View Full Version : Loved it? Hated it? What did you think of "Legion"

Clark asks about what she was told but Lana has the audacity to basically say that she'll defy history and make her own destiny. Yep, she's definately going to make a play for Clark. But as you'll find out Lana.. your destiny is already sealed and there is nothing you can do to rob Clark of his future with Lois. I can't wait until you realize that.
Come on, Ceddie old man, we know Lana will never realize Lois is the one for him. Oh, dude, I just has a horrible thought. What if Clark is like begging Lana to stay with him and they should start with a clean slate for the millionth time, but Lana says "no, you heard the Legion, I'm to have fame and glory even without you. Don't cry, Clark. I know you'll never get over me, but you can make do with someone else. Why not Lois? She's tall and you won't throw your back out trying to hug her." Then off Lana goes, her own hubris causing her to go from famous to footnote in the myth's history  Great review as always, Cedric.
And I think you're right that she's making a play for Clark. She was like I'm all changed after 7 months and Chloe needs "both" of us and then her talk about making their own destiny after Imra didn't sound too positive about her relationship with Clark. The problem is Clark might regress to being dumb enough to fall for it, but I'll keep the faith. She only has 3 eps left and I don't think PS3 would wreck what they started this year.
I am still not convinced that she knows "THAT" secret.
She never said which secret she knows
Now that's a funny idea :D The power could go out in Chloe's apartment and she could set out candles but doesn't have matches so Clark says he can help her out and he lights them with heat vision and she says "OMG! How did you do that!" And he says "Chloe, you said you remembered my secret" "Yes, Jimmy said you had secret feelings for Lois" "Oops"
i understand if you dont like comic books this episode might not seem so great, but to me (a huge comic book dork) this episode gave me and anyone who watches smallville for the SUPERMAN aspect of the show, everything they wanted to see and got our dork off in a huge way
True. I don't have a problem with people who thought it was cartoony or corny because I've dealt with that a lot being a comic book geek
nd please keep in mind geoff johns writes SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, AND GREEN LANTERN, aside from G.L those are about SUPERMAN not SMALLVILLE, so trying alter the character he knows and loves to fit the continuity of smallville had to be a little bit different for him.
Right and some of it I don't think he had a hand in writing. His episode was supposed to be before the hiatus originally and Lana wasn't back at that point, for example, and so she may not even have been in his original script. I think they saved this episode for after the hiatus because TPTB knew they'd need a big episode to get viewers back. The question is whether the viewers will stay after the Legion is gone. We'll see.

I really loved this episode, seeing Smalls' version of the legion is awesome! I liked how they make mention of things we all know from the comics and the big screen. It made me laugh how they have obviously come to know of Clark's ultimate cult superhero status with the flights and tights that he is so against now; and rather sad when they mentioned how the Chloe character that we have come to know and love is not mentioned in the catalogs of his history. This makes me wonder will she be the reason he ultimately takes to flight-in a poetic sense anyway?!

I am still not convinced that she knows "THAT" secret.
She never said which secret she knows, it may be that she caught him with a Playdude magazine in high school :p
Oh come on, what other secret would we care to know she remembers. lol
And if you think about it, Chloe lost her memory of the secret after Brainiac infected her, and Brainiac never left Chloe. It has to be that secret! :D lol

Cedric, as ever, the master. Love your Jedi mind tricks!
I was wrong, it was Rokk who had the rote list of names, not Garth. Still checking on the Torchwood/Torch reference. I'm glad you approved of my review, Libby; I live to serve.
Having watched the episode being slightly less delirious and nauseous, it has begun to grow on me, kind of like a hairshirt. The lack of new stuff has been hard to take, so I'm going to rejoice now in the return of Smallville, since I forgot earlier. I believe I also forgot about the Brainiac 5 reference (horrors). That had me giggle happily. But even if I could change my vote, I wouldn't. Lois, I missed you!

I thought Alexz Johnson was the best actor of the Legion, although I did like the whole cast of Legion, Alexz was the standout. And don't understand why Doomsday has to rest in the fortress for 12 days to become Doomsday, it looked like he was done in Bride. And they never did show if Jor-el is back in the Fortress. And the preveiws for next week didn't tell me anything about next week. Thank godness for Kryptonsite spoilers.

The best thing I loved in this episode was Allison's act as Brainiac, it was just briliant! She did it so perfectly just like the real Brainiac played by James Marsters. The way she talked, the way she walked and her face expressions, it was all pure Brainiac!
I remember when Tom Welling played Lionel Luther in season 4 in the episode Transference, he did a good job as well but Allison's act as Brainiac was so much better.

It was okay, there were things I liked (Allison as Brainiac and the "heart breaking decision" that the show has set up) and a lot I didn't like (Lightning Lad was HORRIBLE. Anything that came out of this kid's mouth felt unbelievable) but overall it was a good episode to come back from the hiatus, but not as good as everyone else says, although I guess I'm in the minority, I don't see the greatness in this season that everyone else does.
It was a good episode but no episode will get a 10 out of my unles its the last episode and they do it good. It got an 8 from me, good seeing the legion and some flight in it but bummed out that chloe got her memory back as i thought her not knowing about clarks secret was just them starting to fade her out as she is not in the superman methologies therefore she has to die or leave smallville sooner or later.
But anyway back to the point yea was a good episode they could of done some better things in it but im starting to look for more forward to bulletproof next weeks episode, i think in the trailer we see that lana and tess have a fight and you see tess at the end talking to the mirror as if there is a camera and they show lex watching video footage once again.... exciting shiz nit!

Jade! Your review! I loved it! lol. You have me smiling ear to ear over here. Will you be sticking with that format? I could only imagine how painstaking it is to list all your thoughts to almost everything in the episode. Superb effort that was worth every word. That was great! :D
Cedric:
Your review was great! Every week I always look forward to reading your Smallville reviews, because not only do you take the time to write them, but you also take the time to put into words how you feel about these Smallville episodes.
Your reviews are so funny and so entertaining, but that's just being you: Cedric. I gave your review a 10, even though this was not my favorite episode, but you're worth it, Cedric. You can take a boring episode, and make it come to life, make it sound interesting, and even humorous.
Well done, Cedric!
I only wish that your review was longer, because I hate it when your reviews come to an end! I was hoping for a Chloe rant: After Clark's secret was given back to her! I love Cedric rants!
Thank you Joanne, that means a lot. I'm sticking with the longer review format and trying to add even more of my personality in it all.
I sort of did give a rant about her remembering the secret again, though I thought it was best to do it in a video. That scream that Superman gave in the youtube clip? That was my reaction to Chloe remembering the secret. My neighbor actually called me up to ask if everything was OK.
I can't fly, but if I could I would have reversed time and kicked every member of PS3 in the jaw for making Abyss completely worthless, save for the Jor-El and Clark scenes. It was horrible.
Cedric
Your review was hilarious and I agree with you. I especially liked all the Star Wars references (yes, I am a Star Wars geek as well as Superman) I especially liked your beginning. Well done, and great review.
Thanks Matt. I was really close to doing a Star Trek review but I decided on Star Wars at the last moment. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.

Hi Cedric. Your review was awesome (as usual), but the first part was incredible! Uncle Cedric and the kids were amazing! I couldn’t stop laughing reading that.
Thanks Lis! So what do you think? Do I have "father of the year" potential? lol. My future kids are so screwed. And my poor future wife...
***Cedric--just read your review #201. Superb! Thanks for making me laugh--many times.

Cedric..
i love your review :)
is so funny to read it :D
Only the best for you Alex! And the year is just getting started. Lana has only begun to joked about.
Cedric, I have never laughed so hard reading something in this board. I loved everything, specially the Star Wars lines.
I really liked the Legion and the Zombie Bride was fine... though I think she should die. MUAHAHHA
That was the funniest post you've read on the board? :: puffs chest out:: Thanks Clara. That means a lot. :D I'll try my all to best that in the coming weeks.
Yet again, your review doesn't disappoint Cedric. It made me laugh so hard that my husband started reading over my shoulder.
You distracted him from Lego Star Wars-now that's talent!
Really Kelly? LOL. Thanks! Hopefully I didn't upset the Big Guy too much. Twas all in humor!
And Cedric wrote another cracker review - thank you, O Great One :D
Thanks Sarah! And I agree with your review! Something was missing from this episode. It was good but I came away from it feeling like it could have been great, but wasn't. I was a disapointed. Maybe it was my insanely high expectations that did me in. I was expecting a "top 10 for the series" type of episode and didn't get that.
Cedric,your review is hilarious:lol:
Thanks Marcella :D
Cedric... oh Cedric... your review is finally here! It's made of pure win. As always.
Hey hey Patricia! Thank you, and I see you gave it a 7. I watched the episode 4 times before I wrote my review just to make sure that the disapointment I felt was genuine and not an immediate reaction type of thing. I liken this episode to Odyssey, in that while it was good- some elements could have been wrote better to give it that epic feeling. Identity is still tops for me this season.
And I totally did say say out loud "I can't reach through the TV screen" as if Chloe could hear me lol.
Cedric, this review is awesome. I especially loved this part! May the force be with you!
Thanks and may the Force be with you too Michelle!
Come on, Ceddie old man, we know Lana will never realize Lois is the one for him. Oh, dude, I just has a horrible thought. Then off Lana goes, her own hubris causing her to go from famous to footnote in the myth's history  Great review as always, Cedric.
You know, Anakin slaughtered Sand People for far less of a crime.
I don't want that beast pushing Clark toward Lois because I know she'll do it in some self sacrificing, condecending, pitying way that will just piss me off. Clark needs to man up and figure that out on his own. Lana and Chloe's opinion on his romantic interest in Lois should be kept to themselves. Clark should be mature enough to decide who he wants to be with without their asses trying to think for him, again.
So here's hoping that nightmare doesn't come true Batfinx! And thanks!
Thank you Ann, glad you liked it. And I missed Lois too. She really adds that "it" to an episode that really gives it that extra spark. Oh I can only imagine the possibilities if she were in this episode. But instead I got stuck with "omg Chloe and Lana may or will have great destinies" talk that made me want to hurl. Both of them combined don't equal the destiny of Lois. And I am really sick of the show trying to make these characters out to be an even bigger influence on Clark then his parents and his future wife. Its bull, and everybody knows it. I could rant about just that, but I'll leave it be for now.
And glad you like this kitten avi! Thanks again!
Cedric, yes I do really like cats, just thought it very cute and original! We even named on of our cats Spock, in the past. :D
Great choice for a name! Just do me a favor and never ever name one of them Cedric. I might drop dead. :p

Fallen One, although I admit to liking your humor, your crapping on Chloe time and time again is about as nauseating as the continual Lana admiration portrayed on SV. However, you are entitled to your opinion just as much as anyone else and I know it will continue.
So . . .
I echo your sentiment about WHY they don't use/waste the talent of SW. He has brought SO much to this program and NEEDS to be used more!
As for Lois and her destiny, I'm not going to argue/debate over that one. I'll just say on SV, Chloe (Lana perhaps on a very small scale) has had a huge part in helping, encouraging, and believing in Clark. Sure, she's made mistakes, but who hasn't? On the whole though, she is the one (other than his parents) who has done the most for him and I do not understand how that can be viewed so negatively by some of the fans.
The only thing I can figure out when it comes to the negativity against Chloe -- she's not 'iconic', she's not part of the mythos. Blah, blah, blah! She may not be 'iconic' or part of the mythos asfar as the comic books are concerned, but she IS part of SV, and a vital part at that. She's an important part of Clark's life, and that's most likely not going to go anywhere as long as SV is on.
There are PLENTY of things that make me want to hurl when it comes to SV, but Chloe and her story line (other than Chimmy) aren't part of it. She is one of the best things about SV and I'm glad she's still around making you want to hurl.

I don't think the episode was bad. I enjoyed the LOS and AM was great.
I could have done without Lana worshipping and Clana scenes but overall it was funny and fun.
I do think there will be a day Lana will realize Lois is for Clark. I have hope that day will come b/c in some form TPTB have to prove that Lois isn't 2nd best but his destiny and soulmate is Lois period. This can't happen without Lana realizing what she had with CK wasn't the real deal.
Beside feeling sad the LOS never heard of Chole. I was happy with the fact the LOS mention Lois Lane 1st on that list and Lana 2nd :D. I wonder why Clark didn't realize this.
As for Lois not returning next week after Chole suppose to releave her. Clark has to wonder why Lois is distancing herself after the almost kiss. "LANA". Lois is proctecting herself and those wall are up. Good Luck Clark ;)
It didn't bother me that LOS didn't mention his destiny with Lois b/c they couldn't risk messing that up, but to give Lana hope about Clana returning. :Puke:
Why mention anything about Lana's destiny in the 1st place since she was mention to Clark in the list anyway. Lana part of the reason he becomes the super hero we want him to be. Well just as long Lana isn't the whole reason.
Clark has to realize this alone, grow, train and educate himself, & mature into the hero we all can't wait to see. This decision is Clark's alone and his reason have to be b/c he loves himself, earth and loves the people he lives among and desires peace.
This shouldn't have been tied in with Clana.

Yes Tom also did a great work in transference. I compared it to that episode because I loved it as well. I'm just saying that I think Allison did a better job playing Brainiac than Tom did playing Lionel. But that's just my opinion:). I respect your opinion as well;)

I haven't finished my review so I'm not sure what score I'll eventually give it, but I loved this episode.
Glen Winter turned in yet another very strong outing and Geoff Johns can come in and write freelance anytime he wants.
I wasn't sure I liked his act breaks that much on first viewing, but I thought the episode overall was well-written and had good character arcs for everyone, including Chloe, Clark, Lana and the Legion members.
http://deephousepage.com/smilies/thumb.gif
However, I do have a major beef with my CW affiliate!
They started showing the series in full screen. They hadn't done that since season four, the bastards!
The only reason I can think is that it has something to do with the upcoming digital broadcasting deadline, but why change how it gets broadcast on Satellite?
:(
I was a very unhappy camper when I was watching it live, but very happy I got the iTunes copy so I can see Gord Verhuel's widescreen photography the way it was intended to be viewed...

I agree that Legion still gave too much credence to Lana Lang. The mention of her destiny should have been nothing more than an offhanded remark or passing comment - as if to say "this is not about you, but about Kal El" - I am not what many term a "shipper" - each woman has a place in Clark's life. What I want to see is transition - permanent transition - not the kind we get on Smallville where Clark seemingly moves on from Lana to Lois, only to go back and revisit Lana again and again. He needs to move on so that he can truly connect with Lois.
Why didn't Clark seem fazed by the fact that Chloe was not mentioned but Lois was? I would have liked even a small comment about Lois when the Legion mentioned the names from history. Clark could have just interjected one word - "Lois?" - with his trademark Clark-like puzzled look that belies discomfort or anxiety. that would have been enough to at least show he is thinking about her.
Unfortunately, they spent a great deal of time on Lana.
I watched Superman TAS "New Kids in Town" - the animated version of "Legion", and I must say that it left me a bit more satisfied than Legion. I thought Legion was good, but I'm still waiting for Clark to let loose with some real physical action. I would have liked to see more of a battle, or at least some major disaster caused by Brainiac that Clark had to stop with a show of his powers. I appreciate the character development and all, but sometimes, what keeps people tuning in is some real action in which Clark shows his power. That is part of the appeal of Superman - he can do things normal people cannot do.
Legion was good however...good enough. Lightning Lad (instead of Chameleon Boy as in SupermanTAS) was inspired, especially when fighting a living computer. Cosmic Boy was DEAD on - serious about his role. They missed the boat with Saturn Girl - if there was EVER a reasonable opportunity for a mind wipe, it was with her.
As for Chloe, I felt like it was the beginning of the end for her...a long goodbye. I actually felt a bit sad. She has helped Clark become who he is as much as anyone else, and it seems history is discarding her. It was a nice touch that Clark wouldn't discard her that way.
Overall - it was good. I would have kept everything pretty much the same, but removed alot of the Lana business and replaced it with some great action sequences.
Great post! I agree!

Outstanding post man. Well thought out and nicely written. I enjoyed reading it a lot. I completely agree that there was too much focus on Lana and I also wanted Clark to question why they had heard of Lois as well. I also agree that Chloe's time is coming to an end. Maybe not this season, but it will definitely happen by the time the show ends. They did the same thing with Johnathan. They kept hinting at it, even in Reckoning itself with "I'll always need you dad" right up until it happened.
Simply one of the best posts if not the best post I've read about Legion. I agree 100% about everything you said! Thank you!:)

10/10 Did anyone notice Alicia Baker in the episode?
What I would love to see is Clark try to use the Legion ring that they "reprogrammed" for time travel only to try go backwards and save Alicia... he would still have to fail of course and learn that in SV you just can't change fate... But bring back Sarah Carter for one last hooorah!! I still think she has shown the best chemistry with Clark pre-Lois that is.

I thought this episode was very poor. Badly written, badly acted, badly thought out. It's a real dip in the quality of the current season. If the show continues like this then it won't be too long before it is cancelled rather than the producers deciding to end it themselves. I think this weak episode was a real shame and I hope it improves greatly.

as much as i HATED it when clark took chloe's memories away i have to say giving them back to her so quickly and so easily feels like a cop-out. abyss was really sad. and it completely took me by shock when clark asked jor-el to take chloe's memories. and i was upset (to put it lightly) cuz i thought they were phasing her out. still, the whole thing kept me on the edge of my seat. and it's good when a show can do that. especially in its 8th year. then after that episode i was curious to see how chloe's character would change. what were they gonna do with her? now, she's back to normal and .. i dont know .. it seems like a wasted opportunity to move the show along.
besides that, i dont really know what to say about the episode. it didn't really get me excited. i enjoyed justice a whole lot better. but part of the problem could be the 2 month gap between episodes. the huge momentum of the first 10 episodes was completely lost for me.

I expected this episode to be a lot better than i actually thought. Most of the lines by the Legion were played too dull or forced. The whole "kill Chloe to get rid of Brainiac" thing got really old really fast. Too much Clana. And Jimmy's ok???? wtf? Last time I checked, he was...almost dead?
I was sorely disappointed. I thought it was going to be a lot better. Not bad, but not one of those "OMG" episodes that the CW was making it to be.

To the new people, SmallsFan247, Flying Skyward, frankenerie, farview, candor, Kandorman, claudiss, and Saturn Girl, welcome!
I'm not really a newbie. I joined 3 years ago, posted 3 times and then my computer died. lol
But thanks for the welcome! :)

LONG LIVE CHLOE SULLIVAN!
ITA with this.

And I wouldn't even want to know how much it was marked up. Good luck and hope you can get a good deal.
From a twin to a supertwin, I'm looking forward to your review as well, triplet. :D
You're a twin? Cool...
I haven't really met any other triplets myself, aside from my sisters naturally, but I have a friend who has twins and there are other twins in my family but no other sets of triplets.
As for this episode's write up: I haven't finished my review yet, but it'll probably get a 4.5... not quite perfect, but I found it highly enjoyable for the most part.
Some of the dialogue was clunky, and I had a few problems with a couple of things that happened...
*shrug*
Not perfect, but for a freelance script its far above average so I hope Geoff comes back if there is a season 9.
I loved the three legion members and Allison was terrific as Chloe as Brainiac...

I really enjoyed Legion for a variety of reasons:
1) I LOVED Chloe, and there was plenty of her, both possessed and not possessed by Brainiac. It was amazing how gorgeous and amazing she was, even when she was inhabited by an evil artificial intelligence -- oh, I'm sorry, "the Brain Interactive Construct."
2) I actually could stand Lana... no, strike that, I LIKED her. A LOT. These writers actually succeeded in making Lana likable again.
3) Clark standing up for Chloe, again and again, and Lana, too.
4) THE LEGION!!! Being a comic geek, seeing the Legion made me super-pumped -- those were great incarnations of all three of the Legionnaires, even though I think Saturn Girl could've used a bit more personality.
All in all, a fantastic episode, with good foreshadowing and plot development.

P.S. Did I mention I love that Chloe knows Clark's secret again? HOORAY!!!

7/10 for me.
I like that they practically told CK what he'll be wearing and what he will be doing. Hopefully the series can now whizz along and and we'll see him becoming more and more Superman.

One of my favorite episodes so far. Incredible effects with the lightning lad and generally.
Also, Saturn Girl is quite beautiful. Other members of the Legion are cool also.
Great episode !
But get rid of Lana !

A well written and performed episode, grade would be higher if Lana wasn't worshipped so much... but still 8/10!

9/10 one of the best episodes of Smallville ever. Absolutely loved it.
I just got through watching the commentary for this episode on the Blu ray and I gotta say Geoff Johns is so cool. He just knows the comic book world so well and I cant wait to see Absolute Justice, this guys writing is spot on. I really think he should write the next Superman movie, he just knows the characters so well.

Legion marks the late, long overdue debut of the Legion of Superheroes, who should have been used during the first four seasons when Clark was in high school. Better late than never. This is Geoff Johns' first episode as he seems to like writing the Legion more than Clark or anyone else.

Nothing annoyed me more in GJ's most recent Secret Origins series that he decided to spend half a comic on the Legion(only 2 of the 6 issues focus on Clark life in Smallville and I felt doing Legion was a waste of space, since it should be a side story not a huge part of Clark's origin).

If Superman: Secret Origin is to be made into either a live-action or animated film, I don't see the second part with the Legion being used because it's a story onto itself and should have concentrated on young Clark's development as a hero. Basically, Smallville is not the right show for him to showcase other DCU. He should have wrote for Batman: Brave and Bold instead.
