View Full Version : The "Clark was Awesome" Thread

Because he was, and he deserves it.
Clark was written so magnificently in this episode. I just loved seeing him portrayed so well, in some many different aspects.
He stepped in to stop Lois from doing more damage at the engagement party, then delivered a wonderful heartfelt speech for his best friend and her fiancee.
He took care of a drunken Lois, even "holding her hair" for her, and made sure she was safe and got to sleep it off.
He picked up on the clues right away that something was amiss with Chloe and Jimmy, and quickly leapt into action. Along the way, he used his brain at every step, showing some pretty invesigative skills.
He was funny, and snarky, and very entertaining while undercover with Lois.
When he'd done what he could do with Lois, I LOL when he finally supersped away from her to try and get some investigating done on "Clark time".
Upon finding Chloe and Jimmy safe and sound, he was able to put the clues together and figure out the bad guy.
His save of Lois would have been awesome...had it not been for something he couldn't possibly have anticipated, a kryptonite watch aka a plot contrivance.
But I LOVED him looking around for his options, and then finally grabbing the guy, head butting him, ripping off the watch and dropping it down the grate, heat-visioning the pipe to obscure Lois' ability to see what was going on, and then saving both himself and Lois.
And that last elevator scene? Perfect, and totally Superman. My Superman, anyway :)
And Tom Welling, you rock my world.

I just thought it would be nice to show the big guy some love, especially in an episode where he's written so very well, and portrayed so perfectly.

Tom was at his best with this episode and I'm so happy he is getting to shine playing Clark this season.
Yes, he was amazing from beginning to end. I especially loved how he looked around for a way to get them out of the torture situation... and he saw the vent and got an idea. I loved how he was just WAITING for the bad guy to get near him to implement his plan.
Welling was Superman tonight. I adore him even more than I already do.
ITA, BadToad. They're doing such a great job with Clark this year.
In one of ED's preseason interviews she said something regarding Clark to the effect of "he's so heroic. It's lovely what they've done for him." I wish I could find the exact quote because at the time I just had such a hard time believing. I brushed it off as one of those things they say every year. But for some reason the phrase lovely still struck me and I remembered it.
And after tonight I just couldn't agree more. Clark was Awesome. And I'll paraphrase ED one more time just because I think it's so spot on. It's absolutely lovely what they've done for Clark this year.

Clark has been written well all season long thus far. The big difference this season is that TPTB have given him skills to solve some things on his own. I also love it how he has to try to get rid of Lois all of the time. That's great stuff. I just feel that Clark this season has been written a lot like Clark in season 1 where he actually was able to figure things out for himself rather than having his hand held. Also, sometimes it's nice watching an episode where Clark is not surrounded by people who know his secret. It makes Clark look more intelligent to have to outsmart the people around him because he needs to keep his secret. Message to TPTB...keep on doing what you are doing because it's working for me. Oh, and on a totally different subject, please...please let the Rays beat the Red Sox tonight.

Ah, but I need to save some adjectives for the coming weeks, since I'm sure I'm going to need them. I'm so very thrilled with Clark's writing this season. THANK GOD for a change in producers.

It sure is, and thanks for quoting ED there, because I remember loving that quote as well.

I agree!! It made perfect sense that Clark felt that Lois was holding him back (that's how it SHOULD be) and that he was annoyed by that. Also, I think that it was great that he was confused why he didn't have powers and the second he pinpointed that it was the watch, he just had to figure out a way to make it all work out. And even his scenes with Lois at the DP is very much a back and forth, with Clark connecting the dots on his own. I love it.

Yeah, I think that part of the reason I feel the same love and excitement for the show that I felt back in S1 is because Lois doesn't know Clark's secret. It adds a hint of mischeviousness to Clark's character and gives him some sort of conflicts to deal with. And it's not just about "secrets and lies" -- it's just a matter of fact thing. He's a guy who saves people and doesn't want his partner to know all about it. It works well, within this context, without being angsty.
Message to TPTB...keep on doing what you are doing because it's working for me.
I second that!! :D

What was nice about that was that they didn't dumb Lois down either. While Clark did come up with the idea about connecting the actions of all the engaged couples, Lois had already gotten there a few minutes earlier. It was a very nice give and take, with neither character dumbed down to prop up the other. SV has such a problem with maintaining that balance, and it was so great to see them get it right.

Clark is rocking the awesome this season. I'm gonna quote myself from another thread.
I'm LOVING Clark Kent.
Every episode this season he is stone cold AWESOME!
I do like how Lois and Clark are playing off eachother. It just feels like a more adult show that I'm watching.
And just because it needs to be said again CLARK IS FRACKING AWESOME THIS SEASON!

Thank you,BadToad for this thread. You're right. It's LONNGGG overdued and much deserved. Tom was at his usual best. For a while now I've been a little put out by the lack of good lines for him. I mean,it seems that Erica and Allison always have the best "worded" lines in the show. But I realized tonight that isn't about who has the best lines. Tom's strenght is in facial expressions. Case in point....the jewerly store scene. His reaction to Lois' line,"Tell him,Cupcake",was exquisite! I haven't crack-up laughing that hard in a long....LONG..time. That made my night. HE made my night.....but then again he does that every week.He truely IS amazing.

This is the type of attitude and actions that I have been waiting to be done by Clark for YEARS now. This Clark is getting closer and closer to becoming Superman, and I can't get enough of it.
PS- Mr. Welling if you read these forums, I have a favor to ask. I know you are worried about being typecast as Clark Kent/Superman. But even your friend, the late great Christopher Reeve said he saw something "super" in you when he met you on the show all those years ago. If you are offered the job, please, please don the tights as Superman. YOU are the heir to George Reeves and Christopher Reeve's Superman that we have been waiting for, even if you do it just once for only one movie. So please....just think about it.

Heck my favorite part was when Lois answered "yes" to the "do you love him" question and he prematurely winced expecting to get shocked(and then the look of amazement on his face). So, did Lois really finangle that thing off of her finger?

The Engagement Party was brilliant, Clark knew when to step in to completly stop Lois from ruining it and managed to come up with a speech like that which even made Jimmy smile.
When Clark and Lois ran into Oliver you could tell Lois just thought it was awkward because of him being her ex, but I think it was way more awkward for Clark because of last week, it was obvious Clark didn't like the jab directed at him and even managed to keep up a poker face.
The rest of the episode he was really good, with playing the sarcastic remarks and making them funny, investigating, and the rescue scene.
I loved the last bit aswell, the iconic line and the fact it looks like Lois is going to make him confront his feelings now.
Right on ginnyfan. That head butt was awesome. He was proactive and attacked the psycho at a precisely accurate moment.

Exactly my thoughts. Also a good line to use from the Superman Movie, it was a good reference and felt appropriate aswell.
There were several moments during this episode when it felt like the real Lois & Clark (LnC style). It was very refreshing to see both characters play their roles so well. And Tom has definitely been great so far.

I loved Clark in the chair. The slow look upward, after waking up. His dark circles under his eyes, made him seem so weakened but still beautiful.
Loved how he gently saved Lois from being hit by the taxi.

Badtoad, is there really anything more to say after that great post? ITA.
PS3 and whoever this new guy is who wrote this episode know what they are doing with Clark Kent. He is no longer a guest star on his own show and is no longer passive, dependent, and depressed. Season 8 has been totally worth the wait. I'm glad I never gave up in this show. My venting last season about Clark was not in vain.

It makes me so happy to see so many people chiming in with the Clark love. :D
One of the things that was worrying me about this episode was wondering how Clark and Lois would be rescued...because thats probably what would've happened under AlMiles. But instead, we had a Clark who saved himself and Lois. I love how he figured out a way to solve the problem, and also to obscure what he was doing. Its those sorts of moments when I just want to scream with happiness that the writers took the time to write the scene all the way through, and correctly for Clark. This new writer can stay!
And on a purely shallow note, TW's arms are crazy.

I absolutely loved this chapter. I think I haven't seen so many expressions in Clark's face in ages. He's been so stiff during the past seasons his expressions have been so limitied that you can almost feel that the actor is not enjoying playing the character.
I particularly liked the part when he gets ready to receive the shock after Lois's 'yes' and his expression when it doesn't come. He's all 'what? she loves me?' Tom played that beautifully.
The other scene I loved is in the elevator, when Lois tells him 'don't tell me you believed it' (or something of the kind) and he, trying to look nonchalant, says 'I didn't' and glances at her. I think that, since 'Transferece' that Tom doesn't display such ample range of expressions.
Sigh,
I agree. Clark was awesome in this episode (and he was great and awesome in the other episodes of this season as well, imo).
Thank you very much for this thread BadToad. :)

Moonshayde, there is a PS3 appreciation thread. Check it out!
That is a great point about the gentleman Clark. You definitely saw the tenderness tonight, right from the start in the teaser scene when he lifts Lois off the chair, but especially when he was telling Lois to "just tell the truth, don't try to out-think it" and then when he knelt down to unshackle her and said, "let's get you out of here."
My favorite love-me-tender Clark scene was in Bizarro when Clark ever-so-gently lifts the little id-tag off of Chloe's big toe in the morgue. That was sexier than an elevator love scene, IMO.

Clark was awesome, Tom was awesome! I thought it wasn't possible to love them more than I alredy did:D but... I'm happy I was wrong! I love the character and the actor more than ever!
Tom did a wonderful job in Hydro after kissing Lois. Now, he did a even more wonderful one in the elevator scene. And it's not because I'm a Cloiser... but Tom really knows how to make us understand what's going inside Clark's mind only with a look, an expression.

I totally agree with this thread! This whole season has been my favorite Clark season! Amazingly written and you can tell that Tom is just having the time of his life playing this really fun, strong, heroic Clark Kent, the way he should've been, IMO, after his tough lessons in seasons 5 and 6.
Another cool thing I wanted to add about Clark in this episode was that when he gave the speech, he wasn't nervous at all. He was perfectly confident, which really fits the man behind the cape...this is the way Superman talks to the press and gives speeches, with such ease...my only worry is that it'll be hard for him to separate his Superman nature with Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter, but I get the feeling he's going more the "Lois and Clark" route, the post-Crisis John Byrne route with it: Clark Kent is the real person, and Superman is more of a symbol. So Clark Kent can be very strong and confident and not have to be too nerdy, and Superman is more of a distant, powerful, almost ethereal sort of god-like character, perhaps more silent and omniscient than the very human Clark Kent. I'm intrigued to see where they go with this, since...(MILD SPOILER ALERT): Clark is supposedly going to start developing an alter-ego or something soon.
Oh! And another cool thing I wanted to add about Clark was that, when Lois started blaming herself for Chloe's abduction, for not being there, Clark quickly tried to get rid of that negative line of thought, saying, "you may have ended up with them" to eradicate the guilt right away. The old Clark would've blamed himself. Season 8 Clark realizes there's no point to playing the Blame Game. Excellent stuff! :)
"Yeah, I think that part of the reason I feel the same love and excitement for the show that I felt back in S1 is because Lois doesn't know Clark's secret. It adds a hint of mischeviousness to Clark's character and gives him some sort of conflicts to deal with. And it's not just about "secrets and lies" -- it's just a matter of fact thing. He's a guy who saves people and doesn't want his partner to know all about it. It works well, within this context, without being angsty."
YES! It feels so..."Lois and Clark", or even like the old "Adventures of Superman"! Where Clark sort of almost gives a little silent wink to the camera...it's that special feeling like we're all in on it, but the person in front of him is not, and for once it's just fun! He's confident and doesn't have to worry too much about it. It's sort of a game to him, which is how it should be with Lois!
Great job to the writers, Tom Welling, and to us fans for demanding this version of Clark for quite some time! I think we've earned it. :)

I think Clark is awesome this season because he is more Superman like he does not sit back and wait anymore for things to happen he makes things happen. He does this while still keeping older good qualities of the old Clark Kent as well. Such as humor and honesty compassion and kindness but at the same time if there is something to be done he leaves without any explanation and does not just like Superman. Tom is enjoying himself this season. I can tell, his performances do not look for they look natural and normal. Keep it up writers, and, tom
Just my opinion

Clark was such a gentleman in this episode.
Thats a great point. He really is an awesome friend to both Chloe and Lois. And Jimmy too, since I felt that part of his speech was also to reassure Jimmy, and bolster him up a bit. And it was really such a lovely speech. He totally saved the moment. Chalk up another save for our Superguy. Not all of them have to involve superpowers ;)

I loved Clark this episode and this season. It is definitely a return to his investigative form. I have been rewatching some early smallville dvds and he was very proactive in investigating and often was the one to put the pieces together before Chloe and Pete.

Tom is doing an amazing job this season and I think he is finally glad to have his character finally moving forward. I have to give Tom Welling credit. He is playing Clark very mature, strong, smart, and resourceful, but still vulnerable, innocent, and playful! It's been a joy to watch.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. Welling emoted more in this one episode than ALL other episodes combined! (Possession and Red-K excluded.)

You said it BadToad. Clark was awesome. That head butt... YES!
Yeah, I was cheering when he did that. So Superman.

The head butt was awsome as they come, I was afraid Ollie would be the one rescuing them, thankfully our superman figured it out on his own, as he`s been doing for the past 5 episodes, even in Odyssey he almost succeded in scaping on his own, although even Superman needs help, once in a while.
Anyhow, great episode for Clark, glad to see the response in this thread, I opened one up in Plastique with the exact same topic and and got 1 reply ... I loved the iconic nature of it all, its what Ive always wanted to see, its why when most of my fellow comic book readers gave up, I hung in there; he was chivalrious, with both ladies, he saved lois, jimmy and chloe from an awkward moment, not to mention he gave a bestman-worthy speach, he took care of Lois and he was already noticing something was off when he saw the piled up mail, I think he has used his superhearing, to find people or solve stuff, more this season than in the entire season 7. The return of the superbreath was fantastic, I... there´s just too much to list it all, love this new Clark.

Well then I'm definitely going to have to work harder to give credit where credit is due. Or, sometimes, OVERdue.
I was worried about Oliver coming to the rescue as well. And its not as though I feel like Clark should never need rescuing, I just think that was a card played far too often last season, often to Clark's detriment. I'm feeling confident that PS3 won't make that same mistake.

It's refreshing to see that Clark is no longer plagued with self doubt and blaming himself for EVERYTHING. He's mature and confident and I hope it stays this way. No more moping!

Amen to that. I mean, I totally understand why some things in the past have caused him so much grief. So, I don't hold it against the guy to have some pretty depressing moments. But the way they are writing Clark at the moment, it seems like he is very unlikely to wallow in those moments of sadness.
But he is Clark, so I'm sure he'll blame himself for a few things along the way. He just wouldn't be our Clark otherwise ;)

Well, old habits die hard. IIRC, in Odyssey he did blame himself for something that happened to Chloe but he didn't mope. He took action. So, as long he takes action after he blames himself then I won't mind it as much.

I'm so getting used to this non-brooding Clark Kent.
It's so sad that some fans were saying that Tom Welling is not acting well this season. They say he is acting strange, almost evil, like bizarro.
The sad fact is that Clark Kent never had any real reason to ever be this happy, so really, the only time he grinned acted a little naughty was as bizarro.
It's sad that this was the only time, but the rest of the time he was just so mopey and broody.
Now Lois Lane makes him grin a lot, and she makes him flirty and naughty and all kinds of good stuff, and I just find it so silly how some fans think this is strange and bad acting.
Oh my god, Clark Kent is actually happy and grinning and acting flirty!!! (insert shocked face) he must be evil! He must be bizarro!
Er, no kiddos, he's just happy for the first time in his entire life and he has someone who is busting this chops constantly, and for the record, although you find this annoying, Clark obviously loves it!

Clark was awesome this episode. Confident and determined, tender and gentle, snarkie and playful. Whatever the situation demanded of him, he was there with bells on ...and got it right every time. Where has this guy been for the past few years? Tom Welling's face is just beautiful to watch, so very expressive and ultra appealing at the same time. hehe Love that guy!
Bryan Millar, more of the same, please!:D
Eww!! Clark is NOT acting like Bizarro! Bizarro is a perv!

Clark really has been awesome this season. I have always respected how much Tom Welling understands the character he plays, especially in the episodes that he has directed, but now I am starting to see that the writers are truly beginning to understand him better too. My favorite character has unwaveringly been Clark Kent, so it is a bit weird to say it, but this season he has just been written better, more proactive, and Supermanly... I like it.
