NBC has given a series order to Undercovers, a new series directed and produced by J.J. Abrams of LOST and Alias fame.
It’s the first new-series pickup to be announced by the network for Fall 2010.
The network has also released an official description for the show:
Outwardly, Steven Bloom (Boris Kodjoe, “Resident Evil: Afterlife”) and his wife, Samantha (Gugu Mbatha-Raw, “Bonekickers”), are a typical married couple who own a small catering company in Los Angeles and are helped by Samantha’s easily frazzled younger sister, Lizzy (Jessica Parker Kennedy, “Smallville”). Secretly, the duo were two of the CIA’s best spies until they fell in love on the job five years ago and retired. When fellow spy and friend Nash (Carter MacIntyre, “American Heiress”) goes missing while on the trail of a Russian arms dealer, the Blooms are reinstated by boss Carlton Shaw (Gerald McRaney, “Deadwood”) to locate and rescue Nash. The pair is thrust back into the world of espionage as they follow leads that span the globe — and Steven and Samantha realize that this supercharged, undercover lifestyle provides the excitement and romance that their marriage has been missing. Also starring is Ben Schwartz (NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”).

Now it’s Variety’s turn to reveal the buzz on pilots in contention for slots on networks’ Fall 2010 schedules.
Here’s the latest:
NBC
Undercovers from JJ Abrams is considered “a lock” for the NBC schedule.
The Rockford Files re-do is putting out feelers for a writing staff, so that sounds pretty good.
The Chase – things look good.
Kindreds, The Cape and The Event are all “contenders.” Love Bites has fans at the network.
Next with Paul Reiser, Outsourced, Perfect Couples, and This Little Piggy are looking good on the sitcom front.
CBS
Hawaii Five-O with Alex O’Loughlin is also already looking for staff writers.
The Criminal Minds spin-off may be held for midseason, if it happens. Defenders with Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell as Las Vegas attorneys sounds like it’s got a chance.
Bleep My Dad Says and Mike and Molly seem the strongest on the sitcom side, according to Variety.
ABC
No Ordinary Family “makes Disney execs giddy” because of its family appeal and sci-fi elements.
Body of Evidence, 187 Detroit, and Off The Map seem to be ABC’s other contenders.
Mr. Sunshine with Matthew Perry and It Takes A Village sound the strongest on the sitcom side, and Wright vs. Wrong with Debra Messing, Cheryl Hines, and Carrie Fisher has fans at the network.
FOX
Breakout Kings about “ex-cons who team up with marshals to track down fugitives” is “leading the pack.”
Ride-Along, a cop drama by Shawn Ryan, is also well-received.
Pleading Guilty and Midland also sound like contenders.
Traffic Light, Keeping Hope Alive, Breaking In, and the Will Arnett-starring series Running Wilde (from Arrested Development’s Mitch Hurwitz) sound the strongest on the comedy side.
The CW
Nikita – Variety says that The CW’s La Femme Nikita re-do is “sure to” get one of the three new drama slots on the network.
Betwixt and Hellcats seem to be “heatseekers.”

Variety has posted a new article detailing new Fall 2010 pilots (hard to access though because of their ridiculous paywall), and with the article comes the first promotional photo for the new NBC pilot Undercovers produced by J.J. Abrams:
That’s Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. We’ll probably be hearing a lot more about them in the future.

Both THR and Deadline.com have posted updated tallies of how certain pilots are doing, including a few that are being covered here at KSiteTV.
At NBC, both say The Rockford Files has good chances, although Deadline says that the network has not seen the pilot yet. It sounds like J.J. Abrams’ Undercovers will definitely be on the air this Fall. Chances sound good for David E. Kelley’s pilot Kindreds, although there are some pilots NBC is more excited about.
THR says nothing about The Cape, but Deadline is saying that it seems like it’s between The Cape and The Event for a spot on the NBC schedule, with The Cape flying in slightly ahead right now.
David Tennant’s Rex Is Not Your Lawyer has had a reworked pilot which has “tested well” according to Deadline. THR didn’t mention it.
NBC also has some sitcoms that have been received well at the network. Those include This Little Piggy, Friends With Benefits, Perfect Couples, and Outsourced.
THR says the CBS Hawaii Five-O pilot screening “went great,” and the Jim Belushi drama The Defenders is also looking good. William Shatner apparently “nailed” the taping for the sitcom Bleep My Dad Says, and Chuck Lorre’s Mike & Molly apparently had a “great taping.”
Apparently FOX really likes the Texas con-man drama Midland, which is directed by future Spider-Man director Marc Webb. Terra Nova sounds like it’s a done deal for a 13-episode order. A new sitcom from My Name Is Earl creator Greg Garcia, titled Keep Hope Alive, is showing promise.
Deadline is listing most of ABC’s dramas as “looking good, sight unssen.” THR, however, calls No Ordinary Family a “stand out” and says 187 Detroit and Off The Map (the latter from Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes) are looking strong.
The Matthew Perry-starring comedy Mr. Sunshine and Debra Messing’s Wright vs. Wrong seem to also be doing well.
Deadline says The CW’s Nikita and Hellcats are “very strong” and “very on-brand” which is interesting considering Hellcats isn’t even finished yet. They say Betwixt is “cooling off,” though what exactly it is cooling off from is vague. They also have good things to say about Nomads, though they worry it might not fit the network brand. Some early script reviews for Nomads have also come in very good.
THR, on the other hand, gives props to Nikita and says the network is “also excited” about Betwixt, without mentioning the other programs.
Here’s the current schedule for when we will know the networks’ Fall line-ups. Generally, though, the schedules often leak a day or two earlier:
Monday, May 17
NBC (Morning)
FOX (Afternoon)
Tuesday, May 18
ABC (Afternoon)
Wednesday, May 19
CBS (Afternoon)
Thursday, May 20
The CW (Morning)

A recent article by James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter, himself very respected within the TV community, included a tidbit about the futures of Heroes and Chuck that went unnoticed by many in the fan community for the last few days.
In his piece on Parenthood, he said this:
NBC still has a couple major titles on the bubble for renewal — namely “Chuck” and “Heroes” — but sources indicate both will probably return, with “Heroes” likely receiving a 13-episode “final season” order.
“It is all yet to be debated,” Bromstad said. “Both of those shows make sense with the new shows we’ll be bringing on.”
The “Bromstad” referred to is NBC primetime president Angela Bromstad.
This is not only interesting news for fans of Heroes and Chuck, but for those looking forward to the new pilots The Cape and Undercovers as well. Could one hero show lead into another? Could fun spies lead to sexy spies? (Then again, Sarah on Chuck is pretty darn sexy). We’ll know for sure when NBC announces their Fall schedules next month.
