The end shot of Chloe and Davis/Doomsday looked rather familiar to me. And I couldn't get the classic film La Belle et La Bete (Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast from 1946) out of my head.
So, I decided to watch it again. I remembered studying it in college. Well anyway, I have to say it's one of the best films ever made. In the film, there's a long sequence where Beauty sees the Beast, screams and faints. Just like when Chloe sees Doomsday for the first time. The Beast walks over to Beauty and gently picks her up. In a very long sequence, the Beast picks up Beauty and carries her inside the castle. Shot by shot it looks EXACTLY like the shot of Doomsday and Chloe. Smallville shortens it a little bit. But it is the same scene. The way he walks, the way he carries her. The pause as he looks down at her. He gently lays her on a bed. Then, he brings his face close to her. (The SAME shot of Doomsday leaning in toward Chloe). Then Beauty opens her eyes.
I mean, the look of Doomsday was clearly inspired by the make up of the Beast in this film. They look very similar.
There is no doubt in my mind that Smallville was paying homage to this film, that many consider to be one of the best films of all time.
I really think that this kind of proves their intent. Davis loves Chloe, not Brainiac. And Chloe will fall in love with the beast that is Doomsday, as well as Davis who is the "Prince."
I really recommend everyone to check out that scene. Do a search on youtube for the film (someone put the whole film up; the scene is about and 2 in a half minutes into the clip and is part 4/9) and compare that scene with Chloe and Doomsday/Davis (also up on youtube). It's the exact same sequence.
Doomsday/Davis is in love with Chloe and is not just drawn to Brainiac.
I really think Chloe and Davis are the Beauty/Beast, Edward/Bella, Mick/Beth, Phantom/Christine, Phoebe/Cole, etc... of Smallville. Think about it. Edward in Twilight sees himself as a monster but he's a good guy, just like Davis. Edward has killed people in the past. But Bella sees the Beauty in the vampire (the beast) and loves him anyway. Chloe, like Bella, is fascinated by the extraordinary and not scared by it. For those who have read the book or seen the film, Chloe ending up with Jimmy would be like Bella ending up with Mike Newton! :)
Other shows/movies like Moonlight, Phantom of the Opera, etc... have paid homage to this great film. So now that Smallville is paying homage to this famous scene it really says something about their possible direction with Chloe and Davis.
If they are smart they will continue down this very intelligent direction!
Honestly the episode pays homage to 3 things:
1) King Kong
2) Bride of Frankenstein
3) Beauty and the Beast
To take Chloe and Davis and compare them to these classics, really says a lot about how they view the relationship between them. It's definitely not just a Brainiac/Doomsday connection. There's more there. Why else would they homage it? It would be weird if the song "Don't take your love away from me," was playing to Doomsday carrying Brainiac.
Smallville really might be able to get new viewers if they advertise this Beauty and the Beast element of the show. I've been noticing these themes between Chloe and Davis for a while, but that last scene just clinched it.
