View Full Version : Is tonight make-or-break for the rest of the season?

Everyone pretty much agrees that the beginning of season 8 was some of the best stuff to come from Smallville in a few seasons. However, there has been a lot of negativity lately surrounding the Lana arc. Tonight is the last episode for Lana, and PS3 has some wrapping up to do before she is gone.
So the question is, will Requiem be a make or break episode for the rest of this season? Does PS3's wrap up of the Lana arc determine how the rest of this season is recieved by fans?
Personally, I hope they do a great job to wrap this up and set the stage for a great finish to what has been, despite the Lana ordeal, a great season. However, even if I don't like how it is wrapped up, I will still watch and support this show that I love and continue to hope for a season 9!
So, what do you all think?

The Lana arc strated just fine in Bride, with CK acting like a grown up.... It progressed like a nightmare, but let's hope it will end just like it started: with Clark on his feet, not kneeling in front of Lana Lang and her superpowers.

It's definitely make-or-break for me. When a show is all about the journey, episodes like this need to be handled properly or else it could destroy characters going forward.

Whatever happens tonight, I will watch the show. Mistakes can happen, okay we are all angry, frustrated, betrayed....BUT after "requiem", I think things will go right. They will fix it. Everybody has a second chance so...

Um no, lana lang isn't apart of superman's life. if they're pushing clark into the superman role more then every episode with his future wife Lois Lane is a make or break since she is infact the girl he spends his life with. it doesn't matter how they end things with this lana girl since she doesn't matter in superman's story, she's just some high school girlfriend who turned out really screwed up, End of story.

I think that there could possibly be somethings that could make or break some characters this season. But the fact that Lana will be gone is very encouraging.I just hope they do it right. This makes me very excited to see what happenes.

I think that TPTB have had way more than two chances to close this relationship out properly. They don't get any more chances as far as I'm concerned. What happens tonight is it.

Idk, i really don't think one episode can make or break a season.

I think that more people are concerned with how Clana ends then the episode itself. I know that I am one of them. I think what will make or break the rest of the season is how the end of Clana is handled. They set up Clois up in the first half pretty well, only to undo it all with a handful of episodes. I can see it now. This week, Clark and Lana still want to be together but are forced apart by some outside circumstance like Lana having Kryptonite embedded in her skin from the bomb. So we go back to mopey Clark because there was no true closure. Then Clark will develop "feelings" for Lois over the next few eps which will make no sense because not enough time will have passed to make it believeable.
Since the rest of the season is pretty Clois heavy, I am praying that the writers manage to pull off a miracle and end Clana successfully somehow.

It's make or break in the terms of me being a devoted viewer and fan. I don't think anything would ever make me completely quit watching. But I gotta say if this doesn't end well tonight; I will definitely lose that excitement and anticipation I get Thursday mornings knowing my favorite show is on that night.

I don't think that tonights episode we be make or break. The plot lines for the next few look so much more interesting. I know that I have been waiting for 'Infamous' since the November spoilers. I think that and 'Turbulence' will get the show back on the good track it started at the beginning of the season.

ITA, and despite being a Cloiser, I had high hopes when the Lana arc was mentioned. It was the perfect chance to properly wrap up Clana and give Lana/KK a proper sendoff. But like you said, it progressed into a nightmare and now I just hope it all ends well tonight.

Again, ITA and this is definately a concern of mine going into this episode as well with the way the built Clois up first half only to undo it in these last few episodes. I'm worried too that Clana will be forced to not be together instead of them making a decsion to not be together, and then later we will have Clois moments that won't really make sense after the Clana ending. But I have faith that PS3 will wrap it up well and finish this season strong.

Yep, the plot lines for the episodes after tonight's definately look like they will be great and get SV back to the great start in had early on this season

Definately patient and looking forward to tonight's episode and the rest of the season. I really hope tonight will be awesome, and think it definately has the possibility to be great. However, I fear that the potential this episode has will not be fully realized b/c of being oveshadowed by Clana!

It's make or break for me being a religious follower of SV and probably for a few others who have lost faith in Clark recently. If PS3 end this right and proper then it could set the rest of the season in fantastic stead. If they end it wrong then I'm afraid SV may lose quite a lot more of it's fanbase.

You nailed it with this one. I would say it's make or break for believability for the remainder of the season.

I really don't think this episode makes or breaks the season! All episodes until now have been good IMO (Some where less good, like Plastique and Prey), but since the mid-season break things have gone really well! I've enjoyed every episode since the break ;)
I hope Requiem will bring proper closure to 7 years of terrific Clana, though I'm getting the feeling that they might mess it up... :(
*keeps in mind Lana will get a heroic send-off* (Hopefully that doesn't mean giving her life for Clark... Though that might be the reason he turns to Lois.. Ah well, I dunno :p)
I think Requiem will be great, featuring the Toyman (he's cool) and Oliver 'buying' LuthorCorp :)

vyperman7, great post!!
It would be ideal to finally have Clark realize on his own that Lana is not the best woman for him, but I don't think the writers are going to do that judging by the previous 3 episodes.
I think Clois can still be salvaged though. Think back at Bride and how just in a few episodes Clark's character made a 180 degree turn. I'm sure the writers will do damage control come March and get him back on course. Afterall, 70 years of Superman mythology with Lois Lane being his leading lady can't be thrown out the window even in Smallville.
So no, none of these episodes make or break the season for me, because they really weren't tied into the main storyline or arcs.

Agreed - not a make or break episode tonight. Tonight, Clark's taking the trash to the curb. And to prove it, in Infamous, he can fling the Dear John dvd out the window and use it for heat vision target practice!

 Well, for the most part here on this thread, I don't seem to have to do Much thinking 'Out Loud' -- written down, so to speak, since almost everyone who's responded so far is already expressing how I feel as well. ITA with you, 'ManOfSteel87'. You have eloquently spoken for the majority CONSUS, IMO. :D Thanks!
I also Love the way you summarized our major concerns about this Lana Arc, 'vyperman7', when you said:

Usually, I wouldn't believe that a 'Single' episode in the middle of a season in a Long-running series such as Smallville could 'make or break' the last half of that season. However, with this Particular series, that has an already Established Mythos, eventhough it's only partially adhered to, Still has set 'Markers' that keep it Identifiable as the 'Offspring' of its ORIGINAL CREATION. I'm feeling that TOO MUCH of a Detour might be more than I could 'Comfortably' follow along, because then it will have become an Altered Journey down a Whole 'Other' Path. :\
Again, all the Network wants is Higher Ratings, and the 'News' is that they have been getting what they want with this Lana Arc that's almost 'Detached' from the rest of the season 8 storyline. Our 'Investment' in Smallville is 'Emotional', the Network's Investment in Smallville is 'Business'. No matter how we 'Feel', they seem to be pretty much Happy with their 'Product'. So, in the end, I hope we'll All get what we want given enough Time. What will be Important about "Requiem", is what it will mean to a Particular Segment of Smallville's Fanbase, those of us who believe in the Iconic Love story between Clark and Lois in the future, and how we will be able to perceive the story's progression from here on, IMHO. So, YES, PS3's Wrap-up of the Lana Arc WILL determine how the rest of Smallville, The Series, is received by a certain segment of the fans.

Yep...Id like to see Clark redeem himself tonight, but I'm not setting my hopes too high. I learned A LOT last week.
IMO, this episode went way beyond nightmare to full on cluster ****! I don't know if it will be make or break, but I was light years beyond disappointed. For the first time, I didn't care if this was the last season or even the last episode. I think the only way I might like this season again is if Clark uses the ring the Leigon gave him and completely erases this season 8 Lana arc.
