The news Greendale fans have been waiting and pining for: NBC has renewed Community for a 13-episode fourth season. The news fans have been dreading: Deadline reports that it’s unclear if creator/showrunner Dan Harmon will be on board. However, no official statements have been made by Harmon or the network, so at this point it’s still speculation and rumor.
News of the feud between Harmon and show star Chevy Chase has been circulating on the internet since March, resulting in questions of whether or not both could work together in future seasons. Chase had previously stated in interviews that he was unsure if he’d return for another season, but Harmon–who is known for being very vocal and open to fans–has yet to express the desire to leave. Longtime executive producers Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan, however, have already announced they will not be back for season 4 after signing a deal with 20th Century Fox TV.
On the upside, Alan Sepinwall at HitFix reports it’s entirely possible that a back 9 episodes could be ordered depending on the ratings. But for now, the 13 episode order is the only thing set in stone. And unlike neighboring show 30 Rock, which will be in its final season, Community could still have the option of returning for a fifth season if ratings hold up—meaning that “six seasons and a movie” dream is still somewhat plausible. The question now is whether or not the same cast and crew will be around.
