FOX has officially ordered its first new series for 2019-2020, opting to go with sheriff drama Deputy, family comedy Outmatched, tech drama Next, serial killer thriller Prodigal Son, and an untitled fertility drama from Jason Katims formerly known as Sisters.
From Will Beall (Aquaman) and directed by David Ayer (Bright), Deputy follows career lawman Bill Hollister (Stephen Dorff), who becomes acting sheriff of Los Angeles County after his superior unexpectedly passes. Though he’s more comfortable out in the field than in the boardroom, Hollister will have to steady his department in this time of crisis and keep the men and women who serve under him from experiencing too much instability.
In addition to Dorff, Deputy stars Bex Taylor-Klaus, Yara Martinez, Brian Van Holt, Siena Goines, and Shane Paul McGhie.
From Manny Coto (24), Next is described as a fact-based thriller grounded in the latest A.I.research. The series follows narcissistic tech company CEO Paul LeBlanc (John Slattery) and Homeland Cybersecurity Agent Shea (Fernanda Andrade) as they team up to stop the world’s first artificial intelligence crisis: the emergence of a rogue AI with the ability to continuously improve itself.
In addition to Slattery and Andrade, neXT stars Michael Mosley, Eve Harlow, Aaron Moten, and Gerardo Celasco.
From Lon Zimmet (I’m Sorry), Outmatched follows a South Jersey family led by blue-collar couple Cay (Maggie Lawson) and Mike (Jason Biggs). The two are parents to four children, three of whom are certified geniuses.
From Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver (Deception), Prodigal Son tells the story of criminal psychologist Malcolm Bright (Payne), whose proficiency at thinking like a criminal comes from his experience of having a serial killer as a father. If ordered, the series would follow Bright as he teamed up with the NYPD to solve crimes and dealt with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, and a homicidal father still looking to bond.
In addition to Payne, Prodigal Son stars Michael Sheen, Bellamy Young, and Lou Diamond Phillips.
Based on Australian series Sisters, with Annie Wiesman (The Path) writing and Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) producing, the untitled fertility drama follows only child Julia (Snow) as she finds out her fertility doctor father used his own sperm to conceive dozens of children during his career. The series follows Julia as she tracks down her half-siblings and becomes close with her two new sisters.
