Anybody else have flashes of him doing the same thing for his dad and for Lionel? I thought it was a nice touch.
Also seemed to be very sad Lex was gone, even with Lex having just taken Lana away from him. A brief but reflective moment of their friendship....

I was expecting to see flashbacks of how they used to be friends.

I would like to see Clark looking at Lex's picture, just like Oliver did. It would be an awesome scene...

I think they should have used flashbacks of their friendship.

I thought the same thing. This scene was the one that almost brought tears to my eyes. Even though Lex was Clark's enemy, he had been his friend first. To see him die must have been hard.

Have they ever done flashbacks before? I was hoping he would at least stumble upon a picture of him and Lex in the loft or something. I think they could have spent some more time with it....but, I also think they did the Lex/Clark confrontation in last season's finale way too rushed too, so I guess I'm not too surprised.

Clark does that at funerals to. He did it for Alicia as well. It's his way of saying rest in peace.

they showed a quick flashback a couple of seasons ago when Lana was sleeping and she dreamt about Clark saving her in the twister back in season 2s premiere.

I liked it. It was really sad.

That part was really beautiful, especially with how sad Clark looked. He looked like he was saying goodbye to Lex's memory. You know, like he was saying goodbye, not to the man that Lex had become, but to the friend that he had lost.
It was powerful since Chloe mentioned in this episode "Clark, Lex is not the same man that you rescued from that car crash eight years ago" or something to that extent so I wonder if Clark was having flashback in his mind when they used to be friends.

I thought that it was a nice touch, kinda saying that even though Lex is evil he still cares for him and remembers the way that they used to be.

I loved it.
"Requiem" as a title for the most part was in relation to Clark and Lana, but it also reflected on Clark and Lex, Luthorcorp, etc. Truly a well penned episode.
However, had they done flashbacks, it would have detracted from the Clark and Lana which was the main essence of the episode.
But the ashes were a nice touch.

Flashbacks did not even cross my mind, but I think they would of been an awesome touch. If anything the Clark/Lex friendship on this show was the most interesting part, I always wished they could of stretched their friendship longer.

True. But to me an end to Lex/Clark is more important then Clark/Lana..

OK it actually would have been sad and powerful if it wasnt so obvious lex can't be dead so it was jsut stupid

I think the writers are insulting our intelligence as an audience thinking that we would accept Lex being dead. Any fan of the Superman story knows that Lex obviously can't be dead yet. He is too vital to the future of the story. I can already see them using the same excuse for Lex coming back to life that they did with Lana after the S6 finale. The remains in the truck will be from a clone.
I think that if they really wanted to sell Lex being dead, there needed to be more added to the scene. Just seeing Clark sadly drop the ashes didn't leave enough of an emotional impact.
If I was the editor cutting this episode, I would have shown Clark approaching the ashes. Then cut to a flashback sequence starting with the Hug conversation where Clark asks Lex if they will ever end up hating each other, and Lex says their friendship will be the stuff of legend. You cut back to Clark at the truck and superimpose a few other Clex friendly moments over Clark, cut away from Clark to the end of Covenant with the first Clex breakup, a few other moments of dialogue, and then some tension to show the downfall. Then you cut back to Clark saying a few words about Lex and their relationship as he lets the ashes fall.
I think it would have been better to get the Clana loft scene out of the way first and after Clark says "I love you" you cut to Clark approaching the ashes and ending the episode with the Clex ashes segment as I depicted.

I was sad they didn't use flashbacks of their friendship. I didn't cry, but I might have if we got flashbacks during that scene. I thought it was very sad that Clark still sprinkled the dirt even after what Lex had just done to him. For me it was the only good part of the episode because it showed Clark's remorse for an old friend.

That was a really good moment. I TOO think they should've shown us some flashbacks -- highlights of the highs and lows that Clark and Lex have gone through during Smallville. However, perhaps the fact that they DIDN'T do those flashbacks is more proof that Lex IS still alive, and they're waiting for MR's agreement to eventually return. *crosses fingers*
