Zap2It has broken the news that D.B. Woodside (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has joined the cast of The CW’s Hellcats as Derrick Altman, “a handsome young physician who takes care of the Hellcats cheerleaders” that will be romantically involved with the Vanessa character.
Hellcats, starring Aly Michalka and Ashley Tisdale, is produced by Tom Welling and will premiere on The CW in September.
Thanks also go out to Hellcats Fans for bringing this to our attention.
As the Tom Welling-produced Hellcats resumes filming, so too come some spoilers for additions made to the original pilot presentation. Many of the additions concern the Vanessa character (played by Sharon Leal) who coaches the cheerleading team.
It seems that she had a past with both “Red” Raymond, an alpha male type who used to coach at Lancer and is considering making a return. This is possibly the role that Ben Browder was rumored to have been cast for (and may have possibly shot) that was ultimately not in the finished cut of the pilot. Vanessa knew Red in the times when he was just a junior coach and she was only a student…. and of course they have a past.
The other role now being cast is that of Derrick. Derrick is Vanessa’s boyfriend – so any chemistry between her and Red will have to stay platonic. Who are we kidding? This is TV, this is the CW, of course there will be waves. Derrick is a doctor.
Hellcats is currently scheduled to resume filming on July 14.
In a recent article about recasting actors in certain pilots, Deadline.com has dropped the bomb that popular genre actor Ben Browder is no longer a part of Hellcats. Here’s what their article said:
“Most recently, the football coach role on the CW’s new cheerleading drama Hellcats also is being recast, and the character may be retooled as well. Ben Browder played the role in the pilot.”
The Deadline piece also talks about recasting for other new pilots such as Harry’s Law, Friends With Benefits, and Bleep My Dad Says.
UPDATE:BenBrowderPortal.com has an explanation from Browder’s manager: “After long discussions with the producers, Ben has decided not to do the series as he has a couple of films that he would like to do and if he went ahead with the series, he would not be able to do them. It was a difficult decision, as you can understand.”
The CW has released preview clips (but no trailers yet) from their two new series, Nikita and Hellcats.
I’ll be honest, I’m not feeling the Hellcats clip but then again I’m not the target demographic. The promo trailer (not yet released online) is said to be much better. I hope.
Here’s the promotional “poster” art for The CW’s Hellcats, premiering later this year to air on Wednesdays at 9PM. This “poster” is our first look at the full cast of the Tom Welling-produced series.
