Deadline is reporting that Hulu has renewed praised dramedy Casual for an abbreviated fourth and final season, which will consist of eight episodes and premiere in 2018.
From Zander Lehmann (The Shannara Chronicles), executive produced by Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), and showran by Liz Tigelaar (Life Unexpected), Casual tells the story of newly divorced single mother Valerie (Michaela Watkins) who moves in with her brother Alex (Tommy Dewey) after leaving her cheating husband. The series chronicles Valerie’s attempt at starting her life over while parenting teenage daughter Laura (Tara Lynne Barr), as well as how her relationship with her brother evolves as the two live together and the romantic struggles both she and Alex deal with.
In addition to Watkins, Dewey, and Barr, Casual stars Nyasha Hatendi (The Ghost Writer) as Leon, one of Valerie’s one-night stands who Alex ends up befriending, and Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Alex and Valerie’s mother Dawn.
Casual was one of the first shows to legitimize Hulu as an outlet for high-end scripted content, garnering strong reviews and landing the streaming platform its first major award nomination through its Best TV Series: Musical or Comedy nod two years ago. The series paved the way for the success of The Handmaid’s Tale and helped Hulu become a premier destination for creatives, so its quiet run will have been a resounding success.
