her tremendously these past few months, and I couldn't have asked for a better return for Lois in terms of the dedication to the role that Erica demonstrated this evening. I know I'm gushing, but Erica truly rates as one of the best actresses ever to portray the character of Lois Lane in any medium, in my opinion. Therefore, it would be nice if I could see more of her next year, and not have to wait months to see her grace my television screen.

Seriously, I loved her performance. She knocked it out of the park.

I have to agree. No one shoot me, but I actually thought the majority of the acting performances were really off tonight, and I usually like everyone. Everything felt forced and several of the lines were just delivered poorly, almost uncaring? Except of course Sam Witwer, who was just utterly brilliant in this (AM too when she was reacting off of him).
But ED did look like she was trying too hard at times and some of her lines came off unnatural. She's definitely had better episodes. Though her performance was nothing compared to Tori Spelling's. What a horrible performance, and that first scene with Clark? I was cringing. Tom Welling also seemed a little off his game here. The whole thing was just weird. :( I mean, even the extras with small lines were bad. Could have partially been the dialogue, and directing certainly comes into play.

I thought Durance was great, but I don't think her strongest moments were the really emotional scenes. Not because they were bad - they were really well-performed and gut wrenching. But Durance's strong suit is her comedy - and that scene where she locks Clark in the copy room and turns to him with a raised eyebrow was just everything Lois Lane should be.
I think Durance's vulnerable optimism is also amazing - which is why scenes like the Siren "When I can hang out with you" line or the Bride near kiss stick out for people. Chloe tends to wear her heart on her sleeve - and we see Mack deliver these moments often (and she's wonderful at it) - but it's a rare treat to get them out of Lois, and Durance always pulls them off.

But Durance's strong suit is her comedy
ITA I think her talent does lie in comedy. I can think of a couple of scenes that were fun to watch like in Siren when she said the line about Ollie keeping his quiver in the closet.

ITA that Erica Durance was Amazing tonight! Yes, she was convincingly desperate and determined in "Committed", and she can do 'frantic' right up there with Allison, and 'scared' right up there with Kristin, but Erica can Do 'Poignant' like few others, IMO. She was Dynamic and deeply sincere as a true Lois Lane should be, and I can't appreciate her performance enough in "Infamous". I really Missed her, and I'm so glad she's back, (...but not next week - already - again!)

Erica Durance is the best actor on this show. The only one I think that even approaches her is Sam Witwer. She has all the ranges. Sarcastic, Dramatic, emotional, comedic. She knows how to give spunk and attitude, but can just as easily give off vunerabilty. She brings energy and life to EVERY scene she's in. She's must-see TV. We'll see who wins that best actress award at the end of the season this time.

Erica was absolutely fantastic last night.
My personal favorite moment was the sad yet understanding "Clark...I understand" when he told her he wouldn't tell her his secret again.
ITA.
That, and…
“But this……..THIS was different.”
The way she delivered this line in such a decisive manner with her determined expression……… just blew me away and left me speechless. The whole conversation at barn moved me greatly but maybe I shouldn’t say ‘conversation’, because I wasn’t impressed at all by Tom’s performance here. Or maybe it was his lines which makes me want to hit him with a kryptonite stuffed frozen chicken.
But anyway, I’d like to say kudos to Erica. Boy I love her Lois. More. And. More.

Erica by herself is the reason why I gave Infamous a 10. Hello?! Comic, dramatic, romantic, sexy, vulnerable, poignant, pugnacious, action; she embodies Lois Lane. Her line delivery is great and I loved her laugh and all the little exclamations she was making prior to and during Clark yet again showing off in front of Lois. The snarky dialogue with Clark and Linda and her "hell, no" had me grinning like a mad fiend at the oh so Lois Lane-ness of her and then her scenes in the barn and the cafe had me welling up just like in Committed.
Jeph Loeb called it: Erica Durance IS Lois Lane. This season is starting to make me think that despite my not really liking favoritism, I might just have to say that Erica has convinced me that she is my personal favorite Lois Lane.

Erica was freaking amazing!
Consider me a Lois and Clois fan

Just when I think ED can't get any better, she totally blows me away in this episode.
Yep!
"But this, this was different" just had me. Her eyes were pleading with him to give them a chance. The barn scene was a highlight of the episode, for me.
I liked her acting choices in the last scene, too. Lois was in public but she had to conceal her devastation. She wouldn't allow herself even to tear up. Her walls were up and at the ready.
Erica was a delight. She rocked in all her scenes.

ED's acting has always impressed me. She has comedic timing, pathos, sincerity and subtlety. She is underused in this show and when given the right material she proves that she's as good as any of the other SV veterans.

It was meh at best. She was trying way too hard. And when she was supposed to be sad it was really hard to watch not because it was heart wrenching but because it was just not good, IMO.

I like this, Erica is great with her eyes. And her voice, the way she says things can pull you in. In Committed, her "yes" alone was a great moment in this series. Given the right scenes, dialogue and screen time, she can prove to be one of the most skilled on this show, ever.
With her great acting, she could have hung up there with Rosenbaum and Glover had she ever had any great scenes with them.

I think PS3 know they hit a gold mine with Erica, which is why she gets amazing material to play when she's in an episode. She has incredible range as an actress because she can do funny, action, emotional, mad, serious....everything. Give her a script and she hits it out of the ballpark. And I think a big reason she plays Lois so well is because she cares as much about her as the Lois fans do. She IS a Lois fan herself. When you hear her talk about her character and how she approaches Lois, it becomes very clear why she plays her so well.

^^^ Yes. That's the really cool thing about Erica Durance, like her fans she adores Lois Lane, and that's a bit rare for actors (to actually love the characters they play). She has knowledge of Lois Lane and Superman and uses that when she plays the role.
Also in an interview Erica said she loves Lois Lane because she's such a strong woman and that Lois reminds Erica of her own mother. Sigh. I really adored her after that. Mothers are such important people and in our society they tend to work so hard and get so little recognition.
I found it very sweet that Erica brought up her mother and the influence that her love for her mother brings to her performance as Lois Lane. :o

After the writers practically killed the future Superman with their pens, in Power and Requiem, the only reason I couldn't stop watching was because of Erica's return as Lois Lane.
Erica Durance and Tom welling have such amazing on screen chemistry that I had to see how it could possibly work with Lois and Clark. As far as I'm concerned ED together with TW resuscitated Smallville in Infamous.
Seriously, Erica Durance needs to be in all 22 of S9 alongside Tom Welling, so we can see: 1) how he progresses towards maturity as a man while he works to become Superman and 2) how Lois becomes his one true love.
Is that really too much to ask????????

The extras were horrible. It made me believe that even I could be paid to be on television.
Tori Spelling was horrible. She made her character so two-dimensional and her make-up was too overdone. In that scene with Lois in the elevator with her beige lipstick, I was like, "Linda looks like she has clown make-up on."
Tom seemed off but I heard he may have been sick, and that seems really believable to me. He looked pale and acted pretty flat.
Allison was great as usual, but Chloe is constantly written as a Mary Sue. Allison works her magic despite bad writing.
Sam Witwer was just amazing. Enough said.
I thought Erica was great as usual. I got the impression that she was overdoing it in the barn scene with Clark but when I put myself in her shoes, I think the situation warranted extreme emotion and it was actually Tom that was off.
He just seemed to be totally emotion-less like, "Uh, whatever you say Lois. You're special." Hello!!??!! She just found out you are not only the RBB, but an alien, she was just shot at by the feds, and you are now under attack from all sides.

This poll lets you see who is voting and it seems that most people voting "no" are actually Chloe fans, not Lana fans.
Either way, whoever is voting "no" has a right to do that. Everyone has their opinions and their biases.
With that said, true talent cannot be missed and this poll is clear proof that people have really warmed up to Erica Durance and that she has grown immensely as an actress. I've never another poll that was quite so one-sided (on the positive side, of course) where close to 300 people were blown away by someone's acting on Smallville. That's an incredible feat by Erica Durance, not to mention that she even managed to get some rave reviews from non-Lois/Clois fans and even managed to convert some non-fans into fans of hers with this episode.
So let people vote against her performance if they want. That doesn't take away from her obvious talent and from the growing appeal that her character is garnering. :)

I really can`t get you point of view, but it`s your right...I personaly don`t think KK is a great actress, not bad, but not very good...
And about Erica.....I can`t even find a good words to describe Erica`s brilliant acting in Infamous (I like all her scenes, I don`t remember she was bad)...She makes every scene she is in unforgettable and amazing...she makes air around her becomes electric and viewers can feel it and all her emotions that minute and nothing else just not existed... She is SO Lois Lane, the best ever (I saw them all)...If she will in all episodes of season 9- it certainly WON`T be bad... I just wish Tom was as great as she was in the barn scene (but if he was sick...it makes sense)
The last scene was played terrific by her and Tom (I liked him very much in this scene)...so much chemistry...WOW!!!!:p

Now this is even more phenomenal! A performance that can turn someone toward the Clois ship!
It did me too, though I was a Lolliepopper who was really starting to like Clark this season so it was probably not so amazing that I really got into the romantic aspect of Clois episode.
Although I really liked Tom Welling a whole freaking bunch in that last scene! So it wasn't just Erica that made me dig the Clois, but Tom as well. So if he's that 'bad' when he's sick, we should all be so lucky to be so 'bad'
Damn that last scene was good!
I won't say I'm ready to start actively shipping Clois though.
Erica did really well here, I always enjoy her kicking the crap out of people. I think she is one of the more realistic fighters on the show. It isn't a showy kind of fighting but something that is a lot more like what an average person who has become pretty talented at kick boxing could do, plus it didn’t just come out nowhere it was something that has been a part of her character since the second episode we ever saw her in.
But I agree with whoever said that because Lois is usually such a hard a** it makes it that much more of a treat to see her vulnerable. I do like how Erica never lost her "Lois" during her vulnerable moments. She got all in Clark's face "Then fight back!" despite the fact that she cares about him. Then when she read his text she started to get weepy and then angrily shook her head at herself. Lois in any medium has always been a woman that puts on a brave face even if she isn't always feeling so brave. (though she does have a lot of brass though)
"This . . . this was different!" That was really a well delivered line because she put the emphasis where it needed to be and the emotion never fell flat through that whole scene.
But what impressed me from both Tom and Erica was the scene at the end. Where they didn't have any dialogue at all to fall back on and where their faces had to tell the story and they did that phenomenally well. I was so engrossed for that whole scene. I felt their pain and that is a rare thing.
I loved Erica the most though when she was giving Clark a hard time in the first time-line, especially where she laughed in his face at his confession.

What did she mean when she said, "When you first told me, I thought...anybody but Clark. And not because of the whole alien thing."
--I Don't get it. She said this right after discussing how people go their whole lives to stand out and be special...so, my best guess is that Lois is saying she was surprised to see how special Clark was in that he was a hero...not special as in "alien."
I think it could've been written more clearly, but what do you guys think? Was she saying she was surprised he was a "special/hero"?

lol - it was particularly impressive considering the script was working against her. Caroline Dries' incomprehensible dialogue ensured I had no idea what the hell Lois was talking about, but the scene still resonated for me emotionally because of Erica's performance.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the dialogue was bad in that particular scene.

THIS is why Erica won best actress. She's simply very talented and her talent shone through this season. The poll is a great indicator and the vast, vast majority believe that Erica is a good actress.
