One thing I still can't figure out is, why was Lois lying when she told the jeweler that she never cheated on her fiancé. I mean, if you're not engaged, you can't cheat on your fiancé. If you're not even dating someone (Clark and Lois), you can't cheat on that person. So, why did the lie detector say that Lois was lying.

Lie detectors interpret your body's response to an answer, not the veracity of the answer itself. Therefore, your question should be "Why did Lois think she was lying when she answered the question?" Does Lois consider her "reunion" with Ollie after she started to develop feelings for Clark cheating? Possibly... I'm sure she has a reason, though I'm not sure I could identify it clearly.

I think it's because Lois felt she cheated on Clark.
I figured it was because she's felt these feelings for Clark for awhile, she just pushes them down. He's been consumed with Lana the whole time she's known him. But the first Ollie, Clark, Lois encounter had Ollie wondering out loud if they weren't attracted to each other. We also learned Lois talked a lot about "Smallville" to Ollie. When Clark came in the room Ollie was stunned to see a handsome man not the geek Lois likes to pretend he is to make it easier to hide from herself.

it might be from the time she was going with Ollie and kissed Clark thinking it was Ollie.
Other than that it wasn't clear to me.

Perhaps it was measuring her new growing feelings for Clark.Lois may have had some feelings for him while she was with Ollie or Grant, and felt she was "cheating" on Clark during those relationships.

Maybe Lois was engaged at one time and she cheated on her fiance?

i was confused too maybe it was that she had no fiancee so saying she had one and never cheated on him was a lie...? idk

Like Kardiac already posted, the lie detector picked up on the physiological responses of Lois' body when answering the question. The way she answered it was as if she was staying "in character" or "under cover." She said something like, "no, of course not" like she was playing the role Clark's fiance. That response would be a lie no matter what the actual content of the words are because they were captured under false pretenses as the two were not really an engaged couple.

Yeah I didn't really get that either. I can't think on what basis she would think she cheated on Clark when she was never in a relationship with him.
Seems like it was just an excuse for the writers to electric shock Clark.
The explanation being her reaction was just from anxiety of the situation.

If Lois had answered the question, "well, we are really undercover reporters, not an engaged couple, so there is no way I could have cheated on this man as we have never been in a romantic, exclusive relationship," then Clark would not have gotten the zap.
She chose to answer the question as if she were his fiance, so even though she answered no, the whole premise was a lie and her body knew it and it was captured on the lie detector and Clark got zapped for it.

technically Lois was lying anyway. She isn't engaged. That's the lie.

I'm with stenochick on this one. I think it was because she really was telling a lie. Clark wasn't really her fiance, so if she answered Yes, he would have been shocked, she answered No, and he was shocked. Either answer would be a lie because he's not her fiance.

Maybe it was the lie of 'pretending' clark was her fiance.. just a thought but I was honestly figuring she was engaged b4.

^No I don't think Lois has ever been engaged before...I think we would've heard something about that before if she had been..
I honestly think she got shocked because as others have stated she doesn't have a fiancee...Their relationship is fabricated..So no matter what she answered 'yes' or 'no' it would've have technically been a lie, just from the way the questions was stated.

The only answer that wasn't a lie there would be "he is not my fiancee".

Exactly. Plus Lois was on edge at that point. Her emotions were out of control and that will regester as a lie.
If you can have a panic attack on command you can fool a lie detector test into giving inconclusive results every time. :rotfl: It will say all your doing is lying.

Well, that's only useful information if there are no electrodes tied to you while attached to the lie detector.

Yeah... electrodes do make it a different situation... you can get it to read true all the time if you are a psysopath... but I figure learning how to have a panic attack on cue is more realistic then learning to be a that crazy ;)

Exactly. And Clark told her when she got asked the second question to not try and "outthink" the question before she gives an answer, which is what she was trying to do when she answered the first question, going along with the lie that they were engaged, which they weren't.
