I didn't think heat vision was visible to the characters on the show...I mean the red lazer beam effect they use..I don't think the characters can see that, just the audience...At least that's what I thought

Lois wasn't looking down from what I saw. So, do you think if she did see his powers, then they should explain it soon?

Wasn't there an epi where someone did see Clark laser something? Maybe I'm dreaming, but it sort of rings a bell. I was thinking that she just wasn't looking at the time.

Honestly I don't know why she would turn away though I mean Clark literally, head butted a guy! I would have been like...'Dayum Smallville' LOL. Maybe she was just too emotionally drained by that point or something..I dunno...

Well, they can obviously see the objects Clark sets on fire/melds/ and what not...But I'm not sure if they can see the red squiggles or not...Cuz Clark has used his heat vision before in public...Like 'Devoted' when he broke the heater pipe...I think the group of cheerleaders and football players watching him, would've noticed, right?
And with Alicia when he burned the security tape she asked him how he did that..And he had to tell her with his heat vision..She didn't see it.

After watching that scene again, it looked like Clark hit the heat vision during superspeed mode. If this is the case, then Lois wouldn't have seen it.

Heat vision is *invisible* to the human eye. It's heat. If anything, they might be able to see a small transparent distortion.

i dont know how to quote. But anyway You know when you see heat gas in a film an it's almost smokey and you can see through it but parts are blurry. whose to say the human eye couldnt see that as i would think thats what heat vision could look like.

plus us as the viewers hear the whoosh and see clark go speeding out but in promise (S6) clark just dissappeared from lana's vision and she saw chloe's hair move in the wind. She saw none of the effects just what was happening overall (him ripping the door off placing it back up there...the lock turning red from heat him poofing away) also i just recently watched promise and the dialouge is different the first time from the second. when we are with chloe third person view they talk and stuff is said about lana and clark but then when they talk again (same time but from lana's POV) their dialogue is different. My friend said that sounds about right "Lana hearing what she wants!" Lol he hates lana:p Anyways anything she did see would fall under the radar now that she was free. Being tied up and electrocuted takes alot out of ya and she needed to get some sleep...or some coffee..."where is that damned copy boy when you need him?":D:p

I remember those episodes, too. And also, he used two very quick bursts. If Lois had seen anything at all, she probably wouldn't have known what it was or where it actually came from. I think we, the audience, are the only ones actually privy to this superpower, same as with super speed. We see him super speed in slow-mo (isn't that silly?) but no one else does.

Well, first you'd have to consider what heat vision really is (or is really supposed to be in Superman's world). How does it work? In the Science of Superman, for Clark to actually have heat vision, it would likely involve the concentration and focusing of infrared radiation that is already entering Clark's eyes. The author states that the same retianl cells that allow him to see infrared light may also be able to draw on Superman's great energy stores to intensify and reflect infrared rays on command from the brain, focusing them on the lens of teh yee, which would then project them outward.
Since we mere mortals can't typically see infrared radiation, I think the "red heat distortion" we see on TV is only for our benefit so we all know he is now using heat vision. I think it is similar to the blurring of colors when he superspeeds. In reality, he would just disappear in thin air (as Lana saw in Promise from Season 6); the color blurring is just a special effect for our benefit so we know what is happening.

Yeah, I think the heat is not visible, but the red streaks are for us viewers. He did use his heat vision in front of Chloe and Lois in Devoted when he steamed the jocks in the locker room. Lois and Clark were standing right next to each each other and Lois did not see the heat.

CK is supposed to be quicker than a speeding bullet isn't he?She didn't see anything. While he rescued her,Lois seem pretty traumatised after what happenned anyway. So if she saw something, she probably thought she was crazy.

If you remember the episode "visitor", did he not use his heat vision infront of all of those jocks at the end. Also the visitor(dont remember his name) knew clark used it, maybe he figured it out by himself or maybe there was a visual effect.
Clark could also use his heat vision in "Clark time" which would casue him to do it so fast, Lois could not have saw it.

Yes Clark's heat vision can be seen. Clark is shooting fire out of his eyes, but as someone stated earlier he did this at superspeed in front of Lois. So no Lois didn't see it, but if he were to do this at normal speed it would be seen. Also remember it all depends on how intense the fire from his eyes are. I would assume the hotter the heat vision the more visible it would be.

In Talisman, Jeremiah gained super powers similar to Clarks. From what I can remember, his heat vision was like Superman's in the comics, a red beam. I've always thought that was interesting.
But yes, it did appear Clark used his heat vision during superspeed. I love it when he uses more than one power at once. If he had used his X-Ray vision to look inside the jewelry store before entering (or even better, to look through the assailants mask to see his identity and confirm his speculation that the jeweler was the assailant) then he would have used SIX of his super powers in one scene :)
Also, Smallville's version of heat vision is, by far, the best Superman heat vision portrayed in any movie or television show about Superman/Clark, IMO.

Humans cannot see heat vision.
Smallvillian fact.
Clark used it, in NORMAL speed, in Devoted. Season 4. Right in front of Lois, Chloe, Mandy (cheerleader) and half the football team.
Noone caught on. Pipe just burst.
Point made. Noone can see it. Not even Chloe. Who figures everything out.
So yes, he did use his heat vision in front of her.

It could be that he would have to focus it a lot more in order to get the beam that we see in the comics. The level of power that results from that beam we normally see in the comics is a LOT higher then we see in Smallville. I recall in the latest Superman Returns film the heat vision was similar to what was done in Smallville as well. However it the amount of power to separate the shuttle from the plane didn't need to be high. So again there could be different versions and Clark simply isn't powerful enough to create the beam version of the heat vision that we are all familiar with.
Still didn't he create a small beam at one point when he had to operate on Chloe last season? He had to really focus and didn't seem easy.

I doubt she saw it. I agree that its just special effects for the viewer. This was such a great scene though! But we will prolly get questions later on.

You're right. In "Action"--I think last season--one of the guys working on the Warrior Angel movie saw him use his heat vision. I think Lois just wasn't looking.
