October 17, 2008 - I'll admit that the idea of having a crazed jeweler hunt down newly engaged couples and test their relationship compatibility is intriguing. It's like a dating website with the volume turned way up and taken TO THE EXTREME! Probably something the WWE will eventually come up with and market as a new brand of dating. Besides this unusual premise, "Committed" delivers nothing new, exciting or interesting to the table. There is never any real sense of danger for Chloe and Jimmy or Clark and Lois. Kryptonite conveniently makes an appearance at the most opportune time, giving Clark an opportunity to participate in the jewelers' test of love.
At the rate the Lois and Clark sexual tension is escalating, I'm fairly certain they will be married by the end of this season. Lois' forced declaration that she does love Clark was brushed off after she claimed to have removed the sensor from her finger, but, I think we all know that it was intended to be taken as truth. I touched on the fact that this is too much, too soon last week and we have more of the same here.
There is a lot of fun to be had with limited Lois and Clark sexual tension as they partake in their weekly investigation. Instead, it appears as if the series' producers are intent on beating what we already know into our collective skulls. Yes, I know Lois and Clark will eventually fall in love, stop with the nudging and the winking already! These attempts to remind us aren't clever or cute, they are overt and jarring us from the story you are trying to tell. Admittedly, it wouldn't take much to divert someone's attention from the story they are trying to tell this week.
The Jimmy and Chloe relationship is put on trial by the crazed jeweler who is obsessed with ensuring that newly engaged couples are truly meant to be together. While we've witnessed plenty to make us doubt Chloe and Jimmy's likelihood of having a successful marriage, they still seem to be blinded by their deep devotion to one another.
Their trial by jeweler went better than I expected, but that has a lot to do with Chloe's genuine commitment to Jimmy. The events that happened after he let them go are what really bothered me. Soon after they are freed, Chloe gets this silly grin on her face like they've passed some sort of officially sanctioned relationship trial. They just got electrocuted by a nut job – there really shouldn't be any smiling right after that. There is no time for a cute heart-to-heart moment when Chloe realizes they are meant to be together. What happened to the Chloe who would immediately get up and start tracking down whoever did this? Oh wait; Lois fills that role now.
It gets worse; Jimmy openly admits to Chloe that he lied about his parents' professions because he didn't want her to know that his father was a drunk and that he didn't really know his mother. Chloe is reasonably bothered by this revelation but surprisingly quick to forgive him for this. I would really like to know what happened to the Chloe from two to three years ago; she wouldn't stand for Jimmy's continuous deceit and distrust.
Finally, the Oliver and Tess storyline appears to be going nowhere. It was revealed a couple of weeks ago that the two have a history together and this week we learn that Oliver cheated on Tess with a waitress. Things heat up between the two and they spend a night together. Their story so far feels like it was ripped from a third rate soap opera and it doesn't appear to relate to anything substantial in the series. Why isn't the narrative focused on the hunt for whoever stole the crystal last week? Apparently the more interesting storylines are being left to Tess' lackeys.

Its not the fact that she accepted it, its the fact that there was practically no reaction to hies lies. she asked him a few questions and then said she forgave him. That's not how a person would react in this situation when they are about to get married. Chloe thought for the longest time Jimmy was who he said he was and at the last minute, when they are about to get married, he tells her everything she thought about him was true was a lie. She's not angry, or upset or disappointed she's just okay with it. The thing is that she shouldnt be okay with it, she should be pissed off. Majority of the women would be given the situation they were in.
I hated this episode and i also hated last weeks episode and i also hated Toxic. This show needs to pick it up.

Its not that the reviewer only cares about her character, its the fact that they are messing up her character this season so she can get hitched to that idiot Jimmy Olsen. Her reaction was completely unrealistic give the situation and circumstances. I hate this Chloe and Jimmy Storyline.

Technically, can't they NOT get married unless they get divorced or widowed or etc if they want to keep to the canon or whatever it's called to refer to the original, genuine storyline?

Thats different. Clark and Lex's relationship danced around the fact that they both didnt trust each other completely and that there were things about each other they would never realize by asking about it. Its bsides the fact about Chloe and Jimmy. Their relationship is completely different than Lex's and Clark's. Its not like they were trying to get married

it has nothing to do with canon! im talking about the situation the characters are in that just made it the dumbest relationship this show has had. they can get married but its the factt hat given everything these two do to each other, the writers are pushing forward with a wedding in a relaitonship where these two people constantly hurt each other. its horrible.

And see, this here is the problem - not just with this review, but with people who are claiming Lois & Clark is too soon or too much because it happens in the future.
The review doesn't seem to understand that the future is now. And one of the major storylines of the season is the relationship between Lois and Clark. PS3 aren't showing us all this stuff between Clois just for the anvils and the "wink, wink"'s. They're actually telling the story of how Lois and Clark started to fall in love with each other - in the SV universe, unrelated to the movies or any other Superman telling.
And you can't tell the story of how two people fell in love with each other without, you know, actually telling it.
So some are just missing the forest for the trees wrt this.

I'm always curious why these reviewers seem so biased against Smallville from the get go. I understand having issues with a TV show (we've all been there) but normally we start from the 'excited' aspect and then go to 'satisfied' to 'so wrong!' depending on the content of the episode. This reviewers sounds like one of those 'Chloe Sullivan needs a real man- like ME!' sort.
As for why Chloe is so accepting of deceit- look at her history when she spied on Clark for Lionel Luthor right up to presently lying to her fiance about her Brainiac condition. If anyone could understand poor choices, its Chloe.

Whoever this is needs to lighten the f- up. It's a show about Superman before he's Superman, the whole premise is based on 'wink wink, nudge nudge.' I think it's a nice touch.
The thing about Smallville is, for the most part, everyone knows how it ends. Unlike most stories and shows on television, this is the case, so it's the only show that can do the 'wink nudge.'
Chloe is a forgiving person, and realizes how hard it must be for Jimmy to reveal this. It doesn't change who Jimmy is, just a part of where he came from. And don't act like Chloe wouldn't have done this two seasons ago: she found out Clark's secret and didn't turn him away because he'd lied to her for years before that.
Reading this infuriates me. Screw you IGN.

For all those complaining about the reviewer, keep in mind that they have their opinion too just like you. The thing is though is that they made sound arguments as to why they hated this episode. Things are being lightswitched right now just so things can be cannon with the show and while you might like it, believe it or not, thats not how you write a story much less a tv show. things need to be consistent and move at a good pace, but its not like that with this show. thigns are jumping all around and make people seem out of character and inconsistent with who they were a week ago. its terrible writing no matter how you look at it. Ign had the right to rate this episode at a 4.9 out of 10.

Oh, I have many reasons why I don't like IGN reviews. For one, they make factual mistakes all the time. Second the things he is complaining about are the heart of what make this show. This show is one giant nudge and wink, and if he doesn't like that then maybe he should just give it a rest.
Clark has been saving himself since many seasons back and Kryptonite will always have a heavy presence in the show because there have been two freaking meteor showers. Very logical, plus how else would they have had SUPERMAN succumb to some random jeweler? He would have walked in, saved Lois, punched the guy and walked out...
His complaints are trivial. He complains whenever a big villain shows up like Zod saying that he was misplaced and shouldn't be there yet but then again he also complains whenever he see's Kryptonite. So should Clark walk around Smallville invincible, nothing harming him...? I can't recall hearing a positive review from IGN about this show for the longest time.
I have a ton more reasons but I don't feel like typing them out. Maybe if this discussion progresses, I may be in the mood to continue it.

Not everyone thinks like you Santez, I liked this episode and I don't mind when a person bashes an episode but I've just been to the IGN boards and many of the posters also disagree with this guy, which means that most of the guys at IGN liked this episode but only this guy seems to despise it. Also would you believe that one of them called us 'one of Smallville's harshest critics and that even we loved the episode'.

Just to lighten things up this is what a member of IGN thinks of us:
"read some more comments and am happy that the fans of the show are saying so and we are drowning out those negative comments. Smallvillepodcast.com and kryptonsite are fans of the show and they review the show as a fan and critic and judge it fairly."

Seriously -- Chloe has secrets of her own. Why would she be bothered by Jimmy's "secret" when she's the one who is being secretive? I think she forgave him because she must have understood why he did that since she also shares the same fate of having "family problem".

Besides, it just shows how the character of Chloe has grown through the years. He sounds like she shouldn't have changed or something...

^^ True
We've seen Chloe's character develop each season and her way of thinking is becoming more and more mature. :)

Why do people want the old style Chloe? I loathed Chloe until half way through season 4. (Loathe is a strong word, but you know what I mean).
What I think is: Is this too much too fast or was it earlier too little too slowly? I feel like there was some headway to be made, and they went ahead and jumped on it. It is a little quick, but this is television, and that's how things work sometimes. Also it's not like it has NO basis in the shows history. It's all been there before.

Hm-- In my opinion, PS3 are attempting to be straight-forward -- with no nonsense and I think it's great because I hate what the old TPTB did -- they tend to tease people and made certain hints that just rose the expectation on certain ship that it'll last forever which we know wont be happening. Now -- That was not clever. The filler episodes tend to be pointless. Committed is a filler episode but it's anything but pointless -- We're seeing Clark acting more mature and we actually see him using his brain to solve things and save themselves. We're seeing Lois being herself and being really weak when she's concern about her loved ones (namely Chloe and Clark) -- one of the things that can make her vulnerable in the comics too. We're also seeing something really pure in Chimmy's relationship -- the pure love, but with a bit of issue. And also a bit of glimpse of MercyOllie past.
This new season -- we've seen so much development of each characters and I'm really excited to see what they have in store for Lana.

As I said before:
Okay, let me get this straight...
You are mad because we finally have a Clark who would become Superman instead of the BDA...
We are actually getting closer to the actual mythos instead of another season of the angst-filled Clana drama....
Clark is finally working at DP and Lois is a good reporter....
PS3 is doing things right. It was Al/Miles who kept dragging down the storylines. They are the ones to blame.
Would I like 3-4 seasons for PS3 to have a chance at character development? YES. But they don't have 3-4 seasons. This may be the last season, and it is time to put the pieces in the right places.

So if someone hates the show that much, WHY WATCH IT?

For all those complaining about the reviewer, keep in mind that they have their opinion too just like you. The thing is though is that they made sound arguments as to why they hated this episode. Things are being lightswitched right now just so things can be cannon with the show and while you might like it, believe it or not, thats not how you write a story much less a tv show. things need to be consistent and move at a good pace, but its not like that with this show. thigns are jumping all around and make people seem out of character and inconsistent with who they were a week ago. its terrible writing no matter how you look at it. Ign had the right to rate this episode at a 4.9 out of 10.
Your are so right! Everyone has an innate right to be wrong; just like the reviewer.:) I do wonder, though, where the Chloe of old has gone?

But that is not what happened with, she went from Reporter, ambitious, snarky Chloe, to walking computer, freak, stepford wife, mother teresa Chloe!!
I am really fan of Chloe, and I donīt find her changes interesting at all! :\:\

I found Chloe accepting Jimmy's lie about his parents and forgiving him much more believable than Angela and Hodgins sudden break-up on Bones over trust. If you can't learn to forgive people, especially when you understand why they are insecure, then you won't be married long.

and that my dear is your flaw is why what you say is completely one sided and biased. to say you dont care about other peoples opinions because they are negative shows you have a very obscure perspective on things.
Sorry if you don't like my way of thinking but at least I was being honest with my feelings. If you want to call me flawed than I have lots of company since there is no person that is perfect. Please don't call me dear again because you haven't earned that right and at this rate I don't think you ever will. Oh yes, be careful when you get down from your high horse. I wouldn't want you to fall and hurt yourself;)

Exactly why I agree with Chloe with this one.
As for Chloe's development :
Would be reporter> best friend> spy>secret keeper> reporter>computer genius> advice giver> Jimmy's girlfriend> controlled by an alien computer > Fiance'> wife> crazed evil entity out to destroy mankind.
Yep, that character development right there, (sarcasm). Anyways I like Chloe's character growth in that scene, it just shows that she has learnt from her mistake in the 'secret and lies' business and shows she has grown and matured. If you don't like that then I won't argue with you because that's your opinion.

This is all that needs to be said on the matter.
Although I do feel compelled to mention one last thing - Jimmy lied about his parents because he was ashamed.
CHLOE IS LYING EVERY DAY TO PROTECT THE FACT THAT HER FRIEND IS A FREAKING ALIEN.
I think she can understand the motivation behind secret-keeping. Anyone that calls that out-of-character needs to rewatch Seasons One to Seven without a blindfold and ear muffs.

in any show you're gonna have people who don't like where it is going. the new BG, a show that really couldn't get much better if it tried, even had a group of naysayers. if you read the IGN forum though as well as this forum, the majority of people are either happy about or loving season 8 so IMO it's all good. Chloe has gone in a different direction and is not gonna live happily ever after with Clark, so some people i don't think are gonna be happy no matter what happens this season.

Yes, I agree. That's pretty much how I feel about the review, too -- the reviewer seems to miss the whole point of the very premise of the show.

While being able to voice your own opinion makes this nation great, everyone also has the right to disagee in a respectful manner.Personally, I disagree with the IGN review and love the new directions PS3 is taking the series. But Hey,thats this woman's opinion and any one is free to put in their 2 cents.

So, wait, the reviewer wants Chloe to be the new Lana, Miss "Secrets and Lies"?
Newscheck, Chloe has a fricking alien entity on her skull and is hiding it from Jimmy. The Chloe that I saw on the episode was a complete mature adult person that understands hypocrisy, something that the reviewer seems not to.
