I'm offended! Maxima wasn't a villain, she was just misunderstood! All she wanted was someone to love and to call her own! After all, she even apologized to Jimmy! C'mon, stop the hate against the hottest chick to ever appear on Smallville!
(I'd do anything to meet the actress, man. Anything!!! :D)

... and how can you put Pursuader on the list? All he's done so far is crack a few of Clark's ribs with an axe.. and was gone a few moments later - less than 6minutes of screentime. O_o
Yeah, I agree. Maxima is not a villain. She is misunderstood.

I reiterate: she even apologized to Jimmy. As a general rule of thumb, villains don't apologize for.. you know.. villainous behavior.. so I don't see her as a villain. I honestly don't.
Yeah but she did throw a car a Lois.

I like Mxyzptlk and his power of pursuasion. He was kind of cheap
on Smallville, but I'm sure that he gets stronger as time goes on.
He was always a great challenge for Superman.

Is Mxyzptlk coming back? Because he's not dead and didn't end up in Belle Reeve. Is he in 33.1 or something?

For all of the supervillains and FOTW's on this show, one of the best villains was Phaelon from S1's Rogue. Based solely on his street-smarts and intellect, he was able to terrorize Clark and his way of life. Most FOTW's would come after Clark head on with powers, and in the end Clark would always defeat them. However, since Phaelon was human, Clark couldn't justify using his powers to hurt him, and Clark had to rely more on his mind to get out of it.
You rarely see someone get under Clark's skin like Phaelon did. Clark has always been about not killing at any cost. However, with Phaelon he was on the brink.

Lex for sure just because he was such a complex character, you could love him and hate him at the same time, and for so long he fooled everyone. I think Lionel should have been added to the list as well, he was very bad for the longest and even until the end he confused me with his personality, i loved it. I do love Brainiac as well just cuz he never died lol and he definitely caused a lot of problems

I don't see how this is even a contest. Lex is Superman's ultimate nemesis, and Michael Rosenbaum has portrayed an extremely multifaceted and interesting villain since day one. I admit that I hesitate for a couple of seconds over the name of Brainiac, just because he's caused so much havoc in multiple story arcs, but for many of those moments, he relied in some way, shape, or form on Lex also being involved in the plot, and we all know that it's Lex who will eventually have the title of Clark's worst enemy (if he doesn't have it already).

How could it be anyone but Lex Luthor? For seventy years, he's been Superman's Number One Villain. The smartest man in the world, the planning-est man in the world, someone who thinks ahead (unlike a certain BDA we know) and has counters to every counter - that's Lex Luthor.
What's great about the show has been the presence of Lex from the beginning. First a friend, then a man who has a choice - he can be inspired by Clark and choose the right path. And then Lex deliberately makes the choice to be evil.
The last two seasons have had some silliness and repetition, but the basic story is there. A friend turned enemy. Those are the worst kind, for they know you well.
And Clark is always regretful of what might have been. They were good friends through the first three seasons. Then Clark finds out that Lex has been spying on him and has a "Clark room". He gives Lex another chance all through season four. Then, in the beginning of season five, Lex sends the meteor mutants after Clark, and what's more important to Clark, Clark's family (whatever that second or third episode of season five is called, the one where Clark doesn't have his powers.) That's what Clark can't forgive, that Lex put Clark's family and friends in danger. He can forgive that Lex is targeting himself, for deep down he knows that Lex has something to be curious about. But putting innocents in the line of fire - Clark cannot forgive, cannot condone that. And that, among other things, is what turns them to enemies.
Clark finds how twisty Lex can be, how determined Lex is to get his own way, to find out, to cross moral lines. There are some lines Clark won't cross, and he's tried to keep Lex from crossing them. And Lex chose to take the step over the line.
Michael Rosenbaum played him so well over the seven seasons. His nuanced portrayal of friend turning to enemy has been excellent. MR will always be the definitive Lex to me.
The other villains are short-term. Clark doesn't really care about them. Lex has been the ultimate villain, because, once, Clark did care.

Lionel in seasons 2 & 3. He was just so evil and was given great character depth.Agreed, Lionel had lex under his thumb, makes him more superior, and there was never a moment Lionel didn't know his thoughts or plans and even manipulated him. Lionel was the most ruthless character that kept everyone guessing what his true intentions were. Lionel is what Lex should've been. I also felt brainiac was one hell of a villian, anyone who can manipulate Lex is his greater. It also helps that the characters were played by great actors.

when deciding who was the best Smallville 'villain' i decided to ignore Superman mythos, and simply look at Smallville. IMO, on the show, Lex's 'villainy' doesn't come close to many others, including his father, and Brainiac
i adore their friendship, and i adore Lex's character on Smallville. i consider it one of the best things to come out of the show. but i don't think i've ever really considered him a 'villain' cause there is always still the element of friendship between them. even when he is in the fortress he is apologetic and stuff... how can i call a villain who says sorry to the hero and calls him a brother, a villain...

I'd say Brainiac just because TPTB for the most part wrote Lex as someone who should be pitied because of his awful childhood. They always portrayed him as the poor woobie that everyone betrayed that's why he turned evil.

Completely agree. MR's portrayal of Lex's transformation was worthy of Emmies and critical acclaim, but I think what matters to him is the work itself, and the fans, and both of those two things were satisfied 100% successfully.
"Smallville"'s portrayal of Lex Luthor is what got me interested in the character in the first place (same with all the other Superman characters) and to me is the definitive version. So much depth yet so much darkness.
"Agreed, Lionel had lex under his thumb, makes him more superior, and there was never a moment Lionel didn't know his thoughts or plans and even manipulated him. Lionel was the most ruthless character that kept everyone guessing what his true intentions were. Lionel is what Lex should've been."
I agree that Lionel was certainly the superior villain in the first few seasons, but that's because Lex wasn't supposed to be a villain by that point. When Lex fully crossed over, he became even more twisted then Lionel ever was.
But to me, Lionel and Lex are a toss-up between who was the better villain. I'd ultimately have to go with Lex because of how three-dimensional and insane he is compared to Lionel's more human evil, but I'd probably give them a tie because of how much depth and dark fun John Glover added to Lionel.

A villain can still feel remorse for his actions and apologize for them. But if they continue to do horrendous things, then that makes them a villain IMO.

Well most likely 33.1 which is something they keep bringing back up and dropping every once in a while. Tess had recruited the young Teen in the second episode to go with her to create a group... now that Oliver and her merged Luthercorp and Queen industries, what is supposed to happen with 33.1 and the people weve seen in the past. I hope they do clarify that for us!

It's not fair to compare someone like Lex, who was in the show for seven season, to villians that were introduced for a single episode. The Persuader had only a couple of minutes of airtime! Clearly Lex and Brainiac are going to top the list, since they have been much more fully developed.
I think there should be a separate poll for one-time villians. In that group, I'd say that the Toyman heads the list, with the little kid who ultimately turned into Bizarro a clsoe second.

02-27-2009, 09:25 PM
well you say seven seasons... but technically for the better part of the show he wasnt a clear cut vilain either. Season 1-2-3 were of him building up form good to bad in a very slow manner.
