Oh ok.Thanx.I don't think it's exactly sci fi then but it is closer to Smallville than American Idol is.Anyway JAMHEXXX,and since i didn't see on you in the forums yesterday i will say it again:what's done with the Lana arc is done. The people who should look themselves in the mirror are PS3.Apparently 2 of them may have been practising for their future Melrose Place endeavours. Will i miss Lana?Probably not.I will miss Kristin as i would any of the cast who have been here for years. Finally,i am really anxious to see how well Infamous does.If it's against Bones i am even more intrigued. The show might have been damaged by the bad writing of the last 3 episodes, but let's hope that this one month layoff along with some good promotion will be just what the doctor ordered.

Has Bones always been in the same timeslot as SV?

I think it moved there at the turn of the year. When a show that gets 10-11 mil viewers moves into your timeslot,it's bound to take away some of your audience. But to be honest,Smallville hasn't had it's best episodes against Bones as of yet.

Actually, I suspect that this latest arc, plus another hiatus, is going to hit the upcoming eps very hard. It won't have much to do with their quality, I just think there's are people out there really wondering if tuning back in on March 5 is what they want to do. I'm one of them.
I agree. What is ironic and unfunny is that the news about how great Smallville (Based on the first 9-10 eps) started coming out RIGHT before Lana's arc. For anybody who read that news, and tuned into this....they're definitely not coming back.

Well- 3.932 million for the final is solid. Not great but solid. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that means that SV is still the top rated show on the CW. I would feel better if we stayed in the 4 million range but I think that Bones is much tougher competition than I believed it would be (BTW I'm a big Bones fan too.) All in all if ratings remain more or less the same I think a ninth season is likely, if Tom Welling resigns that is.

I am willing to make a bet that Infamous will have better ratings then this pile of crap.
The problem with Infamous is the one month break. They need TONS of promotions to bring the show up.

Promotion doesn't really mean crap to most fans of a TV show. Do you really care if Smallville doesn't get a ton of promotion?
Actually, yes. I want Smallville to have more promotion because that means more people will know about the show's return, and that could mean more people will tune in.
I love how everyone is saying that Bones is Smallville's ratings killer! Lana is the frakking culprit!
I remember a different spin last week. :rotfl:

It doesn't make sense to me to blame Lana's 5 episode arc on bad ratings,
when 3 of the 5 episodes got higher ratings than 6 of the 9 before Bride.
Anyway, there are so many variables to why Ratings go up and down.
Even at SV's worst rating this Season, it's still CW's highest, and should
get a Season 9. :)
I also find it interesting that this Season hasn't taken the 2nd half dive,
in ratings, that is so common. It's still fairly consistent, which says alot.

One of them being the highly promoted Legion, written by Geoff Johns.
But, I do agree, it has nothing to do with Lana, it has to do with the fact that the Lana arc, storywise, sucked.

I disagree, The Lana storyline was probably one of the most well thought out and comprehensive storylines that SV has ever done. It answered questions, it finally showed Lana in a stronger more purposeful way; Chloiac; Chloe and Oliver are struggling with the whole "justice" issue; Lex is more involved then we even thought, he may/may not be dead; Tess's story has changed, she is an ambiguous character and sinister; we saw several Superman comic book characters; Davis is Doomsday; and Clark is still trying to find his balance in the world, his superhero vs. human life. It had a lot of action and drama. How anyone can say that the last few episodes were the worst is beyond me. I guess the Lana "factor" is just something people want to spin as negative no matter what else happened. That is a shame, I think there was some fantastic camera work, directing, acting and music.......Classic Smallville that I fell in love with.

The ratings were very high for legion which was one of the most hyped up episodes of the year. It was playing on the mythology and that brought a lot of comic book fans to see the show, not to mention garnered more publicity (NY Times had an article on this episode). Bulletproof was a good episode IMO and though it didnt do as well, I feel it gave a boost to Power (along with the fact that there was no new shows on that week). After power, ratings went below 4 again. That seems as if it supports the opinion that bad writing led to the bad ratings for this arc. It certainly does not discount it.

There are just too many variables to blame ratings on storylines alone. Especially, with the competition being repeats or not. The ratings this Season have not tanked and are actually fairly consistent.

Does anyone else think that the current ratings system is growing outdated? We can't really get an accurate number of viewers thanks to people being able to watch online (legally or otherwise), or through other means not counted as part of the official ratings.

I absolutely think it is outdated. I'm not sure I trust it anymore, but this is what the Networks look at. How sad is that? With all this new technology, they are still basing if a show lives or dies, on such outdated thinking. Smallville picks up nearly a million more viewers from dvr each week that isn't counted by Networks, yet. I think that will have to change soon.

I have to side with the victim of circumstances theory on ratings myself. With Bulletproof and Requiem both getting sub 4M ratings when going head to head with Bones, I don't think that is a coincidence(and I personally would love to blame Lana for the ratings, but Power proved me otherwise)
Sadly I feel there will be alot of sub 4M ratings to come down the line, with all the competition(Bones mainly but Survivor(which starts this week) as well when Smallville comes back), the break while other shows are airing fresh new episodes for the next 3 weeks, Lana fans leaving after getting there ending, and a few fans who might just turn off the show after the previous storyline(sort of the Promise effect, although I felt alot of the people who gave up after that were actual Clana fans sick of the BS).
If when Lois comes back and all her episodes are over 4M, I think one could make the arguement that certain characters do effect ratings(especially if the non-Lois episodes don't do as well), but I don't see it happening.
As for this entire season the only Rating for an episode that doesn't make any sense would be Abyss, the show was doing so well just before it(constantly getting better ratings throughout the season) then boom(even with the NY market I think it would have been the worst rated episode all season or it might have slightly beat Power)

When the majority of the reviewers outside of Smallville say that the Lana arc was weak, then maybe they are right about something. You might think that it doesn't suck, but the majority do.
This is not rocket science, if the story is good, the people stay, if not, the people leave. It has been like that Bones? Smallville held against Lost in the past.

Another ilusion. If the Lana fans were really that many, the show wouldn't drop like it just did.
And, oh, my hands are pretty clean, because I defended the Lana arc until Power. So, there is no bias here.

Lana getting powers , which I did enjoy how she got them, was one of the two things that I would have changed in the arc. Overall it was a good arc and it answered a lot of questions and also opened up some new questions for the rest of the season.
I would have done the whole Clark and Lana thing differently but I did like how they handled it because even thought I did not like them together anymore I still felt emotions while watching and they were good emotions.

Requiem can be seen as the most important and most anticipated episode for the clana-fandom in season 8. And yet did the episode bring in record numbers? Did the episode even break 4.0? No, it did not. :)
Lana Lang was lucky to be in an episode like Bride and Legion that would have done well no matter what. The only episode that did well with Lana Lang was Power. And there are many, many factors that went into it's success, the most obvious (and yet most readily overlooked) reason is that every major network was airing REPEATS! Yes, that's right. The episode had no competition as far as new episodes from other shows are concerned.
But yeah, let's keep tossing the idea that Lana Lang brings ratings. And when we sit here and discuss Infamous and it peaks in ratings I'm sure spin-theorists will still claim one way or another that Lana Lang is responsible for the spike in numbers.

Bride was promoted mainly as Clois.
Legion was promoted with the JLA.
Bulletproof had a definite Clana lean to it.
Power was against reruns.
Requiem was mainly promoted as Clana.
All I see is two Clana episodes going below Four million. You can't really count Abyss since it was pre-empted in the NY market for the NFL.

Assuming 25M people were blacked out because of football and Abyss held the audience of Bloodline(the highest rated episode this season), Abyss would have got slightly over 3.9M viewers.
I think my initial number is very high and chances it wouldn't hold that Bloodline Number either because the rest of the episode seemed not to. I am guessing if it played on a even playing field in terms of viewers it would have rated slightly lower then Power.

Smallville has been under 4 million 3 times this season
One was because of the pre-emption in New York for a NFL game.
The other two? When it went up against Bones. I think Smallville is going to have a hard time cracking 4 million on a consistant basis for the rest of the season.
I think that's very true! I'm sure that Bones airs at the same time Infamous does, I think Infamous won't do so good...

Unfortunately I have a sinking feeling that you may be right. There are also several other contributing factors: the month long wait forced on us by the on again off again digital transition delay of Sweeps and also the undeniable fact that the CW refuses to shell out ad money for Smallville time and time again.

The story arch was ridiculous. Write a GOOD story with Lana....especially WITHOUT it involving character ASSASSINATIONS on the rest......and people wouldn't say it was the worst.......but Glorify Lana Lang as Lana Lang Superwoman and what does anyone expect. I mean come on....first there's a lot of Lana Fu here, and a lot of Lana Fu there........I remember when it was Lana the Super villain.....Lex & Lionel Luthor's evil equal incarnate (phfft!).....and now it's Super Lana.....capable of outwitting Green Arrow.....and equal to the Superboy wanna be Clark Kent........I mean I know people like her as a character...nothing wrong with that......but how can they possibly accept these JOKE storylines with a straight face......is just beyond me. No wonder the ratings dropped. Bottom line is that good stories bring in and keep viewers......no matter what else is on......"stories" that suck.....well, we know what happens.....and this week proved it.

I agree with this...and (to sound like a broken record) would throw Kara in there as additional proof of this fact since her episode is currently the highest rated for the season. :p Hello CW producers?! This means she should be brought back!!
Viewers seem to really like Lois too, so we'll see how this plays out. I think I'm also in agreement with the sentiment that the Lana arc really didn't do anything for me and it just seemed like a rehashing of the same old Clark/Lana story of seven years past. Lana just hurts Clark and regresses him, and I feel badly for that. I wanted to like Kristen's final portrayal as Lana. A good deal of the blame probably should be placed w/ the writers. I'm sure Kristen did what she could w/ the material given her. And I thought the whole idea of this bio suit and her absorbing Kryptonite was just a little over the top (yes...even for Smallville) and just way too deux ex machina as a way to resolve the Clark/Lana issue.
I was just over the whole Clark/Lana thing after season 7 and was happy to not return to it. But if it needed closure, could we have seen something that didn't involve Lana donning some biosuit and then absorbing Kryptonite as a way that keeps Clark away from her? It was just a little too ridiculous for me. Why couldn't it have just been a discussion along the lines of "We just don't work together and aren't meant to be...I'm leaving Smallville for (insert whatever reason) and am going to live my own life...yadda yadda."?
Yes of course there are probably many other variables factoring into the ratings decline. I absolutely agree w/ that as well. However, I don't think the Lana factor can be completely ignored. Let's hope the ratings pick up and that the producers do realize that certain characters do hike up ratings (Lois, Clark, Chloe, KARA!!). Are you listening producers? ;)

I was just over the whole Clark/Lana thing after season 7 and was happy to not return to it. But if it needed closure
It still needs closure and that's why the arc was a complete and utter failure. Clark still loves her, she will always love him and so what was the closure? Lana as a free agent superhero? It's all nonsense. It was a huge failure and I don't expect the ratings to go up in March, I expect them to go down and they deserve to go down. As far as the audience is concerned it has become the Clana show again and why would they come back?
Wouldn't the audience believe that Clark will go out searching for a cure and brooding until he found one? That's what I'd expect if I didn't read spoilers. I'd see no reason to come back to the show. I'd switch to Bones, or Survivor, which should also be back when new Smallville episodes air. Smallville is the only show I watch on the CW estrogen network and I know I'm not alone in that. So chances are when they start promoting Infamous, I won't see the promos and neither will others who don't watch the CW except for Smallville. I'll be shocked if it can reach 3.5 million after this debacle.

But I've long since given up on the CW doing proper promotion for this show.

I kind of think they left off the trailer for the same reason they left Lois out of the Clana arc. They wanted to separate Lois from Lana. Showing a Lois trailer right after the Lana and Clark break-up would have been in bad taste, imo.

Really? I love David Boreanez, but I just can't sit through an entire episode of Bones - maybe I just have to see it from the beginning or something - yet, apparently it draws in a lot of viewers, so that would explain (among other things) why Requiem's numbers were so low this week.
That being said, it was the highest rated for the CW network (if I remember correctly) - and that makes me happy, so as long as we can maintain that status I think the show will be okay.

You're right! I hang out on KSite and read spoilers so much that I sort of forget that those who do not form their opinion of what is to come based on the last episode. You would expect the absurd Lana arc to be a part of the rest of the season if you didn't know better which may drive people away in droves (like it did after Power).
I just hope that there are some "outside of the CW" advertising for SV because if there was no KSite, I would have no idea when the next new episode was scheduled or what it might be about.
That is very worrisome to me for the rest of the season in view of next season. Perhaps a single big blitz the week prior to Infamous would be in order, announcing the renewal of SV for a Season 9 and showing promos from Season 8 and Infamous trailer, talking up the return of ED and permanent departure of KK from the series would help.

with the return of Lois in March, it will go back up to 4+ million
I still cant believe the writers are ignoring the fact that ratings seem to do well when Lois is a constant.

Me neither. Plus, if they get Clark in the suit and flying consistently in season 9 premiere. I really believe ratings will easily double back to season 1 & 2 highs. They have the ability to thrust an entirely new - and long awaited show to a whole new--or old and gone -- group of fans.

Interesting article! Thanks! Hearing anything positive for a S9 is welcome.
Just think,.. S8 could have gone so wrong, and we would be hearing all negative
news.
I'm so thankful, it went so right and even if we don't get a S9, at least we don't have to read negative press everyday. I have high hopes for a S9. :)

Ya rly.
If they really want to bring the ratings up for Smallville, all they have to do is give us Superman. If they have him flying around, saving people and defeating villains, trust me, people will watch. After so many years of red barn this, red jacket that, fans are tired. All we want to see is Clark become Superman and do things that Superman does.

So, when all is said and done, does the Live+7 ratings matter? 20 years from now, are we going to be saying "oh that show averaged 3.9 in the ratings but hey, it averaged a 4.8 in L+7!"
I understand that the Live+7 ratings can't be ignored, but is their value worth as much as the normal ratings?

They basically worthless to advertisers because when people fast forwarding through commercials, what use is that to them. The only thing the DVR viewership would effect would be on show product placement.

Yeah, and I am seeing alot more product placement, lately.
But, they are doing studies to see how much product memory retention, viewers have when they FF thru commercials. They found, that if the product is placed in the middle of the screen, then people remember it. Almost like subliminal advertising.
The Image is hardly there, but it registers in the subconscious.
So, I believe that DVR viewers will be come very relevent in the Future. Just look at the large amount of DVR Live+7 for all of the shows. It will be hard to continue to discount them, especially since most Live ratings have taken a dive.
OK, I'm finished with my "Dissertation"

But it was a good "Dissertation."
By the way, I thought you could choose to not record commercials with some DVR's.

Oh, thanks!LOL I do find it interesting.
I think I saw that feature one time. During the commercial it was just a blank screen. That would leave the only option to be Product Placement. Sometimes it can be annoying, if it's blatant.:/

TiVo has that option, I believe. My DVR doesn't.

Thank you as always for bringing such wonderful news. I love seeing reruns of Smallville do better than the other shows on the network. I am curious to see how the show will do up against the latest season of America's Next Top Model, though... As long as SV stays number one in terms of scripted shows, and I have little to no doubt that it will, then I am okay.
I'm still holding out for the 5.0million viewer rating. I have hopes that we can still achieve that number.

I think they'll run a pretty close race in total viewers (ANTM returned to 3.9 mil, btw). It'll be interesting to see who comes out on top.

Well, if 3.9 mil is what ANTM brought in, then I am more confident that Smallville will beat those numbers. The thing that worries me, however, is the fact that Smallville has recently been hit by the competition Bones brings in. I know we've already secured a season 9, but IMO, ratings still matter (I don't want the last season to be just 13 or 18 episodes because of poor ratings), and I want SV to blow the CW network out of the water. Next to no promotion and it still does well... just 5mil is all I ask... and if we get more than that, even better.

Bloodline had 5,02 million viewers (Live+7)! And I think the rest of the season might do quite well too.
Infamous will do good I guess and so will Hex and Injustice.
I'm not very pumped about Stiletto and Beast tho.

I would like for it to hit five million too. But I think with DST ending (or starting... whatever) and everything, it's gonna be hard.

Well, I am happy to see that Smallville is hitting the 5 million mark at least in live+7 numbers, but I can't wait for the day that the live showing hits gets those numbers. IMO, the show is deserving of this type of recognition, and while 5mil won't grant SV the number one spot on Thursday night viewing, it would definitely say something positive about the momentum of our favorite show - hopefully enough to garner the attention of media critics/writers who typically ignore it.
You're right ClarkyBoy14 (Andrew), it will be hard, especially with all of the competition that SV is up against, but I have faith. We will see 5million caliber numbers again. I don't care if it is the series finale when we see it (though I would love to see the rating sooner), but want this show to get the viewership it deserves, and have it reflected in the ratings. (this is purely opinion...but I'm sure there are others who feel similarly, no? :p)

They really do!! I like them very much!! There are a few I never heard before like "Abyss" and "Requiem" :p
Well last episodes proves that lois lane doesn't bring the ratings.
Yeah, like Lana does an excellent job at drawling in viewers by herself.

Stupid CW... This was one of the most important episodes of the season!!
Anything during the 2nd half of season 8 wasn't that important.
This episode started the fall of the ratings for the rest of the season!

No. There have been more low rated episodes in the season.
And before you attack, let's remember that there was a very long hiatus between Requiem and the rest of the season. And ratings always drop in the second half.

You love them all? Then why did you post this just a few minutes ago:
I have no problem you saying you like Lois-free episodes but it's hard to follow your logic when one post you state you love everyone and then in another you say you love when certain members are gone. Oh, and even mere mentions of a character you *love* bother you? Huh? I don't get that.
It would be kinda lame to say I loathe Lois all the time, now wouldn't it?
I love them all, except for Lois.. Is that what you'd have wanted to hear?
I'm really not surprised to see this person banned...
