Do you think this foreshadowed Chloe's death or was it just a way to add her to the Annals of History?

Clark being kryptonian has a longer life span than other people, so eventually Chloe would die.

I think one of the points of this episode is to show that the time line for the future- DC Timeline is different than the time line for the present-SV Timeline. In DC Timeline there is no Chloe in SV Timeline there is a Chloe, so basically I think Chloe will live because this is an alternate timeline.

I think they want us to think that Chloe's going to die, but I think Chloe dying would be too obvious now.
I like the idea of her going into some sort of witness protection or something like that.
I read a fic once where Chloe became Vicky Vale. Since I never liked Vicky Vale, the idea of Chloe becoming her makes her waay cooler.
*yes, I know Chloe will NOT become Vicky Vale, but you gotta admit it would kinda fit.

Honestly....I was feeling great about this episode because it kept screaming "chloe wont die!!!" So I was doing a little happy dance.
Especially when Clark said "Chloe Sullivan does not die."
But then.....the STUPID last scene between the two of them. It really wasnt stupid....but there was one part that completely flipped my view. Chloe is reassuring Clark that if it ever comes to that....he needs to do whats best for the greater good.
Then Clark says something along the lines of "As long as I'm alive thats not going to happen"
And I had a sudden screeching hault in my brain! All I could think was well great...so when Clark and Dooms face off....and Clark IS about to die....and cant do anything to save the day. Chloe will sacrifice her life for him.
I was feeling so good until that line. I mean...there has to be a reason nobody has ever heard of Chloe Sullivan in the future.
I sadly think she will die by series end....if not the end of this season. :(

Aww, Andi... I hope you're wrong! Because, if she did die to save Clark, wouldn't people remember her as the woman who gave her life for him?
I think something else will happen and she'll get a different alias, and I went into this episode thinking there was a high likelihood of Chloe sacrificing herself for Clark.
It's too bad that there was already a Lucy Lane introduced, because it would be awesome to have Chloe be renamed as Lucy Lane. Lucy is blonde in some comic books and she's sometimes romantically linked with Jimmy, and Chloe and Lois are like sisters...
Yeah, a girl can dream.

That's what I think- Smallville is an AU version of the DC comics- which would account for all of the discrepancies in Smallville and I'm not just talking about the existence of Chloe which is what all the fans of the mythos gripe about. I mean hello he has been working at the Daily Planet for months so where is Superman?

Thats actually a very good point!! Chloe would be remembered for giving her life! :)
I'm hoping I'm wrong too...but it's just a weird gut feeling I have now.

Yeah, I agree. I would be perfectly happy to see them have Chloe continue being Chloe. They've already thrown a lot of the mythos out the window, and Smallville has got to be AU of the DC universe (which already has lots of inconsistencies and plot variations because hello, it's been around for 70 years!)
I'm all for Chloe-as-Vicky-Vale though. It fits-a blonde reporter, and she gets to hook up with Batman... lol.
But you know they wouldn't let them touch a Batman character. Oh well.
No but Cat Grant does remind me of someone...

Who does Cat Grant remind you of? *curious*
And yes, she does sacrifice herself for Clark regularly and you're right-how many times has she died now? Smallville is quite fond of the soap opera killing off characters, only to have them not be really dead or come back to life. It amuses me!

Live, of course. I still don't know why people thinks she has to die. The main people seen in Clark's life when he becomes Superman are Lois, Jimmy and his enemies. That does not mean that other people don't play a part in his life. Maybe they are just not mentioned. Chloe could be one of those people.

As much as I would love to see her live, I think dying would do her more justice.
If Chloe lives I would have to come to terms with Clark choosing Lois over her, but if Chloe died I would know that Clark had no other option.

Killing Chloe would be a perfect way out for the writers, since her character was never a part of the DC universe. Don't get me wrong, it would be devastating for me to see her go, for I have loved her all those years. But in this episode, it was obvious more than ever that TPTB are considering killing her. They even hinted that Chloe's death might be the 'price' we have to pay to see Clark fly.
Although I want to see Chloe live, I think we might in fact see her die.

I don't want to see Chloe or anyone else HAVE to die just so we can see Clark fly!
I also don't want her to die saving Clark (no matter how heroic it may seem) or at the hands of Doomsday because she's caught in the middle of that.
I want to see her live! She's grown on me too much to see her simply disappear and never be seen or heard from again.

Thats the vibe I got as well.
Especially in the last scene between Clark and Chloe.
She told him if anything was to ever happen...she would want him to do whats best for the greater good. And let her die.
Then he said "as long as I'm around that wont happen"
So I got the feeling that its going to be a flipped situation. Clarks life will be on the line (probabley after the doomsday show down) so Chloe will want to do whats best for the world and sacrifice her own life to save Clark. If he's dying...and injured he wont be able to protest...or atleast not enough to stop her.
Basically this episode let us know how Chloe feels about the matter....and how Clark would do anything to keep her around. But sadly...I'm still not feeling great about Chloe's fate. :(
But then someone made a good point in another thread. If Chloe died....wouldnt people have still heard about her in the future? :\
But, Chloe did say if it comes to killing her to do it close to the end of the episode.
And Chloe also begged him not to take her memories... Clark Kent has trouble listening to his friends wishes.

I'm a fan of her character so i don't want her to die.
Though the hint of "Chloe's death influencing Clark to fly" really irked me. Clark should fly of his own bounds not of anyone elses (and before anyone says anything, that includes Lois to me)

While I like Chloe, I am going to ahve to say die. And just have her death be that extra push to help him to jumpstart his Superman career. So far Clark has been pretty lucky with his friends suriviving everything they have gone through with him. Its a matter of time before there is a casualty.
She'll die because no one is clever enough to put her in the comics in a good way (not talking about Chlois).

Could the reason be that she is not known in the future is because in the Legion future Chloe died when Brainiac was removed from her. So, know that they helped Clark save her - people will know her in the future.
Or as suggested - she has a pseudonym and she is remembered under the pseudonym ;)

She's gonna die, you don't get those types of scenes unless something is gonna happen.
If the writers were smart they'd kill her off. Then again they'd probably make her some kind of martyr in death, so it's a rock and a hard place

While I think Clark was right in not killing her (he would never live with his conscience), letting her live will bring far worse consequences. They didn't throw all those anvils for nothing, the whole 'doing what is better for the world and not me', 'be careful on the days to come', and 'placing her trust on the wrong person' are just warnings of what is about to come. Chloe knowing Clark's secret will finally be dangerous for Clark, not just Chloe. But, it that were the case, I think the legion should remember about the friend that betrayed Clark and helped Doomsday to kill him or the martyr that sacrificied her life for Superman. I'm confused.

I think it would be really stupid if they are going to kill her off.. I think she is a big part of Smallville and I really like her character.
So I hope she lives. But, I think something will happen to her.

Since the Legion did not know Chloe, she will live. Because if she had died, there would be no reason for Clark not to talk about her. Her identity is a secret. They probably know her by a different name.

She's gonna die, you don't get those types of scenes unless something is gonna happen.
If the writers were smart they'd kill her off. Then again they'd probably make her some kind of martyr in death, so it's a rock and a hard place
And she has died. And her death has been foreshadowed countless times throughout every single season, and once it even came true. But she keeps coming back, and I highly doubt she's going anywhere. Sure, she'll die again, be it Dooms or suicide, she'll die and she'll come back... Again. ;)
Long Live the Blonde!!!

I think she dies. It was hinted several times in this episode. Clark says that nothing is going to happen while he is around. We know that Doomsday kills him, and he remains dead for some time, so he won't be around for a while to protect Chloe. I think that's why Rokk said that maybe chloe's death is what finally inspires Clark pursue his destiny and become Superman. But, if that were the case, shouldn't Chloe be remembered for that?

Even if Chloe did die shouldn't she be remebered for dying for Clark. I think now Clark knows she won't be rmembered that he'll make sure she'll be remebered no matter what happens.

IT was also hinted that she would change her name. They are both Red Herrings and teases to get Chloiser and antiChloe fans all riled up.
And yes Chloe should be remembered for dying for Clark. It's ridicolous that she wouldn't.

Yeah, I really wish the show would spend more time making being a fan fun and less time baiting. It's time to pay off the set up.
The Legion also suggested Chloe was trying to get Clark to embrace his heritage, which she has. So, I'm leaning towards Chiri's suggestion that they'll pay off all three suggestions. She inspires him, she "dies", but she also lives on under a psuedonym.

Lana dies and her spirit gets into Chloe, a la 'Dawn Stiles'. That will finally end with the Chlois theory, once and for all.;)

I like the idea that all three suggestions will happen. She will inspire him as she has been doing the last 8 years; we know she would die for him, Odyssey proved that; with all the hints over the years about a psuedonym, I can see this happening.
Chloe Sullivan will not be forgotten because she is an integral part of why Smallville has been a success. Even if she is not added into the comics, fans will not forget her.

Chloe is a conglomeration of Lois and Lana. She only has value in Smallville. She isn't in the Superman mythos. She should die.
Hopefulsuicide
01-20-2009, 04:51 AM
Chloe is nothing like Lana or Lois IMO.
Yes, she was created as sort of a Lois replacement, as every hero needs their spunky strong female friend as well as their sweet and innocent love story. She was the journalism aspect of the show, the information messenger for all the wacky, and she was entiorely essential to the premise of each individual episode. I can't even begin to imagine how they would have handled early storylines without Chloe's tenacious curiosity for the supernatural and her natural investigative skills.
However it is her feelings for, and subsequent awkward and fractured relationship for Clark that differentiates her from Lois and Lana, and is why she was such a sympathetic character. Her unrequited love kept pulling on my hearts strings, and the heart strings of anyone else who's ever felt that way... especially since i was in my early teens at the time and very much had the same scenario with one of my male friends.
As the show progressed, those feelings and the dynamics between Chloe/Clark, Chloe/Lana and Chloe/Lois in later seasons put a lot of heart into the show. It's not because she had a bit of Lana and a bit of Lois in her that made her popular, it's that she was new and fresh and unlike most characters she was not tied down.
There was so much freedom with Chloe. There was no possibility of anyone saying 'that's not what she does in the comics. That's why they could do things like have her get meteor powers, have her be Lois' cousin, have her and Jimmy be a couple. Because there was no one she was 'destined' to be with.
And then we have the reveal. She is the only character other than Lana that in mythos terms, was allowed to know the secret and still go on living, and walking around  And this made her presence in the show essential after the Kents left, as he would have had no one other than Lana to talk to about his powers and the aliens and the phantom zoners and the fortress. Can you imagine how dull the show would have been if all Chloe's sidekick roles had had to be filled by Lana because Chloe didn't know the truth?
No, Chloe has been huge in Smallville. She may not be remembered in the future of that universe, but she will be remembered in the future in our world!
Should she die? No.
I wanted her to a while back, because i usually think that self sacrifice is a very heroic way to go out, and i wanted her to be remembered for being that much of a hero, kinda like Doyle in Angel. But unlike Angel, i don't think Clark could handle it. I think he would whine and moan and just become a recluse.
What would be much more interesting now is if she got so deep into helping the JL, that she had to dissapear. That her existence was literally erased so that she wouldn't be hunted by something/someone. And under a new name, she could be a wonderful new part of the JL.

I agree! If I don't get Chlois, I damn well had better get that scenario you proposed. At this point, for her to die (for good) would be ridiculous. There is absolutely no reason she wouldn't be remembered in the future (mythos) as of now. If she had died in the season 3 finale? Sure, I can buy that her relationship with Clark wasn't developed enough for the world to talk about for thousands of years. Chloe now? Irreplaceable. She's everything to Clark, whether you ship them romantically or not.
Meh. Just kill off Lois and give Chloe the official name of Clark's soulmate... since she already IS his soulmate. :D

Folks, I think this episode gives some good clues about what would happened to Chloe at the series end. Just look at the Chlark dialogue below. If you see how the direction of Chloe's character has gone since then (befriending Davis/Doomsday, losing Jimmy, doing questionable stuffs without Clark's knowledge, etc), I think this would only lead into a situation where she would become more of a liability than an asset to Clark and at some point he would have to deal w/her. I don't like it at all, I've been a fan of Chloe since season 1, but I could see the sense of an inevitable doom.
Chloe: I just hope that if it turned out that there was no other choice, you would choose to do the right thing.
Clark: What choice would that be?
Chloe: To do what's best for the world... and not for me. Know that I'd understand.
