TV Line is reporting that Nicollette Sheridan has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming second season of Dynasty. She joined the CW soap for the last third of its freshman season.
The inclusion of Sheridan as Alexis Carrington, a role originated by Joan Collins in the original series, provided the series with a jolt of buzz as it entered the home stretch of its first season. But the introduction of Alexis only furthered the creative momentum the show had generated until that point, as Dynasty had only grown more self-assured and confident in its storytelling after an inauspicious opening run. Granted, Alexis shook up every dynamic on the show while heightening the stakes and further grounding the show’s operatic soapiness in family; it’s just that the show was already on the creative upswing when she hopped aboard.
It remains to be seen whether we’ll be seeing more of Alexis and the rest of the Carringtons in the fall. On the strength of its Netflix deal, favorable studio politics, and positive word-of-mouth, the series managed to snag an early renewal, but it’s as yet unclear how much of a priority it will be for the network in season two. Especially when two of its fellow Friday shows in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin are concluding next season, meaning that The CW could opt to air those together one last time before bringing Dynasty in midseason.
The CW is set to unveil its 2018 fall schedule Thursday, May 17th.
