I do agree it was a very touching moment in the Fortress, but it has to end this way. In the future, it's Superman, not Chloe&Superman. Wiping her memory is a good way for her to back off. If they went with an alternative solution, which is killing her off, they would probably lose half the fanbase. I'm more Superman fan than Chlark though, so they would keep me if that happened.
After this episode, I still enjoy PS3's work. This was a significant leap forward. In this episode, I did not see Clark Kent, I see Superman.

Nope. They got guts for changing things around, and so far its all been for the better. This is how Superman is supposed to be.

I wish they had taken over when MR was still there.
I'm not convinced that this is a permanent thing, and even if it is, as much as I don't really like that particular plot twist, they've done a fantastic job so far, and that's more than enough to get my seal of approval. They're a big step up from the AlMiles days.

i would have appreciated it better had it been brainiac that caused her wipe and clark just accepting it.
It is nice that he is on his own, but having HIM be the tool that destroys chloes mind?
I don't like it.
Glad the story gets to move forward, but this is NOT how it should have been done.

I don't hate them. I think it was an incredibly brave thing they did. And I never go into a season of any show expecting to like 100% of everything that happens on it.
Even though I'm not terribly happy with this, I can't help but wonder what they're going to do next. So I can't say they haven't succeeded at their jobs!

In my opinion they made it work, I'm sure if AlMiles had done this it wouldn't have been half as good. I mean Clark did it for good reason with PS3 and not the selfish 'I don't want you knowing anymore because you deserve it' way it could have gone. I mean he just wanted to repay Chloe for all the times she's helped her so much by giving her a chance to move on and be happy with Jimmy (and now she doesn't know she won't be lying to Jimmy so he won't be completely worried that Chloe has feelings for him as she won't be spending so much time helping Clark out secretly).
So he not only did it selflessly (because now he remembers her knowing but she doesn't, giving us the good kind of pained Clark angst Tom Welling is so good with) but also did it to allow Chloe to be happy after everything she's done. And now Alison Mack can go back to playing happy unburned Chloe like she got to briefly last season in the episode where Clark didn't exist. I mean Chloe looked so happy in the Bride pictures, Chloe hasn't looked that happy in a long time. It's good to see.
I think I like them more for this, I mean I love Chloe knowing. When Chloe found out I was so happy, but now I'm even happier Chloe has forgotten cause she can be happy and Clark can be independant. I don't really care for any of those 'Chloe aint in mythos' reasons for her forgetting, I like it for a purely non-mythos related reason. So yeah go PS3.

I've never cared for there approach to SV much, but last night they just did the unforgivable. Unless they reverse this memory thing, I am going to quit watching the show. There will be no reason to continue tuning in. The Chlark friendship angle was the best part of the show, and if they permanently rip that away from me, I'm done with it.

I agree that PS3 have a pretty big set of balls. Even Souders. The Chloe mindwipe was a big deal, and it took guts. And like they say, no guts, no glory. And this season has been one big glorious ride for Smallville and Clark's transition into the iconic Superman. Clark, in Abyss, acted like more than just a man, but literally a superman.
This season feels like a wonderful dream. And it's not even half way finished yet.

Why not erase everything about her. why leave her blond? lets turn her in to a red head or a goth!!! This is pathetic. i for one will not be watching this pathetic show ever again!!!

I don't like this move if it's permanent.
It's not realist. Chloe fotgets the 4 last years with Clark. It's not the same Chloe.
It's the destruction of Chlark and the character of Chloe.
Now chloe has lost everything. Her job at Daily Planet, Clark, sidekick, Isis, Watchtower, Yaris.
And it's the destruction of the fanbase of Chloe. You don't respect the 7 years fans of Chloe.
Where the fans of Chloe? PS3 erase the memory of the Chloe's fans.

I have absolutely great confidence and love for PS3.
As painstakingly discussed before, I do have strong emotions regarding their "potential" to hold out this level of entertainment throughout the season. But, admittedly, these are based on pre-conceived notions of the spoilers we have for 12-14. Overall, I don't have any doubt that it will be the best season of Smallville ever.
I don't have high expectations for mid-season, and that is probably a good thing, as I'm sure to enjoy it more fully with those low expections in mind.
P.S.
To summarize, Strong concern and negative impression of mid-season remain, however, confidence is high, despite this, that we'll get best season ever.
Although I'm hot & cold on the mind wipe. I LOVE that they are making BOLD, IN-YOUR-FACE decisions regarding the show and playing them out quickly. I'd much rather have things that I LOVE and things I HATE than the producers not taking any chances and providing things I consistently find OKAY.

This is exactly the problem I have with this episode. I feel like it presents such a huge plot hole. Erasing her knowledge of his secret isn't just one small bit of memory. Like this post says....that knowledge would have multiple other memories connected to it that would also need to be erased. This would surely leave an even larger gaping hole in Chloe's memory. And another post asked what about her role as the "watchtower?" If she doesn't know Clark's secret, she can't really serve as part of the Justice League team because it would be difficult to explain her knowing the secrets of the rest of the team members but not Clark. But again....would this be an example of a memory connected to Clark's secret that was also erased?
Also as this post points out, I feel it's such a huge disservice to the character, the story, and the fans. Chloe's relationship with Clark has been built over the past four years on the knowledge of his secret and helping him out. I feel like it's such a major retcon wiping away four years worth of stories and character development like they never happened, and I hate it when that happens in a series...whether it be a comic or tv. It's like the Spider-Man "Brand New Day" or even the proposal that Grant Morrison had a few years back (at least I think it was him) to completely undo the Lois & Clark marriage in the comics and have Lois forget his identity again. You just can't "roll back the clock" like that. These things happened, and now they're a part of these characters' history and interaction with each other. To undo them just erases SO much.
I'm hoping this will only be temporary.
I agree.

Such a silly thread topic. No, the show possesses originality. Don't like it? Simply don't watch it next week...the writing was great... no matter what we find the depreciators- if they killed Chloe ppl would not be happy, wipe her memory of Clark ppl are unhappy, give it back to her then we're back at square one and our show continues static for too many seasons! If you ask me, this was powerful writing..and gave the essence of Superman sacrifice.

I love what they have done! Clark is taking a step in the right direction! :D
Smallville has never stuck entirely to the Superman mythos I don't get why all these people are standing up and saying that this had to be done for Clark to become Superman. That is ridiculous- Clark was already moving forward towards his "destiny"and that didn't have to be achieved by the character assassination of Chloe.

Character assassination? She's still Chloe just minus the Kal-El info. Nothing has really changed with her. She has all of her other memories and knowledge she previously had. She can still help out in a more indirect way. Unless Doomsday does something unforgiving to her later.

She may still be Chloe (or more correctly Chloe-lite)- but the character herself said that Clark's secret had given her meaning and a purpose in life. The memories that she held most dear were taken from her, and what really defines a person is their memories and experiences. Clark by erasing those has significantly changed who she is.

I disagree that is was for her own good- she's an adult and she can make her own decisions and we all know that that wasn't the decision she would have made. The argument that is was for his/her own good is often trumped out when people try to deny others the right to their own free will.

If you think Chloe has lost her definition in the show for you, she's a far stronger character than you give the writers credit for.

You could be right, though I don't doubt that she's still a strong character, for me though they've essentially changed the essence of who she is and the characters growth. It just seems like a cop out and the writers have just hit the rewind button on the last four years.

I think PS3 has done an AMAZING job with the season. To me, they are taking chances with the plot, the characters and the development of their own vision of the saga. That's what I want - if I wanted to watch the same tired plot of CK becoming Superman, I'd watch STM over and over.
This is fresh. It may not make everyone happy but my Lord, look at the ratings (minus Abyss) this season. They have been climbing. For a show in its 8th season that lost two or three of its most popular characters to still draw numbers like it does, it shows that PS3 is doing something right. That "right" is abandoning the Al/Miles soap opera triangles as the main vehicle for this show and concentrating on showing CK becoming Superman.

I wish people would stop taking their snarkiness on the first degree. Not only brothers/sisters but, husbands & wives like to do this aswell. It's not to be taking that seriously,it's only for fun and Lois & Clark know it.If Clark would have taken her snarky comments on the first degree,he would have never talk to her and that would been the end of it.At last,a girl who has the gust to treat differently from the other 2.Chloe loves him too much,it's dangerous for her to be around Clark and Lana takes him from granted.I prefer Lois to these to ladies because her relationship with Clark has no drama,no struggle only pure fun & enjoyment.

To me hate is such a strong word, can't even hate AL/Miles because after all they created Smallville and got me into it for 8 7 years, love PS3 because they have given new energy to the show and well, I am dying to see Bride :) and I still love Chloe, memories or not

I couldn't vote. I don't hate the writers but I don't love them either. In Abyss, I loved all the Chlark they showed! The flashbacks were Epic! I'm also loving the Davis/Doomsday arc. But of course there is the Chloe mindwipe, that I didn't enjoy quite so much. Although I kinda get the feeling they did that just for an interesting twist for the fandom to talk about. I pray those memories will return.

I LOVED the episode, LOVED the end, and LOVED the sacrifice that Clark made. Yet despite my enjoyment, I agree wholeheartedly with this article. I want to make my feelings very plain, in the hopes that fan reaction will sway the outcome of this storyline.
I can appreciate a twist in story, and I can certainly appreciate the emotional conflict this one brought up. I'd be happy to enjoy it every second of the way-- if I could be assured that it would make itself right again. Don't get me wrong, I sort of hate the idea that they would reverse the plot so... cheaply, for lack of a better word. Unfortunately, in a sense, that's what they're already doing by removing Chloe's knowledge of Clark's secret. To decide after 4 seasons that things would be better off without Chloe knowing is no excuse to retract all these years of development.
To those who have said that we aren't looking at the bigger picture, or that we're overreacting, or that this was a poetic move in the series, I would say that it isn't true. The problem is this: Chloe Sullivan is THE hallmark of "Smallville." Not to say that she is the best part or the best character or the cornerstone of the entire series. But she's been the one unique, universally loveable aspect of the series from the beginning. Of course she's not just about Clark, but as someone else already said, her experiences with him have shaped the person she's become.
Leaving her in this partially amnesiac state is, IMO, disrespectful to the character. After 4 seasons of collaborations with Clark, she is now reduced to an unknowingly ignorant has-been. She's been a part of Clark's loop for so long, and now she is somehow supposed to be a mesh of the unsuspecting friend we knew in the first 3 seasons, and the Jimmy-loving woman of the last 2. And to elaborate further: the Kents are gone, Lana's gone, Kara's gone, Lionel's gone. There's no one left now for Clark to confide in, and if/ when Lois enters that circle, she cannot (or should not) replace Chloe. Neither can John Jones. Chloe does not have to be booted to make room for others.
Leaving Chloe in the dust is not the way to transform Clark Kent into Superman. Superman may not traditionally have a Chloe Sullivan, but "Smallville" has never been a traditional Superman. The mythology of this show should not be abandoned entirely, just so Superman can be established. Give me the best of both worlds, or give me death (you get the idea).
First, Chloe was fired from the Daily Planet, and lost the original, defining element of her character: her nose for reporting (aside from the Wall of Weird, which had inevitably evaporated after high school). That was all right. I got over it. Chloe's bigger than just a newspaper job. Then, the meteor ability that had become such a factor of her present development seemed to vanish. Well, I can handle that. It seemed to be making room for something bigger. After that, her long-held feelings for Clark were finally overcome. That's good. They have to be eventually. But on top of everything else, she's now lost her status (literally) on the show. She lost her position as Clark's greatest ally (something even he acknowledged when he stripped her of her memories). Presumably, her Isis career (and, yes, her Justice League ties) is in jeopardy as well, or should be, if any logic whatsoever is being applied to this alteration.
Everything that comprised Chloe Sullivan has been robbed of her, and of us. She's left now to play Jimmy's fiancee, Clark's best friend, Lois' cousin, Davis' obsession, etc. I'm not jumping the gun here. I'm willing to give this a chance. But I'm expressing my feelings now, in hopes that the show can redeem itself if this fails. Chloe deserves better than this. It isn't fair to leave her in the dark, out of the loop, making jokes about Clark's lack of speed and strength again after 4 years of holding such an esteemed position. (It felt like "Apocalypse," when she didn't know who Clark was, but we knew that the REAL Chloe would still be the same.) She's NOT Pete Ross. She doesn't need this. She's been Clark's rock; she's filled the void Martha and Jonathan left behind. She's filled it beautifully, and NO ONE else can do it. Clark can't talk to himself. As the writer of this article stated, Chloe's last word on the subject was that she would trade NOTHING for her knowledge of Clark's secret. Do the producers now care so little about Chloe's own wishes themselves? Hasn't Chloe earned the right to make this decision on her own?
I don't blame Clark for what he did. I can't say that he made the wrong decision. I'm sure the writers will conveniently make up for any role Chloe would have played now, just to justify his decision. But please, producers, for the sake of Chloe Sullivan, don't desert her like this. If this is to make room for Superman, find a different way. I would've preferred our girl to be killed off in a blaze of glory (and that's not exactly a suggestion) than to be drained of all things Chloe.
I don't want to watch those old episodes and resent the way my favorite TV show turned out. I don't want to watch Chloe find out about Clark, protecting his secret faithfully, just to see it torn away. I don't want to hear her say, "I'd die before I'd betray your secret," knowing she was treated as though undeserving of the chance. (Again, not a suggestion.) I don't want to see her in the Fortress, knowing she'd someday lose all knowledge of its existence. I don't want to see an amazing episode like "Bloodline," knowing it was her last chance to share this dynamic with Clark. I don't want this to be the end of Clark and Chloe as we know them, the way they've become over 7 and a half seasons (particularly the last 4). I don't want Chloe to be unaware of the backstory when things come to a head at the end of the season (and series?).
It's true, without Chlark it's not Smallville.

I definitely agree. This was one of the hardest moments in smallville history for me to watch. These two characters have forged this great friendship, and Chloe's been a part of so many things. I was fine with breaking standard Superman mythology here, it was really worth it for this character.
This has always been a more realistic Superman (to me) than other renditions, and here's reality: if this guy had to solely carry his secret, he'd be brooding, more like Batman than the character we know and love. That's a heckuva lot of pain to deal with. With Chloe knowing his secret, it allowed him to be more mellow for the past few seasons.
Now, she's practically a non-character. She's not a journalist anymore, not Brainiac anymore, not anything of importance anymore. What's she going to do, chase his secret down again? It is disrespectful to the character.
And here's the part I don't get. That whole scene, with Clark opining how it's better that Chloe not know his powers. . . it doesn't solve anything. Lois knows nothing and she was dragged to the phantom zone. Jimmy knows nothing, and wasn't he nearly killed awhile back?
It has never had a thing to do with knowledge. If dude wants to protect his "friends," he's best to have none. Because she's so close to Clark, she can still be bad-guy-bait later.
I'm a longtime Smallville fan, so I'm not going to leave the show, but it did hurt. I always loved the semi-banter between Chloe and Clark. And on top of everything, in that last scene, it almost seemed like she suddenly had no feelings for him. Suddenly, she was cast aside like a plastic character.
And we all know that, powers or not, deep deep down, Chloe Sullivan is in love with Clark Kent now and forevermore.

Why would I hate the PS3 for making Smallville better than it ever had been?

Well, I'd have to say without Clark it's not Smallville.:\
Anyway, I haven't enjoyed Smallville this much since, I honestly don't know when.
I've always been one of those people who never wanted anyone, this includes Lionel, Lana, Chloe, etc, to know Clark's secret. I take that back, I don't mind people like Oliver, or any other future Justice League members finding out. So I'm just fine with Chloe not knowing anymore. But, I also realize that there's always the possibility that Chloe will regain her memories of Clark's secret. And if this happens, so be it.
As far as PS3 is concerned, I don't necessarily love them, but I like the direction they've taken so far.
But to be honest, there are a number of episodes left in the season, so I don't know if I'll continue to like the direction they've taken and will be taking. We shall see.

The PS3 are way better then almiles. they've pretty much given clark four years of charachter development in 9 episodes, something that the old PTB either couldn't or wouldn't do. Instead almiles were focused on brining us the visual STD that is Clana.

The PS3 have done a great job this season. Even with the new Chloe development (which I hate), they have better continuity and subplots this season. I don't think there has been a single episode I have thought was aweful, unlike last season. They have done a great job maturing Clark. Like Triplet said in her review for "Bloodline," Clark has stood his ground against Tess grilling him and didn't make up some lame excuse, something he never would have done in the past. Even if he made a bad choice regarding Chloe (I don't think it was his choice to make), he's realizing his responsibilities and stepping up, much as Oliver Queen has been pushing his to do.
The plot twist with Chloe could possibly be brilliant because it was inspired a lot of talk and contraversy. But more than that, it keeps us interested...it mades us want to tune in next week to find out what happens next. Will Chloe get her memory back? Only time will tell...

I think they really thought about this situation. Chloe will now without her memories of Clark trust Davis more. So I think this move was Brilliant! But i believe at the and of this season she will get her mamory back somehow!

I agree with everyone...It did take alot of guts to take that dramatic turn in the dynamics between two of the biggest characters on the show, Clark and Chloe during the first half of the season. It's just another step by the writers to leap Clark forward towards his destiny. Now, only if we could get them to have Clark atleast attempt to take flight.

I like the direction they've taken this season. Like others, I'm going to wait to see more before I declare that they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Despite my avi, I don't hate PS3. On the most part they've done a great job with SV.
However, I do HATE what they've done with Chloe and Chlark. The desecration of the Fever letter was uncalled for and SHOULD have been handled better. Chloe's mind wipe was beautifully done, yet I LOATHED it.
They've already taken away Chloe's journalism, now her memories. IMO, there's not much left of the girl I've known and loved all these years. Reducing her down to Jimmy's bride is the lowest of low. Chloe isn't much more than an empty shell walking around claimining, "I love Jimmy. He's perfect."
Just BLECH!
OTOH, things have been very intriguing for Chloe. I can still see some of the Chloe I've known and loved, but not much. Despite my adamant outburst against all things Chlavis, I am completely sold on that relationship. It's exciting, mysterious, and freaking HOT! I don't know where it's going and I want to stay tuned in to find out.
As far as Clark and Lois are concerned, I already know that story. Been there, done that. As for Jimmy, never liked the guy before SV, now I pretty much can't stand him. Ollie, I like him and am glad the real Ollie is back. Tess is kind of interesting, but not in the epis enough to fully get behind that story. Besides, she makes me miss Lex.
Davis/Doomy has been and is the most interesting story line this year (IMO). Again, I WANT to watch that story unfold.
Anyway . . .

It is Kinda sad that Chloe no longer knows. But really the only thing she lost is the knowledge of a very dangerous secret.
She still Chloe. She still Clark's BFF, she still runs ISIS, She should still have meteor powers, she still loves Jimmy, she still has computer hacking skills, she can still help Clark solve cases like she did when they both worked at the Torch and she didn't know his secret.
And what's the big deal about one less person knowing Clark's secret. By the end of Season 7, only two people, Lois and Jimmy, did not know Clark's secret. It was getting out of hand.
SP3 - I love season 8 so far - Keep up the good work.

I can never hate PS3..in fact this episode just made me love them even MORE. Look at the discussion surrounding the memory loss controversy, look at the excitement building up for next week's episode, this has to be the single most BRILLIANT maneuver I've ever seen in SV. I haven't seen this much hostility/anticipation since JUSTICE. And besides, I don't even think this memory loss concept will stick. I think Chloe WILL regain her memories, and can you imagine the strain that will part on the CHLARK friendship?? And Chloe's anger will not only teach Clark the value of their friendship, but what moral boundaries to cross. I really want Chloe, or Oliver Queen, to walk up to CK and say something like...
"That's something I'd expect from Lex Luthor."
I swear I'd wet my pants. But as far as PS3 goes, the best thing that has happened to SV.....makes me wish Al/Miles left sooner.
