I'm allowing posters to vote for 1 or more favorite episodes if it's too hard to decide!
1) Rogue- Sam Phelan is a rogue cop who learns Clark's secret, but his attempts to blackmail Clark backfire when he is killed in a shootout during a museum heist. Meanwhile, Chloe is fired as editor of the Smallville Torch, and Lex has an old girlfriend reenter his life with a plan to destroy his father.
2) Dichotic- Ian Randall splits himself in two so he can attend twice as many classes and date Lana and Chloe at the same time. Meanwhile, Lex meets Helen Bryce.
3) Asylum- Lex has been suffering for a month in Belle Reve, but when Lionel orders radical electroshock therapy, Clark finally decides to throw caution to the wind and break him out. Unfortunately, Van, Ian and Eric are ready to take him out. Meanwhile, Lana meets Adam Knight during her physical therapy.
4) Bound- Clark helps Lex discover the truth when Lex is accused of killing a one night fling. Meanwhile, Lana sees Genevieve Teague in a dream of Isobel Thoreaux's execution just before she arrives to meet her son's new girlfriend.
5) Lexmas- Lex considers whether to turn an operative loose to obtain or fake damaging information against Jonathan to upset his Senatorial race. But when Lex is shot, he falls into a coma and is visited by the ghost of his mother, who shows him what his life could be like if he frees himself from his father. Meanwhile, Clark helps deliver Christmas presents.
6) Subterranean- Clark discovers that his neighbor, Jed McNally, is holding migrant laborers captive and forcing them to work on his farm. Feeling guilty since he sees himself as the ultimate illegal immigrant, Clark seeks help from Martha to allow a young boy and his mother to stay in the country.
7) Gemini- Clark returns from the fortress and he's acting strange. Clark and Lana team up to bring Lex down. A man named Adrian Cross plants a bomb on Chloe, which he will detonate if Lois doesn't get Lex to admit the truth about Project Gemini. Chloe gets stuck in an elevator with Jimmy, and romance ensues. In the end, Clark is Bizarro!
8) Abyss- Brainiac begins removing Chloe´s memories one by one until the only person she remembers is Davis. Clark realizes the only way to stop Brainiac from taking over Chloe’s mind is to rebuild the Fortress of Solitude and ask Jor-El to heal her.

I've got a strong feeling Abyss is going to wipe the floor with all of these. I did enjoy Dichotic, Asylum and Gemini, Lexmas was good except the Santa Clause subplot was random. But Abyss sounds so much better than all of them. Hopefully it can live up to expectations.
Though it's quite strange how Ian appeared in 2-9 and then exactly a season after in 3-9.

Rouge Asylum and Gemini were all pretty good episodes. I don't think that they will be to hard to beat though. I'm going to save my vote till after the episode but from what I've seen it looks like Abyss will get it.

Not much competition this week. Only Rogue, Asylum, and Gemini could challenge for best ep. But I'm not voting until Abyss is over.

I'm surprised Lexmas is a favorite. I always avoid that episode when I watch S5 and there are very few I don't watch. I have a feeling Abyss is going to be very good and at the top of my list for 9th episodes. It won't be long till I find out.

The plot for this episode isn't really pulling me to watch, but I'm sure that PS3 will throw in a few surprises that'll make me like it. But I'll probably end up voting for Gemini or Asylum.

Asylum and Lexmas for me. Abyss was a bit too slow. The end was really great but more of a visage of things to come.

Actually, ninth episodes tend to be pretty good. I would give most of the above a three out of five, with the exception of "Subterranean" which I hated for its lame immigration plot and cheap-budget special effects (come on, Clark has a giant fight underground so they don't have to show anything?)
I think some other episode numbers (fifth, for example) have had a greater proportion of lameness.
Maybe it's because they're getting to the halfway mark of the season and want to get to a big half-way point for the holidays!

Gemini wins for me this week. Even though there wasn't a lot of Clark then, it was done very nicely and the plot actually seemed to move instead of stalling for the first twenty minutes. *coughAbysscough*

As much as I love "Lexmas" (as in it's in my Top 5 fave episodes of the series), "Abyss" really, really made me SUPER pumped about Smallville again, so yeah, my vote is for "Abyss".

Wow! Im surprised Rogue isn't receiving more votes. It's one of SV finest episodes EVER!
Totally agree. So much to remember: Corrupt rogue cop. Possibility of Clark's secret exposed. Jonathan Kent framed for murder. Clark forced to use his powers for evil (of course, he's good in the end). Lex's sly machinations. Chloe fired as editor (not of the same weight, but still important to her at that point in the series - after all, she was only a freshman.)
Lex getting a whiff of Clark's secret. Phelan being the former "fixer" for Lionel, and having to clean up a lot of Lex's messes in the past. Concern for Lex finding out what Phelan has found out about Clark. Lex's babe being particularly babe-a-licious.
Foreshadowing: The Metropolis Police Department badge is shaped like the "S" shield that we'll come to know and love. The bejeweled cuirass on display in the museum that, strangely enough, has a vague "S" shape on its breastplate. "I can't see going into battle wearing something like that." (Clark says that, tee-hee.)
"Isn't it alarmed?"
"Kid, they only alarm things that they think people can break into."
(Phelan, directing Clark to use some super-strength to fix the surveillance cameras or something, before breaking into the art museum.)
Clark almost killing Phelan, and deciding not to. Jonathan's relief at learning Clark didn't harm Phelan: "Once you cross that line, you can't ever go back."
Taut, exciting action scenes. Clark stops a runaway bus to save a homeless bum sleeping on a park bench. Great bus destruction (one of the first of the many vehicles crushed, blown up, set on fire, hit immovable object, etc.! Just call it the Smallville Demolition Derby.) Of course, Phelan witnesses that and that's what sets off the whole episode.
Use of the powers - super-speed (runs home from Metropolis), x-ray vision (looks outside the museum to see the bomb squad there), super-strength (throws the loot from the museum heist right out to the police at the curb), invulnerability (gets an engine dropped on him).
I still remember a lot of the details and it's been seven years.
And, of course, this is the episode where Clark finds out that he is faster than a speeding bullet!

11-13-2008, 10:28 PM
After more thought, I'd rank them approximately:
1) "Lexmas" - the poignant vision for Lex of what could be. The deliberate choice that he makes to turn away from good.
2) "Abyss" - Clark has to make a decision about Chloe's memories and his secret. Will he give up his best friend to keep her safe? This may be ranked too high. We won't know more about the Brainiac storyline until the season closes. Tough to evaluate this one without all the info.
3) "Asylum" - Lex knows Clark's secret but is keeping it quiet while he's locked in the sanitarium. Clark once again has to make a decision - save Lex at the expense of letting Lex know his secret, or let Lex's brain be fried? Of course, Clark chooses to save Lex, and it's not Clark's fault that previous meteor freak enemies prevent Clark from carrying out his mission of mercy. (Good for keeping the secret, though).
4) "Rogue" - Clark makes a decision not to use his powers to kill a man who knows his secret and who has framed his father for murder. Also, Clark finds out that he is faster than a speeding bullet! (first time seen in the show)
5) "Bound" - Clark has to make a decision again. Will he allow Lionel to help him and Lex, despite Lex thinking that Lionel has set Lex up for the murder? Will Lex believe Clark, that Clark is only talking to Lionel to help Lex? The stakes are high. Plus, there's the Chlark kiss in the elevator!
6) "Gemini" - interesting more from Lex's point of view than Clark's. More of a character study in that we find out how depaved and obsessed Lex is becoming. Who else would make multiple clones of his dead younger brother, fit them with false memories, and summarily execute the clones who age too fast or who aren't perfect? But not a lot of decision-making in this episode other than Chloe choosing to "out" herself as a meteor freak to Jimmy. The Bizarro twist ending was good, though.
7) "Dichotic" - lame FOTW. Clark has to use his abilities to save Lana and Chloe, ho-hum. No decision to make there. Obviously he'll help them. There's no downside to making that decision.
8) "Subterranean" - incredibly lame. Wishy-washy plot, a FOTW who's a giant mole-man, and "action scenes" that take place underground! And raising the creepiness factor, it's mass murder. Loads of bodies discovered buried on the farm. A real turn-off.
********************
What I like to see is drama. A character has to make a decision. There are pros and cons on either side. What makes them decide the way they do? What will be the consequences of them making the decision they make? The consequences, not only for the character who makes the decision, but for his or her friends and family? What other options have they ruled out by making the decision that they did?
That's why the first five episodes on the list are memorable to me. People have to make tough decisions in them. And they pay a price for making those decisions. That's why "Lexmas" was so poignant - there was a deliberate emphasis on "what might have been". And in the end, Lex chooses the cold sterility of power over happiness and love. A fine look into the character of the man who will become Superman's greatest foe.

In line with a great S8 being provided by PS3, I'd go with Abyss being the best 9th epi so far.
Although I did like Gemini (one of the better epis of S7).

Gemini wasn't a special episode...until the last 30 seconds. All around i say the best episode was Asylum. It was a sort of sequel to the awesome Shattered and was just as good.It was an emotional rollercoaster and the final scene between Clark and Lex was brilliant.Lex was finally at peace but Clark looked like he was carrying all the guilt of the world on his shoulders.

It's kind of hard to decide. I did enjoy Asylum and Lexmas but Gemini and Abyss were awesome only because things happened that you didn't see coming
Gemini - Bizzaro coming back, who saw that coming? well not me
Abyss - Chloe getting her mind wipped of Clark's power.
It's a hard choice but I would have to go with Gemini.

I hate to be one of those people who votes for the newest episode but in this case I think it's justified. Abyss was the best of this list, IMO> Tied to continuity, filled with both romance and intrigue and a furthering of the mythos it had a good blend of everything.

ok...here's how i broke it down:
abyss and gemini were a tie. end of story. they were both awesome!! asylum was a close second. lexmas was next, followed by rogue, then bound, then dichotic, and subterranean at the end. subterranean was just bad, in my opinion.
i was so mad in abyss when clark made chloe forget about his abilities. that made me SO MAD!!!! but, w/e, clark. chloe's no dummy.

Rogue was one of my favourite episodes for a long time. it really showed Clark developing his morals... he thought bad things, told his dad about it, but didnt act on them. he participated in stealing but eventually got the better of his blackmailer. plus it got serious points for that end scene with Lex watching the blur on the screen
However, Asylum has to get top marks. It was absolutely riveting, and the darkest of the Luthor moments by far. My mother actually made me turn it off when it got to the electro shock
i'd put Lexmas third as i thought it showed exactly why Lex wants to be who he will eventually become. Power.

I had to vote for "Abyss" just because it was SO Chloe-centric, and I'm a HUGE Chloe fan. Hooray for Chloe! And I can safely vote for it now, since I know she gets her memory back in just two episodes. :-D
"Rogue" was really good, too. It was the first time anyone had uncovered Clark's secret, and to have a dirty cop using Clark for personal gain was a really interesting touch.
"Asylum" and "Gemini" also had great elements to them. I liked the FOTW reunion we saw in "Asylum," and the return of Lex from Belle Reeve (a very changed, though memory-wiped, man). The twist at the end of "Gemini" blew me away.
"Lexmas" was one of the best episodes of the series, too. It was really awesome the way they gave Lex an "It's a Wonderful Life" kind of moment, and then showed us how that inevitably pushed him down the dark path he was headed towards instead. The alternate universe they showed us was cool, too, and could certainly make some great fanfics.
The other three were pretty awful, but it's great that there have been so many stellar ninth episodes!

Lexmas
Asylum
Abyss
Rogue
the rest aren't really that great or good
1. Abyss (My favorite of S8 and one of my favorites of the entire series)
2. Rogue (Possibly the best episode of S1 and stands strong against other seasons as well)
3. Asylum (Lex had such a great arc for the first half of S3)
4. Gemini (Like it more every time I watch it)
5. Lexmas (Sooooo ridiculous, still can't stand the name, but there were a few good parts, like Clark and Santa)
6. Bound (Eh. Barely remember it)
7. Dichotic and Subterranean (No to both of them. Just... no)
