NBC has picked up a second new comedy for 2017-18 in Mindy Kaling brother comedy Champions. The series joins school-based comedy A.P. Bio as the only freshman comedies on NBC’s schedule next season, with the Will & Grace reboot also part of the network’s comedy slate. Per Deadline, Tina Fey-produced comedy The Sackett Sisters is the only comedy pilot still alive, though with Fey series Great News earning a surprise second season, there’s a chance NBC is done ordering new comedies.
From Kaling and Charlie Grandy (The Mindy Project), Champions follows charismatic but unambitious gym owner Vince (Anders Holm), who lives a simple life of women and working out with brother Michael (Andy Favreau). That is, until Vince’s high school fling Priya (Kaling) comes back into his life, only to drop their teenage son off on his doorstep.
In addition to Holms and Favreau, Champions stars J.J. Totah (Back in the Game), Mouzam Makkar (The Night Before the Morning After), and Nina Wadia (EastEnders).
NBC is set to reveal its 2017-18 schedule Sunday, May 14th, with its upfront presentation the following day. You can check out what KSiteTV thought the network could do here.
