Did you find Lana annoying in this episode?
I didn't. With truly good writing, even Kristen Kruek can make a great character.

I don't necessarily find her (Kruek) annoying or unpleasant, but the character evolution from episode one as a cheerleader/girl next door to...Jackpot Superheroine-by-night (spider-man reference, I'm a nerd) is just ridiculous- THOUGH-
THOUGH!!!
For this episode the character was far more reserved and less Mary-Suish than in the passed couple of seasons and although I was initially like "Ah crap..." When they actually worked her in, the way Geoff Johns worked the angle was enough to where it didn't seem forced or contrived.

I didn't find Lana herself to be annoying.
However, in regards to the writing of her character - Hated it.. My only real gripe with the episode. I hate how the writers continue to make her have such a vital importance to the mythos. Now it is going to be even worse because it is Kristin's final five episodes on the show. Lana was never supposed to be this important. She was Clark's high school love interest, and eventual friend/confidant. That is it. It was already bad enough when they created Isobel, but now she is being billed as one of the main reasons why Clark becomes the hero. Shouldn't be all because of Clark?

I kind of liked how Clark was all bragging to Lana on the porch, "Hey, did you here they told me I have this amazing impact on the WHOLE UNIVERSE. Gosh, little ol' me? Could you imagine?"
:Still think you're better off without me now? Huh, LaLa?

I didn't like the writing. Lana looked beautiful. I wish the writers would just let me enjoy WATCHING her dedication to saving Chloe and how much she's changed while she was away rather than have a worshipful Legionnaire tell me how amazing Lana's destiny is. *shrug*

Well, they did say that she was just a part of the reason he becomes a hero, not the main reason. She is just like anyone else up to this point who has been in his life. Everyone that has really been around him is a part of why he becomes a hero. Lana just happens to be the only person in Clarks life at the moment that the Legion actually met besides Chloe (but she was not herself during that time so they really did not meet her). If they had met Lois they probably would have been in awe of her because she really plays a big part in Superman's life.

I think if they are writing Lana out of the pic (as they should) they need to put a whole lot less emphasis on her being in love with Clark still. It is obvious that he still looks at her with the "love" they had, and isnt over her yet.
She needs to leave and not come back. Like Gollum (LoTR) "Leave and NEVER come BACK".

I didn't mind Lana in this episode. I thought that it was going to be a lot worse. Yes she gave Clark a pep talk, but anyone who has watched this show from the beginning knows that this is something that happens all of the time on Smallville. I can't count the number of times his parents and Chloe have given him advice. As for TPTB making Lana important to the mythologies, I just can't complain about that because Lana has been important to this show. If I had a problem with a canon character having this much importance, then I would first need to go after Chloe, who continues to have a major importance in Clark's life even though she is not a canon character, and Lionel.

Lana rocked! She supported and advised Clark but didn't take away from Clark's role as the hero in the ep.
Even with her wig, she was still gorgeous. Bad hair can't take way from her face.

vyperman7, I totally agree with your post. The writing for Lana was the only real low point of the episode for me.
Mickey_Bickey
01-16-2009, 07:53 AM
Absolutely not. The writing was terrible.
Once again, her character served to drag Clark's character down and regress him and impune the bigger storylines like the Legion, Chloiac and Doomsday.
I read that KK had a lot of input on how Lana's character was written in these 5 episodes, and unfortunately it looks like her influence was more or less to make Lana look like the Superhero rather than Clark. It's too bad that the writers let her have that much input. The episode would have much better if her screen time was limited to maybe a scene.
Another thing, am I the only one that found it odd that she was in the barn in the first scene dressed in her party dress? Last we saw in Bride she was in a johnny at the hospital. That didn't make sense to me at all, and why was she picking up the bouquet again? Perhaps, always a bridesmaid, never a bride?

but about her character i liked it im glad she's not as psycho anymore but it does kinda bug me she's so important but i think everyone is smallville should be! (chloe! sigh)
o ya question- did something happen before she wrote the video and such to her to make her all clark=destiny or was it just a random jump

I think her just knowing his secret gives her the idea that he has a great destiny. Whatever she's hiding, no doubt has something to do with her making the video IMO.

I'm going to hold off rewatching until the entire Lana arc is over.
Dreading where they take this in the three more episodes of Lana makes it hard to enjoy this episode.
Once the arc is done, I'll likely enjoy it more (at least I hope so).

I like the Lana character as I like all the current characters. She has changed to be stronger and more self confident. She supports Clark and his destiny. She has a secret that I'm currious about. In Bride, when Clark was thrown into the loft. she was concerned about his well being. She wants to let Clark go but still asked about their future so she still has feelings for him. I think in the end she will give him up for the greater cause. I refuse to dislike her just because she has made some mistakes. Who hasn't. I know she won't end up with Clark so I am okay with her being in the next 3 episodes. Give her a nice send off she deserves as one of the leading characters for 7 years. To answer the question: I did enjoy how she was written.

I didn't think Lana was annoying, I've never found her annoying anyway! Almost everybody wants Clark to hang out with Lois and then they hate Lana, because Clark still has the hots for her (who can blame him ;))
I really liked Lana in this episode. She had very nice scenes and she helped Clark to realize that killing Chloe was not an option! She also found Chloiac by using her ISIS computer! Lana saved the day here!
Honestly, I don't know why people hate her or find her annoying... And it's my opinion that if you're not going to watch the next 3 episodes because Lana's in it, you're not truly a fan of Smallville.

I think they wrote her as best they could from what she has been through seasons 1-7. I actually liked that she got to see Clark doubt himself and the Legion did not. Although I think the writers have inverted Chloe and Lana for season 8. Lana seems to channaling Chloe and Chloe seems to be in the center of the drama without all the facts...

My views on The Lang is summed up in this poem
Twas brilliant when The Lang went away
Clark progressed and became a man
Now she's back for a short stay
He's been de-balled by The Lang
Isn't he at the DP reporting?
Wasn't he overzealous in Prey?
But since The Lang came a-courting
There's no fire, he's cold as clay
She's back and with a light switch or two
The Lang's a hero, he's a stud
She'll teach him heroism ala Lana-fu
Now a proactive Clark is just a dud
To sum it up in short
It's always been Lanaville
Superman is now kaput
Instead we have a hick from Smallville
Was The Lang annoying in this episode? No she wasn't but wait till Requiem, I know she will do something that will make me pull my hair out.

I thought the writing was good for Lana. She was strong, mature and had the courage of her convictions. I wish he could write for Lana more often. I liked it. The conversation and dynamic on the porch was some of the best writing I've seen in a long time - in terms of dialogue and the execution of the written dialogue. It all seemed so real.
There seems to be a strong correlation, the majority of people who had a problem with Lana being on the season's highest ratest episode, also have a picture of Lois in their avtar.

I think what helped too was that Geoff is a comics writer, and I myself could see a little more comics!Lana, the way she was helping Clark investigate in regards to finding Chloe. If he were to write another episode with Lana, I'm sure there'd be more.

Lana is far more assertive than in the past. The writers have decided to change her character to how she is in the comics. I suspect that KK appreciates the scripts more now than those in the past.

Tolerable....until the end.
Lana left SV via video (for whatever secret reason), then stated in "Bride" that....maybe Lana and Clark weren't meant to end up together"..., then has the audacity to inquire from Saturn Girl (in her thoughts) about her future w/ Clark!
It's ping pong if you ask me! Back and forth, and back and forth, and back and forth etc.
Nothing at all against KK, I just thought the ending with Lana was ....eh, unnecessary. But, since Chloe went to see her hubby in Star City, and Lois is there as well, Lana was the only female (lead) actress around.:\

I think the key word is that she said "maybe". I don't think she's sure herself and wanted to find out from someone in the future whom she thought would know for sure. Gotta say, I would have asked the same thing.

I have mixed feelings about this. I thought she looks more grown up now, and the Clark pep talk didn't annoy me that much, especially because she didn't say anything about them or the past relationship; however, I still have a problem when they try to paint her at this savior of the world or when they try to make it seem as though she has this huge influence in Clark's decision to become who he's destined to become. I'm not saying she shouldn't have any influence, but it should be minimal, imo. Lana Lang was Clark Kent's high school sweetheart. That's it. She wasn't "the woman" in his life or anything of the sort, as far as a I know.

In SV's rendition of the mythos, Lana is the most important woman in Clark's life. And according to Imra, Lana will make a huge difference in the world apart from her relationship with Clark. Written in the history books according the Legion. That's a fact.

I know, why the heck does he need her to become Superman? That should be his choice, I don't remember her being his inspiration to become Superman in the comics (probably because in the comics he actually has b@lls (b@lls) and doesn't need other people to make life-altering choices for him). KK has played Lana to purrfection. From the doe eyed innocent that lured Clark into a need to rescue, to the "you'll never know what I'm up to because I have to be mysterious...am I a gold digger who's afraid to be alone, or a thief that wants to play games & kick butt....?"

I think she was okay. I don't care for Lana that much at all, but atleast it didn't kill me that much for her to be in this episode.
