Why is it so many people moan that action scenes are'nt long enough in Smallville, don't
they know they're watching a show with a budget of 2 - 5 mil per episode, so their is only
so much they can do in each episode, like Bride, I thought that Doomsday looked
amazing and yes like a lot of people i would have liked to have seen a larger fight between
Clark and Doomsday, but the truth is we'll never get the kind of knock down brawl we are
hoping for because the budget just isn't large enough to give us one.
Only a big screen budget would ever give us the kind of fight scene between CK and DD
that we are all hoping for but that is more than likely never going to happen.
Everyone needs to stop complaining about action scenes being to short and start
congratulating the crew of Smallville on doing such an excellent job on it's special effects
because i remember the day of Lois and Clark:the adventure of Superman, and how
terrible the action and effects were on that show.
In closing i just want to say well done to the effects creators on Smallville for doing such
a good job over the years, and to the CW, why don't you raise the budget so they can do
an even better job!

Bravo, well said, I think the SV special effects are one of the best on TV. Superspeed, hearing, heat vision I really think they are well done, as those effects are easy to make ridiculous. I loved Doomys hand scene!

It seems to me that Supernatural has a larger budget than Smallville.

I agree. I think SV does amazingly well with the budget they've been reduced to living on.

I believe it's understood around these boards that SV is limited to a budget. They do the best they can with what they can. The problem is IMO that Superman/Clark doesn't have alot of villians to pose a challange. So the all the token villians are easily dispatched by Clark with a supertoss here and a supertoss there. Now SV has taken some steps in bringing in characters like Titan, Zod, Brainiac and now Doomsday to pose a physical challange to Clark. I'm sure we haven't seen the last of DD and Clark superfight. It can only be better than what was seen.

Hmm...$2-$5 million. It sorta matches the audience.
Does the studio give them $1/person?

We all know there is budget for the show. You can tell the wardrobe and hair are cheap. They even use hand me downs. I think Lara worn one of Lana's top in "Blue". Chloe wore one of Lana's jacket and Chloe did not fit in it.

I can't say I vouch for cheap wardrobe....the jeans worn are usually $200 each That's not even inexpensive in my book. And the girls sharing clothes is just what teenage girls and roommates do. I've shared dresses with friends, especially fancy clothes that are seldom worn. It's great to have a roommate that is similar in size and taste to yours.
I'd say you see the budget when you know that the scene would have been better with more sfx, but they are not there. Actually I find it more amazing than not what they are able to do on a weekly series. Go Smallville!

I thought the budget was 700 thou per episode? Down from $1 million last season.
Either way, the effects are just as good as even Heroes and sometimes better and even used more wisely in certain scenarios. And sometimes they can be just as good as a blockbuster film. Heroes has so much money per episode that they can have Claire's biological mom and uncle light their hands with fire for no reason three times an episode. Also, I heard Heroes has $4 million for each episode.

That's because they the Cw spends all it's money on Gossip Girl and Beverly Hills 90210 which have lower ratings.....smart huh!! SV congrats on doing a fantastic job. maybe if the Cw didn't show the shoes on the other two shows our budget would go up!!

I think the ultimate fight between clarky boy and doomsday is coming anyway! Is CGI really that expensive anyway? I see all these video games with sometimes hours of crazy CGI made just for it.

I have experience in various cgi software, i can tell you first hand that they did a great job not using cgi for DD. At best they'd get something like the Incredible Hulk, costume design will always be superior to give off that realistic approach as long as the costume design is done right for the right setting. In other words if you want a scary looking costume you design it that way, not the opposite like a power ranger villain or something with a more cartoonish look to it. Even with a larger budget this in my opinion was the best choice, since cgi doesn't look real enough, will always have that hint of cartoon style to it, and the fluid/movement will have defects and not be smooth like if the person/character was being filmed right there. Time is what costs $$$, once you buy the cgi software your creations are endless depending on your imagination and creativity, so your paying for the time it takes them to design/render a character and then edit it into the film, while trying to make it look as real as possible, the flaws are noticeable, everything with costume is much easier and saves $$$, the only cost would be creating a good looking DD costume, which sees good from what i could tell, but this goes back to having the right designer for the costume.
I admit i'm one of those people that complain, be even i have to realize smallville packs 20 something episodes in a year for us fans, while trying to incorporate so many ideas in such a short period of time (1hr an episode). So we can't expect miracles, i'm sure theres tons more dialogue or scenes the writers would love to put in, but they only have so much time. I say to create that many episodes, with different storylines isn't an easy task, its not like having years to write, cast, and start filming for a big screen movie. When you look at it that way, and you compare some of the SFX on smallville to other big screen movies, (Superman Returns), alot of times smallvilles looks on par and in some instances better than what i seen in that movie, having a larger budget would play a major role but you can only cram so much in a 1hr segment.
They can definately have a good length brawl with clark and DD, there wouldn't be any use of the budget other than a choreographed fight which they could drag on so it gives the fans a good show, i could only see this happening once Davis is no more and DD biologic form stays dormant, but i can't see clark having this big fight we wanna see if its still davis, cause in clarks eyes he wouldn't wanna hurt davis...somehow davis has to be no more or gone in order for clark not to hold back, even with Titan he held back until he realized it was him or Titan, so he had to turn it up a notch and save himself first. Davis origin needs to be explained and how its tied in with DD and how this happened, mybe this will be explained when clark goes back to the fos and finds out brainiac took it over as well as chloe, maybe then we'll understand how Davis came to be or if he was born an infant like a normal human.

I think there's enough action to go around for everyone!
The only thing I complained about was how drawn out Clana was!
Season 8 has been fabulous to say the least, and the Doomsday fight was perfect!

we can still have longer better fights. the fights dont have to envolve knocking over sky scrapers and throwing trains. but how about more than one punch or even something better than a 3rd grade shoving match lol. I know they are on a budget but still.
