I'm starting to believe that they all have the same ability.
But I'm also thinking environment has ALOT to do with it.
Just think back to Psychology 101, i think its 90% of who we are is based on environment?
so the powers, how they work, is based on how the person was raised?
Think about it, sounds somewhat interesting doesn't it?

Gabe doesn't seem like he was raised in a violent way(his mom's too sweet) but he still resorted gaining powers via brute force. So there goes that theory.

When i speak about Sylar, i mean he was raised a sa clock makers son.
Always trying to figure out how to restore those watches back to functionality. Always trying to fix, figure out whats broken or how it ...ticks...

Yeah, it makes sense. Maybe not necessarily the environment part, but the same power completely makes sense, based on their attitude maybe.
Peter wanted to be special, wanted to help people, so he ended up with a power that gives him a ton of powers.
Sylar wanted to be special so bad it became an obsession, and it gave him a hunger to be special so much that he ended up taking powers by force. Now he's learning to do it the same way Peter does.
And Arthur, he wants powers because he's greedy (Thats how it seems anyways) so he completely removes the power from the person so he's better than them.
EDIT: Actually, the environment part might make a lot of sense. Maybe Sylar got his power the way it was because his mom supposedly tried to drown him, so one of the first things he knew was violence, so his power works by violence. Then maybe they can all do it the other ways if they want, they just have to learn. (Explaining his violence-empathy change)

I know its OVERLY speculating, but it might be something the writers will touch on later on, maybe in the later volumes.
If they brainstorm, they can make it really interesting.

Well I think environment definitely played a role with Sylar. Last episode if you looked at Sylar apt it was filled with books, no pictures, all clean and neat. So I think Sylar could only gain powers because he never really felt much emotion because he read alot, so he never was able to feel empathy.
I'm still wondering if Sylar's ability is his own. Is it the same as Peter's now or what?
