Okay, this has been hyped as the best episode of smallville in a long time. Did it live up to the hype?

Okay, I'll edit "ever" in above post.

My guess is that it won't live up to the hype. There's so much surrounding this episode that if there is one little disappointment, it will have a huge impact on how the entire episode is viewed.

Good point. So, before the episode airs, let's rate the hype for this episode. And pose the question, does advertising = hype, does internet and media (insider driven) buzz = hype, or some combination of that?

I'd say the hype is a 9, and it's mostly based on internet/media (Insider, key player hype). I don't watch the WB much, so I can't really rate the advertising.

I don't think whether it lives up to the hype is the question...it's more whether it'll live up to its potential - which it has a ton of, with the juggling of so many major plot threads (Doomsday, Lana, Clois, Chimmy wedding, etc).

YES. This was made prematurely. I was bored yesterday and saw others putting up polls, so I thought "I WANNA MAKE THE BEST POLL EVER."

Unfortunately, that didn't pan out, and this is what we're left with.

I think that this episode lived up to the hype. Going into this season, I never thought that we would see this much of Doomsday by episode 10, so the writers have surprised me there. While Doomsday was in only a couple of scenes, it was good enough for me at this point.

11-20-2008, 09:03 PM
Well... not really.

Don't get me wrong, good episode. Well directed, well acted. But when they hyped up 'the last five minutes'- the last 5 minutes were more confusing than anything.

If the reveal was supposed to be Lex? Well, I'm sorry I'm not gonna get enthusiastic when i know that the actor left the show. If he's gone and has no interest in coming back... I'd prefer they didn't bring him up.

The best five minutes title belongs to the one where Lex found out Clark's secret when he smashed the car and then got put in the asylum.

smallvillerocks45
11-20-2008, 09:34 PM
I thought it was a very good episode, but I was also over spoiled. I felt like I had already seen the whole half hour of the show... and I just couldn't wait to get passed the clips I'd already seen so that I could get to the good stuff at the end. I wasn't disappointed. I can't wait to see how Clark discovers he needs to head on back to the fortress; I can't wait to see how he is going to defeat a full blown Doomsday, and since Chloe is obviously still possessed, I can't wait to find out if she will regain her memories!!!

The bummer: there are no new episodes until January...
The upside: It's an early birthday present. (my b-day is 01/16)

I watched the Director's Cut and looked at the promo pictures... so I didn't get all the way into the hype or spoilers. I wasn't disappointed... it just didn't go above and beyond expectations the way that really awesome episodes do.

The Lana stuff... not with Clark just her... secret mission and Oliver's mission to kill Lex... that wasn't very well executed. *shrug*

It was a good one. I don't comment much on here, but I have to say, this one sucked me in.
A couple of thoughts:

1. So you can have MONSTERS on Smallville but not "the suit" -- this is getting kind of lame.

2. How many people knew the minute Clois was ready to kiss, that Lana was going to walk in? I paused it and bet my wife. She didn't take the bet... dang it!

3. The Oliver scenes were great this time. Excellent.

4. The kryptonite in the loft was just bad, they made us wait the entire episode for a "fight" then copped out.

5. There better be one heck of a battle when this starts up again. I mean mind blowing action. Yes, the Doomsday costume was a little hokey in places, but it's TV, so I can let that slide.

1. So you can have MONSTERS on Smallville but not "the suit" -- this is getting kind of lame.

Well... this is a show about pre-"suit" Clark. If anything, I'd think you would complain about "no flights". Consider it a miracle the Superman alias is being seeded at all by this point, tights/"suit" ain't gonna happen anytime soon, even if a Season 9 happens.

4. The kryptonite in the loft was just bad, they made us wait the entire episode for a "fight" then copped out.

It was a cop-out, but nice consistency with earlier in the episode and lesson to Clark that he shouldn't have Kryptonite laying around all willy-nilly. In any case, I like that a fight with Doomsday is being saved, gives us something to look forward to for the latter half of the season (much like the Clark/Zod & Clark/Bizarro battles of the Seasons 5 & 6 cliffhangers). Unlike enemies Clark's battled in this show like Myxzpitlik, Brainiac, Zod, Bizarro, and even Lex, Doomsday is the only one whom has proven to kill him in the genuine comics, hence why they're being careful I think.

Lana's entrance kicked ass. Literally lol. I'm not sure I'm embracing the new attitude Lana has towards Clark but I'm sure there's a reason for that. I'm not a fan of stealing concepts from other movies/series so the whole Cloverfield ripoff sucked in my book.

Such as...once again it was too cluttered with characters and that is what made certain parts feel rushed and storylines choppy. IMO, Oliver wasn't needed, but since they tied his storyline into Lana's, and she had to return in this one, I can see why he had to be included.

Secondly, it was extremely anti-climatic - that one second preview we saw after Abyss pretty much summarizes the entire Clark/Doomsday showdown.

I didn't expect a fight. From the teaser trailer of Bride, I expected that to be the final minutes of the episode. I figured Doomsday would make a quick appearance in Birde, but the actual showdown will need at least half an episode to take, not the final few minutes.

A good show, especially Lois opening up and revealing her softer feminine side. Clark's reaction when Doomsday arrived was horrible in that he didn't react at all and allowed the creature to enter the barn. Let's remember Clark could have used his X-ray vision to see him on the roof when he heard banging and he could have attacked Doomsday on the roof long before he had a chance to get in the barn. Why do the writers write such dumb episodes? Where is Mrs. Kent and Mr. Sullivan? Not even a mention of either of them. And why did they not marry in the house or better yet, the Talon!

----- Added 2 Minutes later -----

I absolutely agree! It makes me very sad that Chloe will not get back to normal. The only thing that would keep me watching is the Lois and Clark thing.

Souper MAN!

As a fan of the Doomsday comic arc, I have really enjoyed how they've introduced him into Smallville (and Davis, of course) and definitely loved this episode. I'm pretty sure when the wedding was crashed by the special guest, Clark was shocked to see what this dude could do (everything from the long jumps he heard, to the snarls & growls, the damage he caused). Since saving the day has been getting more regular for Clark, he was even more shocked to have his punch stopped by one hand AND THEN get whacked into loft of the barn. I was surprised that he didn't get up and try to chase Doomsday down but I looked at the clock and realized that there was like five minutes left in the episode and I knew they'd leave us hanging big time at that point.

However, one of my favorite scenes was when Clark read Jimmy's vows out loud and Lois' face just lit up, thinking he was actually speaking to her. She was looking a little extra-beautiful if you ask me...

it was better than i thought it was going to be, but not because of the bits that were hyped, as the bits that werent

i.e. the doomsday moment, the clois stuff and the wedding itself were a bit of a 'meh'

but Lana's maturity and secrecy, Lex's apparent comeback, and chloeiac... well they made the episode top notch for me

For me personally it was a fairly decent episode but it had something missing, something that I can't pin down... maybe it's Tess Mercer! I can't believe they let her out from the mid-season finale. I'm a bit annoyed about this also: Do we have to wait till the last episode of the season to have all the regulars appear in one episode? Seriously it's only seven people so is it that hard? I mean Tess isn't back for Legion so 3 eps without her? I think that's too much. She should have been in this outing espicially since it had all the Lex-oriented stuff... so why not? Also, the PS3 seriously need to make their minds about Oliver: so once he is a drunk, then he snaps out of it and resumes his GA duties (which are protecting lives) than he goes back to moping about his parents and is capable of killing? Maybe that's what bodered me about this ep. Looking forward to Legion though.

I liked the way in which it was done and certain parts of the episode, but I kinda thought the main story, the wedding and Doomsday stuff was kinda weak. I liked all the Clois interaction and Ollie's chit-chat with Lois about Clark and that's really all that I completely like about it. Lana's return was rather lackluster, although I did love her new look, she was lookin' good. I can't put my figure on it, but I wasn't drawn in to this episode. However, I did enjoy the last scene's reveal with Lex all hooked up, at least we now know he's alive and that is great news.

I agree. The Lois and Clark scenes were very soap operish as well as Chimmy. I only enjoyed Davis in this episode. Bride was great as soon as Doomsday interrupted the wedding. Should have been more build up to that moment rather than have this wedding episode be about pimping Clois. I did love the end in the fortress. That was just stunning.
