That talk in the barn before Chloe's wedding would have been it. Any further appearances would have been as Clark's ex. Everything else from "Bride" on would have reinforced Clark's decision not to resume the relationship.

Granted, there were some things that were kind of ridiculous these past few episodes...
however,
there were several good things that came out of it.
Such as Chloe getting Brainiac-free and having her memory restored.

I think that ending would have just made it even more ridiculous, In my opinoin
