Well I don't know if there's already a thread on this topic and besides, I didn't find it appropriate enough to post it under Smallville Episode discussions since they're grouped under individual seasons and I'm talking the whole general 5 seasons.

What in your opinion is the Best Episode Ever. Not your favourite episode but as a viewer and a critic, the Best Episode?

For me, watching Smallville again and again, I'd have to say that it's Pariah, Season 4.

Why? Because of these reasons:

1)Chloe finally finds out Clark's secret and her initial reaction is fun to watch but as time passes and she comes to grips with it, she takes a whole new stance on it, a supportive stance, thanks to Lois' great advice and I think it's one of those episodes with great sentimental value

2)Sarah Carter's character of Alicia Baker is boosted to the max and then some. Well though I must say I was terribly upset when Alicia died, I've always liked her character. My favourite "Freak of the Week". She brought out so much more depth in Clark. Making him feel the emotional highs (Red Kryptonite) and lows (Wronging her for attacking Jason and Lana and ultimately, her death......damn that stupid sand guy, Tim)

3)Tom Welling's best performance (in my opinion). I've never really liked Tom Welling as an actor. For me, he's never been able to perfect his character's emotions as well as Michael Rosenbaum does. But in this episode you actually see tears! Tears goddammit! And the look on his face when he's strangling sand guy, Tim, to death is just natural. His desperation, shock and anguish at Alicia's death is way better than those emotions that he portrayed in Season 5's reckoning with Lana's "death" and Pa Kent's death.

4)I'm willing to overlook the dumb storyline involving Lana and Jason and Mrs Jason cause that was just unecessary.

Though many fans have said that Season 4 was generally weaker due to the poor storyline of the witches and the stones, it did showcase a few high class episodes.

But yeah....what do you think?

My favorite: Exile

The Best: Shattered followed by Memoria

I choose Shattered because IMO it is the best written episode ever the directing was great MR's acting was insanely awsome. You see another side of Clark "Don't underestimate farm boys – baling all that hay can make you pretty strong" showing that atleast one writer remembers Clark's summer in Metropolis. The episode was so well structered from begining to end and the end was so cool with Lex watching Clark demolish the car and Johnny Cash's "Hurt" playing with Lex in the Asylum was a perfect cliff-hanger for the break.

I didn't like Pariah at all. I didn't like the FOTW and thought that TW's acting was off. The only good thing was the role of Alicia in planting the seed in Clark's mind that he will eventually need to reveal his abilities in order to free himself from a life of lying. That is a very important point in his development, but I still did not like the episode.

The best has to be the Pilot. It is probably the most perfectly crafted hour of television ever - from the writing to the character introduction to the special effects. Even the acting seemed right to me. It all came together beautifully. Definitely a tough act to follow!

im not sure if i can pick only one episode as the best, but shattered probably had the best "overall statistics".

the episode that had a bigger emotional impact on me, would be 5-13 "Vengeance", probably because i feel that clark finally spilled some serious and well acted tears for once.

For me I would say that its a close tie between Splinter
Reckoning and Vengeance. Each of these episode have what I consider the most emotional moments of any other episodes.
Splinter: Clark is almost having a nervous breakdown. Almost come close to killing Lana
Reckoning: Clark, Lana, Lex, Johnathan and Martha all display moving moments.
Clark seeing that Lana has just been killed is completly over come with emotion.
Clark feeling betrayed by his own powers to save Lana yet to lose his dad.
Lana displaying her hurt while at the funeral when holding hands with Clark. Her also displaying true joy after saying yes to Clark outside the Kent's home.
Lex showing his anguish that Lana would accept Clark over him
and grabbing Lana. As well as his shock of seeing that he just caused Lana's death after chasing her.
Johnathan becoming very angry after Lionel shows him a picture that could destoy his family.
Martha showing her pain of loosing Johnathan while still at the house just before going to the funeral.
Vengeance: This episode alone displays near the end the most heart felt moment between characters ever on Smallville( that being Clark and his mom after wacthing an old video with young clark riding the tractor along with his father. Can we say true tear jerker.
There may be other episodes that are better as far as action goes but none better at moving your emotions then the three just mentioned.

I don't think I have a favourite episode just yet but the episode that gets me out of my seat everytime is Crusade where Kalel flies!!! He does it with such ease and even though there has been debate of Clark flying or super-jumping in Hidden and Reckoning, I still think Crusade was amazing. Even though it was Kalel flying around. I just hope soon Clark realises his destiny and starts flying. I know we may have to wait for the summer for Superman Returns movie to see Brandon Routh (movie Clark Kent) flying but we have been waiting to see Clark from Smallville fly since the pilot. Well I have been anyway.

I loved tht episode as it was like passing a trade from father 2 son, clark learnin of his true origins from the man who did it all before in the movies. Plus they used some of the music from the original movies which really put tingles down my spine.

But my all time favorite would have to be Exile. It was just the perfect episode and is the one I re-watched the most. It was part of the only and great 4-episode storyline starting from Calling in S2, then Exodus, then Exile, and finally Phoenix. It was a really great arc.

But I am starting to love Solitude. It was so greatly packed with action and important events and had great suspense. My favorite from S5 so far.

Talisman from S3 was cool. It had lots of great foreshadowing with that cave legend. Also good was Asylum where we find out just how far Lionel is willing to go to protect himself.

Stray was another important episode for me since I didn't watch too much in S1 and this is the one that got me hook, line & sinker. I started catching up after this, and I also liked Jitters, which was also full of action. I love the way level 3 was originally done (didn't like the way they did it in Mortal).

Jinx introduced a great arc that was never used yet. The level 33.1 scene is a great one to use, and I hope they bring it back next season. It would be cool to see Lex using whatever army he has up there against Clark once they're finally bitter enemies.

It's funny you mention that Ryan because it's the exact same for me My favorite characters went Clark Then JK but the best episodes of the series IMO are Shattered and Memoria which are heavily Lex based stories.

As a fellow Clark fan, that doesn't seem ironic to me. Shattered is actually a very Clark-heavy episode, and IMO, features a very good TW performance. Its not in my top 5, but its probably in my top 10.

Season 4's Crusade is my favourite.

Although we are kinda cheated when Kal-El flies and somehow Clark forgets how to do it, I love the take off bit and the reaction from Martha. She looks both shocked and amazed and thats when she (and she says as much later in the ep) realises what Clark is capable of...."Anything"

If he ever does get to fly properly without there being any doubt as to whither hes flying or just 'falling with style' I hope the CGI(effects) is as good because it was awsome.

Favorite episode for me, though, is Hidden. Pure rollercoaster ride of emotion. Also features my favorite piece of instrumental music they've had for SV. IE: when Clark is getting the defibulator. That music was so good they had to use it again for Reckoning (Lana almost crash scene).

It has to be 'Rogue'.
Ever since I saw it, there has never been an episode to better it in my opinion.
'Shattered', 'Memoria', 'Pilot', 'Transference','Rosetta', 'Onyx' are other great episodes, but 'Rogue' really hit the spot for me.
Here are the reasons why I love it.

1. The opening bus scene is amazing and one of the better special effects that we have seen.
2. An amazing villain who wasn't a teenage meteor freak.
3. Great superman references.
4. I actually liked Clark in the episode. Welling did an amazing job being angry with Phelan, and also showed his reluctance to help him in a life of crime very well.
5. Lex catching Clark on the CCTV.
6. No kryptonite!

Rogue is the most underrated episode of the show in my opinion.

The bus stopping is my favorite special effects shot and one hell of an opener. I also love that it is Clark's first trip to Metropolis and the outstanding Supes reference with Clark making fun of the "S" breastplate talking about not going into battle with that on his chest. Phaelon is my favorite villain of the show without a doubt. I love the interaction between Clark and his parents, as well as Clark's development in this episode. The end of the episode is one of my favorite endings because of Lex catching the blur on camera.

This episode also has one of my favorite scenes where Clark watches the bullet go by him after Phaelon attempts to shoot him, and I love it when Clark punches the glass too.

There have only been a few episodes I loved more than this one, but I show my support for this amazing episode every chance that I can get.

Run

The reason is two fold. First the last scene with Clark and Bart was for me, just amazing. For me I've never seen Clark open up to anyone like that, not even Lana. And two, it's where clark first gets a glimps of the outside, and learns that Lex, Lois, Metropolis, Krypton, thats all just one drop in the bucket compared to whats in store for the man of steel.

The whole backstory between Lex and Lionel was absolutely amazing.

I especially loved the father/son scene at the end. Rarely does Lionel ever show emotion...he almost never lets people know what he is really feeling. And to see him rattled after Lex told him that Lilian killed Julian...it was incredible.

My ultimate favorites episode's....

I cannot choose between Exile, Shattered, Asylum, Red, Rogue, Hourglass and Memoria . For me these episodes were all superb. I do not think there has been any episode in either season 4 or 5 that even comes close to any of these. Just my opinion.

'Rogue' is the best episode in my opinion.
Such a classic.
'Shattered' as many others have said, is superb and a good contender.
'Memoria' is also one of my favourites. Great back story, and Lionel's reason for mis treating Lex is also revealed.

I always kind of saw Shattered and Asylum as a 2 parter. It had the fantastic and dark scenes with Lex and Lionel and the cool idea of having 3 previous FOTW teaming up to give Clark a beating. The show was flying for me at this point.

My choice is Hidden. We see why Clark can't be mortal with his "hero" complex. It had many great scenes. I also like Blank because of the interaction with Chloe and the rediscovery of Clark's powers.

Everyone's got great choices. I'd say that while my favorite hasn't been picked yet - it is really too close to call.

I have to pick Insurgence. It is the episode that I always get into. That I just love to watch.

We have continuity - fear of heights, Martha working for Lionel, and their whole 'thing', even the long distance from Smallville to Metropolis was covered - with Jonathan not arriving at Luthorcorp until it was dark out.

There was the awesome teaser with Lex searching for bugs. We get to see Clark be a hero in Metropolis. We see what Lionel has been up to, and we get to wonder what he's planning to do and how much he really knows. And of course, there is the whole Lex as a villain and a hero and in the end he is just an unloved child.
Great episode - start to finish.

Favorite episode of all time is Shattered, which in my opinion is the best written and acted episode of the whole series. The pacing of the episode and the way that it was edited was just fantastic. The line that will always send chills down my spine is "I was right about you all along Clark... you're not even human". The ending with Lex in the straight jacket and Johnny Cash's "Hurt" playing was so amazing as well.

Another one of my all time favorite episodes is Rogue. I feel it is perhaps the most underrated episode of the whole show and there are not a lot of people that give it the credit it deserves. It had a fantastic non FOTW villain, the best effects sequence they have done with the bus crash, fantastic Superman references, nice interaction with Clark and his parents, and one of the best endings ever with Lex seeing the blur on his computer. It was just so great from start to finish with everything being spot on. Why more people don't love this episode is beyond me.

Yeah "Shattered" rocks the best episode of the series without adoubt but an episode that goes over looked is "Memoria" that was the second best episode IMO it had alot of the same qualites as "Shattered" and it show's flashbacks of Clark and Lex's history. I find it ironic that the two best episodes IMO are Lex centric when Clark is easily my favorite character. Can I join the "Rogue" fan club?.:D

For me, Memoria was good, but just a tad bit overrated. It was a beautiful episode and one that I really loved. But I felt the pacing was a tad slow and that the flashback to Krypton could have been done better as a whole. The loft scene with My Immortal playing in the background when Clark hugs his mom gets me each time I see it. It would have been so awesome if they could have gotten the actor who played Lex in The Pilot and Lineage to reprise his role as young Lex. Even though the kid who was chosen for Memoria, did a decent job, he looked nothing like MR. Whereas the kid from the Pilot and Lineage looked like he could actually be a younger version of MR.

The fact that it is such an amazing episode from start to finish and it is not higher regarded by the fans. Anytime something does not get the recognition it deserves it is underrated.

Let's take a look at the episode.

The bus crash in my opinion is underrated in terms of the effects that were used. It is actually my favorite effects sequence they have done. Now granted it wasn't the most important like the flying in Crusade or the leap of faith in Insurgence. But, it was the most realistic looking. There wasn't any need for any CGI. It came off looking extremely realistic, and the sound effect work there was just insanely good.

Next there is Phaelon who is extremely underrated in terms of the overall group of villains on the show. He was killed off before season one even reached the midpoint, so he is often overlooked and/or forgotten. But he is definately my favorite villain from the show. Up until then in S1, anyone who caused a threat or challenged Clark was a FOTW. Phaelon caused more trouble and havock in Clark's life than any meteor freak ever did, and he did it using his mind. There was no need for powers. To this day, I still feel that Phaelon was the biggest threat to Clark in terms of villains. They screwed up with the whole Lex as Zod thing, so I have a hard time taking that seriously.

Fantastic Superman references in this episode with the breastplate, and an even better quote of "I can't exactly see myself going into battle with that on my chest". Smallville has been very successful at putting a humorous spin on the Supes mythology when forshadowing, and this was one of the best.

Back in the earlier seasons, one of the things I really loved about the show was the interaction between Clark and his parents. This episode had some of the best in my opinion, especially with Clark and Johnathan. This episode showed a different, more emotional side to Clark. I love how they showed that Johnathan was the person who helped Clark hold it together. One of my favorite scenes ever is the prison scene in which Clark and Johnathan touch fists on the glass.

Then there is the ending of the episode which is often forgotten. In my opinion it was one of the best endings they had. Leaving the episode with Lex seeing the blur on the computer was just so perfect.

This episode also has a few of my favorite Clark centric scenes in it.

- Love him smashing the glass with his fist
- Love the scene where he punches the column in anger
- Absolutely love the scene where Phaelon shoots at Clark and he watches the bullet go by. The look on his face is priceless.
- There is also a scene that makes me laugh my ass off. It is at the beginning when Lex tells Clark to keep friends close and the QB closer to win Lana, and then after Lex introduces Victoria, Clark whispers "How close are you gonna keep her?" LOL :rotfl:

You definately have a place man. Besides me, there has only been a handful of people praising Rogue and you have been one of them. Until the episode wars took place, I had never seen that many people come out of the woodwork and actually show support for Rogue. If I recall right the show itself and this board had more posters/viewers back then :lol:. We had a lot more members heavily involved on the board hence Rogue getting it's butt kicked :lol:. As the show downspiraled as did the members involvement on the board :\. Just noticing the observations.

i actually take back that i said reckoning was the best. Now that i think about it, Rosetta is the best because it is when clark truly finds out about his past and origins.i also like how chris reve said whateve you do in life must be because you have truly found yourself, not by looking at your past and your kryptonian heritage.

Just based on experience of all the time I have been on the boards and other sites. There have always been a lot of favorite episode threads that come up and I always mention Rogue. People have often wondered why I liked the episode so much, and a lot of fans often overlook it. A few years back when I held another episode wars that covered the first three seasons, Rogue got its ass seriously kicked. Everyone was hung up on Asylum.

Yeah, the board did have a lot more members back then. But back when I held the episode wars it was at the end of season three which is the same season Asylum aired. Everyone was so nuts over the combo of Shattered and Asylum. Shattered is still my favorite episode, but to me, Asylum was only decent. In the same manner when you compare Exile to Phoenix. The momentum just doesn't carry over as well.

Hell yeah Ryan check my custom user text LOL:D . I agree that the pacing was a little slow I felt the same way about "Covenant" which was a very good episode. I think they had serious problems trying to get the rights to do the scene on Krypton Al/Miles said so in the commentary and it wasn't that bad because it was coming from a baby's memory. One of the things that made it so great was the lighting it was probably better then any episode other then "Exile". The loft scene to "My Immortal" was one of the most beautiful scenes of the series and it show's why Clark will become superman due to good parenting and in contrast why Lex will become the villian of the story due to Lionel's parenting. the thing that got to me the most was Lex's line "You might have actually loved me" poor Lex it's amazing to think of how diffrent he would be if Lionel didn't think he killed Julian. I would have really liked if they had of used the kid from "The Pilot" and "Lineage" he was really good my favorite was the Clark kid played by Malkolm Alburquenque he lookd so much like TW.

Yeah my favorite non romantic ship is Clark/Jonathan because he is such a factor in the man Clark will become and that prison scene with them is one of my favorites of the series after it I was like wow who wouldn't want to have a dad like that. Another line that comes to memory was in "Obsession" where Alicia ask's if Clark's parents were over protective and he says something like "My parents are great they worry about me that someone might find out, But they dont try to change me." then Alicia says "Maybe that's why your so special".

LOL at that line when I finally convinced my friends to start watching Smallville we had a huge marathon of season 1 and that had everyone in stiches.

Arrival one of my favorite episodes ever. I loved it enough to put it on my top five list. Probably number three after Rogue. Vengenance was flat out amazing. Splinter was fantastic. Welling did a great job. Hidden was excellent, but it is a tad bit overrated in my opinion. It is one of S5's best. But why do so many people consider it to be the best or one of the best of the whole series? Lexmas turned out to be outstanding. I didn't have much faith in it at all to be honest. But it suprised me.

I posted this a while back...and uh...it needs editing!!

The best of season 5 was definitely not Reckoning. Don't ask me what I was thinking. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't great. I think the best of season 5 was Arrival by a landslide. But as I said, Splinter was my favorite. In fact, Arrival could also take the cake for best episode of the series. I thought it was fantastic, but it's a very tough choice between that and Transference.

I'm not sure why Onyx isn't getting more votes. The episode really shows the darkness that really inside Lex and Dark Lex even states he's considered killing them a few times but his good half won out. This is the first we see of the Lex that will come to the surface. When his good half disolves away this Lex will be all that is left and is pure evil. Great dual acting by MR.

I'm also fond of Pariah however it is a sad episode since I really started to like Alicia. The writers seem not to want to remember this episode since Clark says he loved Alicia, yet takes it back later in saying he's only ever loved Lana. Oh well. Great amount of emotion in this episode. First time someone Clark really cared about dies. Downside is Lana acting like a ***** and not appologizing for how she judged Alicia. Nice to see redemption in a FOTW.

Agreed. its interesting how Clark and Chloe regarded the half of Lex that showed evil as the "evil lex" and the other one as the "good lex", when each one was just as much lex as the other.

I still like Crisis? I dont know I like alot of other episodes. Truth and Delete, s3 was a good season for me.

It was a tough choice between Red, Exile and Splinter, but I went for Red. Tom Welling was great portraying Clark on Red K, showing a rebellious side of Clark and he looked hot with the black leather jacket and sunglasses. Plus, Pete and Jonathan got to save the day, which was good to see.

Yeah I have to agree except I would add add Craving to the list of episodes I dont agree with But my favorite episode is in there in Exile. But overall even though it is impossible to account for everyones favorite episodes with only 10 choices. But I would say if you were trying to cater to the fans the top 10 episodes from the feed back I have heard would be more like.

Pilot- Where it began, a great episode.

Tempest- They suck you in to the chance of a Clark/Chloe relationship, and then they throw a tornado at you. "Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war." In my opinion, the best quote of season 1.

Insurgence- Jumping from building to building. I watched that scene over and over again.

Perry- I like how his powers are on the fritz. Not gone, but not working right. That's something I wondered if they'd explore. We already see Clark learn new abilities, I wanted to see what happened when he couldn't control any of them. "Memories fade, but a Google search never forgets."

Crush- I can't explain why I liked it, but I know I did.

Run- Always been a fan of the Flash. This episode is my favorite of all the ones where an actual Super Hero (as opposed to someone caught in the meteor shower) comes to Smallville.

Transference- When the Heat Vision goes off because Lionel is arroused in Clarks body, I laugh EVERY time.

Blank- Clark loses his memory and Chloe tries to keep him from being exposed. Very well done, and kind of shows Chloe at her best when it comes to her friendship with Clark.

Spell- I love the episode, love the audio commentary for it more.

Mercy- A lot like Saw, which is a movie I like.


There are a few more. Lexmas, Red, Forever, but those ones are my favorite.

It's a toss-up between Blank and most likely Hidden. Blank gave us the opportunity to see Clark discover his powers again thru Chloe's eyes. Hidden enabled us to finally see a happy and open Clark plus the humor of the bedroom scene to the joy of his resurrection from his death.
I find episodes like Shattered and Memoria too depressing although extremely well done. I think the Pilot deserves an honorable mention because it set the tone and pace for things to come and it has been a tough episode for others to live up to those standards.

I've only seen a few votes for it but I have to say Stray. Smallville is supposed to be about Clark Kents journey to become Superman and it was in that episode that I actually believed he would become Superman the connection with the little brother figure the heroism it just all fit so well and it was interesting to see a non krypto freak with powers. I think it was Clark at his finest a shame it happened in season 1.

I have been watching all the seasons over again...and I have come to a conclusion...Talisman may be my favorite episode right now. It's definitely underrated..It's just a great episode that moves the Superman mythos along and Clark finally begins to realize that Lex may be his enemy.

I loved the car chase scene from Splinter, especially how that Stereophonics song, Superman was playing. Arrival was also good, except for how he once again disobeyed Jor-El. That really bugged me. After such catastrophic events, a person would have much better judgement than that. I also liked Hidden very much, especially the stopping of the missile. I think they should use the same theme/score that was playing while he was in space in Hidden again in the S6 opener (Zod) if they have a scene where he flied towards Earth right at Zod.

People are basically listing the whole show for their list of favorites. I usually try to narrow it down to a list of my top 5

Off the top of my head :

1) Shattered
2) Rogue
3) Arrival
4) Exile
5) Run

Exile has to be the #1 episode for me. There is no other episode I watched as many times as Exile. It was just very well done. My only gripe about it is that they should have given Pete a bigger role in finding his best friend.

For each season, here's how I'd do it:

Season 1: Stray (this was a pivotal episode in getting me hooked to the show, Hug, Jitters & Rogue are close behind Stray)

Season 2: Insurgence (this was another pivotal episode for me; very hard since season 2 had so many good episodes--Duplicity, Exodus, Rosetta, Red, and Rush were very close behind, while many others like Witness, Fever, and Calling were also extremely close---this has been my favorite season throughout the series)

Season 3: Exile (Shattered & Asylum are very close 2nds with Talisman & Crisis close by)

Season 4: Onyx (followed very closely by Blank, Run, Transference & Commencement)

Season 5: Solitude (was head & shoulders above the rest--this should have been the season finale as it was so full of action and developments; followed not that far behind by Splinter, Hidden, Oracle & Arrival)

And there you have my favorites of each season.

I thought reckoning was a joke of an episode. Johnathan died for nothing and Clark as usual rushed into things without thinking about the consequences. In my opinion. Compare Reckoning to earlier season episodes like Rogue, Shattered, Memoria, Exile etc and there is in my opinion an incredible drop in quality. Season 5 was awful and only Vengeance got pass marks for me. greenarrowgal.

From this list I chose Splinter, but Exile was a close second. In the end I went w/ Splinter b/c I was so impressed with Tom's acting...however I was pretty darn impressed with his looks in Exile. ;)

Third would be x-ray (a classic!)

I especially liked season 1 the best, because (in my opinion), Tom Welling was more Superman-like in season 1. Clark Kent was always helping people, rescuing them from danger or from villains, and stopping the bad guys.

Absolutely I agree with that! When you look at Welling in season 1, you really feel like you’re looking at young Superman….. When you look at him now, you just feel like you’re looking at a young model, who is more concerned with looking attractive to 14 year-old female viewers, than he is with crafting the development of his character.

My favorite Smallville episodes are:

1) 6th Season:
In Zod, Martha has a memorable quote:
"Every world needs its heroes, Clark. They inspire us to be better than we are. And they protect us from the darkness that's around the corner."

The other 2 episodes I like (6th Season) are:

Fallout, especially the Clark and Raya scenes.

Hydro (I like the whole script, the Lois and Clark kiss, the part where Clark says, "For the record, I prefer 'intergalactic traveler' over 'alien from another planet.' And I love the Chloe, Lois and Clark scene about the kiss).

Crimson, Trespass and Freak (Smallville in the Sixth Season is great).
