View Full Version : Leaping tall buildings or flight?

I just watched it and there is a scene where he jumps really high, but not flight. Of course there will be speculation on that but here's my two cents.
I was reading a superman comic this morning. (hey I had some free time before work, get off my back) Anyway...I began thinking about flight. Everyone talks about how he has to fly. I submit that he will never fly until he gets rid of all his hang ups.
Flight is not a physical thing for Superman/Clark. It is all mental. He flys by force of will not because his body is ready for it. So far he has relied on his physical tools to get him where he is. He could push the earth off its axis by his sheer will alone but he never will until he gets his head straight.
He needs to go off somewhere and get rid of all his friends. He cannot worry about them or think about how much he needs them. He needs to concentrate on his destiny. Now if he had stayed with Jor-el he would be flying like a MO-FO by now but he didn't cause he cares too, too much. Every incarnation of Superman had some time away from those he loved so he could focus. Our SV Clark doesn't seem to be getting there anytime soon so hence.....no flight.
Also when Clark becomes a little smarter and can start figuring things out on his own (super intelligence or something) then he will never have the will power to do anything like flying.
My two cents...

Yea its super jump, but many tonight will be saying oh look clark's flew..... Though we have a very good chance at flying this year since PS3 have stated in many interviews that flying is going to happen, though my guess it will be during second half of the season so they would only need to have clark do it 1-3 times during the remaining season episodes to keep flying budget down.

It's clearly a superjump, and not flying, although I'm sure there will be debates about it.
I think the good thing about Clark is his love for his friends. What would be the point of having the power to do anything if he didn't care so deeply for people? That's what makes Clark Kent Superman. YMMV.

They cut out something from the Directors Cut. When he arrived at the building a girl was supposed to be falling and he would catch her. They cut it though. Which is good because it looked cheesy.

No, it was a jump. Flying would have been up and over. :D

Some say "You have to crawl before you walk."
Being as the first Superman leaped before he learned to fly, I find it fitting every time Clark super jumps buildings and such.

They also cut out that guy he just randomly helps up when he gets to the top.

EXCELLENT JUMP. That's funny about the cheesy human catch in the air being cut.
I kind of like super-jumps more than flight. It's different. It's like a huge Super-hop. I'd like to see more superheros super-hopping.

I loved the jump and he was looking up, I thought to myself, could it be?? will they let him fly up instead of superspeeding up the stairs?? Well, the jump was really cool and I wasnt even expecting that. Hope it continues and he starts floating or something like he did over his bed in season 1.

Its still controlled leaping, but the confidence and control he's showing in the execution definitely hints that Clark is not far from flight.

Yes. The energy he expended leaping to catch the nuclear warhead in "HIDDEN" was obviously far more strenuous than tonight's jump from a character standpoint. Yet another milepost for how far he's come since high school.

The super-jump shot reminded me of a similar moment from the Fleischer cartoons' opening; you can see it at the 1:50 mark in this clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYMynm63A-k).

Yes it was a pretty sweet looking superjump. I do hate some times people think he is flying, once they do and i hope PS3 isnt pulling out legs like al/miles did about saying flying will happen. They would make flying a very important part of episode like all past powers episodes.

that was definitely a jump. Though i liked the "moment of concentration" on his face right before he jumped up. I really like how clark is coming into his own now. Still a little rough around the edges but the hero is emerging. I really am starting to believe he can be superman one day.

Dude defied gravity. Period. The difference between jumping leaping bounding and flying is simply the level of gravity defiance. No matter what you call it, it was COOL! :D

The leap was thrilling but doesn't come close to the flight in Crusade. No way.

I've watched a few leaps by Clark. Some are difficult to distinguish, but some like tonight's episode I've been thinking...
I think we wouldn't have the discrepancy here amongst us all if the show presented its special effects properly.
It has to follow physics of the earth...sure we would see a blur initially in his jump as his powerful legs project him off the ground at superspeed. But during his short descent we still see a continuous blur that indicates some superspeed right until the end of his jump. Unless, he can control the acceleration of his descent (which is an ability to fly) so then we should see no blur (superspeed). He would reach the top of his flight and descend as fast as any object that falls on earth (9.8 m/s^2). Essentially, it should not have any special effects and show him falling like any other- only he would be able to withstand the landing to be upright.
As far other leaps, most notably ones with a "flatter angle", the confusion comes about because they make it seem like he's floating- which he shouldn't be. Young Clark's leaping in the field of Superman Returns was great! I think they should stick with something more matrix-like!
*Actually the best looking jump I've seen so far is the one where CK jumps up the DP to save Chloe and Jimmy from the detonating bomb in the elevator back in season 7

It was s super jump - but I AM glad they cut the part before it that was in the DC. That scene was lame, him catching a falling girl & setting her on her feet, then she just says "thanks" and walks away. SO glad that got cut.

Well about the original point about flight being mental; yep that has been fairly well established. Others who have possessed his body flew just fine. Clark doesn't need to be more time in a yellow sun, or to be even OLDER to fly. He just needs about 15 minutes on a psychiatrists couch.
At this point, however, not flying has gone from a GREAT idea (seven/eight years ago) to an outright SILLY idea. I'd have to do a bit of research but, as it has originally been stated, when Superman 1st debuted in comics he could not fly. I think it took LESS than 8 years until he was, however, outright flying. He is so far into the "Superman" mythos in so many other ways it is TIME for him to at least fly.
Like I said; Season one "no flights no tights" great idea; season EIGHT "STILL no flying.." just getting silly.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but that superjump in PREY was nothing compared to the jump in HIDDEN when he disables the missile.

10-24-2008, 09:50 PM
I voted flight but I think it was more like half and half.
He went straight up, didn't even bend his knees. Again he went straight from a standing position, then soared over the building and came down for a landing.
So I say it was part leap, part flying.

As soon as I saw that scene I knew there would be debate over it here on Ksite.
I have to admit that I thought it looked like a jump. But as Kara once said, he really needs to start working on the flight thing...!

IT WAS A JUMP!!! one thing i do agree on is that clark's got to be mentally ready for it unlike he's other powers that he got over time due to maturing. but i remember kara made a joke on time to clark asking him he can't fly and she said something in the regards of " wow, i guess humans are riht girls mature faster then boys".
the one thing i always thought was that superman originally did not fly ether. after time and time in comicbooks instead of making him "jump around like a flea" they eventually made him fly.

When the Fleisher Brothers began making Superman cartoons in the 40's, Superman was supposed to be able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound." However, Dave Fleisher wanted to make Sperman's movements look more fluid, so he showed Superman manouvering in the air, even when he was supposed to be in mid-leap. That change eventually developed into flying.

^Thanks for that info David. Very interesting.
I enjoy Clark's leaping. As much as I wish he could fly leaping is better than nothing. I get a kick out of the fact that Superman originally leapt.

When we see him fly he will change direction mid air. There will be no question of if that was flight or super jump.

I think that if Clark isn't flying right now is because he doesn't want to. he broke the laws of gravity several times in the series (sometimes consciously, sometimes not) and the only thing that keeps him from launching is that he's not even trying.

He can't fly!
Shadowlord367

I think that with the exception of "Crusade," every single time Clark has defied gravity, he has just leapt. I think "flight" is a term reserved for when he travels in a horizontal direction in midair. When he just goes up vertically, it is merely a leap.
Still exciting though. :D
