View Full Version : Green Arrow -- Smallville's T-Pain?

Despite the fact that I'm not so thrilled that GA is so integral to so much of the "Smallville" eps. this year, my biggest problem is with how the writers have chosen to stick with Green Arrow's minimalist costume by using just shades and a hood and that silly T-Pain voice as his disguise; unless Tess Mercer is totally clueless (which she clearly has demonstrated otherwise thus far), there's pretty much NO WAY she couldn't guess that Ollie is Green Arrow by now -- especially after last night's encounter. After all, only his face is in shadow, and even though his voice is T-Pained, he still managed to engage in the same snarky banter with "Mercy" that Ollie has out of costume. This may be more Justin Hartley's fault as an actor, but I think also that his dialogue for Green Arrow is indistinguishable from that of Oliver Queen's. Even if they had to go to the cliched "Tacit Man of Few Words" that plagues Batman, Superman, and nearly every other -man that is a superhero that we've seen on TV or in the movies, at least there would be some plausibility for having an alter ego. This follows the same silly phenomenon that has Clark Kent saving people on the show in plain sight in that attention-grabbing red and blue ensemble he rocks week after week, that Jimmy called him out on last episode, or why no one ever recognizes Clark Kent in the comics just because he wears a pair of thick glasses. In 2008, Souders and Peterson have to do better as keepers of the flame -- comic-book-themed show or not. :(
At this point it's suspension of disbelief. All the times Lana got KOed were pretty unrealistic.

When I am out walking around at a mall or something sometimes I see a person in the corner of my eye that draws my attention. I have seen random people walking around that look exactly like or very similar to celebrities but there is something in the back of my mind that tells me, nah, can't be why would they be there. Take Clark Kent. Hey looks like superman, but, nah, can't be. Take Bruce Springsteen for example, he is world famous and rich, yet for some reason back in the day when my mother was working at her parent's liquor store she saw this guy get out of a beat up old ass pickup truck. She asked the guy for his ID and turns out he was Bruce Springsteen, but because he drove a beat up pick up truck she didn't put two and two together, that is human nature. Because Clark is some average farmboy from Smallville he can't possibly be Superman, just as that guy couldn't possibly be Bruce Springsteen because he drives a beat up old pickup truck when he is swimming in money.

i hate when people whine about this kind of stuff. it's a super hero story. That alone should cause a little suspension of belief. Don't get wrapped up in the small things.

I agree with you, Kal-alien, people tend to forget this is science fiction. In the comics, Lois worked for about 50 years with Clark without realizing his other identity. It reminds me of that comment made by Roland Emmerich, the director of 'Independence Day', when someone sent him a 3 pages letter pointing out inconsistencies and mistakes on the military uniforms and procedures. His words were 'THIS IS AN ALIEN MOVIE, DON'T TAKE IT TOO SERIOUSLY!"
I guess, in Smallville nothing can be taken too seriously, we just have to play along. Oliver should have ended in a hospital with a broken sternum (and probably a heart attack) after the push he received from Chloe, but he was only unconscious for a couple of minutes (I guess). By the way, neither Clark nor Kara (or Chloe) realized that he was still lying there while they talked.

well IMO it felt like bad writing. why would he be making any comment on Mercy's cuddly self? how on earth would anyone she had never met before be saying things like that too her. and i'm sorry but they slept together... so picking her up in his arms and looking down at her so she can see his lips and the line of his jaw is just idiocy for a superhero...
it's not small things when it makes both Ollie and Tess look like complete idiots

I have to agree with this, and it's definitely not the first time the writing was not well thought out in regard to how it would play out on screen and make the characters look like idiots.

All of the above: it's SV, suspension of disbelief, the kind of rushed writing whenever loose ends are tied up ie wrapping up Kara's story on SV in one ep .
Suspension of disbelief is my fave. Tess being clueless about the GA / Queen similarities can be filed under:
-Lana surely must have noticed the coincidences between Clark's nick-of-time heroics and the wacky goings-on in town? - subfolder: "It's not like him, he's on something"
-Lex should have long suspected Clark's dishonest excuses and his links to, yes, the wacky goings-on in town? - subfolder: "You're my friend and I trust you"
-Any number of lame-brained alibis, excuses and blatant "WTF!" moments over the course of seven seasons. Amnesia, short-term memory loss blackout, and secrets/lies to protect people fall into this quite *heavy* folder ;)
Yeah, the funniest thing is in the episode with the mind control pendant, Lex knows Clark is controlled with it, so when Clark has him against the wall he says "The hyptonistm must be giving you this extra strength".
