I think i know why Clarkie boy cant get of the ground.
No its not because there is snow on the runway.
Oliver give us a hint to why he cant fly. Hes missing his cape.
A quote from Oliver
"sure helped with the aerodynamics, you should give it a try"
Is this the secret to getting him off the ground, or am I pushing it a bit??:)

yes your pushing it abit LOL
i say he can't fly yet because he hasn't embraced his full kryptonian destiny. Ms Crosby said so in season 4 01, crusade when she found out clark was flying, she said he must of fully embraced his kryptonian destiny. Maybe once he fully accepts his kryptonian destiny he'll learn to fly.

----- Added 1 Minutes later -----

if flying is more of a psychological ability for clark, then maybe teh cape would make him feel like an alter ego (superman, boyscout, ect), making him believe he can fly, even though he already knows this. The cape was probably used for reference as in supes flying around, we think of his red cape waving behind him, it was probably more of a touch of using superman mythos, i thought the cape was too bright, could've been darker.

Maybe we are not meant to take 'not in this lifetime' too literally.
Maybe that was the writers idea of getting across not in the '''smallville''' lifetime, as weve been told before.;)

Well ill agree with you that Oliver gave us a hint as to why Clark cannot fly. BUT I believe the line that best describes it was "You have to be in the right state of mind to fly" Clark has everything he needs physically to fly its just the psychological aspect that he lacks

There are several reasons:
1. Embracing the Kryptonian destiny
2. He is afraid of heights
3. Motivating factor - he needs one.
I think if he has #3, he will fly. I think he will fly to save someone, not sure which someone and it doesn't really matter.
He has been shown to "float" when dreaming of Lana, if that means anything.
I had thought that Oliver KNEW that Clark would eventually wear the cape. I thought that because of the look on his face when Clark walked away.
As for Clark saying "not in this lifetime" was meant as ironic, and probably meant as "not in my Smallville life." Like a lot of things on this show (Lois saying she doesn't want to date heroes and then dating two of them and eventually three, Lois saying she didn't want to be a reporter, Clark saying he would never fly, Clark saying he never wanted to wear a costume, etc). These are to show the progression of the mentality of the characters, them growing up. No one ends up being exactly what they want to be and doing exactly what they want to do.

It's pretty much been established that it's a psychological issue - probably linked his phobia of heights.

Ollie, as a human, would require some help with the aerodynamics. Clark won't need the aid of a cape to help him fly. I think once Clark learns to let go of his fears, he will fly pretty easily.

He could fly without his cape, if he actually tried.

Coz he didn't say the magic words so he couldn't fly, coz when u are about to take off, u have to say UP UP AND AWAY, if u dun, u can't take off then. SO UP UP AND AWAY!!

I think the explanation was cut from the script from the scene when he was taking lessons with Kara. Something to do with a "mental block".
I'm not a bit surprised.

I think Clark is over his fear of heights. An episode or two ago he leapt a tall building in a single bound... and that was probably about 20 stories or more up.

The cape has NOTHING to do with Clark flying. It is all a psychological barrier he has to overcome in order to fly. He is getting closer and closer, so perhaps Clark flying is something we will not wait much longer to see...
When Clark said "not in this lifetime" he was talking about the cape not the flying. I have to agree that his not being able to fly is a psychological problem. Despite all the forward progress this season, he has yet to let go of his human expectations of himself or for himself and truly embrace the fact that he is a Kryptonian and not human. Until something more important overrides this mental block he will remain flightless.
Clark flew to save Lana in the tornado.

TPTB have hinted at Comic Con that only the "no tights" rule seems to be in place.

I think that Clark can't really fly either because he hasn't fully completed his destiny or because he hasn't achieved his power yet. He'll probably get his flying ability on accident like what happend with his heat vision in season one. Or like in the episode "Sneeze" when he learned about his super breath, he'll discover he's had the power to fly the entire time except he had no idea about it.
^That would make sense except for the fact that he knows he has that ability. He did it in S4 when he was "Kal-El" and he's seen a bunch of Kryptonians do it, so I'm pretty sure he knows he can do it. I know he's a BDA but eventually that kind of information is going to stick.

If Krypton didn't explode, Clark would have been a remedial student.
He's not the brightest bulb in the pack.
A good analogy would be someone from the present day getting thrown back in time to be raised by apes. He probably wouldn't be able to grasp basics like speech and writing, just like Clark can't get a grip on flying. He was raised by people who can't fly, it's gonna take a while for him to figure it out.

Yet Zod did it while inhabiting Lex, and Bizzaro?

Thats because zod knew how to fly from when he lived on krypton.

Bizzarro was a Kryptonian experiment who used Clark's DNA to re-create himself. If you have someone possess a monkey, that monkey will be able to read and write, although likely a bit sloppily at first, unless the posession includes re-wiring neural pathways.

Clark flew to stop the Nuclear rocket. He just didnt know it. He THINKS he's Jumping when he makes those leaps. Giv eit time. The thought of "breaking the laws of gravity" is impressive to someone who's been told "it can't be done.

er. no he didn't. they have powers on earth because of molecular density and the sun. they're normal on krypton.

He is not afraid of heights when they were kids he and pete had that tree house and clark would get "scared & dizzy" but that was due to the scattered kryptonite in the forrest floor. He should be over that by now i mean he did jump serveral hundred feet on more than one occasion now. He conquered that one when he jumped the building for his dad.

kara flew instantly, Zod instantly, the two from arrival..i mean come on now its just getting old Him flying is just tooo close to the end of the shows need. They don't know how long it will last and are not in any hurry to rush it. The final show will have him fly away and that is it!
er. no he didn't. they have powers on earth because of molecular density and the sun. they're normal on krypton.

Clark just needs to follow the advice of author Douglas Adams.....he just needs to throw himself at the ground and miss.

i don''t think he can't fly because he's afraid ofheights, because he will not be if he learn to fly. I think it's just mental...
All about Clark
11-04-2008, 03:46 PM
Actually, what Oliver said that is the big hint here, is "that one has to get in the right frame of mind to fly the friendly skies", that was what we were supposed to get. The cape was another issue. Clark thought the cape was ridiculous, not that it would help or hinder. I think Clark uses the cape (someday) as a way of having people not paying attention to his face because he doesn't want to wear a mask.
Clark will fly when he's in the right frame of mind.

The answer to why Clark can't fly?
TPTB and PS3.
Sometimes I just get so frustrated until I remember it's just a TV show, but honestly I feel like we're getting patronized with the responses we get.
Gough: Clark won't be flying next season, but Supergirl will be *grin*
Millar: *obligatory minion-like giggle*
Gough: Clark will be getting some flying lessons *wink* but they're more like falling lessons *hearty laugh*
Millar: *giggle giggle*
Gough: Kryptonian girls develop faster than Kryptonian boys *grins at irony*
Millar: *nods and grins in agreement*
-----
NOW we have a similar kind of thing with PS3 when it comes to flying.
Peterson: Well....We can guarantee NO Tights *wink* *wink*
Swimmer: *grins*
Slavkin: Stay tuned *giggle-a-thon*
Souders: Clark will find it hard to run around Metropolis. He's not in Smallville anymore. *hopes people read into her cryptic words*
-----------------
Personally, I'm sick of it. :p It's like all those grins and winks and AlMiles laughing just seeps right through the pages. Interviewers even make it a point of adding in all of Gough's laughs. Wow, so clever all of you. At this point, I don't even care if I'm spoiled. I just want to know when he's going to fly...
...And not through some episode description a la "KARA TEACHES CLARK HOW TO FLY", which should have read, "ALMILES TEACHES CW EPISODE DESCRIPTION WRITERS HOW TO LIE".
Fly Clark!! Flyyyyy!

They had portals to Earth. Zod would have visited before.
Here's an idea. If the writers haven't referenced that as a fact, in any show, then it didn't happen.

Personally, I was irritated when Clark said 'not in this lifetime'. Seriously if Smallville doesn't at least end with Clark wearing the Superman outfit, i'd feel like i've wasted 8 years of my life following the series...
Plus would've been nice if Clark had thrown in some reference to what he desires as a costume... I thought a reference to the Zorro type mask Oliver chose to wear would've been nice (i.e. Clark saying 'not my style' or something like that.)
But it was a good episode, but i just hope that at the end of the series, be it this season or next, we see Superman with all the bells and whistles.
Here's an idea. If the writers haven't referenced that as a fact, in any show, then it didn't happen.
Here's an idea. If something hasn't been explicitly stated to have not happened, and it explains something, it did happen.
